Upgrading 5th generation hard drive

Wondering if anyone can advise.
Was thinking of upgrading one of my 80G classics to a 160G by replacing the hard drive, as I don't intend to splash out on yet another ipod, but see this as a cheaper option for getting more memory. Then I wondered.
I have an old 30G 5th generation too, probably nearing the end of it's time, partly the reason why I don't use it so often. So is it possible to replace a 5th generation 30G hard drive with a 160G Classic hard drive as an upgrade, or are the systems incompatible? Can this only be replaced with a larger 5th generation hard drive?

YES - it is difficult if you don't know what your doing. And it can be expensive - the hard drive is the most expensive part, after all. My company, www.dr-pod.com can complete this service for you, but if you want to try it yourself...
The Hard drive is different - You will need to buy a new one of these
The rear case is SMALLER - You will need one that says 160GB on or 30GB as these are the same size.
If I were you though, I would take the 30GB up to 80GB, as this is easiest to do. If you are not confident inside small electronics, then don't do it, enjoy your iPod and send it to a repair company like mine. If you are, then go for it, and let us know how you get on.

I got a 320GB sata 2.5" hard drive and installed it myself, its easy. I also got a caddy so I can use my old 120GB drive as a back up. Make sure u have everything backed up! Seagate and western digital drives are most popular. I asked similar q and got this answer"
Extended Hard Drive Preparation
1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger or Leopard.)
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (only required for Intel Macs) then click on the OK button. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive.
If your backup is bootable, then boot from the external drive and use SuperDuper to clone it back to the newly installed drive.

Thank you. I followed the faq#14 (using setup wizard from the osx install disk). Everything went just as planned until I woke up this morning and noticed there was no progress on the "transferring documents" meter. It stopped about 1/4 of the way. I can hear the computer working and the bar is somewhat animated like it is advancing but it's not.
Should I cancel and restart or should I wait it out? It already been about 13 hours since I started the process. Do you think it is my time machine or my iMac? Maybe the time machine file is corrupt or something.

About to upgrade my Macbook hard drive - what steps to ensure TM works?

I'm about to upgrade my 100Gb hard drive in my Macbook to a 320Gb drive and I was planning to use either Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper to clone my existing drive to my new drive.
Couple of questions:-
Will TM continue to work seamlessly or are there some tweaks I will need to do to get it to continue to work.
With the increase in size of my Macbook drive I probably need to increase the size of my TM drive for backup as well - can I just clone my current TM drive to a larger capacity drive or will there be tweaks required.

If you have a good Time Machine backup, you can just use that. You would install the new drive, boot to the Leopard install disk, then use the "Restore From a Time Machine Backup" utility. This restores your entire installation from the Time Machine backup of your choosing. Time Machine would then continue with the same backup where it left off.
Kappy will not agree with this, because he has not had the same success as I with Time Machine. For me, it has worked flawlessly, and I have used the above method several times to go from one machine to another, or to a new drive on the same machine.
I do recommend that you take a few precautions prior to trusting your Time Machine backup, however. First, I would verify the Time Machine volume with Disk Utility, to make sure there are no disk errors. Then, I would make a final backup and monitor it carefully. Open /Applications/Utilities/Console. In the Sidebar, under "Log Database Queries," select "All Messages." Then type "backupd" into the search field. Finally, choose "Backup Now" from the Time Machine menu.
Watch the progress of the backup in the Console window, and look for the presence of any potential errors. If nothing seems out of the ordinary, your backup should be safe to use.

Are you now using a different username from the one you used prior to migrating? If so that is the reason for the problem. You might, then, give this a try:
To fix Home folder permissions
Open the Terminal application in the Utilities folder. At the command line prompt enter or paste the following command line:
sudo chown -R `id -un`:`id -gn` ~
Press RETURN. You will be prompted to enter your admin password which will not be echoed.

Whether or not you are able to recover the data off the drive yourself will depend on if the drive suffered any impact damage in the crash. You can buy USB SATA or IDE adapters (Intel and almost all G5 use SATA) that will let you connect your hard drive to a computer (like a flash drive) to see if you can recover the data. If the drive has suffered physical damage if may not mount.
If you know someone who has one of these adapters you could try using theirs, otherwise you could buy one but you take the risk of the data on the drive being non recoverable. Regardless, both are much cheaper than $1699!
(Alternatively, if you know of someone with a Mac Pro or PowerMac G5 they may be able to install the drive in their machine and try to boot from or mount it and copy the data off.)

It's easy, but not that easy. You need to copy all the info from the drive currently in the mac to the new one before you install the new SSD. You can do this by downloading cloning software (I use CarbonCopyCloner because it's free)

I'm having this MSI GE60-2OC which I find slow.
Last time I was seeking some advices on what I should upgrade, and I was adviced to upgrade my current hard drive with a SSD instead. I was recommended to go with a mSATA SSD, which is perfectly fine - however, I got one question.
Would it be a waste to get a mSATA SSD and then replace my current HDD with a SSD?
If so, I'm planning to buy the Samsung SSD 840 EVO mSATA 120GB and a Samsung SSD 840 EVO 250GB.
Is that possible? Would it be overkill?

You'll need at least two mSATA to have RAID 0, so it's not supported on GE60 2OC.
Just stick with the original BIOS you have and there is no additional settings needed in BIOS.

How to adjust boot prioroty?
1. After seeing MSI logo while booting up, press "Delete" button to enter the BIOS menu.
2. Use keyboard to move to "Boot" tab.

I have a mid '06 Mac Mini (1.66 MHz w/80 GB HD) and want to upgrade to the largest HD possible. When I bought it Apple did not offer an upgrade.

I just replaced the hard drive in my 2007 mini. I stayed with Hitachi since that is what Apple supplies with new machines. Hitachi has 2-1/2 inch SATA drives up to 750 GB in both 5400 rpm and 7200 rpm. Naturally the 7200 rpm models have higher transfer rates. The only issue I can think of with 7200 drives is higher heat generation.
I just visited an apple store and checked out their new mini and found it has 7200 rpm Hitachi drives in the server version. I also spoke to Apple Care and Hitachi and both of them assured me 7200 rpm drives are fully compatible.

You may note that Hitachi has Standard, Bulk Data Encryption (BDE) and Enhanced Access (EA) versions of their drives. Both the original drive in my mid 2007 mini and the drives in the new mini at the Apple Store were standard version models.
The best price this weekend here in Chicagoland for the Hitachi 320 GB drive I bought (7200 rpm) was at MicroCenter. Hope this helps.

Time Capsule - OS Upgrade and External Hard Drive

Hi, This is my first request and am happy to have found this community helpful so far. It has answered many of my previous questions because somebody else had already asked. However, this time I’m not able to get all the answers since I have specific questions. Please help.
I have a Macbook (late 2008 Aluminum) with 2GB memory, Intel Core 2 Duo, 2 GHz running Leopard. I just went and bought these to start an upgrade project–
a. CD for Snow Leopard
b. Time Capsule
c. 4 GB memory (2*2GB)
d. 1 External Hard Drive – 1 TB Seagate GoFlex (running out of space in 160GB macbook)
I will buy these applications via Mac App Store after I have the OS upgrade:
e. iPhoto ‘11
f. iMovie ‘11
I have successfully connected time capsule and configured it as my router and have set it up as the time machine backup device (what a breeze!). Also, I have taken the first full backup of macbook and am ready to go. Before I go ahead with next steps, I have few questions:
Should I install the new memory first and then Snow Leopard or doesn’t matter?
Any advice for my memory upgrade? I found the instruction manual in Apple’s site and am planning to do it myself.
Any advice for my Snow Leopard upgrade or anything to be cautious about? I believe the instructions after I pop in the CD will be self-explanatory.
After I have done the Snow Leopard Upgrade, I believe I will still have access to my files in the time machine backup in TC from before the OS upgrade? The reason I ask is I am planning to delete/move files after the OS upgrade.
FYI – After the Snow Leopard Upgrade, I will upgrade to iPhoto ’11 and iMovie ’11 from ’08. I have the latest iTunes.
After I have Snow Leopard, iPhoto/iMovie ’11, I will connect the EHD to the TC USB port and am planning to move the iTunes Media and iMovie project/events to the EHD (found the instructions on this) and delete the media from the macbook internal drive to relieve space. Say, just in case my EHD crashes in the next 2 days after I do this, will I still be able to recover the previous media/project files from Time Capsule? Or do I need to copy the iTunes Media and iMovie project/events into the Time Capsule manually before I move it into EHD? Basically, I want to make sure I have 2 copies of my media, 1 in TC and 1 in EHD, since I am deleting it from mac’s IHD.
Now say I have the EHD connected to TC via USB and have moved my all media and movie projects into the EHD. So macbook is accessing the EDH wirelessly, as the source for iTunes and iMovie media. For performance or portability, if I plug my EHD directly into the macbook, can it seamlessly recognize it as the media source for iTunes and iMovie or are there any settings involved? I am just wondering since via the TC it was a shared drive, and now it’s a plugged-in EHD.
I know that Time Machine does incremental backups. Is there an explanation on this as to what is meant by hourly, daily and weekly backups and what are the copies made? I heard the hourly are replaced by daily backups and the daily are replaced by weekly, what does that mean?
This may not impact me now, but may be soon. Is it true that once TC is full, time machine will delete copies of the oldest backup? My concern is that I want to somehow conserve today’s backup for good. Is that do able?
Should I be concerned that time machine backs up every hour, since it may reduce my macbook’s performance during the backups? I know a way to reduce the backup frequency, am just trying to understand if it’s necessary to do so?
How do I use my time capsule as an external hard drive? The reason is I have another PC from which I want to copy files and store in TC as a backup.
I know I have many questions, but am hoping to get your expert advice. Thank you.

Hello, seems like you wanted to do pretty much what i wanted to do. that is free up space on lap top. But still have instant access to your itunes stuff. I found a solution that works for me.
I have a portable WD hdd attached to my time capsule via usb, i then access both through the capsules wireless connection, using the TC for time machine.
The Apple tv then accesses my itunes lib through my MBP via TC's wireless. I did however connect the WD Hdd directly to my MBP for the initial transfer to the apple tv, but itunes seems to find the lib as long as its there, doesnt matter if its connected to MBPs usb or the TCs usb. Sometimes it might revert to the default location, but i've found that if you click on a song it still plays, then if you close then reopen itunes every thing goes back to your external hdd...
Which means if you go away or want your itunes lib on the move you just need a little WD hdd.
I'm not totally sure if its worked yet but i connected my WD hdd to my MBP vie usb and told the TC to back up that too by going to options in TM preferences, seems to have worked, not sure if it would work while connected to the TC usb connection, doesnt seem to.
NB:Before you do this do a back up of everything in you Itunes Lib on your TC incase you screw up.
(For easy transfer of your itunes lib go to preferences on itunes and create a folder called iTunes Music on your Hdd then close preferences and allow itunes to do its thing, then in itunes go to
file - library - consolidate library, itunes. Itunes then makes a copy of all music on your new hdd. I then deleted the tunes off my MBP)
Just make sure you open your finder and click on the TC to wake the drive before you open Itunes other wise you'll have to go in to preferences and keep altering the location for your itunes folder. which can take i tunes a while.
This method seems to cope with video and music just fine.
Well hope that wasn't too confusing, as i confuse myself at times.
