Upgrading 9.1 to 9.2.1 Requires Classic???

Hello all. I'm in one of those, "should take a deep breath and count to ten" moments, which I just did, but am still ready to punch my fist through my screen. I hope I don't make too bad a first impression here.
When I load Classic I get a frozen welcome screen, which I understand is not unusual for someone with OS 9.1 installed. So I downloaded the upgrade and clicked on the install icon titled "Update to Mac OS 9.2.1". And got a blank Word document. I then tried clicking on the other icon titled "Mac OS Install", and my system tried to load Classic - to run the installer, to load OS 9.2.1, so I can run Classic. I have downloaded the upgrade twice, and tried running it from both hard discs (OS X is on internal, OS 9.1 is on external).
Unless Apple is just playing some kind of cruel joke on me, I'm sure I don't need to be able to run Classic to be able to run the upgrade or install program that will allow me to run Classic.
What am I doing wrong? How do I get my OS 9.1 upgraded to OS 9.2.1?
Thanks.
Len

Hi, Len -
After much research on the net and here at Apple.com I have discovered that I may have a Mac that is not capable of loading OS 9 native.
Not so. The G4 (Digital Audio) models can indeed boot to OS 9 - when they originally shipped, that was all there was; OSX did not yet exist. However, they can boot only to the model-specific version of OS 9.1 that shipped with them, or to OS 9.2.1 or 9.2.2/ They can also use a retail (white label, gold 9) OS 9.2.1 Install CD, but not a retail OS 9.1 Install CD.
Article #25114 - Mac OS 8, 9: Compatibility With Macs
Assuming the OS 9.1 currently on the machine was installed from its original disks, it should be the model-specific version that is needed by a G4 (DA) model. One way to confirm that - check the version number (via Get Info) for the file Finder in the System Folder; it should be version 9.1.1.
It should be bootable - the machine should be able to start up to it.
There's a couple of possibilities for that to not work -
• If the installed OS 9.1 is a 'standard' version (Finder is v. 9.1), then that can not be used to boot the machine. Likewise if the OS 9.1 Install CD you have is a retail one (white label, gold 9), it can not boot that model.
• If the hard drive has been reformatted using OSX's Disk Utiity, and the option to install OS 9 drivers was not selected, then even if the OS 9.1 version on the hard drive is correct it will not be capable of booting the machine. However, this should not prevent the machine from being able to boot to an appropriate CD (such as the "Software Iinstall" disk that originally came with the machine, or a retail OS 9.2.1 Install CD) - in this situation, once the machine has booted to the CD the hard drive would not be available.
Article #106849 - Disk Is Available in Mac OS X But Not in Mac OS 9
• Some users have noted that once a machine has had its firmware updated (as is recommended prior to installing OSX on many models), the original OS 9 (or even earlier) version that came with the machine will no longer work as a boot OS.
If you have a lot of things attached to the machine, try disconnecting them - sometimes attached hardware will prevent a machine from being able to boot to one OS or another. Retain just the monitor, keyboard, and mouse; and use a standard Apple keyboard and mouse if possible.
My system ran classic just fine until I upgraded from 10.2 to 10.4. Based on other discussions here, and Apple's own support docs, this freezing issue is common with 9.1 and 10.4, and they claim I need to upgrade 9.1 to 9.2 to resolve this. Is this true, or am I pursuing the wrong solution?
I can't answer that. I'm not yet an OSX user. However, the primary reason for the releases of OS 9.2.1 and 9.2.2 was to provide better compatibility as Classic, so I would not be surprised if some configurations result in OS 9.1 not working well (or at all) as Classic in later OSX versions.
I can't load 9.1 native, nor can I load classic at all, yet the 9.2 upgrade that will fix this won't work unless I have classic running. Could it really be true that if I upgrade to 10.4 without upgrading classic to 9.2 first, I'm just screwed? Will I have to downgrade back to 10.2 and do this over? I just refuse to believe that. There has to be a way.
There are.
One way is to copy a working OS 9.2.1 or 9.2.2 System Folder from another Mac. This will not be usable for booting (unless the other Mac is the same model as yours), but should work fine as Classic. This copying, such as burning it to a CD or copying to a Zip disk, ideally should be done while the donor machine is booted to OS 9. Note - although OSX can not be copied successfully using a Finder copy process (drag and drop or similar), OS 9 can be.
Another way is to acquire a retail OS 9.2.1 Install CD, and use it to install OS 9.2.1 (do not copy the System Folder from that, or any other OS 9 Install CD - it won't work. The System Folders on such CDs are non-standard, and will not work for anything when copied to another medium). This presupposes that the hard drive has had OS 9 drivers installed - if they have not been installed, the drive will not be mounted when the machine is booted to the retail OS 9.2.1 Install CD.

    Good evening,
after upgrading Iphoto 9.5 a page opened requiring to upgrade my library. As it did not work out,for fear of losing all my pictures I  loaded Iphoto 9.4.3  with Time machine but I had lost quite a few photos. As a matter of fact, after searching , I found them In Photo library in 'images' on my hard drive. When I double click, 9.5 appears with all my pictures. Therefore, I would like to use 9.5 just by by clicking on the icon down my finder and  not by being obliged to open my hard drive.
Would you please tell me what I should do. Thank you.
    Best regards,
    Robert

    Huh?
As it did not work out,for fear of losing all my pictures I  loaded Iphoto 9.4.3  with Time machine but I had lost quite a few photos. As a matter of fact, after searching , I found them In Photo library in 'images' on my hard drive. When I double click, 9.5 appears with all my pictures.
So, you have restored 9.4.3 from Time Machine but can see all your pictures in 9.5?
Do you have two version of iPhoto on your Machine?
And if you didn't update the Library, ("as it did not work out,") how can you see things in 9.5?
So, whatever set up you have is confusing.

    Try reinstall iPhoto:
    To re-install iPhoto
    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
2a: On 10.5:  Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows:  In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
    /var/db/receipts/
    2c: on 10.7 they're at
    /private/var/db/receipts
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
    3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
If you purchased it on the App Store or have a Recent Mac you can find it in your Purchases List.
If that fails then I think you need to reinstall the OS.

  • I currently have the iPhone 4 and want to upgrade to the 5S, but would that require a change of plan?

Im not sure if it would cause a 3G to 4G change?

The data plan is the whether or or not you have a 3G or 4G phone. However if you have the unlimited data plan and want to upgrade under contract, you will be required to change the data plan to a tiered data plan.

  • IPhone 3G -- 4 upgrade; apps won't update/install - verification required?

I upgraded my 3G to a 4. I backed up the 3G, went to the AT&T store, they switched over to the 4. I plugged the 4 back into my PC and restored the 3G backup. I had to re-enter some passwords but otherwise everything was restored.
However, I cannot install or update applications. When I try to do this, it says "Verification Required" and I have to hit "Continue." Then it says "Sign In Required" and I hit continue and enter my iTunes MS password. Then it pops up a credit card screen and it wants my 3-digit ID. I enter that and it Done and it pops up an "Address Verification" screen to pick my county.
At this point it gets stuck in a loop and no matter how many times I pick my county, it clears my entry and goes back to that screen.
I tried logging out and back in on the phone, no luck.
I tried updating from Settings, no luck.
I tried logging out and back in from iTunes, which let me enter all of this information, but the phone still keeps asking for it.
    I have restarted the computers.
    I have restarted the phone.
Unlike the other thread about this, I'm not using multiple accounts. This is very frustrating and irritating.

i can verify that this abject failure occurs on a 3G iPhone running iOS 4 as well.
do NOT NOT NOT "upgrade" to iOS 4 unless you absolutely must.
i get no requests for verification or agreement to boilerplate.
    i get no password prompts.
i have no restrictions in iTunes or on the phone to prevent apps installing.
i have restarted phone and computer repeatedly.
and yet the imbecilic software simply grays out the Apps tab in iTunes/Devices/my phone. it's not even as if it lost connection to the phone - if i rearrange apps on my phone itself, when i reconnect to iTunes the grayed-out App tab reflects the changes. music syncs fine. it just won't let me
    sync apps.
oh, and iOS 4 brought back the infernal 2-second delay every time you touch the screen in iPod mode. really effing annoying whenever you scroll in cover flow, or actually just all the time.
it makes me think Apple might actually have become evil enough to sabotage customers' old hardware in order to drive new iPhone and iPad sales. the less-cynical view might be that they're just really busy fixing antenna issues, but you can no longer be sure.

  • Upgrade to Tiger if I have Panther requirements?

Alright, thing now is that I realized that I think I may have all the requirements to upgrade to Tiger, when I bought an Apple-supplied card the ATI 128MB PCI graphics card. I have the cd version of Tiger just in case, but by buying this card will it support me now on Tiger? Cause I have enough HD space, more than least amount of RAM (384mb), a G3 350MHz CPU, built-in FireWire, and hopefully the right graphics card: ATI Rage 128mb PCI 16vram video card.

If you look at this graphic, you'll see that the B&W G3 is at the bottom of the list, meaning that its hardware just qualifies it for running Tiger. The B&W G3 that you're considering to purchase is the slowest model made - the 300 MHz. It undoubtedly has the stock Apple/ATI Rage 128 graphics card, which was a decent card back in '99 with 16 MBs of SGRAM. Obviously, it can't compare to newer cards using DDR memory and having more of it. How large is the hard drive on that B&W? If it's the very small 6 GB drive, you'd need to upgrade it to something more reasonable. You'd also need to buy a universal installer/retail version of Tiger, because your iMac's Restore disks won't install properly on a B&W G3. Additionally, you'd need to know if the B&W-300 has a DVD-ROM drive, to install Tiger from the DVD disks that it comes on. Apple-US had a trade-in option for CD media, but the directions on the form indicate that the offer has expired.
When the target computer is the oldest supported device to run a given OS version, you can expect it to be a bit more sluggish than newer models with hardware that's optimized to take advantage of the OS' features. Buying an 8 year-old computer with the idea of installing/running the latest OS on it is probably ill-advised, because of the related expenses of hardware upgrades. I'd recommend a slightly newer used Mac, like an AGP G4 or better. If you already owned this B&W and just wanted to try out Tiger on it (with little expectations as to performance), I'd have a different opinion.

  • Ever since I upgraded to firefox 5, a site that required flash player doesn't work - it worked with the older version

A site that worked on your old version doesn't work anymore. When I go to the page it says to download a plugin, but then it comes up with "no suitable plugins were found." I believe the site requires flash player. I have reinstalled it and it works with other programs that require it.

I wasn't able to get to any of those sites without having serious hanging issues. I just uninstalled Flash, rebooted, then reinstalled it. Everything seems to be working fine now.

  • I upgraded ipad to iOS5 and now it requires a passcode. My password no longer works.

I upgraded my Ipad to iOS5 and I now have a screen asking for a passcode.  I type in the passcode and I get an error message.  What do I do?

No idea what "tried everything" means.
Here is how you troubleshoot a password problem.
Go to your email providers web mail page and verify that you have a working username and password by logging into your account there. If you cannot log in there, look for the link to reset your password. Your email password is administered with your email provider.
Once you have a working password you need to remove any stored passwords in Thunderbird and replace with the new, working password.
From the menu bar select''' Tools-Options-Security-Passwords-Stored Passwords'''
Remove the passwords for the problem account. Close Thunderbird and restart it. You will be asked for a password. Enter the new password.
No menu bar with Tools? Press the '''alt '''key.
FYI: Thunderbird settings are stored in a different file from the program. Removing the program and reinstalling just keeps you busy for a little while and rarely fixes anything. As you have seen the old settings are picked up when Thunderbird is reinstalled.

  • OS X mail won't open after upgrade to 10.2.8...requires keychain password

Help please! I have upgraded one of the school secretaries eMac to OS 10.2.8 and now mail will not open. Instead, I get the message "Mail wants acess to keychain password or phrase".
Mail worked fine in 10.2.4 before the upgrade.
I have read several posts and keychain help but have found no solutions. Administrator password and mail password are not the same, if that makes any difference.
    Any help here is appreciated.
    Tom L

For future reference, when you're having keychain issues, you can always reset your password without having the old one by booting to install disk 1. 10.3.9 or earlier click the installer menu and choose reset password. 10.4 or higher, click the Utilites menu and choose reset password. Enter password, verify it. Quit reset password, quit installer, restart system. When you get back to the OS, go to System Preferences, go to accounts and choose to change your password. Even if you use the same password, it's okay because it will reset your keychain password to match your admin password.

  • Upgrade from FC6 to FC7 is it required to make a clean install?

    Hello
I have FC6 , if I buy the upgrade for FC7 do I need to install everything again as first time when I installed the whole suite of Final Cut Studio 2?. Is a clean install necessary or just the upgrade will be faster?
Is it really worth it to upgrade to FC7?. I am kind of skeptical of upgrades due to some previous bad experiences of regular upgrades of Motion 3
I will appreciate any tips you might have.
    Thank you

    I have very Good News.
Sunday morning I get a call from Apple Store, and with info I left
in an email earlier that morning, they had me come in and exchange
    v6 with v7.
I was quite pleased when I showed up,
that I added a full version of Shake for only a couple hundred extra.
    Now the tricky part.
I'm not sure how to do this now.
Everything just received is still in the shopping bag from Apple.
I suspect I have to remove v6, but not sure if uninstall is part of it.
I wonder, with having 4- 1TB drives, could I load Shake on clean drive #3,
and v7, then deal with v6 removal on drive #1?
Or does having the application on drive 3 force multiple drives to
gain access to photos and clips on drive 2.
Maybe it's not a big deal, as drive 1 would have to do the same thing.
I'm still sorta a rookie on the beast.
Maybe I have to do what was said earlier to the other persons post.
Anyone in the Mpls area specialize in MacPro?
    Thanks
