Upgrading FCE 3.0 to 3.5

G'Day,
Have recently installed FCE 3.0 onto my imac, and have purchased the upgrade to 3.5. installed the upgrade disc's and when i start up FCE it still say's it is V3.0, have i installed it correctly or is there something im missing...Im just putting the disc in and clicking on the install icon, and letting it go.
Please help.

G'Day,
Na the only icons i get on the DVD is all the tutorial stuff, i get the FCE HD DVD Tutorial, Install quicktime 7, Magnet Media License agreement, and a movies folder. When i install the soundtrack DVD in the upgrade kit i get the Install Apple Loops for soundtrack icon, and when i install the live type media one DVD i get the install livetype media 1 icon.
Thats all when i installed V3.0 i got the screen as you showed above, but the upgrade kit to V3.5 never came with an install disc just a tutorial DVD and a soundtrack disc and two livetype discs.
Thats it....

  • Upgrading FCE 2 to FCE HD in mid-project--asking for trouble?

I'm in the middle of a couple of FCE projects using FCE 2.0.3, OS 10.3.9, and QuickTime 6.5.
To gain SoundTrack and LiveType (I have no desire to edit in HD), I want to upgrade to FCE HD, OS 10.4.9, and QuickTime 7.
My question is, after I do the upgrades, will I be able to open these FCE 2 projects into FCE HD, and continue to edit them as usual, just as though I had created them in FCE HD? Or will I have problems trying to convert FCE 2 projects into FCE 3.5 projects like that?

Well, I went ahead and upgraded everything, and I am now running 10.4.9, QT 7, and FCE HD (v. 3.5).
And nothing drastic has happened; in fact there have been no serious problems at all in editing old projects in the new version. Success!
What I discovered is that the upgrade is only an upgrade in the sense that you end up with a newer version of FCE, because the old version is still sitting right there in the Applications folder beside the new one, and can still be launched and run as before. So, after "upgrading," you can take your pick which version of FCE you want to run.
Apparently the FCE HD installer program detects the earlier version and extracts all the user information from it, since the registration box appeared with all the information already filled in, and the only serial number it asks for is the new one. But it does not preserve and carry over any user preferences, button bar additions, etc. As far as that goes, you are starting out brand new in FCE HD.
Now, when I open an old project into the new version of FCE, a dialogue box tells me that I can save the project as a new version with a new name, while leaving the old version alone, which is just what I have been doing, for backup safety.
However, the old FCE 2 projects seem to run just fine in FCE HD, with no glitches at all. I did receive one complaint from FCE HD, upon opening an FCE 2 project, that a certain clip "had different in and out points" than it was supposed to have, or some such thing, so I just deleted that clip and replaced it with a fresh copy and all has been well since.
So, I guess I can report to anyone else contemplating doing this that there are no serious problems or glitches to be encountered while upgrading FCE projects in mid-stream, so to speak. I have now been doing considerable editing on old projects in the new version of FCE with no problems whatsoever (knocking on my wooden head!).
And I really like LiveType and Soundtrack! The upgrade comes with a tutorial DVD that walks you through FCE HD, LiveType, and Soundtrack, and I have subsequently made my first animated titles and soundtracks, quite easily. Impressive! Gaining those two programs made the upgrades worth the trouble and expense.
My only gripe, a minor one, is that a lot of the Soundtrack loops seem geared to teen or twenty-something boys, since it contains so much trendy synthesized throbbing, and the "people" sound effects consist of a great deal of agonized screaming--just what I would have enjoyed at age 17, but not now, forty years later. I was hoping for a selection of more sedate and melodic-sounding loops. (The tutorial also employs a demonstration project showing athletic boys roller-skating across a vast mud flat at suicidal speeds, while holding large kites or sails for wind-propulsion. A fall or crash under those conditions would be spectacular, and I watched eagerly for one, but amazingly, not a single lad came a cropper--not in the chosen clips, anyway).
Now, can anyone tell me where I might acquire some more classical and mature music loops (symphonic, perhaps) for this wonderful program, Soundtrack?

  • Upgrade FCE from 2.0 to 3.5

When I try to upgrade my FCE 2.0 to 3.5, the installation does not allow me to upgrade the app. It will upgrade the "helper" apps but not the FCE.
Version 2.0 runs well, no problem. And I'm using an AGP card (ATI Radeon 9600 Pro) on a dual G5, with plenty of speed and memory, as the requirements on the box state.
What am I doing wrong? Is the graphics card not "strong enough?"
    Thanks.

Erased everything..started over with the Install of 3.5.
    Still no go.
The installer accepts my serial number but the FCE HDapp is greyed out with the "action" labelled as "skip." Can't seem to get around it.
Soundtrack and Livetype can be installed.
Could it be that my graphics card is not Quartz "extreme?"
    Merci...
    Hi(Bonjour)!
All you need from your previous version is the serial
    number.
It's a good idea to un-install the previous version
    before installing 3.5.
    see:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301182
The installer puts an entire new copy of FCE 3.5 on
    your HD.

  • Upgrading FCE 1 to 3.5 - on an Intel Mac

    Hi all!
After much searching I'm still unsure if this is really possible - so here goes:
If I were to "persuade" FCE 1 to run on my Intel MacBook, would I be able to successfully upgrade it to FCE 3.5 by buying the upgrade software from Apple? Then would it run as a native Intel application?
    Thanks!
    Alastair

    Hi(Bonjour)!
As FCE 3.5 update is available for any previous versions of FCE and as you'll get Soundtrack and Livetype in the package and as FCE 3.5 is universal binary (requiered for best performance on intel mac) it's worth every pennies of 99 bucks to go with 3.5 upgrade.

  • Upgrade FCE 3 to FCE 4 - need FCE 3 serial no.?

    Hi all
I'm intending to upgrade from Final Cut Express 3 to 4, but I've lost my FCE 3 serial number. Is it needed during the upgrade process?
Don't wanna buy FCE 4 and then realise I still need my FCE 3 number.
    Thanks!
    evon

You need the FCE3 serial number if you're buying an upgrade. You should contact Apple and see if there is any way to retrieve the serial number.

  • Recapturing footage while upgrading FCE 1.0 to FCE HD

Hello. I have about 20 hours of HD footage on mini DV tapes, using a Sony HC3 1080i camera. Off each tape, I have captured highlights in standard format on to my external drive using FCE 1.0. I now wonder if I should not go ahead and upgrade my computer to a 24inch iMac, and my FCE to FCE HD, prior to going through all the work of creating my movie. That would only make sense to me if I could import the FCE capture data in to the new computer and then recapture the movie segments from the tapes in HD. Are those last steps possible and reasonable? Will it be tedious? Would the minimum specs on an iMac24 be OK for somewhat efficient editing? Thanks!
    Jerry

Right, I did down convert to SD. I hoped to be able to easily recapture the footage in HD after upgrading, without having to start from scratch in terms of editing. I have not created a movie yet, just have selected the highlights from all the source tapes which are in HD. Does that make any sense?

  • Upgrade FCE to FCP Apple Prores etc

    Hi,
I just purchased my first mac a few weeks ago. I was deciding between purchasing FCE and FCP, and ended up buying FCE. None of the specs I read mentioned the 1440x1080 resolution limit on importing AVCHD, nor did I read anywhere that the import codec was limited to a heavily compressed AIC codec rather than ProRes.
I've only had FCE since July 1. Now that I realize that issue, I want to upgrade to FCP, but called an apple store in the area and they said there is no upgrade path from FCE 4 to FC Studio. Is there any way I can do this? I really like the software, but these limitations were not mentioned. It said AVCHD support and when I read about that further, there was no mention of the bad compression and resolution limits. The footage looks about as good as 720x480 DV.
Is there any way that I could upgrade my FCE 4 to FC Studio and make use of the ProRes codec and I hope full 1920x1080 resolution?
    Thanks in advance!
    Adnan Hussain

    Adnan,
I am very interested in your post as a new user of FCE and a AVCHD camera user for awhile now. Can you tell us what your camera records in? Is is 1920 x 1080 i60, something else? Also what is the output you wish to use...SD DVD, Blu-ray DVD, Apple TV or internet.
My experience has been that with AVCHD, and most other formats I suspect, some loss of quality is to be expected during the editing process. Comparing clips from the camera to clips that have been imported to editing software and then exported to some other format is not an apple to apples comparison. ( no pun intended ). How the clips are imported and in particular how they are exported have a huge impact on the final result. The Pro res codec in FCP may offer some higher quality output, but at a much higher price and depending on what you want to view this on......it may not matter. So bottom line, as Ian has responded, in your case switching to FCP may not help.
One final question is how have you tried to export the movie, what was the work flow you used? There might be some settings that you can change to get closer to the results you desire.

  • Upgraded my Mac and now I HAVE to upgrade FCE??

I upgraded my mac from an eMac to an Intel iMac last week and now I am trying to get my FInal Cut Express HD onto it. It says it needs an AGP graphics card, but when I updated the program so it would not need the AGP graphics installer, I got a pop up that said that i didn't need the installer. I have already payed to upgrade to HD, but now, am I, one year later, going to have to buy another $100 program? I think it should be compatible wilth all Macs, don't you?

It will work just fine after you "esc" away the warning. There is also an easy edit you can do to a preference file so you don't see the error at all but you'll have to search for it (I don't remember what it was).
I worked this way for a while on my intel mac and FCE 3. However, I was used to FCE on a dual G5 tower, so, I didn't like the speed penalty.
The speed benefit of upgrading to the universal version of FCE 3.5 is worth it, IMHO. However, if you were used to FCE on an eMac (G4) then your Intel Mac will still run non-native intel software at a good clip for you, probably a bit faster even.

  • Upgraded FCE to FCE HD...files won't import!

    Hi, all!
I have been editing a project 960x720 on an FCP HD system, but now I need to complete the work on my home system. 1.25g, 1G Ram, OS X 10.3.9
I had FCE, just loaded FCE HD, installed fine, lets me import all my non HD files and clips fine, but will not display HD clips. Timeline opened fine, audio plays fine, but no video!
If this helps, I cannot play the clips through quicktime either. System keeps telling me I am missing one or more components, but doesn't specify which.
    Any thoughts?

You probably have QuickTime 6.x on your eMac but QT 7.x on your other system where you started your project. You can't go backwards. And I would strongly recommend AGAINST putting QT7 on a Panther (10.3.x) system.

  • Trying to upgrade FCE license...it won't let me

Hi: I recently bought a new MacBook Pro and installed my academic version of FCE...it shut down all my versions of FCE on my old laptop and my desktop, I guess because I had too many versions running with the same serial # (I teach part time at the Maine Media Workshop).
So I bought a commercial version of FCE and loaded it on the new laptop, but it keeps coming up as the academic version with the same old serial number.
I guess I have not totally uninstalled the old software, but I can't find any instructions anywhere about uninstalling and re-installing FCE. Can anybody help?
    Thanks, Bob

Hard Drive/Library/Application Support/ProApps. Delete the Final Cut Express System ID. This will force it to ask for the serial number.

  • Upgraded to Tiger...FCE no longer works

Is there something that I need to do if I upgrade to Tiger from Panther, in terms of getting Final Cut Express to work? Is there, for exampe, a new upgraded version of FCE that I need to download for it to work on Tiger? I know that sometimes when you upgrade one thing, you need to upgrade everything! Or maybe it's something totally simple...and I'm being an idiot...(wouldn't be the first time). All I know is that it no longer seems to recognise my camcorder and so all of a sudden I have lost the ability to import camcorder footage onto FCE like I used to....maybe the settings got lost somehow?...do I need to re-install FCE...or do something in Preferences etc for it to re- recognise the camera it used to recognise but now no longer does? Help ! Please !

Thanks for responding so quickly...wow...thought i would just log on tomorrow and see if there was a reply! The Panther version was 10.3.9 I believe...now I'm on 10.4.8.....and i put in a disc for Tiger, and then via software upgrade went to the latest 10.4.8 version...and most of the apps I had still are with me, so i didn't do a complete wipe-clean from Panther to Tiger, it was an upgrade. Still can bring FCE up and watch the half-finished project I had in there from before the upgrade to Tiger..just can't capture any new footage...sounds like perhaps I lost the settings to recognise the camcorder? (it's a Sony DCR-PC1000E)...
As for what version of FCE...it's old...2.0.2....so probably long overdue for an upgrade...Anyway, upgrading FCE to the latest version or even going to FC Pro is a different story I think (and I would certainly entertain recommendations to do so & reasons for why it would make sense) but for now I just want to be able to capture camcorder footage like I used to. Thanks.

  • I quite by accident ended up with FCE 2, FCE 3.5 Upgrade and FCE 4 Upgrade

To install on my 2004 G5 Power Mac 2.5 Dual.
The FCE 2 came with my computer when I bought it new in late 2004, the others I bought recently.
From what I'm hearing here it appears that the difference between my upgrades and the full version of FCE 4 are; Sound, I think my will retain with the Upgrades. And something else that forgot, I get with the 3.5 Upgrade and then the 4 Upgrade after that, rather than skipping the 3.5 Upgrade.
I ran out of money so I couldn't get FCS 2 that I wanted and I am trying to get the best FCExpress that I can and the most compatible trouble free that I can for my old system.
I am shooting with A New Canon HV20 and I have already upgraded to Leopard 10.5.2 and Quicktime Pro and iLife 08
Should I skip the 3.5 Upgrade and just Upgrade to the 4 or should I Upgrade to 3.5 and then Upgrade to 4, Thank You.

It's definitely a bad idea to have two different versions of Final Cut on the same computer, so the only way you'd be able to do a "dual upgrade" is to fully install FCE3.5 w/ Soundtrack and LiveType, and upon installing FCE4, choose only to install/upgrade FCE itself. If that's possible. If not, you may be able to accomplish the same thing by digging through the installer's package contents on the install DVD.

  • How does FCE upgrade work for new machines

I currently have a iMac G4 that I use FCE 2 on. I want to upgrade to FCE 3.5 HD which I see no problem with doing. I am also thinking about upgrading my hardware to a new Intel based iMac someday. Will I be able to use the upgrade FCE 3.5 software and the serial numbers from my FCE 2 to install on the newer hardware?
I guess I don't see why not but thought I whould ask before making the purchase.
    Thanks
    iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Yes to all of that.

  • Does upgrade to Tiger affect FCE?

A number of things require OSX 10.4 that I may have to upgrade from 10.3.9.
But I have a pretty good video production system working, using FCE along with iMovie, iPhoto, and iTunes-Garage Band.
Any FCE-related horror stories making the upgrade to Tiger? Using FCE 2.0.3.
    Thanks,
    TD

No horror stories, but if you upgrade to Tiger, I'd strongly suggest the following:
    - Backup everything you need to keep, reformat your HD and install Tiger from scratch
.... I know that means you'll have to reinstall other apps too, but it will give you a good clean start
    - Download the combo updater and Update Tiger at least to 10.4.2 but don't even think of updating to 10.4.9
    - Upgrade FCE to version 3.5 and then Update to 3.5.1
    - Install QT 7.1.5
If you have iLife v5 that will be fine on Tiger, you don't necessarily have to upgrade to iLife v6

  • Upgrade from Final Cut Express to Pro 5.0

I think I made a stupid mistake. I purchased Final Cut Pro 5.0 upgrade thinking I could upgrade from Final Cut Express. But when I am asked to enter the previous versions serial number, it does not accept it. Is there any way to do this or am I going to have to buy the full version of Final Cut Pro?
Also, I have a G4 Powerbook with the following specs. Is it going to run the program if I do finally get it installed?
    CPU Speed: 867 MHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 256 KB
    Memory: 640 MB
    Bus Speed: 133 MHz
    NVIDIA GeForce4 MX

To upgrade from FCE you need the Final Cut Pro 5 Upgrade from Final Cut Express. I just upgraded FCE and that worked fine for me.
Hope this helps answer your question...
