Upgrading ESX 4.1 to 5.1 on C210 M2

I want to upgrade my host to ESXi 5.1 (from 4.1) but I have not found the upgrade on Cisco's site. Am I supposed to get the Cisco branded ESXi 5.1 iso from VMware? And is there a difference if my hosts are running my CUCM phone system?
My hosts are currently running ESXi 4.1.0, 433742. I should be able to jump to ESXi 5.1.0, 799733, right?

It's my understanding that the custom ISO is only required for certain B series servers to pickup additional drivers that are no included in the standard ESXi ISO (reference http://tools.cisco.com/squish/47385).  You can use the regular ISO and upgrade directly from 4.1 to 5.1 as documented by VMware
http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=2032757.
There's no difference in terms of upgrading based on what's running on the hosts other than if the VMs support the new ESXi version.

  • Upgrading ESX 4.1 to 5.1 with UC VMServers

I am trying to find some documentation, a guide, or any details on this and have come up short on cisco.com and docwiki.cisco.com I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction.
To simplify my question lets say we have a current ESX 4.1 environment with VM servers running the following apps: CUCM, CUPS, CUC, UCCX. (does it matter if they are running 8.5/8.6 or 9.1??)
If we were to upgrade from ESX 4.1 to 5.1 what is the impact to the Cisco servers? What are the procedures? Anything Cisco specific or a caveat that must be taken into consideration? And most importantly (cant find the answer to this anywhere) do we have to re-deploy the OVAs (from v7 to v8 to match) during/after the ESX upgrade?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you!

Thanks, I don't know how I missed that I was on that page multiple times today. It is kind of vague though.....and I might of just skimed over it since it says Other "Versions".........
I did follow that path and used the link to the following information: http://docwiki.cisco.com/wiki/Ongoing_Virtualization_Operations_and_Maintenance#Upgrading_ESXi
Upgrading ESXi Multiple versions of ESXi are supported by UC applications. To upgrade the ESXi software on a host, you must power off all  virtual machines or migrate the virtual machine to a different host. Instructions for installing or upgrading to a specific ESXi  release are available in the release notes of the ESXi version you  install. For example, here are the VMware ESX 4.1 Update 1 Release  Notes. After upgrading ESXi, or whever moving a virtual machine to a  different host that is running a different version of ESXi, VMware Tools  must be upgraded on the UC applications so that the tools versions  shows "Up to Date" in the vSphere Client (see VMware  Tools). It is OPTIONAL to upgrade the VMV (Virtual Machine Version)  version of the virtual machine to the newer VMV version. If you do  upgrade to the newer VMV version, note that your virtual machine cannot  be changed back to the previous VMV version, and that the new VMV  version will NOT run on your older version of ESXi. For example, if you  are running a vmv7 virtual machine on ESXi 4.1, and you upgrade to ESXi  5.0, you can optionally upgrade the vm to vmv8. Once you upgrade to  vmv8, your virtual machine can only run on ESXi 5.0 and later. Once  upgraded to vmv8, the virtual machine cannot be converted back to vmv7.  For further information see VMware documentation. Upgrading the UC applications When running UC virtualized, it is necessary that the virtual machine  configuration be set properly for the specific release of the UC  application that you are running. When doing a fresh install, it is required to deploy the OVA for  the application that matches the release of the UC application itself.  This ensures that the fresh install has the proper virtual machine  configuration for the release being installed. When a UC application is upgraded (eg. upgrading CUCM from 8.5.1  to 8.6.2), it is necessary to go to www.cisco.com and look at the Readme  file for the OVA of the release you are upgrading to. For example: go  to www.cisco.com and go to Support -> Downloads. From there Products  -> Voice and Unified Communications -> IP Telephony -> Call  Control -> Cisco Unified Communications Manager (CallManager) ->  Cisco Unified Communications Manager Version 8.6 -> Unified  Communications Manager Virtual Machine Templates-8.6(1) When you're at the appropriate OVA, select "Download Now" and you  will be taken to a page where you can click to view the Readme file. In  the Readme file, you will see the virtual machine settings for the  release. You must edit settings on the virtual machine you have upgraded  to match the setting in the Readme file. You will need to make the changes (edit settings) while the  virtual machine is powered off. After you are booted up on the new  software version, you must gracefully shut down the virtual machine,  change the settings, and boot it back up. There may be cases where there are no required changes. It will  depend on the specific "from" and "to" versions of the upgrade.
Still not very in-depth but looks like you "can" leave the old OVA and  stay on the vm version but as soon as you change it to next version or  upgrade you have to use the new ova and it won't roll back......still  not sure what the advantages are or any issues that may come about. I  mean if ESX5.1 can run an upgraded vmv with a vm7 template, why did they  even create a seprate vm8 template? Why is it optional? Guess that's one of those Cisco  mysteries.

  • Stop vm migration during upgrade procedure

    Hi
i'm using VUM to upgrade ESX 5.0 to 5.5 u2, during remediate process, it wanted to migrate a vm, but now it take about 12 hours to do this and i don't be able to cancel it. even i can't connect via VMRC(MKS Communication error)
    any idea?

    Hi Jay,
    I'd do the following:
    - free up one OVS by migrating all guests to the remaining OVS
    - upgrade OVM Manager straigh to 3.2.8
    - upgrade the idle OVS to 3.2.8
    - live migrate your guests from one 3.1.1 OVS to the new, idle 3.2.8 OVS - if not using OVMM, then using xm
    - round robin upgrade your remaining OVS
    I've done that a couple of times…
    Cheers,
    budy

  • Cisco Security Manager related queries

In one of our projects, we are running CSM 3.2 on VMWare ESX 3.5.There is a project in place to have the ESX upgraded to 4.1
This looks like a challenge as CSM 3.2 is not supported on ESX 4.1. Cisco TAC has suggested to upgrade CSM to 4.2
    Queries:
    1.       CSM 3.2 to 4.2, will it involve additional license cost?
    2.       If we upgrade CSM 3.2 to 4.2 and  then upgrade ESX from 3.5 to 4.1, will it be back immediately without anything required to be done on CSM end, once VMWare is  upgraded.
    3.       Is there any other preferred solution/workaround to manage the situation
    4.        If we have to move CSM from one ESX to another, what would be the steps  involved to retain the same configuration and logs.
    Regards,
    Nitin

To migrate from 3.2 to 4.2, you will need to acquire a 4.2 license. The part number depends on how many devices your 3.2 installation is licensed for. Please refer to Table 2 on this announcement. You Cisco reseller or partner can provide you a quote but if you search the Internet for that part number you can see typical costs.
The procedure for upgrade would be to first move to an interim step of CSM 4.0 and then to 4.2. Please refer to this guide. Also see the section on that guide on moving to a new server for how to handle your ESX upgrade / migration.

  • ESX. Real Instruments in GB disappeared after Lion Upgrade

    Hi:
After upgrading to Lion and Moutain Lion all of our 3rd party real instruments have disappeared in Garageband. They worked perfectly fine before the upgrade. I have tried re-installing, etc. And nothing. They are located in the appropriate folders in library/applications support/Garageband/iinstrument library, etc.
The still work in Logic, but have disappeared in Garageband.
    Any ideas?
    Quint
    http://www.drumsondemand.com

I did get them to show up by opening an old project file with a missing instrument in it and when I click on that track, boom, all of the missing instruments showed up. But I wonder what the command is to get GB to "rescan" for the real instruments.

  • How to UPDATE ESX Server 3i, 3.5.0, build 207095 using SSH or VSphere CLI remotely!

    Hello Guys,
Over the past few hours I have been posting related questions and I have gotten a little closer to updating my server/host.
I have gone to the ESX Server 3i updates (Embedded and Installer) and I have noticed that the first build for ESX 3i is 207095. Which means that I have not done any updates since the installation. CORRECT!
Now... I have been using "ESX Server 3 Patch Management guide, which instructs us to use esxupdate, but it appears that some of the command in that document is not supported on my host.
This post: vihostupdate35 | VMware vSphere Blog - VMware Blogs ..... Tells me that I will have to use "vihostupdate35" from a remote CLI which I installed but cannot see how to connect to the server as I cannot find any document that shows the syntax etc.
At this point I am confused and frustrated and just need a little more guidance from someone who could point me to a document or copy and past the procedures I need to use to get this update done.
I have downloaded this file to do the UPDATE: "ESXe350-201302401-O-SG.zip" and I have extracted it on the host on a Datastore and copied it to my "/Tmp/ESXi350" folder.
I have also extracted it there as well just in case I need to browse to the extracted folder, and run any command.
Can anyone out there help me with the correct SYNTAX and METHOD to get this update installed?
I can connect with SSH from a windows machine using puTTy.exe as well as I have VSphere CLI installed on another Windows PC and can browse to the "C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\VMware vSphere CLI\bin" folder to run "vihostupdate35.pl" I can see it in the folder with a "dir" command:

VMware KB: ESXi Server 3.5 June 2011 Rollup CD image
I missed an update and for that reason I have to do a clean install as stated at the link above.
My version cannot do any upgrade or update anymore!
*** What you need to know about the Secure Key Update ***
ESXi Server 3.5 June 2011 Rollup CD image (2000593)
This Installable CD contains ESX Secure Key Update ESXe350-201012401-I-BG.
For more information on this patch, see Critical Impact: VMware ESXi 3.5, Patch ESXe350-201012401-I-BG: Apply this patch to continue applying patches on ESXi 3.5 hosts after June 2011 (1030002).
NOTE: If you have not applied this patch by June 1, 2011, you will not be able to apply any patches from then on. To get your hosts updated with ESX Server 3i version 3.5 is to apply this Installable CD as fresh install. Alternatively, upgrade to ESXi 4.0 Update 1 Installable.
Thanks for your suggestions ... at least it led me to the answer.
    One clean install coming up!

  • VNICs (both uplinks and VM's vNIC) are blocked on N5K DVS after upgrading to ESXi 5.1

    Hello Gents,
I cought into weird situation after upgrade VMware ESXi 5.0 to 5.1 on UCS C200M2. Before upgrade I have had server with configured static adapter-fex VNICS and floating/dynamic vm-fex interfaces working perfectly in DirectPathIO mode for VMs. Initial deployment was done according Cisco N5K VM-fex operation guide for   NX-OS 5.1(3)N1(1). There were vCenter 5.1, 2xN5K and 2xC200M with ESXi 5.0 integrated so that N5K DVS was brought to vCenter and hosts could be added to DVS. One of C200M2 (still on ESXi5.0) has no problem while operating VM-Fexs and adapter-fexs while part of its uplinks are on VSS and othe part on DVS (in fact there are none VMs on VSS, so all the workloads use DVS).
But upgraded C200M cannot operate with DVS correctly: any vmks, vm networks, VMs connected to DVS lose network connectivity.
Attached picture illustrates diag of connectivity status (uplinks/ets are blocked).
    VEM are fresh and running:

Do anybody have an idea why it is going wrong?

Of course they exist. There is unpatched server with ESXi 5.0 near upgraded server and it works perfectly.
Finally I downgraded server to ESXi5.0 again and VM-FEX functionality restored.

  • After upgrading ACS 3.3.1 to 4.2 on windows the local database is not working

    Hi,
I have upgaded the ACS 3.3.1 for windows server to 4.2. Everything went fine but the local database is not working.
The CD is an upgrade kit from 3.x to 4.2 on windows. I tried to install directly the 4.2 I was able to install but integration with AD/LDAp is not working. Anysay its an upgrade kit so I cant expect it shoud work when install drectly the 4.2 but by upgrading from 3.3 to 4.2 everything should work fine.
I followed the upgradation path as recomended.
Also we have a requirment that once it is upgraded to 4.2 we need to shift the whole thing from the physical server to a virtual machine on VMware ESX server 3.5.
Can anybody pls guide me if anything else to do after the upgradation.
    Thanks & Regards
    Sachi

    Hi Javier,
First of all I was facing a problem of restoring the old database of 3.3 to 4.2. Somehow I overcame that issue by following the below steps. Now local authentication is working fine but AD/other External database authentication is not working. As you told the setting for the unknown users are configured to fetch the credentials from the external database if it is not in the local database.
Do we need to do anything in the AD itself?
    Regards
    Sachi
Steps for ACS upgrade to 4.2 version
Below are the requested steps mentioned for the up gradation from ACS 3.3.2 to ACS 4.2.
            1)     Take a configuration backup from existing ACS. ACS--->System
    configuration----> ACS Backup
    2)    now if you have  ACS 3.3.2 on server. take backup of the ACS
    3)   Insert the cd or if you have the set up on the system then  Run the setup of ACS 3.3.4. During the process it will prompt you to
upgrade existing configuration. Make sure you check that option else we will
loose the database. Now you need to hit next.next to finish the 3.3.4 upgrade.
    4)     Once you are at 3.3.4, take a backup and keep it handy.
    5)     Run the setup of 4.1.1. During this process it will prompt you to
upgrade existing configuration. Make sure you check that option else we will
loose the database. Now you need to hit next.next to finish the 4.1 upgrade.
6)Once you are at 4.1.1.24 take a backup and keep it handy.
    7)     Run the setup of 4.2. During this process it will prompt you to
upgrade existing configuration. Make sure you check that option else we will
loose the database. Now you need to hit next.next to finish the 4.2 upgrade.
    8)     Once you are at 4.2 take a backup and keep it handy. Now run the
patch 12 and take a backup again.
    9)     Now fresh install 4.2 on your new production server and install patch
    12. Restore the 4.2 patch 12 backup and you should be all set.

  • Do NOT Upgrade Past 10.6

I've recently purchased a surplus stock of brand new 2009 Xserve's and i have been experimenting on how i would integrate them into my existing business infrastructure and it really dissapointed me to see that Lion and Mountain Lion both do not support any of the extra hardware on this server. No ILO, no activiy lights, no management at all.
I can get past the more limited options available in the Server.app, but remvoing support for the actual hardware in the machine is appauling. I will not be upgrading from snow leopard server, i may even just install ESX 5.1 and run windows / linux servers as my new main servers...
I understand apple has become a consumer electronics company, but these consumers have jobs and thier devices get put into corporate networks daily. It would be nice to be able to better support those devices on the corprate network...
If anything the iphone / ipad should bring upon a higher need for os x servers...

Something is wrong. We are running 2009 machines and have full hardware support.
We are running 10.7 and 10.8 including all server lights and LOM.

  • [SOLVED] Upgrade from SLES10 SP3 & OES2 SP2 to SP4/SP3 breaks NCS

    Hi folks,
(This post was originally meant to be a rant and a request for help, but
while writing the final paragraph i found the solution. It's still a
rant, but i figured i'd post my solution here in case someone else runs
    into the same issue.)
I've just spent several hours banging my head against a broken cluster
node. My system is a 32-bit SLES 10 VM running on VMware ESX 3.5.x.
I upgraded from SLES10 SP3 and OES2 SP2 to the next service packs for
each (using the move-to-oes-sp3 script in yast2 online_update).
Everything went well for the first few update/reboot sequences, then
after the final reboot on SLES10 SP4 & OES2 SP3, cluster services would
not load or join the cluster on restart.
I checked dmesg and found errors about "Loading module compiled for
kernel version 2.6.16.60-0.54.5-vmi" into a previous kernel version, so
i tried downgrading to that kernel version, only to find that it was
older than the one i had just upgraded from (it's the original SLES10
SP3 kernel). So i tried upgrading back to the same kernel which is
running on the other cluster node (2.6.16.60-0.77.1-vmi), but that did
    not work any better.
    <preaching>
I have to say that i'm not impressed that OES2 SP3 isn't even compiled
against the appropriate kernel, and because of SUSE's kernel RPM
overwrite policy there's no way i can select to boot from a previous
kernel to see if that fixes things. Note to SUSE and other distro
builders: if you're not doing kernel package upgrades like Red Hat or
Ubuntu (so that we can select to boot from the previous kernel from the
boot menu), you're doing it *WRONG*.
    </preaching>
I then upgraded again to the latest recommended kernel for SLES10 SP4,
and still no joy. Dmesg shows this error before the rot starts:
allocation failed: out of vmalloc space - use vmalloc=<size> to increase
    size.
When searching for this error i stumbled across
    http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1613132
    which pointed me to
    http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Common_Pr...lloc_too_small
Adding vmalloc=192M to /boot/grub/menu.lst and rebooting solved the
    problem for me.

    Paul

The system in question has kernel-bigsmp and kernel-vmi installed. We
    only ever boot from kernel-vmi.

When we installed the system (on OES2 SP1, i believe) it was a while
ago, and kernel-vmi with clocksource=acpi_pm on the kernel command line
was the only solution we could find to get reliable time. If there are
updated best-practice documents, i'd be happy to hear about them.
However, this is a production cluster and my boss is (rightly) rather
    reticent to make major changes.
    Paul
the official Vmware paper on time is that IF you're using SLES 10.x 32-bit you will use VMI and NO kernel params (ie, get rid of the clockpit and clocksource=blah).
But if 64-bit then you're okay.
The easiest, IMO (especially with vmware) is to use the miggui (migration utility). That's how I'm converting all my 32-bit servers in vmware to 64-bit. Works quite well.

Questions: Could you pls help me on following issues?
    1. How to Convert OVM machines to VM Esx (.OVA or .OVF) Format
Answer: The only way I have done this is to import the the Oracle VM into VMware ESX with VMware P2V conversion. The one key thing you have to make sure of here is that if it is a Linux Virtual machine that you are moving to VMware you must start the Virtual Machine in a standard no Xen kernel before you do the P2V conversion as VMware will choke on the any Xen kernel.
Now if you want to go from VMware to OVM follow the instructions on this link: Re: Import VMWare VirtualMachine into OVM 3.2.2.520
    2. How to take backup or copy VM from Oracle VM for Converting other formats.
Answer: Read this white paper for Guidence on Oracle VM Backup's.
    http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/server-storage/vm/ovm3-backup-recovery-1997244.pdf
    3. Are we need to use the same version of Manager and Server? Manager Version= Server Version OR  Manager Version < Server Version OR Manager Version > Server version. I am using manager 3.2.2 and server 3.2.1 Is it OK?
Answer: I would strongly recommend that you keep the Manager and Servers on the same version.
I know for doing upgrades the Manager should be upgraded first and then the servers can be upgraded.  See section 5.1 in the upgrade document.  http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E35328_01/E35330/E35330.pdf
    Hope this helps. Russell

  • Order of upgrade

I have a large ucsm 2.0(3c) infrastructure utilizing VMware 5.0 auto deploy.
Need to upgrade to 2.2(1d) and VMware 5.5 u1 still using auto deploy.
Any thoughts/documents on order of upgrade? Some of the components I am using: 6248 fi's, vCenter, esx, srm, heartbeat, ibm svc sra, fnic & enic driver with cisco custom image for auto deploy, ibm svc fiber channel san, b200 m3 vic 1240, b440 m2 vic 1280.
I was thinking the order would go:
    ucsm fi firmware
    heartbeat
    vcenter
    auto deploy
    srm
blade firmware one at a time along with new VMware image at re-boot. New fnic & enic driver as well.
    Thanks

Regarding UCS, the following document gives you all the details
    http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/unified_computing/ucs/sw/upgrading/from2-0/to2-2/b_UpgradingCiscoUCSFrom2-0To2-2.html
Upgrading Cisco UCS from Release 2.0 to Release 2.2
Don't know the details; but if this is a operational environment, I would be very careful, do some tests first, and schedule a huge maintenance window.
UCS Update is the easiest step.
    Good luck
    Walter.

  • Is ESX v3.0 / 3.5 vulnerable to Shellshock?

    Greetings,
Is ESX v3.0 / 3.5 vulnerable to Shellshock? - I have searched all over and cannot find this answer. I tried finding out the linux shell version as well, but did not locate that. I thought Google would answer this in 2 minutes
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Rick

It should be as ESX 4 is vulnerable as well, with the difference being there is a patch available for ESX 4. I think the recommendation would be to upgrade to atleast ver 4 and apply the patch.

  • Vsphere health check report 5.1 vs ESX 5.5u1

    Hi,
The script has been working without issues for quite some time. I recently upgraded my hosts to ESX 5.5u1 and now the scheduled task is returning an error -->
    Can't load class 'HostSriovInfo' at C:/Program Files (x86)/VMware/VMware vSphereCLI/Perl/lib/VMware/VIMRuntime.pm line 52.
Any idea as to how to make it work again?
    Thanks

  • Cisco Prime and ESX 5.1

    Hi
we are upgrading LMS from 3.2 (windows) to LMS 4.2 and VMWare. But now i recogniced that it only runs with ESX 5.0.
We only have version 5.1 so does anyone have experience if its running with 5.1 ?
Is there any plan from cisco for an official version supporting ESX 5.1 ?
    Thanks
    Norbert

    Hello Norbert,
I've once installed LMS 4.2 on ESXi 5.0 and 5.1 for a test enviroment. Installation and running the application works, but the LMS Software is so slow, that when you click on a menuentrie you have to wait up do 45 second until anything happens.
As Sebastian said, PI 1.x works fine on ESXi 5.0 and 5.1. We're running several PI 1.3 Installations on ESXi 5.1. Installation and running the application works perfect. For installation I've used the .ova files which can be received at the Cisco Download area.
But if you ask me, if you want to install PI as a new installation you should switch to PI 2.0 which is or will be release in June, if I'm right.
If you need some installation help, feel free to contact me.
    Kind regards
    Kai
