Upgrading 4240 and IDSM-2

When upgrading the service packs from 6.0(2)E1 to 6.0(3)E1 should I prepare for "disaster recovery" with the system image ready on TFTP server etc? Or is this overkill for just doing a service pack upgrade?

Depends on your comfort level. In the past, I have had both good and bad experiences. Very little consistency. I have had it where out of 25 sensors all on the same build/patch level 20 take the upgrade fine, but 5 are left in an unsuable state. TFTP the image and start from scratch. Then I have had times where all of the sensors work fine with the upgrade, but I have also had it where all sensors fail on the upgrade. It is much less likely for all to fail however. After the first occurence of this, we developed a new strategy to deploy all sensor patches and signature update on a test sensor, let it run for two days and ensure it is still functioning as normal. Should we have to do this, probably not, but with my history with Cisco's quality assurance we have to.
So in short, is it overkill, yes probably. But at the same time I would make sure I have the files readily avilable just in case.

when i am in romon mode and i give ip address to managment Interface of IDS and Tftp Server Address. After giving address i am not able to ping in romon mode to tftp server. i have use cross cable between IDS and TFTP Server and also droping straight cable from IDS and tftp server on switch. But when i am in configuration mode then i can ping. So please tell me what i do to upgrade 5.0. also tell me if any other method to upgrade . Thanks in advance

If you are truly attempting to upgrade from 4.1 to 5.0 (versus a re-image), the correct approach is to install the 5.0(1) Major update file using the CLI upgrade command. This will retain any configuration settings on the sensor.
The steps you describe above are to re-image your sensor using the 5.0(2) system image. I am not sure why your settings are not working. Have you assigned an IP address to the gateway? Depending on your network topology, this may be necessary. You should also try pinging your gateway or another active address on your network to see if you are even getting out of the sensor.

4240 and password recovery

Hi,
I tried upgrading my 4240 sensor via CSm to IPS-CS-MGR-K9-7.0-5a-E4. The upgrade failed and the device was unreachable!!
I consoled into the device and rebooted. The login prompt appears, but the admin username and password combo does not work. I went through the password recovery procedure, but now get the following:
login: cisco
Password:
You are required to change your password immediately (password aged)
Changing password for cisco
(current) password:
Authentication token manipulation error
Does anyone have any ideas about this error message, or how I can fully recover to previous state? The service account works and gets me into bash, but I am not sure why CLI access is failing.

A. In order to solve this issue, use default password (cisco) two times and then change the password from the config mode. The IDS requires the default password to be entered twice.
For example:
login:cisco
Password:cisco
Enter current password:cisco
Enter new password: ***
Re-enter new password: ***
Give it a try and see if it works.

@ BDAqua > I tried your suggestion but no luck. holding opt+command just gave me a blue screen and it rebotted, pushing the disk out of the drive. Yes, the macbook has 1 gb of ram. I realize that the min req. call for 2 gb of ram so i've got an order in for another dimm to put into the machine. Thanks for your suggestions.
@ a_brody > Yes. The machine was plugged into a power source. The disk promts you to do that and i recall aspect this form other installs. Thanks for the reminder tho! ( btw your second post is like greek to me man!)

And yes previously i've been told by Apple that I needed the Box Set (not the family pack. i am using the family pack for OS Snow Leopard) to upgrade my 10.4.11 mac - they never mentioned adding ram but i figured that out on my own and an apple specialist recommended it when i purchased Snow Leopard and confirmed that I coul duse the Snow Leopard to upgarde from Tiger (10.4.11). I've also read extensively (as i said above) that it isn't necessary (always) to buy the box set. Several 10.4.11 users report having upgraded using the Snow Leopard upgrade disk only (not the Box Set) without trouble on intel macs (also see the apple link i posted). So i'm just ondering how they did it and i cannot.

Once you think you've done it correctly restart and hold down the option key or go to "System Preferences" under the Apple and look at "Startup Disk".
That will tell which Disks are bootable.

Windows 8.1 upgrade suggestions:
There are some important steps to take prior to doing the upgrade. Review this MS posted document. Be sure to run the upgrade assistant.
Be sure that Windows 8 has all of the latest MS updates installed. There are prerequisite patches that are required.
Be sure that you have at least 40 GB of hard disk free space.
Back up your data to external media.
Make a Windows 8 recovery media to external media before doing the upgrade. I prefer to use a third party hard drive imaging program.
Temporarily disable the antivirus software.
You will need to reinstall your programs after the upgrade so make note of which ones are required.
Check the HP Support site for Window 8.1 updates for your particular PC. If you don't see any updates then your PC has not been tested/certified with Windows 8.1.

I've been running 64-bit Windows 8 Consumer Preview very nicely for several months and want to upgrade to 64-bit Windows Pro on my Pavilion a1440n. When I've tried to install from within the OS I get weird messages indicating that it can't be installed on a USB Flash drive (which I'm not trying to do). When I tried doing a clean install I got an odd message saying that certain installer files were missing and it would not complete. I called Microsoft customer support and the agent there thought my cpu would work because it wouldn't support Hyper-V, even though I understand that it optional. From running coreinfo.exe I can see that I have the PAE, NX, and SSE2 on the cpu enabled as meets requirements.
When I ran through th HP site I saw that this machine has not been tested. Is there any way of getting confirmation that Windows 8 Pro 64-bit will or won't run on my machine? The HP Product code for it is ER904AA#ABA.

It's not clear whether your printer is included in the Apple list - there is an Officejet 6100 and a couple of other types. Go to the page linked to above and use the browser search for 6100.
I'm afraid HP are notorious for not supporting older printers - I had the same problem. Probably they hope you will buy another printer (I did, but it was a Canon). I did look on HP's site and couldn't see a driver - you could give it a try (make sure you have the exactly correct printer name):

Alternatively ou could try Gutenprint (open source software):

I found it would indeed drive the printer, but the colour dithering wasn't very satisfactory and the duplex printing bolt-on wouldn't work. However as Gutenprint is free it's worth trying to see if it's any good for you.

If the iPhoto Library is still 130 GB large, your photos are probably still inside; perhaps the library has a corruption.
Or the iPhoto Library is on drive, that is incompatible with iPhoto. Where is your iPhoto Library stored?
To check for a library corruption: Ctrl-click or right-click the iPhoto library and select "Show Package Contents". This will show the folders inside the library package.
Are there folders called "Masters" or "Old Masters"?
If there is a folder "Old Masters", you are having a problem with recent bug, that corrupts iPhoto Libraries when upgrading. In that case, it would be best to restore your iPhoto Library from a backup you made before you upgraded to Yosemite.
Or, if no backup is available, copy the "old Masters" folder to a folder on your Desktop and create a new iPhoto library and import the Old Masters folder.
If there is no folder "old Masters" try to rebuild your iPhoto Library with the First Aid tools :
Make a backup copy of your iPhoto Library, but don't overwrite any older backups.
To launch the "First Aid Tools" hold down the options-command keys ⌥⌘ while double clicking your iPhoto Library.
Keep the keys held down firmly until the First Aid panel appears.
Select "Rebuild Database".

It wouldn't open unless I clicked "upgrade." The other option was "cancel." The Genius at the Apple Store said I had no choice. The new stuff looks idfferent but maybe it's just taking a while to go through all my photos. I can't tell what is going on exactly, but I'm nervous to see the last slideshow there is 2010.
We are backed up on Carbonite, but the hoops to go through getting specific items back seems daunting to me.

Could be many things, we should start with this...
"Try Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at the top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)

Welcome to the Apple Community.
Navigate to Settings > General > Software Update and install any updates available.
Navigate to Settings > General > Reset > Erase all contents and settings on the device you want to restore.
When this completes and the Set-Up Assistant starts, choose "Restore from iCloud Backup" and enter your iCloud account and password. You will see the three most recent backups for each of the devices on which you enabled Backup. Choose which backup to restore from.
