  • Upgrading Enterprise Manager from 10.2.0.5 to 11.1 (What are add-ons?)

    Hi There,
I am about to upgrade our Oracle Enterprise Manager OMS from 10.2.0.5 to 11.1. I'm trying to figure out which document to use. I have the SQL Server Plugin installed on our OMS and I'm wondering if this is concidered an add-on. If this is the case I should follow the document: Oracle enterprise manager grid control advanced installation and configuration guide and follow: upgrading enterprise manager grid control with add-ons? Correct?
    Thanks,

    Thanks,
JAs 12C is also launched , may be you can wait for some time and directly go for 12C. Because in 10.2.0.5 and 11.1 , we don't have much difference functionality wise.
Apart from Oracle Docs which you mentioned , you can also have a look at MOS note :

  • 10.1 to 10.2 upgrade: enterprise manager not working

    Hello,
We recently upgraded from Oracle 10.1 to 10.2: this meant installing 10.2 in a new home directory and upgrading the database instances from 10.1 to 10.2 through the database upgrade assistant. So right now, both 10.1 and 10.2 reside on the server but in seperate folders. Though all the database instances (we have 2-3 databases on same server) have been upgraded to 10.2, I am not sure if it is safe to uninstall 10.1 database server and so I have left it as such.
Initially it did not seem like a problem since enterprise manager opened fine for 10.2 DB instances and I could also connect to the database through my GIS client/program (its spatial data). Now, we are not sure what went wrong today but I am getting this error when i try to open the enterprise manager(web).
Can someone throw some light on what could be happening? There seem to be 2 listener services running in windows services - could this be a problem? (though I have stopped listener of 10.1 and it does not help); also could ports be an issue. The listener in 10.1 says it users 1521 and in 10.2, it says 1522 by default.
    Any advice would be helpful.

Details ORA-12505: TNS:listener does not currently know of SID given in connect descriptor (DBD ERROR: OCIServerAttach)

I would suggest you to do the folowing.
There isn't any harm in uninstalling 10.1, so go for it, stop all services running from this home (10.1). As you have upgraded your all DBs to now 10.2. softare is running your databases.
After un-installation, you will not see your listener as well, now create a new listener from 10.2 which will be running on the default port 1521 and then use sqlplus from client side to check whether listener is running fine or not.
Next step is to re configure your enterprise manager, use following procedure
    1. Open a terminal window and execute the following command to stop dbconsole:
    emctl stop dbconsole
    2. To recreate the Enterprise Manager repository, enter the following command:
    emca -repos recreate
Provide parameters for the repository re-creation. Enter at the appropriate prompt:
    Database SID: orcl
    Listener port number: 1521
Password for SYS user: oracle <the password does not appear >
Password for SYSMAN user: oracle <the password does not appear >
Do you wish to continue? [yes(Y)/no(N)]: y
Then wait. The re-creation of the Enterprise Manager repository may take about 15 minutes depending on your system setup.
    3. To deconfigure dbcontrol, enter the following command:
    emca -deconfig dbcontrol db
Enter the following values when prompted:
    Database SID: orcl
Do you wish to continue? [yes(Y)/no(N)]: y
The deconfiguration is generally faster than the repository re-creation. The actual time depends on your system setup.
    4. To reconfigure dbcontrol, enter the following command:
    emca -config dbcontrol db
Provide parameters for the reconfiguration. Enter the following values when prompted:
    Database SID: orcl
    Listener port number: 1521
Password for SYS user: oracle <the password does not appear >
Password for DBSNMP user: oracle <the password does not appear >
Password for SYSMAN user: oracle <the password does not appear >
Enter nothing for the next questions (just press the Enter key):
    Email address for notifications (optional):
Outgoing Mail (SMTP) server for notifications (optional):
Do you wish to continue? [yes(Y)/no(N)]: y
The actual time for the reconfiguration depends on your system setup.

  • 11g client enterprise manager console

enterprise manager did not install with installation of 11g client Administrator version. The documentation says that there is a standalone enterprise manager console with 11g client. Does anyone know how to install this console?

There is no longer any oem standalone console in 11g, this is a new feature in 11g. There is a java application named sql developer and the web enterprise manager console, that's it.

  • Enterprise Manager Newbie Q's

    Greetings All,
Oracle Database 11g Enterprise Edition Release 11.2.0.1.0 - 64bit Production
Windows 2008 R2Last night one of the production users received an ORA-01652: unable to extend temp segment by 128 in tablespace TEMP error.
Hence, my manager has requested that I
“Please configure our database servers to notify us via email when critical thresholds are exceeded.
This is a standard config option within enterprise manager”.I have very little experience/exposure with EM. In fact I’ve found several terms that I think all refer to the same thing (correct me if I’m wrong please), for example : "OEM Database Control", "OEM Grid Control", and something called "The Business Service Management (BSM)" capabilities of Oracle Enterprise Manager.
Are these different products/tools, or different implementations of the OEM?
We are not a RAC shop; Is the term GRID is also used to indicate a RAC environment?
I am looking for some good "How To Use/Configure OEM" sources of information. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
I’m looking a purchasing the following books, any recommendations on these or others?
Oracle Enterprise Manager 10g Grid Control Handbook (Oracle Press) - Werner De Gruyter
Oracle Enterprise Manager Grid Control 11g R1: Business Service Management - Ashwin Kumar Karkala, Govinda Raj Sambamurthy
It seems that there is a data repository for the OEM. Is this generally required? Can I set things up such that I can get e-mail notifications when tablespace(s) exceed a certain usage threshold without the repository?
I know I’ve rambled about some, thanks for your patients.
    Thanks for your time,
    Bob

I can answer a couple of your questions...
"OEM Database Control" is essentially "Oracle Enterprise Manager for a single database". "OEM Grid Control" (or, the current release, "OEM Cloud Control" is essentially "Oracle Enterprise Manager for several databases", plus the ability to monitor server hosts, web applications, and quite a few other non-database items. They are similar, but different products. Database Control generally gets installed along with the database software itself, while Grid/Cloud Control is a completely separate installation of a standalone product. I have no idea what the BSM bit refers to.
Database Control uses the one monitored database as its data repository (in the SYSMAN schema). Grid Control also requires a repository, but you are allowed to install a separate database, without additional licensing fees, to serve as the repository for Grid Control so long as you don't use it for anything else (other than as an RMAN recovery catalog). If you don't want to install another database to serve Grid/Cloud Control, you can use an existing database, but it's generally not recommended.
Neither Database Control nor Grid/Cloud Control will function without a repository. Either of them will allow you to set up alert notifications when tablespace(s) exceed your configured thresholds, or when various other events occur (DB shuts down, filesystem getting full, CPU load too high, too many sessions, whatever you like).
The term "Grid" is used in "Oracle Grid Infrastructure", which is part of the clustering package that supports RAC. "Grid" is just a marketing term there, RAC and Grid Control are orthogonal concepts, neither requires the other but they can also be used together.
I can't comment on the books.

  • ENterprise Manager 12c Upgrade Console appears to change permissions on '/'

This is a very strange occurrence and I am wondering if anyone else has encountered it. I have installed and upgraded my 11g OEM installation to OEM 12c Cloud Control. I am using the Enterprise Manager 12c Upgrade Console to deploy and configure the 12c agents. Twice now, because of different problems the deploy/configure step failed the first time. After resolving the issue and rerunning the deploy/configure step it failed because permissions on the '/' directory ahd been changed from root root to oracle dba. It leads me to believe that the deploy/configure process is making those changes (although I can't see why) and when it fails does not clean up after itself and that cleanup must be done manually.
Has anyone encountered this issue and if so, other than being aware of it is there a solution?
    Thank you.
    Bill Wagman

To update the thread, i had a webex session with Bill on Friday and he saw this permission change on two agents (11g) where he hadn’t run roots.sh and the agent upgrade failed with nmo error. After running the root.sh on 11g agent, retrying the agent upgarde job. Later the upgrade job failed ( doesn’t remember which step) can’t access the / as its owned by root and then figured out the / is owned by root.
Since this happened only on 2 agents and not with others , we are suspecting if / was owned by root before the upgrade operation itself. Bill will do some more agent upgrades to see if he gets the same issue and will also check if the / dir on that agent host was owned by dba before starting the upgrade?
I will wait to hear back from you Bill, you can drop me an email if you see the same behavior and then we can meet again.

  • Enterprise manager is upgradeing

    hi all,
i upgraded my database from 10.2.0.5.0 to 11.2.0.3.0 on windows platform. after that enterprise manager components status is invalid. actually i didn't configure enterprise manger for this database while creating database using dbca. don't know how it came into picture and status is invalid. how can i make this component is valid. please help to fix this.
is there any way to deinstall and reinstall this component only.
    thanks

This is database control, which is something I've never used.
It is however a common issue (half the time due the dbsnmp user account being locked), I suggest you search on metalink. I did a quick search and found a few notes that apply.

  • In-place upgrade of Enterprise Manager for RAC databases is not supported

upgrading 2 node RAC from 10.2.0.1 to 10.2.0.3 on Windows 2003 64 bit. I got the following:
In-place upgrade of Enterprise Manager for RAC databases is not supported in this release
Now I cannot log in to the database control as sys with sysdba role . I get "invalid username/password" error
I can login as a dba user
I also get a java error after I log in, some thing about class not found, but then I'm in and I can do everything that I try, although I haven't tried scheduling a backup yet
Can I upgrade EM to 10.2.0.3?
    If so, how?

    On the patchset readme...
11.3 Upgrade of Oracle Enterprise Manager Not Supported
When you start Oracle Database Upgrade Assistant to upgrade 10.2.0.1 database to 10.2.0.3 patch set, the following error occurs:
Inplace upgrade of Enterprise Manager is not supported for RAC databases is not supported in this release
    Workaround:
    Ignore warning.
If you drop and recreate the EM repository?
1). emca -deconfig dbcontrol db repos drop
2). emca -config dbcontrol db -repos create
Be careful, doing this put the database on QUIESCE mode.

Take a look at Metalink Doc ID 952302.1 "Is Microsoft Windows 7 certified to install/run Oracle Database Server/Client?" That document indicates that 10.2.0.5, scheduled to be released in the third quarter of 2010, will support Windows 2008 R2 and Windows 7 - apparently only the Oracle Client will be supported and not Oracle Database.
Oracle Database 11.2.0.1 will definitely work with Windows 7 (Professional, Ultimate, and Enterprise), Oracle Database 11.1.0.7 will probably work with Windows 7, Oracle Database 10.2.0.4 and below will not be certified on Windows 7 and very likely will not work properly. If you have Windows 7 Professional or higher, you might be able to run Oracle 10.2.0.4 in Microsoft's free Windows XP emulator:
    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/download.aspx
If you have Windows 7 Starter or Windows 7 Home Premium, it is possible to upgrade to either Windows 7 Professional or Windows 7 Ultimate using the Microsoft Windows Anytime Upgrade program that is built into Windows 7.

Depends on how big is your database.
For small database, doing a export and import is quick and dirty.
For larger database, I would suggest migrate the database. But this means a lot of work and test. This is what I would do if I am doing amigration:
    1. Do a cold backup of your 815 database
    2. On your new test box, try to install 815 and start your old database
    3. Upgrade your database to 8174
    4. Install 10gr2 on your new test box
    5. Migrate your 8174 database to 10gr2.
    6 Test a lot
    7. Repeat steps 1-6 2-3 times
    8. Document tthe process and your test results completely.
    9. Repeat what you document on your production box.

  • Enterprise Manager Console does not open in browser following patch 41

Last week I installed patch 41 on my Oracle 11.1.0.7.0 Database. The database resides on a Windows 2008 enterprise server (not R2). After the patch ran successfully, I have not been able to get into the GUI Enterprise Management Console to work since. It appears to make a connection to the logon screen and you can see urls/images loading in the browser, but the resulting browser screen for the logon is blank with "Oracle Enterprise Manager" on the title of the tab (non-descript object error in lower left corner). I get the same results with localhost or server name in the address bar.
This was working before the upgrade. I have already successfully recreated the repository and verified that the dbconsole is up and running. I have "googled" this to death and cannot find a solution. I know I can still do things through the command line but for a quick glance at the databases, the grid control is nice to have.
Any suggestions for fixes would be appreciated.
