Upgrading an 13" MacBook 10.4.11
Hello,
I need to upgrade my trusty old MacBook as it cannot have iTunes version I need for my Iphone to sync properly, and I seem to be coming across more and more "os 10.5 or higher required" messages. Am I right in thinking Snow Leopard is the way to go? Also, I really have no idea of backing up- what is the cheapest way of doing it, I have lots of photos -would be devastated to lose them. My husband has an iMac - can I use it to back-up? Also, are printer drivers generally upgrade-able on-line, or is this likely to mean new printer, too?
Many thanks
Olga
You can connect to your husband's iMac with a Firewire cable and use Target Mode to transfer your stuff over to his Mac. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661
You'll need a FireWire cable 6 pin to 6 pin if you both have FireWire 400. http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_c_1_8?url=search-alias%3Delectronics&field- keywords=firewire+cable&sprefix=firewire%2Caps%2C164
You can upgrade from 10.4 to 10.6 with no problems. Any program that runs under 10.4 will run under10.6. You might have to upgrade some drivers for printers, etc.... You would find the updated drivers on the printers website. And you will have to install Rosetta if you have any Power PC applications http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/article/snow_leopard_installing_rosetta/ I recently upgraded an older MacBook (model1,1) straight from 10.4 to 10.6. If you only want iPhoto or other single apps from iLife '11 you can get them from the App Store after you've upgraded to 10.6.6. iPhoto, iMovie or Garage Band for $15 each and Pages, Keynote or Numbers from iWork '09 for $20 each.
You can order a Snow Leopard 10.6 install disk for $29 as long as you have at least1gb of RAM and 5gb of free space on your hard drive. http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A?mco=MTY3ODQ5OTY
A 10.5 Leopard disk will run you over $150
Once you are at 10.6.8 you can buy Lion from the App Store if you have at least a model 2,1 MacBook. Lion will require at least 2gb of RAM but really needs 4gb to run smoothly. Also Lion doesn't run any Power PC programs. To see if you have any Power PC programs go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info. When System Profiler comes up select Applications under Software. Then look under kind to see if any of your applications are listed as Power PC. Universal and Intel will run under Lion.
Before Mac switched to Intel processors they used Power PC processors from 1994 to 2005. Power PC 601 through 604, G3, G4 and G5. Applications written for the Power PC processors need the application called Rosetta to run on Intel processors. This was part of the Operating System in 10.4 and 10.5 but was an optional install in 10.6. With 10.7 Lion Apple dropped all support for Power PC applications.

Frequent Crashes after upgrading to ML (Macbook Pro 15" 2010)
I have been experiencing numerous, frequent crashes ever since upgrading my computer (Macbook Pro, 15", 2010 model) to Mountain Lion from Snow Leopard. The crashes appear to be very random; they don't happen at startup and aren't associated with any particular application or action. For example, I once experienced a crash while opening a file in VLC. After restarting, I was able to use VLC without any problems, and instead experienced a crash when opening a bookmark in Safari (which wasn't a problem earlier). In all cases, the screen turns black for a second and then the computer forcibly restarts.
Below I have pasted the details of the error report that the computer wants to send to Apple. I've had nearly 20 of these since upgrading on Wednesday night, and I don't know if they are all the same. But hopefully someone can help me here; I don't know how to interpret this log in order to pinpoint what is causing the problem. This looks a lot like the "kernel panics" that others have reported, but I just don't know what that means or how to fix it.
Also, I ran Software Update and am currently up-to-date.
Thanks so much,
Anthony

I have just upgraded from a Macbook to a Macbook Air. I have been using a iomega external hard drive for Time Machine, which use a Firewire. However, Macbook Air's do not have a Firewire port and i cannot find an adaptor anywhere. Can anyone help?? Thanks
There has never been a reliable firewire ---> USB adapter suitable for external high speed storage. This was a major issue when the MacBooks lost the firewire port a number of years ago (Apple subsequently brought it back).
The only high speed port on the Air is the ThunderBolt port. There are external ThunderBolt drive options out there, but they're somewhat more expensive than traditional USB/FireWire options. -
I just upgraded my 2008 macbook pro to OS X Maverick from Snow Leopard but my computer is running a bit buggy and slow. How do I downgrade back down to snow leopard?
You would reinstall 10.6 using your installation DVD.
Out of curiosity, how much RAM do you have? Recent versions of OS X really shine with 4GB or more.

I'm having problems with my internet since I have upgraded. I am afraid to upgrade on my Macbook pro now. I don't want the upgrade to slow down my laptops. Any suggestions?
Wifi issues are one of the common issues being reported by users. There is not much you can do at this point but wait and hope that th 10.8.1 update will address these issues.

Can you upgrade the Apple MacBook MB466LL/A to 8gb ram
can you upgrade the Apple MacBook MB466LL/A to 8gb ram
Apple only tests the MacBook with the RAM that's affordable at the time of manufacture. At that time 4gb RAM sticks ran about $400 each. Once they've tested them they never go back as the RAM drops in price since they're on to the next model by then.
So (Apple) means what they first tested the MacBook at. (Actual) means how much RAM the MacBook is capable of handling. -
Why cant i upgrade my 17in macbook pro (s/w 10.6.8)to mavericks
why cant i upgrade my 17in macbook pro (s/w 10.6.8)to mavericks? I do not know what month it was built. I bought it as a refurbished by Apple a few months ago.
Check that your computer is compatible with Mountain Lion/Mavericks/Yosemite.
To check the model number hold down the option/alt key, go to the Apple menu and select System Information.
iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) model number 7,1 or higher
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) model number 5,1 or higher
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) model number 3,1 or higher
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) model number 2,1 or higher
Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) model number 3,1 or higher
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) model number 3,1 or higher
Xserve (Early 2009) model number 3,1 or higher
Your Mac needs:
OS X v10.6.8 or OS X Lion already installed
2 GB or more of memory (More is better - 4 GB minimum seems to be the consensus)
8 GB or more of available space
Check to make sure your applications are compatible. PowerPC applications are no longer supported after 10.6.
Application Compatibility
Applications Compatibility (2)
Do a backup before installing.
Your iMovie and iPhoto data should be good, but you will have to upgrade the applications.
If you decide the upgrade isn't worth it, you can share Mail, Calendars, and Contacts running Snow Leopard. Based on my experience, I don’t recommend syncing Contacts - created a lot of problems with duplicates. If you have 2 step verification enabled on your Apple ID, you will need to generate an application specific password for Mail, iCal, and Address Book. Apple ID - Manage
Snow Leopard iCloud - Address and iCal
Snow Leopard iCloud – iCal
Snow Leopard iCloud - Configuring Mail with Mac OS X v10.6 or iOS 4 -
i am upgrading my 2008 macbook to an ssd drive and want to save my settings. how do i save then? I have my files backed up with time machine ,but dont want to restore all files ,as there might be some junk backed up too. Help will be appretiated
When you restore from a Time Machine back up you can pick and chose what is restored. It is not an all or nothing process. Nor do you have to do the partial restores all at the same time. If days after the first partial restore you find something else you want you can restore just that.

Since the Yosemite upgrade on my macbook pro I have not been able to sync with my Nokia Lumia and assume that this is an Apple issue?
Two immediate questions:
1. Why is this posted in Servers and Enterprise Software?
2. What has this to do with Apple Remote Desktop?
If you have posted incorrectly, then you should try posting this in the proper forum. -

I am just afraid that taking it to the service will cost much more then the macbook is worth, and I guess that Apple does not care that it happend when I made the upgrade to mountain lion, at leased I could claim the money back for the mountain lion purchase
Thanks a lot for you help. -
I want to upgrade my ram macbook pro 15'' without retina to 16gb and want more than 1600 hz
I have a Mac book Pro 15 inch without retina I wish to upgrade the RAM 4 GB to 16GB and I want to putting a ram with more speed then 1600 GHz can someone please tell me what is the maximum and if possible where can I buy it from it has to be compatible with my mac or else it's pointless.
Regards AxlSorry, read the post as with retina.
Standard RAM:
4 GB
Maximum RAM:
16 GB*
Details:
4 GB of RAM is installed as two 2 GB modules, no slots free. *Apple officially supports a maximum of 8 GB of RAM, but third-parties have determined that this model actually is capable of using up to 16 GB of RAM with two 8 GB memory modules. In the US (and many other countries), site sponsor Other World Computing sells memory -- as well as other upgrades -- for this MacBook Pro.
http://www.everymac.com
The link you posted is compatible RAM and from a reputable company. I bought my 2 X 8 GB modules from crucial when I upgraded my MBP RAM to 16 GB.
Go with that kit.
Note that DDR3 1600 MHz RAM is the only type of RAM your machine takes.

Upgrading SSD on Macbook Pro Retina
I am considering getting the OWC SSD upgrade for my MacBook Pro-R. When I was shopping for one, I looked here and some guys recommended getting storage later either external or upgrade since speed, ram etc were more important. So I did just that, I opted for the bare minimum 256GB SSD.
http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/SSD/OWC/Aura_Pro_Retina_2012/
It's been good so far and I don't need to upgrade yet, but it will happen eventually, so I figured what the hay, might as well do it now so I don't have to transfer a lot of stuff later.
It is pretty straight forward upgrade, but my concern is OSX, how do I take it off my old SSD and put it on my new SSD? I'm not entirely familiar with Mac and OSX and there's been a lot of learning going on since I made the switch from Windows to Mac.
If you guys can explain, link, or refer me to how to restore my OSX on the new SSD that'll be greatly appreciated.
My assumption is I need to buy the external optical drive and make a back up CD/DVD.
Well thank you for reading and the help.
One more thing, how does upgrading my SSD effect my AppleCare and Warranty? I'd like to think it doesn't, but I have a strange feeling it does.Ninja edited your post
I see, so it's probably better to wait and see if Apple makes an upgrade that won't void my $300 AppleCare purchase. Son of a...

Youtube videos taking long time to load.
For the last month or so any Youtube video I watch takes around a minute before it starts playing. I have cleared my cache and cookies numerous times. I actually formatted my computer and upgraded to windows 8.1 today and this problem still persists.
