Upgrading broadband - need two HH5s - can it be do...

Hello,
we have just ordered an upgrade to fast broadband (engineer to arrive Tuesday afternoon), but I think we should cancel the upgrade because of the odd set-up we have.
The telephone/network set-up is unusual, and somewhat less than ideal, for historical reasons, as ever.  The telephone line comes into the house on the first floor, with the master socket in the main bedroom.  However, the main computer, for several years the only computer, is in an outbuilding near to the house, along with my hi-fi and much else.  Please note that the buildings are all of stone with walls a minimum of a foot thick. So, we have an approximately 30' long extension cable (not the cheap kit cable) running from the rear of the master socket out through the eaves and across to the outbuilding, where the home hub is. A couple of years ago, wanting to use laptops in the house, and with the home hub on a window-sill facing the house, I installed an Edimax Wi-Fi range extender on a widow-sill in the house (facing the outbuilding), thus providing network access through the ground floor of the house. So we have the telephone line into the house, out to the outbuilding, into the home hub which gives a network there and over to the extender in the home giving wifi in the house. Yes I know it's a bit silly but we are where we are. I also replaced the HH2 with a HH5 bought off e-bay last year to give me gigabit ethernet ports to support my new NAS drive which supports a music network, amonst other things.
The problem is that I would think that the BT engineer (OpenReach?) will almost certainly only install the new HH5 in the house, and will not want to connect up to the long extension; indeed he will probably just want to disconnect that.  As I now have two HH5s I have been think of making the old one (in the outbuilding) a slave/access-point connected via ethernet cable to the new one in the house. Unfortunately I think it would be impossible to expect the installer to provide an ethernet cable connection to the outbuilding even if I offer to pay extra.  This would leave the desktop computer (my main computer), the NAS and the hi-fi off the network.
Can anyone say what you can ask the installers to do, and if they would just be prepared to connect us up to fast broadband using the set-up described above, so that we have faster broadband even if not as good as it could be? I should say that I would not be able to install cables through stone walls and between buildings myself, and I do not know where to fine a 'home' installer around here (Herefordshire, between Hereford and Ross-on-Wye).
I am about to try and cancel the upgrade and return the new HH5, but would be very grateful to hear if anyone thinks this is my only option.

Thank you licquorice and georgemac for your quick and useful replies; they are much appreciated.
liquorice, I think I will now wait, and talk to the installer when he arrives and see if he will leave the set-up as it is at present, but just upgraded; thanks, as I feel a bit easier about this.
georgemac, thank you for saying much the same, I guess he will just take the new HH5 out of its box (it's still in the hall of the house), and use it on the master-socket for testing.  As for the powerline adapters for, I presume, an ethernet connection from house to outbuilding or vice-versa (the latter would be using them on the the current set-up), I have thought of that but the power supply to the outbuilding comes off a 'spur' from the consumer unit in the house, and feeds into another consumer unit in the outbuilding.  Thus I am concerned that there may be too many circuit-breakers in the connection, which I understand may cause some unreliabilty. Trust me, I would like to re-engineer the whole set-up, but that would be a big task, and we may move in a year or two, so....
Thank you both again, I will try to see if I can just upgrade the system as it is, and if not I guess I will decline the upgrade. Oh, one thing, I currently have a micro-filter and phone hanging off the telephone socket at the end of the outbuilding extension (along with the HH5 of course). That link you provided georgemac, is saying that the extension will become part of the broadband circuit so I guess I must lose my landline phone in the outbuilding. I wonder how I get out of that... ho-hum.
Thanks again to both of you.

With the recent upgrade to my computer I can no longer get Supply reports from my printer:  a red light is flashing and I don't know which ink cartridge needs replacing?

I happen to have an Epson printer as well - WorkForce 645 - that does show the supply levels.
Since I have one, I know that Apple recently updated the Epson printer software (less than two weeks ago).  Do you have the latest software?  If not, you can get it through the App Store or here:

Try it if you don't currently have it.  If you're not sure, you can download it - it can't hurt.

Is your Apple Intel-based, poppelmacbook?  If not, you should consider treating yourself to a new Mac. Last December I gave up my old because it just could not update...anything because it was not Intel-based.  Updating everything on this OS to 10.9 has been confusing for me, but I just could not work with that old Mac because the updates were too smart? for my 10.6.  It is upstairs now...for visiting family:  games, garage band, etc.--things I never did use.  Apple refurbished and purchase the extended warranty.  Apple loyalist since late 1980's.

  • IPhone 5 doesn't work with Mac OS 10.5.8 - do I need to ugrade to 10.6 and then upgrade to Mountain Lion or can I just upgrade to Mtn Lion right away?

iPhone 5 doesn't work with Mac OS 10.5.8 - do I need to ugrade to 10.6 and then upgrade to Mountain Lion or can I just upgrade to Mtn Lion right away?

At least to 10.6.8. You must do this to upgrade to Mountain Lion.
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
               terms apply.
    Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.

  • Adobe Standard 7.0 -- can I upgrade or need to repurchase?

A few years ago I purchased a ScanSnap scanner.  LOVE IT!  It came with Adobe Standard 7.0  The primary reason I "need" Adobe is to merge PDFs together when I do multiple scans.  A few weeks ago I upgraded to a MacBook Pro.  I downloaded the software for the ScanSnap, however after finding my old install CD for Adobe Standard 7.0 realized that it will not work as it is only for a Power PC ?
I looked into the upgrading options -- unless I know it will work, I don't have time at the moment to go from 7.0 to 7.0.1 to ... to ... and go to the highest upgrade hoping it works.
I am a 5th / 6th grade teacher -- so I see I can utilize an educator's discount, but $119 is my last resort if I have upgrade options!!!
    Can someone please advise me?!?!?!
Thanks in advance for your help
    Jen

    Good day Jen,
Unfortunately there's no way for you to get Acrobat 7.x installed on a newer, Intel-based Mac.  I'd recommend that you look into purchasing Adobe Acrobat X Professional Student and Teacher Edition if you qualify as it's a less expensive option than upgrading from Acrobat 7.0 Standard to Acrobat X Standard.
Please let us know if you have any questions.
    Kind regards,
    David

    Welcome to the Apple community.
This feature has been introduced to make stolen phones useless to those that have stolen them.
However it can also arise when the user has changed their Apple ID details with Apple and not made the same changes to their iCloud account/Find My Phone on their device before upgrading to iOS 7, or if you restore from a previous back up made before you changed your details.
The only solution is to change your Apple ID back to its previous state with Apple at My Apple ID, verify the changes, enter the password as requested on your device and then turn off "find my phone".
You should then change your Apple ID back to its current state, verify it once again, delete the iCloud account from your device and then log back in using your current Apple ID. Finally, turn "find my phone" back on once again.

Yes, 10.7 can just jump directly to 10.9; just check your Mac App Store to download.

Now that I have upgraded to iOS 7, how can I make it so that I don't need a password every time I use my iPad?

In v6 airport utility "Join a wireless network" is not available once the TC is setup.
You must reset to factory and try again using the selection options.. and it can fail or not come up.. This is an extremely poor way to setup a TC.. and you should NEVER EVER DO IT.. that is why apple removed it. Since you are joining wireless it makes no difference where the TC is located.. since it would become a dumb AP and turn off its ethernet ports.
Place it right next to your main modem router, plug in by ethernet, and select bridge mode and create a wireless network. Never use Join a wireless network..
However for completeness here is the method.
How do I setup my time capsule with wireless internet?
    Never ever do it.
If you need internet by wireless and backup to the TC.. then simply plug the TC directly into the Mac.
Run dual network.. Setup explained here.
Using Time Capsule hardwired to Mac for back-up only.
