Upgrading Cpu.. Is It A Must To Update Bios???

MSI 865PE-LS (AMI BIOS 3.31a)
P4 2.6c 800FSB
1.5gb PC3200 DDR400
Radeon 9800 PRO 128mb
I am upgrading my processor from a P4 2.6c 800FSB to a P4 3.2c 800FSB. Do I have to update my bios if I do this?? I would rather not since I am pretty new to this. I would just like to put in the processor and some thermal paste and get going!!!
ANY INFO WOULD HELP.....
THANKS AGAIN

The right and the newest BIOS for your mobo is v2.1. You don't need to flash your BIOS, if you want to instal P4 3.2ghz Northwood. In case you want, .....do it with  MSI Live Update 3. Otherwise, there is a risk of installing wrong BIOS, and killing your mobo.

I dont really want to flash it unless I have to - On the MSI bios update monitor it aint clear if V5.60 supports the 'batron' 2600 as well as the normal XP 2600 cpu
And a little second point about clearning CMOS - again is this needed when upgradeing CPUs? - Can I damage anything if I aint got the correst Bios or not cleared the CMOS ??

  • Is it still possible to upgrade CPU on a G4 400MHz Titanium Powerbook?

I have a Titanium PowerBook G4 model (M7952) with a 17 inch screen, originally purchased in 2001. Over recent years I have successfully upgraded the hard drive to 128GB and the memory to 1GB SDRAM.
However, I have recently purchased Leopard and attempted to upgrade the system without first checking -and subsequently discovering - that my CPU speed is inadequate (currently only 400MHz, wheras required minimum for Leopard is 867MHz).
If anyone can advise me whether it is still possible to upgrade the processor on this particular model to the required specification for running Leopard - my initial searches have appeared to indicate this may not be possible - I would be very grateful.
    Thanks, Steve

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Even if it is possible, you won't be improving the system bus of the machine, so there will always be a bottleneck. Also software updates may not perform right, as the system is really only designed for built-in processor 867 Mhz or higher G4s, and not upgraded CPUs. Upgrade CPU support has to come entirely from the CPU vendor that supplies the upgrade for firmware updates, and compatibility. Essentially you will be creating yourself a jalopy. 10.4.11 is the max that will ron a 400 Mhz G4 reliably.

    Hi Ajay,
    Hope you are doing good.
If the issue persists, kindly update the kernel to the latest level as this will update the native libraries which the JVM needs. This is the next step in these kind of cases.

Please help and comment..i would be so grateful...thanks

    Hey Man,
I actually looked into your question since it was my question too.  Firstly, I'm an A+ Technician with exactly 20 years of experience in the field - that and a cup of tea will get you a cheap geek date at best.
In regards to the BIOS, on the N586 system, there is no new release of the BIOS (guess they consider it perfect and not needed.)
Stated, that particular motherboard works best with either a A6-4400M Dual Core or a A8-4500M Quadcore.  There are some slight upgrade benefits to the A8-4500M, but from the looks of it, the benefits are negligible considering the quadcore runs at 1.9 Ghz over the dual core's 2.7.   However, some folks really like the quadcore for gaming and 3D modeling.    A guy was even running Assassin's Creed on his N586 with the A8-4500M chip.
Some folks are also recommending the a10-4600m as a possible alternative to either - and it also works with that motherboard from what I gather.   Someone sold a n586 with that particular processor on eBay recently.
Still, my understanding from what I read is that the A8-5550M may not work without changing out the motherboard or cooling system - but I truly don't know for sure.  People 'say' it can be done, along with the A8-5750M, but I've not seen any examples in the wild.  Hoping someone out there can prove that wrong though - would be nice to see.

  • Blue screen of death after hardware upgrade - do I need updated BIOS?

I've upgraded my processor & double my memory and am aware that I need to put in a more powerful PSU (see seperate post on Seasonic PSUs).
However, I've also had a couple of Stop Errors and when I restart the machine and go through error reporting, Microsoft OCA tells me that my BIOS may not be compatible with the processor (new one is P4 3.2ghz, 800mhz FSB, 1mb L2 cache)
So... do I need to update the BIOS too, and if so, what is the best way to do it?
I've read various posts about the dangers of using the Windows application that MSI supplies. How do I go about doing it via DOS? (I'm a bit of a novice here so will need it spelling out in terms a really dumb idiot can understand).
    any advice gratefully received.

The 875P ( PCB 2) have native Prescott cpu support.
However, the cpu id - to correctly recognize differant cpu models - are being updated by bios.
Suggest you update to the latest biosversion ( 3.6 ) to cover all avaible socket 478 cpu models.

Read this how to update bios from DOS ( update bios only if your system is stable )
Also set memory voltage in bios to 2.7v.

I would also do a clean HDD format / WinXP sp1 installation, after you´ve changed hardware.

  • BIOS Must Be Updated to v2.7 P6N SLI

MSI Tech Support just sent the following instructions to update BIOS to v2.7; "After the bios update for the mb, the following steps must be done: Power off the system and clearing the cmos setting on JBAT1 jumper/button or cmos battery removed for as least 1 minute. Set all JBAT1 jumper and cmos battery into the system board to default position. Power on the system and go into the cmos setup and reload the cmos default settings. Re-configure the bios setting to match with your system configurations."
Would the above be considered "normal procedure" after updating BIOS? I'm currently using the original BIOS v2.0 and was unable to add additional RAM; Vista64 was slow to load and ran real slow. MSI Tech Support claims by following above instructions; I'll be able to add additional RAM. Should I use your USB Flash Drive tool to install BIOS? Once I completed above instructions; will I be able to set BIOS to Optimized like I had it before? Thanks ahead of time!

  • K9VGM-V Upgrading CPU

OK i am getting myself really confused here.
I have a K9VGM-V which is running BIOS v1.1 and i currently have an AMD Sempron 3200+ installed, i want to upgrade the processor to an AMD DUALCORE 5000+ (Athlon 64 X2)
Will it just be a case of fitting the new chip and turning it on or will i have to upgrade the BIOS?
The reason for the confusion is due to the CPU Support page on the MSI website which states this for the chips i am upgrading to.
    CPU                                                           FSB     Ratio     Result
    Athlon 64 x2 5000+ (G2, 65W) Black Edition     200     13      SINCE 1.8
But it also shows this for the chip that i am already running but i don't have v1.6 either
    CPU                                                 FSB     Ratio     Result
    Sempron Manila 3200+ (F2, 35W)     200     9      SINCE 1.6
Any help would be awesome thanks

BIOS 1.1 and impossible to use LiveUpdate! Is it truly and honestly a motherboard sold specifically as K9VGM-V? Not something you bought second-hand?? Speaking of such, I second Hanses advice.
Probably totally off and information overflow, but I found this:

  • Since upgrading to ios 5, some apps wont update and I can't remove them by syncing, since upgrading to ios 5, some apps wont update and I can't remove them by syncing

I have the latest IOS in my second gen ipod touch. Since upgrading, a bunch of apps refuse to update. I've tried removing them in itunes, so that I can try downloading them fresh, but itunes shows them removed, while they remain in the ipod. Is there anything I can do other than wiping it? At this point I feel really sorry that I updated the ios, since I never had this problem before, and I have little confidence the situation will improve. These are basic apps, like Paper Toss, Pinterest, skype, Angry Birds...

Ok, so I turned my ipod touch off for 10 minutes, restarted itunes, and checked to add the apps that aren't being removed from the ipod or updating, one at a time then syncing each time I add one. It's working! When I tried to do it en mass, all the apps would attempt to download but failed, asked me to retry or wait.  So, I'm slowly going through the 20+ app reinstalls. I've tried to fix this 5 times over the past 2 months, so whatever works is good.
FYI, it's a 2nd gen and is running iOS 5.

If it is any consolation this started happening to me today. I am in Toronto. I am wondering if there is a copyright issue here. I have done nothing to solve it - mostly because I suspect this has nothing to do with my computer.
p.s. My speculation about copyright is not correct. Comedy Central plays fine with Google Chrome. Have not yet tested Firefox.

  • Upgraded to Mavericks, no longer get software updates on my applications

I just upgraded from Mountain Lion to Mavericks last night, and now I can no longer download updates on my applications for my iMac.
Before upgrading, whenever I got a notification saying that there was an update available, I would simply click on the App Store icon on the dock and be directed to the Mac store, where I would click "download all".
After upgrading, when I get to the Mac store, a pop-up appears that asks for a password, along with a pre-filled box next to it that has an Apple ID I have never seen before. It does not allow me to change the Apple ID to my own.
This is a previously owned machine from 2013, that used to belong to someone else at the office of my employer. They had previously purchased all the software and applications for it, such as Final Cut Pro, and they had installed them all before shipping the iMac to me.
All I want to do is update the software to the latest version of iMovie, iPhoto and Final Cut Pro.
Could it be that somehow, after switching over to Mavericks, the system is now reverting to ask for my employer's Apple ID instead of my own? It seems weird though, because before upgrading to Mavericks, I was able to update any software any time that I got a notification -- about a dozen or so things in the week since the machine arrived.
And I would not think that there would be any problem with simply updating something like iMovie from last month's version to the one released on January 23.
