Upgrading Broadband

Hi,
I have been trying to get my broadband upgraded to unlimited since November and it still isn't done.
I have phoned every week and keep getting lied to, keep being told it will be done within 24 hours, keep getting promised phone calls back and I never do. It is know the 6th January and I still waiting for my service to be upgraded.
I've been told people have tried to phone me back which is a lie, my complaints have been ignored, my e-mails have been ignored, what else do I have to do? I pay my bill on time month after month and for a what? A service like this. I think I have waited long enough!!! If nothing is done I will be cancelling and paying no termination fees as BT are breeching their end of the contract by not giving me what I want, oh and also I am now being charged £22.50 for 40gb internet instead of £18, what's all that about? One very unhappy customer here who will probably be an ex-customer by the end of next week if this isn't sorted ASAP

  • Upgrading broadband - need two HH5s - can it be do...

    Hello,
we have just ordered an upgrade to fast broadband (engineer to arrive Tuesday afternoon), but I think we should cancel the upgrade because of the odd set-up we have.
The telephone/network set-up is unusual, and somewhat less than ideal, for historical reasons, as ever.  The telephone line comes into the house on the first floor, with the master socket in the main bedroom.  However, the main computer, for several years the only computer, is in an outbuilding near to the house, along with my hi-fi and much else.  Please note that the buildings are all of stone with walls a minimum of a foot thick. So, we have an approximately 30' long extension cable (not the cheap kit cable) running from the rear of the master socket out through the eaves and across to the outbuilding, where the home hub is. A couple of years ago, wanting to use laptops in the house, and with the home hub on a window-sill facing the house, I installed an Edimax Wi-Fi range extender on a widow-sill in the house (facing the outbuilding), thus providing network access through the ground floor of the house. So we have the telephone line into the house, out to the outbuilding, into the home hub which gives a network there and over to the extender in the home giving wifi in the house. Yes I know it's a bit silly but we are where we are. I also replaced the HH2 with a HH5 bought off e-bay last year to give me gigabit ethernet ports to support my new NAS drive which supports a music network, amonst other things.
The problem is that I would think that the BT engineer (OpenReach?) will almost certainly only install the new HH5 in the house, and will not want to connect up to the long extension; indeed he will probably just want to disconnect that.  As I now have two HH5s I have been think of making the old one (in the outbuilding) a slave/access-point connected via ethernet cable to the new one in the house. Unfortunately I think it would be impossible to expect the installer to provide an ethernet cable connection to the outbuilding even if I offer to pay extra.  This would leave the desktop computer (my main computer), the NAS and the hi-fi off the network.
Can anyone say what you can ask the installers to do, and if they would just be prepared to connect us up to fast broadband using the set-up described above, so that we have faster broadband even if not as good as it could be? I should say that I would not be able to install cables through stone walls and between buildings myself, and I do not know where to fine a 'home' installer around here (Herefordshire, between Hereford and Ross-on-Wye).
I am about to try and cancel the upgrade and return the new HH5, but would be very grateful to hear if anyone thinks this is my only option.

Thank you licquorice and georgemac for your quick and useful replies; they are much appreciated.
liquorice, I think I will now wait, and talk to the installer when he arrives and see if he will leave the set-up as it is at present, but just upgraded; thanks, as I feel a bit easier about this.
georgemac, thank you for saying much the same, I guess he will just take the new HH5 out of its box (it's still in the hall of the house), and use it on the master-socket for testing.  As for the powerline adapters for, I presume, an ethernet connection from house to outbuilding or vice-versa (the latter would be using them on the the current set-up), I have thought of that but the power supply to the outbuilding comes off a 'spur' from the consumer unit in the house, and feeds into another consumer unit in the outbuilding.  Thus I am concerned that there may be too many circuit-breakers in the connection, which I understand may cause some unreliabilty. Trust me, I would like to re-engineer the whole set-up, but that would be a big task, and we may move in a year or two, so....
Thank you both again, I will try to see if I can just upgrade the system as it is, and if not I guess I will decline the upgrade. Oh, one thing, I currently have a micro-filter and phone hanging off the telephone socket at the end of the outbuilding extension (along with the HH5 of course). That link you provided georgemac, is saying that the extension will become part of the broadband circuit so I guess I must lose my landline phone in the outbuilding. I wonder how I get out of that... ho-hum.
Thanks again to both of you.

  • Upgrading Broadband Package

I'm trying to upgrade from BT Total Broadband Option 2 to the Unlimited Broadband package. However, when I check out it says that the package is unavailable and I have no idea why. Am I not able to upgrade or is it just an error with BT?

  • Upgrading broadband on behalf of somebody

    Hey guys
I was wondering if somebody out there could give me some advise!
I have recently moved back in with my dad and need to uppgrade the broadband. We are currently on "Option 1" limited to 10GB a month which we are constantly going over and we decided we wanted to go up one option to "Option 2" Which is unlimited and £16 a month but when we try to upgrade online, we click on the £16 option and it takes us to a page where we can only upgrand to the package we have now or "Option 3" with is £21 a month and too expencive... Where has the middle option gone!?
I see in other threads that you can call the UK sales team to get a better deal that we can afford, would I be able to do this on behalf of my dad? He isn't very technical and wouldn't know what to agree to.
    Thanks

Yes, you should be ok doing this, but make sure that you explain about your Dad, have his account number to hand and have him on hand to verify that this is what he wants to do but you are speaking on his behalf.
You will need his ecurity phrase to hand as well, eg mothers maiden name etc.
    Any problems, come back here.
Obviouly this request needs his verification for security purposes.

  • Problem upgrading Broadband package

I am on Broadband Option 1 (now just called Broadband) with a 10Gb monthly limit.
After incurring several £5 one-off charges for exceeding this over the past year, I've decided to upgrade to the next package which is unlimited (Broadband Unlimited) at £16pm.
On following the upgrade button links, and choosing Broadband Unlimited at £16 pm, and then entering my phone number and account number, I am presented with 2 options - the first my existing 10Gb option, the second Broadband Unlimited extra (unlimited BB + 50Gb cloud) at £21 pm.
Why do I not get offered the Broadband Unlimited package at £16 pm.?

  • I wish to Downgrade Phone plan & Upgrade Broadband...

    Hello,
I am currently on the Unlimited Evening & Weekend Calls Phone Calling Plan with 10GB limit Broadband Plan.
Because I use the internet more than I use the phone, I would like to be able to downgrade my Phone plan to Weekend Calls and upgrade my Broadband plan to Unlimited Broadband. Therefore costing me £1 extra a month overall since the Phone Downgrade would be £2 less a month and the Broadband Upgrade would be £3 extra a month.
I'm unable to downgrade my Phone plan online but is it possible for this to be done? Maybe by BT over the phone or something?
If so, please can you somebody tell me how i can set this up and what number to call?
And again if that can be done, I would then change my Broadband plan to the Unlimited Broadband at £13/month which I can do myself online.
Just thought it would be ideal to get it all done at the same time online or over the phone, preferably without having to speak to someone in India.
Please can somebody get back to me soon on this and let me know soon?
    Thanks.

Well what a waste of time and effort that was trying to call BT yesterday!!!
Because I just bought a BT Sport viewing card, my whole BT account resets again from new and I have to wait 12 months if I want to change my phone package
They are afraid of me wanting to leave BT within 12 months  I told them I've never attempted to try and leave BT. If I went with anyone else I wouldn't be able to use BT Vision. Can't they see that?  I certainly wouldn't go back to Sky. Virgin isn't available in my area.
They are more than welcome for me to spend more money and upgrade my Internet to Unlimited Broadband but can't downgrade the phone line until 12 months has elapsed after buying the viewing card
They kept saying 'BT Sport is free'. I said 'How can it be free, I had to pay £10 for a viewing card'. They said again 'BT Sport IS free'. It might be free AFTER you buy a viewing card with no subscription to pay. I said that if I had to pay anything over £0 and 0 pence then it's not free!
So had I changed my package before getting the viewing card, they may have been OK with that, but now I have to wait until 12 months has elapsed after buying my viewing card about 3 weeks ago
I'm not happy with you one bit BT
I ended up slamming the phone down on them

  • Unable to upgrade broadband package

I live in a rural area so I understand my broadband speed are not going to be great, I have been on a connection of between 1-2mb fluctuating between the two for years now, fluctuating mainly because it gets capped at some points (an engineer on one of his previous visit confirmed this while fixing a problem with the line) so I have been eagerly awaiting fibre in my area for some time.
The last engineer to come out confirmed our exchange has been enabled so it will be rolled out very soon, after checking on a regular occurrence at bt open reach website it finally said that my exchange is accepting orders for fibre, great I thought.
The first phone call I made t obt about upgrading I was told I would be paying an extra £5 a month to moved on to a fibre/copper line as it isn't fully fibre, and that my speed would be 2mb. Obviously I was less than thrilled not a week prior to this bt had contacted me about renewing my contract as it has been 24+ months and my previous one expired ( they offered me another 12 month contract at the same speed for 1/2 my current price) so paying £5 did make me laugh.
Thinking the guy was new I thanked him and phoned back again an hour later, this time I was told that there is no fibre avaliable in my area, after I told the person on the other end about my conversation he said " oh yes so it is" and that he could upgrade me to the faster broadband line and lock me into a 12 month contract, however when I asked what speed I would be getting he would only tell me 1.1mb.
I'm honestly very confused as to why I would lock myself into a 12 month contract, paying more and getting slower speeds?
When I asked if I were to go ahead and do this and my speed did not improve what my options would be I simply got silence before a " well that's up to you "
Not very helpful and now im contemplating changing providers to see if I can actually get a straight answer, who would of thought it would be this difficult.
So if a member of bt could contact me with some useful information on the speeds I could receive that would be appreciated as I don't see why I cannot get a faster speed if my line has been upgraded, im not looking for a 20-40 mb line but even a couple of mb increase would be well worth it for me, im not however going to lock into a contract when you cant even tell me the speed I would get.
A very confused and unsatisfied customer.....

The problem is that VDSL doesn't travel as well as ADSL.
Since ADSL was introduced, it's been tweaked quite a bit, and can give usable results over lines many kilometers long.
VDSL, as used on Infinity, was only designed to span the short hop between the roadside cabinet and the home.  Which doesn't really help in rural areas where the cabinets may be a long way from the home.
The end result is that if you are too far away from the green cabinet, VDSL can acually be slower than ADSL back to the exchange.

  • Upgrading Broadband Usage

    Hello!
I'm already an account holder with BT (as of last month) and I want to upgrade from 10GB to unlimited usage.
When I go through the process of upgrading it seems to be treating it like a new order - asking all the same questions as it did the first time even though I'm logged in... and finally I get near the end and it says
"We see that you currently have broadband with another provider. All you need to do now is get your MAC (Migration Authority Code) from them in order to easily and quickly switch to BT Total Broadband."
Ummm... I'm not switching provider, I'm already with BT. Why would BT need a MAC code from itself to just upgrade my usage limit?
In the list of providers to choose from it doesn't give the option of 'I'm with BT already'... so...
How am I supposed to upgrade?
    Thanks folks,

  • Upgrading Broadband Problems

    Hi.
We have been on the same broadband for a many years now, and its a fairly old package which gives 10GB. The past 3 months we have been charged each month for going over with usage, so decided to finally upgrade to an unlimited package.
I tried on line, but with no luck, so ended up phoning the help line to try to do it over the phone, but was told that I
couldn't upgrade as it wasn't on residential, but business use, and I would have to ring tomorrow, and speak with the business & residential team, the baffling thing is I'm not sure why they ever thought it was business, and not residential.
I'm now wondering whether we have been paying for business usage over the years, when it should have been residential.
Can anyone offer any advise please?
    Thank you

  • Upgrading Broadband to 40GB

I haven't had any broadband service for a good 3 weeks as it has been very inconsistant (unusable infact.)  I usually have my laptop and games console connected to it.  After investigating the problem, I was able to connect the laptop to my HomeHub via the cable so, clearly, there was a wireless issue.  I managed to get a 2nd HomeHub so have tried connecting to that, and it has worked.  Happy days!!!  So, to my problem...  after using NO internet (expect for the carrying out of fault investigation,) on the day that I get my BT Broadband working as it should, I get an email informing me that " We thought you'd like to know that, so far in December, you've used more than 7GB of your 10GB monthly usage allowance for your BT Total Broadband Option 1 service."  In no way can this be true.  Also, I have an email saying I have used 32GB for Nov, even with the lack of internet for a week of so.
With this in mind, I ask, If I upgrade to a 40GB package. would I have to start my contract again?

@Geoff93 - I know FON caps the bandwidth available to those using your connection. However, it is perfectly possible to piggy-back onto someone else's WIFI completely independent of FON and use up as much available bandwidth as they can without the WIFI owners knowledge or permission.
Tools for finding and accessing "protected" WIFI networks have been around almost as long WIFI networks themselves. WEP is particularly vulnerable, WPA fairs a little better (but not much), using MAC address whitelists helps but doesn't stop everyone, not broadcasting your SSID makes your network invisible to casual snoopers but not people that know what they're doing, etc. etc.
None of this is James Bond stuff either, its all pretty easy for moderately technical people that use a search engine.
NetStumbler and AirCrack are good examples of easy to use tools that can be (ab)used for this purpose...
    Cheers,

  • I upgraded broadband but I've still been overcharg...

    Hi,
I moved from PlusNet to BT choosing for their Option 1, 10GB Broadband package as that was the service I was on with PlusNet and we NEVER went over the 10GB. This package deal was advertised as the first 3 months free. Since being with BT we have been consistently overcharged up to £55 a month purely on Broadband, we don't even own a phone.
After we downloaded software on each laptop that monitored our usage we realised we were nowhere near the 40GB BT was suggesting. Despite proving this, trawling through these forums has shown that people with the same problem have been rebuffed by BT as the software is not "official" and they do not recognise it. It makes you start to wonder why BT don't show you your monitored usage like most other major providers and think that just telling you you've used too much is acceptable?
As with many people there isn't enough time to wait for a reply and I couldn't afford to continually get these extortionate bills, so I upgraded my account to the Option 2, 40GB package. During this time, myself and a housemate went away on holiday for two weeks and a week respectively, so there should have been barely any usage. Wrong. The next bill was £65 with usage of 45GB. If I'd upgraded, why have I been charged so much and how could I have possibly used so much?
Is there any body else who has similar problems or has managed to resolve anything with BT?

  • Trying to upgrade broadband option

Currently on Option 2 40Gb option and tried to update to Unlimited Broadband at £16 p/m but system keeps taking me to Unlimited Broadband Extra at £21 p/m.
As the cheaper option is sufficient for my needs I don't see why it will not allow me to update to the cheaper option or is this because it is cheaper than I am currently paying?
The extra offered by Unlimited Broadband Extra, e.g an extra 48GB of BT Cloud storage and BT Net Ptrotect Plus is of no interest to me, so is £60 wasted over a year.
Any real reason why I can't get the cheaper option?

Since having my broadband speed doubled, everytime i get disconnected it never reconnects at the right speed , usually is around 2000kbs down and 600kbs odd up when it should be around 16100kbs down and 1100kbs up, previously when on an 8mb connection it allways reconnected at the correct speed, keep having to reset router numerous times before it reconnects at the correct speed.

  • Why is Rural Broadband not a high priority

Why are BT dragging their heels getting rural areas kitted out with Fibre??
I live around 5 miles from the nearest town in a small village, for years now I have seen BT Infinity Ads on TV all the time advertising super fast broadband, while we have to suffer with "up to" 8mb that becomes ridiculous slow and tedious to use in the evenings and at weekends, So much so, that I had another BT line installed just so we could use more than one device at a time. I've also spent a fortune on new wiring, faceplates and Apple Airport Extreme routers.
Because BT don't think rural areas deserve better broadband and they would rather keep upgrading broadband equipment in towns I have to pay for two broadband option 3 services per month!
Although our speed tests show that we are supposedly getting :-
     Speed test conducted at 5:05am
Download speed achieved during the test was - 6.35 Mbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 0.6 Mbps-7.15 Mbps.
     Additional Information:
     Your DSL Connection Rate :8.13 Mbps(DOWN-STREAM), 0.45 Mbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 6.5 Mbps
These figures are only the max of what our lines are connected at, I've never seen 8.13mb down or 450k up, upstream is normally limited to between 270k to 380k, which is less than half that of the rural broadband speed we receive in our house in France (8mb service), that is further from the exchange and towns, but still manages to get 8mb down and between 840k to 1mb upstream..!
I'm guessing we also have a contention ratio issue, the amount of bandwidth shared between users is not good enough hence why evenings and weekends is tedious, and online gaming / streaming iplayer etc is near impossible!
we have no gas, and no fibre. you'd have thought that in areas such as this BT would have got together with British Gas to maximise their customer base!

even though you are 5miles from the nearest town you are still close enough to your exchange to get an 8mb connection speed.  your profile should be 7.15mb not 6.5mb and if you maintain connection 24/7 for 3/5 days maybe less the profile will rise automatically
check your exchange and see if 21CN enabled
    check exchange here
when was the last time you agreed a new contract?  if more than 12months then you should phone the options team and negotiate a better deal as £65 seems very high

We have no fixed line broadband.
At least 450 houses are screaming out for fixed line broadband. Its not like we are living out in the middle of nowhere!
I was told years ago the the extange has to be upgraded.
I got hopeful latley when i saw kn networks laying cables on the main road at the entrance of our estate.
I have heard since that the houses across the road from our estate has fixed line.
Phoning eircom enquiring on "when" has been a waste of time.
My neighbours and i feel we have been overlooked and forgotton about.
I have read other posts from eircom customers and am impressed with your honestly & helpful advise.

    2. When
     (If it helps , the markings on the eircom box are " S B K 1,  M D F)

Hi Mark, Thanks for your reply. The details I used in signing up to this forum is from 1 of 2 houses that I own.The details I used are from a house in the country miles from the Cork city.(Carraignavar). That house has broadband. The other house is the one that I am seeking information on.Its in Elmgrove,Sallybrook,Glanmire,Cork. I included a link of the exact location in my first post. This house is just outside Cork city and is in the middle of 3 large estates of about 500 houses and has absolutely no fixed-line broadband whatsoever. The markings on the exchange box are  SBK1  MDF We arena looking for NGB or efibre.   Just fixed-line broadband will do. All the surrounding areas of Glanmire have broadband. All except the 3 estates I mentioned in my 1st post. 1. Millbrook Estate, Sallybrook, Glanmire, Cork2. Barrymore Estate, Sallybrook, Glanmire, Cork3. Elmgrove Estate, Sallybrook, Glanmire Cork You said in your reply "From existing network / exchange capability to existing to possible customer base"Does this mean that is must be worthwhile for eircom to upgrade the network/exchange  ?The above estates have roughly 500 houses in them.Surely those figures alone would justify upgrading. The reason I titled the subject " The forgotten estates" is because I truly believe we have been forgotten about. All of the surrounding areas can receive eircom fixed line broadband. All except us. You also said in your reply "I am afraid there is no process to escalate or expedite a request for an exchange to be upgraded broadband"If you cant escalate or expedite a request for an upgrade, can you at least find out why we haven been upgraded already when all the surrounding areas have. All except us Supply & demand ?  There is demand from over 500 houses. I really think that this matter needs to be brought to the attention of somebody that can make decisions in eircom as I'm sure if they heard about it, they would find it hard to explain.  We aren't looking for NGB or efibre.   Just fixedline broadband will do.  Id appreciate any help or information. Kind Regards, Cashy
