Upgrading Emac 700

Hi guys i wanted to upgrade my Emac 700 motherboard, processor etc. Can it be done and where? I live in the UK. Thanks. Lee

The main logic board (including the processor) cannot be upgraded. The hard drive, RAM, and certain other things can, but it's not easy, nor cheap, nor even fun.
I'd strongly urge you to consdier a newer Mac. A refurbished Mac Mini is about the cheapest route, if budget is an issue.

  • Screen spanning emac 700 MHz

    Hello all,
I presume this is a quite stupid question, but here goes; is it possible to do screen spanning with a 700 MHz eMac? I've got a Iiyama Vision Mater Pro 455 here - and I'd like to span the screen instead of mirror it completely. That way I can edit much more easily with FCP.
Is there any way to do this through software? (I tried Screen Spanning Doctor, but they've excluded the 700 MHz) Or do I need to upgrade the hardware - if so, what hardware?
    Thanks a bunch everybody!
    eMac 700 MHz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    it doesn't work with a 700 MHz.
So I guess if it isn't possible I need to upgrade the hardware. Is this possible?
Sorry, I missed that you'd already tried it; apologies. But if Screen Spanning Doctor doesn't work, you may be out of luck. It's not possible to upgrade the video chip in your eMac, and I don't think a later-model eMac logic board would fit in your eMac's case, though I can't say for sure. Even if it is possible, it's probably not going to be cost-effective. Logic boards for 1GHz eMacs are going for over $300.00 US on the sites I've found that carry them, and you could probably buy an entire 1Ghz eMac for not much more, particularly if you sell yours and apply the proceed toward the purchase of the later-model unit.

  • Upgrade emac

I have an emac running os 10.3.9 What os can I upgrade to and will it be advantageous? the machine has 768 MB od ram how much can it be increased?
Is running an external drive with a firewire connection better than usb 2.0?
Thank you in advance for any help
    <edited by host>

The "LRX" at the end of your serial number indicates that you have a first-generation eMac running no faster than 800 mHz (reference article: eMac: How to locate the serial number and identify your model). Therefore Tiger (OS 10.4.11) is the newest OS you can install.
That model is also limited to a maximum of 1G or RAM (2 x 512MB modules). I recently upgraded my daughter's eMac 700 to 10.4.11 and it runs fine on 768MB RAM for routine mail and surfing. No eMac of that generation will handle newer web video content very well regardless of what you add/upgrade.
As an aside, it is not considered "safe" to post your entire serial number in a thread or in your equipment line. I've asked the Hosts to edit it for you.

  • Any way to add USB 2 to eMac 700 combo?

iPod died and have been offered a 5G one as replacement but relies on USB 2 - I only have Firewire. Any ideas? I plan to upgrade to new Mac in the Autumn but in no position to do so yet so upgrading eMac would be perferable - if possible...

    Can't be done.
I would just try to stick it out with USB1 until next fall if I were you. Yes, compared to firewire, it is painfully slow but it depends on how much data you really want to transfer at any given time. My daughter for example has her music on an old beige G3 with USB1.1 only and she synchronizes her iPod mini without problems. Yes, it does take as much as a couple of minutes PER SONG to update but how often do you really transfer hundreds of songs in one shot? If you do, set it up over night.

  • EMac 700 fan CFM?

I'm planning on replacing the case fan in my eMac 700.
I've searched this forum and googled everywhere for information on how much air the stock fan pushes, what its CFM is.
Does anyone know and if so, would you tell me, please?
    Many thanks.

Actually, because it has a relatively low 2800 rpm rotational speed for a unit its size, it only pushes 2.2 cubic feet per minute.
But matching it is impossible. While the basic fan is an NMB Technologies 4710KL-04W unit, it is housed in a custom shroud. The fan blades and motor are integrated into this housing, and cannot be removed without destroying it. The entire fan and shroud assembly, with gaskets, is easily removable from the remainder of the AC inlet and filter frame.
This is not an off-the-shelf item, and the fan and AC inlet assembly for the nVidia graphics driven eMac product line is no longer available from Apple. When it was, users would likely have paid about $ 59.00 for it. Expensive for a fan alone, but in line with the cost of similar assemblies. The later 922-5866 assembly for ATI graphics driven models, which is reasonably similar but not interchangeable, is still available.
If you are interested in a drop in replacement for your original fan alone, write to me at the address listed in my Public Profile.

  • Networking Tigerized eMac 700 MHz and PM 7200 OS7.6.1 - need help!

    Hello,
I've looked on the boards and hit up Google but to no avail so I thought I'd try to ask in this forum for the help I need in sorting out my problem.
I have an eMac 700MHz, and am trying to connect my old (but functioning) PowerMac 7200. I want to back up a few bits of data and then format the HDD and reinstall an OS on it before selling/tossing it.
I tried to do this using an Ethernet cable. On the eMac in the Network view, I'd get a greyed out image of the PM, but it tells me that I can't get anywhere as there is an incompatibility in Apple Talk versions being used.
The PowerMac is old and only has 16MB of RAM. I'm not keen to buy a copy of OS8+ just to transfer less than a CD-R's worth of old mail and docs. Would that it had USB, I'd plug in a thumb drive or my iPod Shuffle.
The HDD is also pretty full - maybe 40MB of the 500MB is free. I tried to use a CD-R in the drive that I'd burnt on the eMac, but the PM wouldn't recognize it saying that the thing was unreadable. Have standards changed that much?
What's frustrating about this is I bought it second-hand from an Apple shop in '99, but they didn't give me any OS discs. Back then I was a tad more naive about computers and such. Now I wonder how they got away with it, and if any of the software I might have otherwise received could have helped me.
Any assistance that can be provided - any at all! - would be most welcome. I'm trying to tidy up the house here since a cohabiting family member has become unwell, and it'd free up space I could use for other things.
    Thanks in advance,
    Hoopy

No need to change the name of the OS 9 System Folder since the folder order list doesn't matter. It sounds as if you need to re-bless the OS 9 System Folder, per the instructions under No "blessed" Mac OS 9 System Folder in Classic doesn't start, Mac OS 9 not installed or recognized.
You may also find OS X: How to Perform Mac OS 9 Clean Install useful. Some posters have noted problems with natively booting OS 9 after upgrading to Tiger, although I had no problems a while back when I booted my office Quicksilver G4 in OS 9 to try to get HP all-in-one drivers installed for use in Classic.
Cavet: when the 700 MHz eMac shipped, it was formatted to be a dual boot machine. If at any time since then you reformatted the hard drive using the OS X Install disc, there's a gotcha: OS X does not by default include the OS 9 boot driver. That has to explicitly enabled. If the OS 9 drivers are missing, I'm not aware of any way to reinstall the OS 9 drivers without having to reformat the hard drive, although someone in the OS 9 or Classic forums may be better able to help.

  • Upgrade eMac 10.2.4

OK, my first post here so don't think I'm an idiot. Still cranking along on an eMac 10.2.4. From what I have heard, to upgrade I'm better off going with Tiger. The main reason I'm looking to upgrade is I very taken with Ilife. I'm running 700 MHz and
384 MB. I have no other hard drive to back up to but still have most of my applications
on CD and plan on copying others on CD in order to do a clean install. First question is
do all versions of Tiger come with Ilife ? Can I go from 10.2.4 to Tiger with out any upgrades ? Does Tiger still work with the Classic environment ? It's just before I spend $125.00 , I want to make sure it will work. And with a clean install, does one lose everything ? Thanks in advance, I will sit down and listen to my answer.

    Hi bagshot!
    Here is some additional information.
If your Mac meets the Tiger System Requirements, Tiger is available for purchase at The Apple Store (U.S.).
The RAM System Requirement, is the bare minimum, and for optimum performance, more is recommended.
If you know what to look for, a Full Retail Version, of the Tiger Install DVD, can also be purchased, sometimes less expensively, at some online Apple retailers, Amazon, eBay, FastMac, HardCore Mac, AllMac, etc.
This is the correct one Mac OS X 10.4.6 Tiger, (DVD) Retail, selling for $159.95, at FastMac.
And at HardCore Mac, selling for $199.99.
However, notice that both, are more expensive, than, the The Apple Store (U.S.), selling for $129.00.
As posted, be sure not to purchase grey, upgrade or machine specific CDs or DVDs.
    Tiger is on DVD.
The discs should look exactly like the images in the above links, and not say Upgrade, CPU Drop-in DVD, or "This software is part of a hardware bundle purchase - not to be sold seperately." on them.

    Caveat Emptor!
If any are presently available, examine these items very carefully, and if in doubt, ask questions of the seller before purchase!
    Tiger On eBay
Once Tiger 10.4.x is installed, you can use the PPC 10.4.11 Combo Update, to upgrade to the current version.
As posted, Tiger 10.4.x ships on a DVD, and the eMac / 700MHZ, has a standard 32X CD-ROM optical drive, so you will have to use an alternative method of installation.
Info here Installing Tiger Using Firewire Target Disk Mode.
And here Installing Tiger Without A DVD Drive.
The Tiger Media Exchange Program, referred to, is no longer available.
There is also a version available on CDs, at FastMac, for $179.99.

  • Upgrade eMac or Buy New iMac

I've got an obsolete ol' eMac running Mac OSX 1.3.9, as I never upgraded to Tiger. Well now that Leopard's come along, I figure I might as well go for it. However, my eMac's only got 512MB of memory and I'd need to spend like $100 or more on 1GB of memory alone just to run Leopard. On top of that, I need another external hard drive, and my eMac's fan is loud (though I guess there's nothing wrong with it exactly, it's just being loud and weird).
All that said, would it be worth it to even bother upgrading my eMac and everything, or should I just get a new iMac? I mean eMac's are already obsolete as it is, and it'd be a waste of money if I upgraded it now and in a year or so just ended up having to buy a new computer for some reason anyway (such as if this one dies, like if the wack fan leads to it's demise or something)...

Obsolete! Older, yes. No longer sold, yes, but gosh dag nabbit, my old eMac is still my primary machine and does the job very well with everything I need it to do (video editing, iTunes, iPod, etc.). That said, I have been drooling over the new iMacs lately, but this eMac still has a lot of life left in it.
But back to your eMac. First thing I would do is invest in a nice external hard drive if you do not have one. Get one that can be connected via Firewire so you can take advantage of Firewire speed if your eMac is an older model without USB2 ports. Then back up everything important to that external.
An external is not a bad investment at all, even for an old machine, because it can go with you when you upgrade so there is no risk of "leaving it behind" if the eMac dies. If and when you get a new iMac, the drive can simple be moved to that machine and you keep using it. So regardless of which way you go, keep the eMac or move to an iMac, the external hard drive is still a great idea to protect your irreplaceable data (family digital photos, home videos, etc.).
As to the eMac, if you wanted to upgrade the operating system, I would look into getting a copy of Tiger. It is a nice upgrade to Panther (10.3.9) and with Leopard (10.5) out, will should start to see copies of Tiger for very affordable prices. While more would be better, under Tiger, you can probably do fine with the 512MB RAM you have now if you don't do any sort of heavy processing.
So like the others, a new iMac would be fantastic and you wouldn't regret it. But if you want to stick with the eMac for a bit more, get the external hard drive anyway as you will want it to backup even if you get the iMac. Now either continue to use the eMac as is (10.3.9 & 512MB) or find a cheap copy of Tiger and upgrade to that and stick with the same RAM and just turn off some of the memory hogging eye candy in Tiger like the Widgets. I bet if you looked around you might be able to find Tiger for $50-ish so your total upgrade cost is $50 (the external hard drive I don't count since it will go with you to the iMac).

  • Upgrading eMac 10.2.8 to Panther - Are eMac OS 10.3 install discs prefered?

My original eMac came with the Jaguar 10.2 installed (and included the eMac 10.2 installation discs).
I have since upgraded as far as 10.2.8, but am considering upgrading to 10.3+ (possibly 10.4+ eventually).
Would I still be able to keep the Apple OS 10.2 "Classic" (OS 9.2) installed after doing the upgrade to Panther? Or would installing Panther make the "classic" application not function any more under Panther?
My real question is: would it be better to get may hands on the actual original eMac Panther (10.3+) installer discs .... or will any Panther 10.3+ installer discs be just as effective for upgrading the eMac. I would assume it would be better to obtain the original Panther instalation discs for the eMac (from eBay, etc.)?
Also, would there be any problems finally installing Tiger (10.4+) on an older eMac. I have the 880 mhz (1 gb RAM) eMac version (2002 - 2003), and I am wondering how far I could upgrade this eMac without pushing the limits of it's capabilities?
Any suggestions or comments would be appreciated. Thanks
    -David
    800 mhz eMac/Superdrive Mac OS X (10.2.x) (2) LaCie External Hard Drives (120 -320), 1 GB RAM

A 800 MHz eMac with 1 GB of RAM will easily run Tiger, and Classic will continue to run. If you're upgrading, since you'll need the retail (black label) disc as roam as already noted, by bother stpping at 10.3.x? Just go direct to 10.4, following the guide in Gulliver - Tiger Upgrade Guide. You'll need about 5 GB free space on the hard drive to do an archive & install update; you can lower that by doing an upgrade install and/or using the installer option to select only the language support you actually need (e.g., if you only use English, you can save about 1 GB but leaving the other languages out, or by running Monolingual if you've already done the upgrade). Note that besides the OS, you'll need to update any third-party disk utilities as well (see Only use Mac OS X 10.4-compatible disk utilities with Mac OS X 10.4 volumes).

  • System Administrator Password Reset Q after Upgrade eMac

I recently upgraded my Moms eMac from 40GB to 80GB. It took me about one hour and I booted it up. The drive was from my broken eMac. I am trying to update some of the software (Apple Download) and it will not allow me to do any changes. I keep getting an error to enter a admin name and password. I never set up a password on any of my machines, how do I reset it? I already tried putting in the OS disk 1, choosing reset password and still the same error message.
    The message reads...
Type an administrators name and password to allow DiskManagementTool to make changes. Then there is a field for Name and Password. I don't know what password it would be since I always leave it blank.
    Any ideas? thanks!

You always need to enter an admin username, but if there is no password you can leave the field blank.

  • Kernel upgrade to 700.175 UC incresing the dev_w0 log drastically

    Hi all,
I performed a kernel upgrade on all systems in my landscape successfully to ver 700.175 Unicode for WIN2k3 & ORC DB 64bit.
I have observed the logs in work directory after upgrade
    dev_w0.old was only 19kb.
but with in a day after kernel upgrade dev_w0 log increased to more than  2 MB in  day & the following lines getting repeatedly in the log
    X Mon Nov 17 20:10:53 2008
    X  *** ERROR => EmActiveData: Invalid Context Handle -1 [emxx.c       2214]
    X  *** ERROR => EmActiveData: Invalid Context Handle -1 [emxx.c       2214]
    X  *** ERROR => EmActiveData: Invalid Context Handle -1 [emxx.c       2214]
try to analyze what could be the reason.Pls provide me possible clues.

    Hi All,
I have raised a message and got this response:
Research shows that one recommendation in this case is to ignore the
EmActiveData: Invalid Context Handle -1 errors as long as Symptom A
(The work process terminates with a signal in the routine FiRemove)
isn't an issue since it's not really an error. One developer suggested
112 - Trace and error information in the "dev_" files
if you wanted to limit the size of the trace files. The second that
came up was to update just the disp+work package to at least level 179.
since, disp+work package 190 was available, I applied it and now I see no error messages.
    Thanks again for the help.
Wish you a happy new year.

  • No prices in webcatalog of e-commerce 7.0 after SP upgrade to 700 SP6

    Hello,
we have upgraded our supportpackages to level 700 SP6 and the IPC is on level
    Build-ID: 700.20.3.201005270851.81674
Now we can't see prices in the catalog anymore. The prices in the basket and in the priceanalysis are correct.
As I am new to the whole CRM 7.0 enviroment I am not able to find the reason for this.
Does anybody has the latest IPC patch installed and has / had the same problem?
I am really appreciating all hints.
    Best regards,
    Nils

We had this same issues and were apparently the second customer to request the patch. What does seem extraordinary is that a release of E-Commerce was made publicly available which did not show any prices in the catalog. How could such a central piece be missed during pre-release testing?
We felt a bit disheartened once we found out that the E-Commerce web application was not kept in synch with the CRM in such an important area as pricing. Hopefully the release process has been improved as a result and this level of issues are caught before new versions are released.
    Cheers
