Upgrading DM3-pavilion motherboard

Hi,
My 4 year old dm3-pavilion recently died on me; it was a sleek little machine I liked to carry around and that was still OK to perform daily casual tasks. For those reasons and others, I would like to at least try and replace the faulty motherboard and revive it.
The model I bought is an exotic dm3-1003tx model (bought in Thailand, most noticeably with a QWERTY/Thai keyboard), with Intel SU7300 and discrete nVidia GeForce G 105M graphic chip.
Since the original motherboard is not easy to find (PN 584079-001, only a couple of offers on ebay from Japan), can anyone tell me:
- if it's OK to replace it with another SU7300 based motherboard (could be with or without the nvidia chip - I really don't need it),
- or even better upgrade to a SP9300 based motherboard to get a performance boost? If so, should I plan for any other change (looks like power consumption and bus frequency are higher with the SP9300 so maybe RAM... ?)
Is there any available tool around with HP part numbers compatibility?
Thank you

No, there is not a cross-reference matrix, useful as it would be. I think HP just makes too many different models and parts for somebody to keep track of all that. HP Service is based on replacement with the same part number so their internal service folks would not even have much use for such a thing, just us end users.
The motherboards have the cpu soldered on and there is only one Intel fan/heatsink part number listed so I would say if you replace your motherboard with this one:
580663-001
with the SP9300 you will be able to reuse your fan/heatsink. In case you do not have it here is the Service Manual:
Manual
All models use DDR2-800 memory and will accept up to 8 gigs. The various motherboards all appear to have the same ports and such and will have the same mounting points. You could even theoretically install an AMD-based motherboard but that would require an OS reinstall and I would not trade an Intel for an AMD anyway unless the AMD were a lot cheaper. An AMD board would also require a different heatsink, though.
You can buy the SP9300 motherboard for $45 shipped from eBay:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/580663-001-HP-Compaq-Motherboard-Pavilion-Dm3-Intel-Laptop-W-Sp9300-Cpu-5814...
The same seller also has the SU7300 board for a couple bucks less:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/584078-001-HP-DM3-1000-Laptop-Motherboard-w-Intel-SU7300-1-3GHz-CPU-/4006009...
I have purchased quite a bit from this seller and it looks like they have a lot of these on hand so must have disassembled quite a few dm3s. Maybe if you call them they can steer you in one direction or another based on actual hands-on experience. I admit that I have not had occasion to work on this exact model.

    Hi:
Below is the link to the quickspecs for the dc7900 business desktop series (It is not a Pavilion, BTW. Pavilions are consumer model PC's).
    http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/13029_ca/13029_ca.PDF
You will find the list of supported processors on pages 9 and 10.
If you plan to upgrade the processor, read the BIOS release notes first to determine if a BIOS or microcode update is needed before installing a different processor.  That information can be found on the PC's support and driver page.

  • Is it possible to upgrade a Pavilion laptop's CPU?

I'm looking to upgrade the CPU on my laptop that i brought a few years ago, It's a Pavilion dv9628nr.
    Currently have
    Chipset Quanta 30D1
    AMD Turion 64 X2 Dual-Core Mobile Technology TL-58
Is it possible? + What kind of processors will it accept?
    Full specs -- http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01161088&tmp_task=prodinfoCategory&lc=en&dlc=en...

Yes it is possible, but likely not a good idea. Here is the Service Manual:
    Manual
Up to a TL-66 was sold on the same motherboard so you can safely upgrade to that. So you would go from 1.9 ghz to 2.3 ghz.
But a TL-66 processor costs about $80 or so.
    ebay
The labor to install a new processor is going to be over $100. Doing it yourself is of course a possibility but the Pavilion dv9000 series is about the most difficult laptop there is to work on. Lots of screws and weird assemblies to remove and remember how to reinstall.
After all is said and done going from 1.9 to 2.3 ghz will not do very much for you in terms of actual speed. And to top it off the dv9000 series with AMD is notoriously unreliable and just not worth investing that kind of money into. If you put in a faster (hotter) processor you are just increasing the risk of failure. If it were mine I would sell the laptop you have (still worth maybe $300-350 used) and buy a new laptop with an Intel processor.

  • Upgrade Ram pavilion ze4500 ?

Hi, I'm trying to upgrade the Ram in my HP Pavilion ze4500 AMD.  I purchased two sticks of 512 mb DDR PC2100 Sodimm 266MHZ.  When I install this the memory the computer starts up and then shuts off.  I have installed the new Bios on HP's site.  I have tryed installing the memory twice, but the computer still turns on and then shuts down.. Any advice would be appreciated.  Thanks, Robin

    Hello claywoman,
Contrary to what the Crucial website says (i.e.: that you need PC2700 memory), the technical parameters of your purchased memory are correct. PC2100 is good memory for these laptops (I have one, ze4300). Of coyrse, PC2700 should also work on lower speed.
First, check that you can properly insert a memory module. It should fit snugly. Ask a friend who knows these things to check if you are unsure.
You need to do the following:
    1. Put back your original memory module - does your computer boot?
    If it does not:
    - either you have not correctly inserted the card,
    - (sadly) your motherboard became defective recently
There is also a remote chance that there is a difference between the two slots - try putting the original memory module in the other slot
    2. Suppose your computer booted with the original memory and you have mastered the correct insertion of a memory module
    Then:
    - put ONE 512MB module in one of the slots and try to boot
If it boots, check that the computer is functioning properly (ie: stable, use it for 1-2 hours)
    Then:
Remove this module and insert the other one and perform the same test.
If you get normal operation with these tests, try putting in both modules
Let us know ehat happened, saying exactly in what configuration the machine does not boot.
    Cheers:

  • Need help with upgrading my Pavilion's graphics... affordably

    Hi all,
    New member here :-).
Ok...I am having trouble with a graphics card I just got. It's the EVGA GeForce GT 730 2GB GDDR5 64bit DVI/HDMI/VGA Low Profile Graphics Card 02G-P3-3733-KR. It's a very good entry level card according to every one I've talked to. It was reasonably priced so I bought one. When I installed it all I get is an amber power light and beeping sound. So I contact EVGA to see if it's incompatible with my computer model. This is what they said: "We do apologize for any issues with your GT 730. Your hardware should be sufficient to run the graphics card; however, you will need to remove any ATI/AMD software or drivers prior to installing our NVIDIA based graphics card, as this can cause driver conflicts. Although this graphics card does not require a UEFI motherboard BIOS, you may want to check with HP to see if this system can run 700 series NVIDIA graphics cards." Sooo... based on that last part I underlined, can this computer run that model of card?
Oh... another note: I guess the card could be defective too. I always seem to get the dud of the bunch if there is one. LOL. If that's the case I'll mail it back to Amazon.
My official warranty support has run out so you're the only guys and gals that can help me with this. Any info or advice will be greatly appreciated. Or if you can recommend any other graphics card upgrades that would work, that would be awesome too. Thanks so much in advance!!!
Just in case you didn't see it up top, the make and model is Pavilion P6-2120 H2M53AA#ABA.

    Hi,
Please post the HP product number for your PC. How to Find the HP Model Number and the HP Product Number or let HP automatically find your PC model number and HP network attached printers. This will allow others to review your issue, make suggestions and review your responses. This is usually the best way to get assistance.
The quote about removing AMD drivers from EVGA seems to be bogus.  I have multiple EGVA graphics cards and none of the printed directions ever mention removing AMD drivers.  I have run and removed AMD and NVIDIA graphics cards without having to remove the previous drivers.
If your PC doesn't have a version 8 BIOS then the NVIDIA 7xx graphics cards may not work.

    Hi,
The main problem you are going to face is your PC only has a 160W Power Supply Unit.  Without upgrading your PSU, you will struggle to find any card that will improve your graphics capability.

  • Power supply upgrade HP Pavilion p7-1423w

Hello forum! I have an HP Pavilion p7-1423w.  Looking for a power supply upgrade that can accomodate more than one hard drive and/or SSD and more than one DVD/BD player. Don't want to add any adapters. (Last inline adapter I got from HP literally caught FIRE and destroyed my previous PC!)
Anyone know any compatible power supplies I can use that come with plugs I'm seeking?
Also, if I do add an SSD, is there anyway of having it run the operating system? (Make it the primary drive?)
    Thanks if anyone can help.

  • Upgrading a Pavilion h8-1010be

    Hi,
I recently bought a h8-1010be and knew it isn't really good for gaming.
But I thought of upgrading later so. I'm planning to upgrade the gpu GT530 to
a GTX 560 hawx and the psu 460w  to something near the 750 watt, because I
want to get a second GTX560 TI in the future and have them in SLi. I know that the motherboard H67
isn't capable of doing so so I have to upgrade that too.
So can someone tell me if this can work and also tell me which brand I should get for the psu, gpu and motherboard?
    Thanks, RG

    Randomguy, welcome to the forum.
The problem with changing motherboards is that your Recovery Discs will no longer work.  HP tattos their motherboards with the major components of the computer.  So, when the you begin Recovery it checks the mobo for the tatto.  Some of the connectors may not match, such as, the Power Button.  Also, you have to assure that the hole configuration of the motherboard matches the standoffs in the case.  If they don't match you could cause a short that would fry the motherboard.
Another thing to consider is smaller mid-size cases aren't the best for airflow.  It is difficult to route the cables in a way that they don't block the airflow to all of the components.  With a bigger power supply unit (PSU) and two video cards there will be considerably more heat developed.
With all of this said, I will give you some examples of what you will need.
Here is an ASUS motherboard that appears to meet your requirements.  It is a bit expensive.  However, if you decide not to buy it, you can use it as a sample of what you need.  The existing CPU and memory will fit the motherboard.  You would have to get the hole configuration from the manufacturer's Tech Support.  It would be good to ask them their opinion of installing it in a mid-size case with SLI.
I like Corsair and OCZ PSU's.  These manufacturers make good, reasonably priced, products.  You should measure the current PSU and compare the measurements to the one that you choose.
Now for video cards, I like XFX, BFG, EVGA, Sapphire and PNY in that order.  I have come to this belief from personal experience and gaming/enthusiast forums.  Because of the size of the case, I suggest staying under 9" in length.  The card in the link that I provided is a good example of a card that will work.

  • Video Upgrade for Pavilion a430n

I'd like to upgrade the video card in my Pavilion a430n but I don't know if it would make sense to do it. A friend of mine said that you can't put mag wheels on an Escort and expect it to go any faster.
I did install a Nvidia Geforce 6200 card some time ago which works okay for most things. I'm an avid adventure gamer and according to a game I installed recently, I have "low end hardware". I don't have any PCI express slots so the card would have to be PCI and those are hard to find.
So what's the best graphics card that I could get that would be compatible with my computer?

    Hi,
If you are an avid gamer then it's time for a replacement PC.
HP has some very good PCs for gaming depending how you configure the PC and are willing to spend.

  • Memory Upgrade for Pavilion DM4-1210TX

    Hello,
I have a first gen Pavilion DM4-1210TX running WIndows 7 home on 2GB memory.
    The current 2 GB memory is a PC3 10600S. I assume it is a DDR3 at 1333Mhz.
Problem is, I've tried to upgrade by putting in 1 brand new Kingston 8GB DDR3 1333Mhz ram. Of course I took out the original 2GB ram first. The BIOS recognizes the new 8 GB ram.
But all I get is a Blue screen after the starting screen.
I'm told my generation of this laptop is not compatible with all brand new DDR3 memory.
Is this correct? And any reason why?
    Thanks.

  • Upgraded CPU and motherboard

How do I make arch get back in touch with the install? Do I need to delete a couple files?  Rerun mkinitcpio?  I can chroot back into it, just need to know what to do.  Thanks.

I'm sorry, I meant to get back to you guys on this, but couldn't.  Arch is up, baybe.
There wasn't really a problem, actually.  You think kernel panic is a problem, and it is, but in this case it was something I caused before I even switched the motherboard and CPU.
I can't remember what it was because I had not been using arch for some time.  I can say I do know I left it with a kernel panic, before, and just never bothered fixing it..and then...
...on top of that the image configuration file had specified modules for the old motherboard.  So, I just updated with pacman, and set the configuration to default, re-ran mkinitcpio and voila.  (Sorry, I nearly forgot to mention it was necessary to regenerate the xorg.conf)  So you see, had I not been monkeying around with it so much before, it would have just worked.  LOL.
But now that I have your attention, I'm wondering why the system seems noticeably less responsive than a much slower VIA motherboard that I had been using.  The new one is a K8T800 with an Opteron 144 in dual channel with 1gb of RAM and a 6600GT 128-bit 128mb AGP card.  It replaced an Nforce2.  The more responsive system is an AMD 1700+ with 512mb of RAM in single-channel with a Dell OEM MX4000 64-bit video card using 64mb of RAM.  It seems like the hesitation is DMA related, as the Hdd always reads while the application waits.  Any thoughts at all, including why rain has to be so cold, are entirely welcome.
Additionally, glxgears gives FPS about half what it should be.
