Upgrading Flex Builder 3 Standard to Flash Builder 4 Premium

Hi there,
Purchased Flex Builder 3 Standard back in January. Came to enjoy (and depend on) the memory profiling functions in the beta 2.
Anyhow, Flash Builder 4 has been released, and I see there is no memory profiler in the Standard edition. I see some conflicting information out there regarding upgrades -- some (third party) websites say it's possible to upgrade Flex Builder 3 Standard to Flash Builder 4 Premium. Adobe's website says it's only possible to upgrade Standard -> Standard, and Premium -> Premium.
The costs to upgrade to Premium from Standard would be prohibitive; I'd have to purchase two separate upgrades and the price would go over $US1000. Am I able to upgrade to Premium using my Flex Builder 3 Standard purchase?
Thanks.

Hi,
I don't think that "downgrades" from FB3 Pro to FB4 Standard are officially supported. You might be able to negotiate with a Sales Rep to make an exception for you though, for a discounted price on a non-upgrade version of FB4 Standard.
Alternatively, if you have any interest in CS5 Web Premium (or have any Adobe products qualifying for a CS5 upgrade), FB4 Standard is included with that Suite now.

  • Importing Flex 2 projects in Flash Builder 4.5

I have a decent amount of Flash/ActionScript experience, but I'm brand new to both Flex and Flash Builder... so apologies for asking a potentially stupid question.
I just received a Flex project from a client, and I assumed I'd be able to work on it with my recent install of Flash Builder 4.5
But when I go to File > Import Flash Builder Project and navigate to the Project folder, I just get a warning that says:
“The folder does not contain a valid Flash Builder Project.”
I think this project might have originally been developed in Flex 2. Am I doing something wrong, or is it normal to not be able to import older Flex projects into Flash Builder? If Flash Builder can't import old Flex projects, what's the recommended workaround?

dont import it, do it from scratch in fb4

  • Flex Builder 3 vs Flash Builder 4

Is there much difference between Flex Builder 3 and Flash Builder 4? Just that I got them both through the student online form but since FB4 is newer, should I still keep Flex in my laptop?

I found FB3 rock solid and I loved only having one name space.
FB4 is quirky to say the least.
Only reason I don't switch back to FB3 is because FB4 changed the way states are done, and that alone has saved countless hours.  I love the way STATES are being handled in FB4!
CrazyMerlin, you got a url for the FB4 skin site.  wow that sounded x-rated...

  • App fails to compile with mxmlc command-line but builds fine with flash builder IDE.

    Hi,
i have this flex app (its a flex project created from flash builder ), it compiles fine when i build it from IDE.
it fails to compile when i do it from command line through mxmlc.
i am invoking the mxmlc at the location <flash-builder-installation>\sdks\<flex-ver>\bin\
    the mxml file is test.mxml
i am invoking like the following
    c:\<bin>\mxmlc test.mxml
i dont have any dependency on any of custom swc file.
i am getting the following type errors when i compile it from my .as file
Error: Type was not found or was not a compile-time constant: TouchEvent
Error: Type was not found or was not a compile-time constant: File.
Error: Type was not found or was not a compile-time constant: FileStream
could you please let me know what i am missing here ?
    thanks,

Is this a AIR app or a mobile app? If you are building AIR app for desktop then you can use amxmlc instead of mxmlc.
If its a mobile app then use mxmlc +configname=airmobile

  • Migration from Flex 3.3 to Flash Builder 4 problems.

So, I've been working on a Flex Builder 3.3 project for some time now. One of the things I had expected from Flash Builder 4 would be the ability to simply import a fully operational (bug free) 3.3 project. Wrong.
My 3.3 project uses an imported FLVPlayback component (for a number of reasons) and under 3.3 I got no errors using it. Immediately upon importing and opening my 3.3 project in 4.0 I get the following: (any assistance whatsoever would be appreciate to resolve this)

  • Issues migrating from Flex Builder 3 to Flash Builder 4.5

Migrating from Flex Builder 3 (SDK 3.5) to Flash Builder 4.5 (SDK 4.5). Using Flex 3 compatibility mode. Flash Player 10.2. MX only components set.
Issue 1. A DataGridColumn error per:  Description Resource Path Location Type
Declaration of style 'direction' conflicts with previous declaration in C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Flash Builder 4.5\sdks\4.5.0\frameworks\libs\mx\mx.swc(mx.controls.dataGridClasses:DataGridColumn). SPT_GUI  Unknown Flex Problem
Issue 2. Using Cairngorm 2. Have a class 'Bindable] public class GuiModel implements ModelLocator'. Now getInstance() is not defined per: private var model : GuiModel = GuiModel .getInstance(). Does Cairngorm 3 have to be used with Flash Builder 4.5?
What has to be done to resolve these issues?

Issue 2: Have you defined the static variable to hold the instance of the model locator? Also, have you defined a static method to return the model locator's instance?

  • How to migrate a flex app from Flex Builder 3 to Flash Builder 4.7

    Hello,
I have written an extensive application using Flex Builder 3. I have maintained the app for several years using FB3. In the mean time I have created several mobile apps using Flash Builder 4.7. So I am very familiar with the the new framework. However, my client has requested some big changes to the app. I figured this would be a great opportunity to migrate the app to FB4.7. I would like to keep the mx structure for the time being. So, are there any good documents concerning this migration path? What SDK should I use. Should I start using the Apache Flex SDK?
    Thanks,
    --randu

    Hello Raja,
Thanks. Your reply has been very helpful.
For deploying the Flex app, as a web on NW 04S, I did the following:
    - Created a web project and included the following files as web-content. These files were created using the Flex builder or in the Flex development perspective of NWDI - CE, you can find them in the "bin" folder of your Flex project.
       - AC_OETags.js
       - your-app.html
       - your-app.swf
       - history.htm
       - history.js
       - history.swf
       - playerProductInstall.swf
       - crossdomain.xml - This file is important, if our Flex app wants data from the server.
( I made the simplest possible crossdomain.xml containing
           <allow-access-from domain="*" secure = "false"/>
      -  Declare "your-app.htm" as the welcome file in web.xml
      -  Package, this .war after building this web project in an Enterprise application project and build it.
Now, you have the .ear made, which is deployable on your NW Web AS.
Apart from this, another thing which is important to be included in your Flex mxml code is the following:
( Thanks to Abesh for this........ )
    - You have to tell the Flex app, in the action script, as to from where should the Flash engine pick the crossdomain.xml ( in case you are accessing the server for data from your app)
You might have noticed, we packaged the crossdomain.xml along with our other web content in the .war.
So mention, something like this in your action script.
    Security.loadPolicyFile("http://<hostname>:<http-port>/<context-root fo your web app>/crossdomain.xml");
The code will work like a charm.
    Hope this helps everyone.
    Thanks guys.
    Best Regards, Gagan.

  • Can you run Flex Builder 3 and Flash Builder 4 side by side?

I have what I hope is a relatively simple question. The company I work at currently has several Flex 3 projects nearing completion or in the latter part of their development phase, but we use SVN version control. It's my understanding that while you can use Flash Builder 4 to create and/or edit and publish Flex 3 projects, once you use FB4 on a version controlled project, anyone who checks that project out from SVN will need to use FB4 to edit the project. Assuming that is correct, can we have both FB3 and FB4 installed on our workstations, and switch between them depending on the projects we use? We're hoping to migrate our developers over to FB4 as they wrap up development on Flex 3 projects, but we may need developers working on Flex 4 projects to assist on the final stages of our Flex 3 apps. Just to clarify: we do not need both the FB3 and FB4 executables running at the same time, just the ability to close FB4 and launch FB3 and vice-versa without having error or compile issues. We use the standalone FB installs, not the Eclipse plug-ins, btw.

Yes - to my knowledge, you can have FB3 and FB4 installed on the same machine without conflicts.
Each version uses a separate default workspace, so provided that you don't try to share workspaces between the two versions, you should be safe.

  • Où peut-on trouver une documentation comme celle de Flex 3.0 pour flash builder 4.7?

Je suis à la recherche d'un site qui propose une documentation similaire à celle qu'on pouvait trouver à l'adresse
    http://livedocs.adobe.com/flex/3/html/help.html?content=layouts_06.html

The Status Bar is no longer present in Firefox 4.0 b7 and replaced by the Add-ons Bar that extensions can use.
You can use the Status-4-Evar extension to replace some functionality.
    * Status-4-Evar: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/235283/
Open the "Affichage > Barres d'outils > Personnaliser" window after you have installed the Status-4-Evar extension and drag the items (Status Text, Progress Meter, Download Status) upon the Add-ons Bar (Affichage > Barres d'outils > [X] Barre des modules)

  • Flash Professional as3, Flash Builder as3 or Flash Builder mxml?

So there is no doubt that Flash Builder with mxml is amazing. I Built my app in 2 months and it is amazing. The problem is that my app is way too slow and it not only freezes but freezes the whole phone and you have to take out the battery.
Now I built a test app with Flash Professional, that of course isn't yet as complicated as the Flash Builder app, which performs at the same speed as native apps. It never crashes and is just amazing.
I am wondering which direction to go. Which IDE to choose? Flash Pro or Flash Builder?
I agree Flash Builder is better in every way during the development process, but in the end... does all that matter? does it not all come down to how well the app performs for the end user?
From my website development experience I noticed that Flex websites are slow and crash web browsers. On the other hand Flash Professional apps never crash the web browser and run perfectly smooth.
I have only found two quality adobe air apps on the market and I 99% gaurantee they were both developed with Flash Professional.
Does anyone have an example of an app they know was developed with Flash Builder using mxml and which runs smooth and never crashes?

Speaking as a developer who has built and worked on a number of large-scale apps for long-term clients; you would need to shoot me and prise the Flex framework from my cold, dead hands before I would give it all up in favour of the huge limitations of a pure AS implementation.
Yes, it is possible to build bad, slow, heavy Flex AIR apps. Yes, it is possible to build faster, slicker, lighter pure AS apps.
    But...
Once an app is out there, you need to maintain it.
    And...
If you build the thing properly in the first place, performance will be comparable or better using the well-defined systems and frameworks of Flex / AIR.
    Or rather...
There are things that it is better to build your own controls for than to use Flex's ones, but those things are so few and far between, and so obvious after just a little bit of performance testing, that it is almost always going to be preferable to build using Flex default and then to replace the problem items _and_only_ the problem items with home-cooked controls that _are_integrated_ with the existing Flex framework.

  • How to search in Flex SDK files in Flash Builder

    Hi there
I want to search Flex sdk files out from flashbuilder - like I can do with the menu search->search dialog. Is there a way to do so? I am interested in it because sometimes I do not only want to hit F3 to go to a source file - I would like to serach the SDK.
