Upgrading a nonbacklit keyboard with a backlit one

Hi I am trying to upgrade my pavillion dv6t-quad core with a backlit keyboard, preferrably of a different color then just black. Since I got one that did not come with a backlit keyboard is it possible to do this upgrade? If so can you recommend a good site with reasonable prices where I can get the part? Thank you for your time.
Cheers,
Dragon

I need to know your exact model number. A few versions of the dv6 do allow a nonbacklit to be replaced with a backlit but only a very few models. The general rule is that you cannot. I believe the ones where it can work are in the dv6-3000 and dv6-4000 series so they are a few years old now.

  • Replace HP-DV6t keyboard with a backlit one ( like the HDX-16t's one)

I had my core i7 hp dv6t for a couple weeks and I love every bit of it except for the keyboard ! I really like the backlit keyboard from HDX-16t and i think it fits my laptop ! Can someone help me with this ? And if it works, where can I buy that backlit keyboard ?
    Thanks in advance

I agree ... backlit keyboard was much better.  Did you ever find out if you can do this??  I would love to know if possible and how to go about doing it.  Would replacing the keyboard void my warranty though?

  • Replacing Nonbacklit Keyboard with Backlit Keyboard

I am considering replacing a nonbacklit keyboard with a backlit keyboard on a T530. The hardware maintenance manual does not seem to show any difference between replacing nonbacklit or backlit keyboards.  The size and dimensions of each keyboard should be the same but I am concerned about possibly different connectors.  Has anybody tried it?

I did the upgrade on a T430 and it was plug and play, not difference in connectors.

Sure - if you can find a shop that will do it for you. If you want to DIY, you may be able to order a keyboard replacement from ifixit.com or powerbookmedic.com.

  • I want to replace my dv7-6199us standard keyboard with a backlit keyboard?

I need a backlit keyboard part number.
Can I replace my dv7-6199us  standard keyboard with a backlit keyboard? I have looked in the dv7 "Maintenance and Service Guide" for the dv7 with no success. I found the same keyboard without backlight. I have noticed the backlit keyboards in dv7s made after mine but I don't know how to find the part number for that keyboard.
    Thanks for your help.

    Hi,
The keyboard alone won't do the job. You need the motherboard on your machine has light CONNECTORS for the keyboard. I don't think your machine has this type of motherboard therefore you have to looking for a right montherboard first.

  • Upgrade W530 nonbacklit keyboard to backlit

    Hey folks,
I bought a slightly used W530 back this summer. I love this thing, it has all the power I need, an SSD+1TB HDD expansion, 1080p screen, etc. It checked all the boxes in what I wanted in a laptop. The only thing I forgot to check on was backlit keyboard... and of course, it doesn't have one. It's been fine without it, but with Christmas coming up, I may treat myself to the upgrade. I've seen the backlit keyboard for sale on ebay on other websites, and confirmed the swap is physically possible, but I haven't heard if there's anything you have to do in addition to physically installing it. For instance, right now FN+ space turns on the think light; with the backlit keyboard, I believe this activates the backlighting. Will the thinkpad automatically figure this out when the keyboard is installed or do I need to update the BIOS or something?
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!!!

My w530 came with a non-backlit keyboard. i bought one from ebay, the swap took three minutes, and no updates or other actions are rquired. Fn+space works as before, it cycles between backlight (two levels), thinklight and off.

  • Is it possible to updgrade G6-2313AX keyboard to a backlit one ?

    Hi,
Is it possible to upgrade the keyboard of a G6-2313AX  to backlit one ? I mean, do the motherboard have a connector for this ?
On other words, the up/down key size is ridiculous and difficult for gaming. So in case the baklit keyboard is not possible, can we be able to get a normal layout keyboard ( with the UP/DOWN keys with standard size )
    Your replies are much appreciated

  • Replacing a standard laptop keyboard with a backlit keyboard ??

Is it possible to obtain a backlit laptop keyboard replacement for a standard laptop keyboard? My computer is not that old but I use it late at night and the backlit keyboard would come in handy. Does anyone know if it is possible to purchase an upgrade for this?

    Hi,
Most likely you need few more things than just a keyboard with lights. First thing is you need somewhere to plug cables for lights that means you need a new motherboard and depending on your video card you may need new card, new cooling system ....
    Hope this makes sense.

  • Help: pb g4 15": change normal keyboard with backlit one

    Hi,
I've got a pb g4 15" 1.33ghz with a normal keyboard (no backlit). I'd like to replace it with a backlit one. Do you know if it is possible? Ok, I don't care about the ALS; it is enough to drive backlit with f8 f10 keys. I understand the my pb has no ALS sensor.
    Thanks for the help

    Hi Roberto
    Welcome to the Discussions.
Yes, it is possible to change the keyboard, go to www.pbfixit.com - where you'll be able to buy the keyboard as well.
I do not know how the F-keys will function - but someone in here should know...

  • Possible to replace non-backlit keyboard with backlit one?

I have a w530 without the backlit keyboard, can I get a backlit keyboard and switch it over? Is the backlight integrated with the keybaord itself?

    Dear Customer,
Welcome and Thank you for posting your query on HP Support Forum
It looks like you are trying to replace the notebook keyboard with a backlit keyboard if its possible
We will surely assist you with this issue
As far as I know its only the top end models have that premium backlit feature. This is a Envy notebook feature and
we cant have the same backlit keyboard on a entry level notebook. You should also know that Notebooks are not open architecture like desktops, we cannot mix and match parts just as they can with the desktop PC environment.
We need to check if backlit keyboard feature is listed for your notebook in the service and maintenance guide or not.
If it is listed there is a chance that you can go for it. Its just that the motherboard has to have the ZIF connector for the ribbon cable that provides power to the backlight.
Hope this helps, for any further queries reply to the post and feel free to join us again

    Hi,
The part number for a backlit us layout keyboard is: 698951-001. If you want more information, click on Support & Drivers button on top of this page, enter the model and look for Maintenance and Service Guide for Dv7 laptops in the User Guides section.

  • Dual keyboards with Snow Leopard

This may seem unconventional, but I prefer to use two keyboards with my computers, one for each hand. It's a far more versatile solution then traditional ergonomic keyboards, and allows me to use the Apple keyboards, which I've found to be very good keyboards.
Right now I have two keyboards hooked up to my MacBook, one of the full-length Apple keyboards, the other the smaller Apple keyboard without a number pad. Both are USB. The problem I'm running into is that modifier keys don't affect key presses on the other keyboard. That is, when I press shift on one keyboard, it activates only on that keyboard, not the other. Same goes for control, command option and even caps-lock. If I have to, I'll eventually adapt, but it'd be nice if there was a way to make those keys work across all keyboards (including the built-in one).
I've dug through the control panel and searched online pretty extensively, but since there are so few people using more then one keyboard with their computer, that I haven't been able to find any solutions for Mac OS (there are a few for Linux). If anyone has any ideas, I'd really appreciate it.

I believe your issue is because the data that gets sent out is a "keystroke", not "this combination of keys". Think of it as sending "s" vs "S", not "shift-s". A modifier key has to "modify" some other key, but is not a "keystroke" itself.
That said, perhaps you could use Sticky Keys (in Universal Access Preferences.) This would allow you to have a key "held down". I haven't tried it with multiple keyboards, but it's worth a shot.
BTW, I do use multiple keyboards: a Mac keyboard and old "clicky" IBM PS/2 keyboard (with a USB adapter.) But not for each hand. I find that I can type quicker and more accurately on the "clicky", so I do most of my word processing on that. Beyond that, I have a Belkin Nostromo for my left hand for gaming and other apps (e.g.: scrolling in web pages) but obviously not for typing. So I do sympathize with your desire for using both hands, (which is why I got the Nostromo) But other than old multiplayer games and virtual machines, I haven't heard of anyone using multiple keyboards simultaneously.
