Upgrading computers wanting to use same backup

I just upgraded to a MacPro from a PowerPC G5. I did the Migration (took approx. 6 hours) and although right before one minute from finishing, I got a message saying that computers had lost connection (which was not true). I had to turn computer off. When on again, it seemed that all the files were transfered anyways! Now, I would like to connect the external hard drive used for Time Machine on the old computer. Is there a protocol that I should follow before connecting the hard drive to the new computer? Any settings to be changed?

Do you mean you want to use it for Time Machine backups of the new Mac? If so, see #B5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).

Move "~/Pictures", or if just iPhoto pictures, "~/Pictures/iPhoto Library", to the new location.
If you moved iPhoto, open iPhoto with the option key held, like Tony T1 writes. Select "Other Library" and navigate to the new location.
To add the new location to the sidebar in Finder, just drag it onto the sidebar.
Same process for iTunes, or whole music folder.

I would just follow the instructions from this article to give your unused 4s to your spouse. Since you have already started using your 5s, you will still be receiving iMessages on that phone and will have no need to receive them on a device that has been replaced. I'm afraid you're out of luck. If it says incomplete you won't be able to access the backup.

Upgrading computer want to use current version of FCP

I currently use a Mac Book Pro and love it. I have FCP and LOGIC installed on it. I want to expand and get a new iMac (27inch). Can I install and use my current 'pro' software (FCP Studio and Logic) onto this new computer?
NB: this will mean that 2 computers will have the same software (with the same serial number) installed on them. (both computers and licenses will be under my name.)

The licensing agreement for the last several versions of Final Cut Studio/FCP states that you can install the software on one laptop and one desktop computer as long as they are both owner by the licensee and only one instance is in use at any given time.

No. All apps purchased are forever linked to the original ID and there is no way to transfer them.

RMAN won't perfom upgrade. You'll have to resotore your database using the Recovery Manager reference manual 8i: http://download-west.oracle.com/docs/cd/A87860_01/doc/server.817/a76990/toc.htm . (Watch out, the above mentioned reference is for RMAN 10g, there were many differences between 8i and 10g, if you try to use 10g syntax on an 8i rman it will partially work or won't work at all)
Install 8i on your target OS.
Restore/Recover with rman 8i your 8i rman backup.
Your rman backup must be located at the same path where it was when you obtained it on your source OS.
Once you have made sure it opens, proceed with upgrade.
Read upgrade guide for an specific upgrade procedure for 8i->10g.

2 ipods want to use same itunes

I bought a 5th gen w/vid and uploaded many CD's to it from my collection. I liked my ipod so much I bought my wife one IPOD nano. When I hooked up her nano and loaded it I tried to move a folder from itunes that i made for her to her new nano. Something happed because it shows there is 1.3 gigs of space taken on her nano but no songs show on her ipod or under her ipod playlist. No, there's nothing you can do except get an iPhone big enough to restore or setup as new then sync content back manually.

When you start the backup it will create a new sparsebundle.. (like a virtual disk that holds the backup on network drives) and you will be able to check that it is correct because it should be a new full backup.
Then you can do a full backup of one of the machines.. the other machine can continue to use the original backup.

What is the best way to configure my time capsule if I just want to use it for storage?

I have a time capsule that I just want to use as backup storage - I don't need it for accessing the internet. What is the best way to set it up? I just tried and it seems to override my normal internet WLAN, which isn't what I want. If I re-insate the existing WLAN, presumably the backup won't happen automatically on the time capsule. To work as a backup location the TC has to be part of the existing network.
The best way to achieve that is to plug the TC into the existing modem router and put it in bridge mode.
Apple lately have tried to force people to use the TC as the main router.. and the setup via airport utility pushes you in that direction but it is wrong.
You bridge it and use it as storage.. that is fine.. Simply turn off the wireless if you prefer to use the existing wireless, although for Macs the TC will often work better and you can pick up internet through it at the same time.
With access by wireless you cannot have two separate networks. If you try to do that, then you will have one connection with internet and no backup.. and another connection for backup with no internet and be forced to swap between the two.. do not do this!!
You can even setup wireless as roaming.. so same name and security and password as your existing modem router.. and allow the computer to determine which is the best signal to join.

Im searching everywhere and unable to locate how to set up my TM as a wireless back up only. Im already hooked up to the internet and only want to use the backup feature in TM. Can someone give me directions or point me to the thread? thanks

By TM, I take it that you mean Time Capsule, correct?
If you want to backup using wireless only to the Time Capsule, you have two basic configuration choices to consider:
1) Connect the Time Capsule to your existing wireless router using an ethernet connection, and turn off the wireless on the Time Capsule. Backups will occur over your current wireless network. For most users, this is the easiest and most reliable way to configure a Time Capsule for back ups.
2) Configure the Time Capsule to "join a wireless network". In this configuration, the Time Capsule can be located virtually anywhere that it can receive a good wireless signal because it becomes in effect, only a wireless backup device.
Configuring the Time Capsule to "join" a wireless network can be quite tricky, even for experienced users because you must know the exact type of security the wireless network is using. It sounds simple, but different manufacturers use different names for the same thing, and it can be a challenge to get the device configured correctly without multiple tries. If you already have an Apple main router, this will be much easier to configure.
