Upgrading for free

I have my original Mac Mini (late 2009) that still has iLife '09. I have upgraded to Mavericks but I am still required to pay for the update to iPhoto and iMovie in the App Store.
I thought all of the iLife products became free after the announcement on Tuesday.
Do I need to do something in order to receive the updates for free?

Have a read of this:
http://www.macworld.com/article/2056159/what-you-need-to-know-about-apples-free- apps-policy.html
note this:
If you don’t own iLife '11 or iWork ’09 apps (or v1 iOS apps), or own older Mac versions: On the iLife side, you’ll have to buy iMovie and iPhoto at full price ($15 or $5, depending on platform). GarageBand is free for everyone to download, though the app does offer in-app purchases. Apple’s iWork apps are each $20 for the Mac, $10 on the iPhone or iPad.

i bought the macbook pro few months ago can i get the lion upgrade for free as a part of my software support?

They announced it; sorry, no free Lion:
"The Mac OS X Lion Up-To-Date upgrade is available at no additional charge via the Mac App Store to all customers who purchased a qualifying new Mac system from Apple or an Apple Authorized Reseller on or after June 6, 2011. Users must request their Up-To-Date upgrade within 30 days of purchase of their Mac computer. Customers who purchase a qualifying Mac between June 6, 2011 and the date when Lion is available in the Mac App Store will have 30 days from Lion’s official release date to make a request."

  • Mountain lion upgrade for free.

I can't wait to upgrade my iMac, I almost purchased the latest operating system, but after reading reviews learned that if you'd purchased your system since July of '11 it's free? Is this correct. I bought my 2010 model in Sept of 2011 and already recieved the Lion but I am really anticipating the many new changes. I just don't know how to get the latest upgrade for free! Do I need to get ahold of support during business hours? thanks, p

Well shoot... it appears like my Mac may not qualify for AIR PLAY.. why the heck NOT. isn't that one of the big reasons I bought both the apple tv device and the mac? and the iphone and the ipad?? well that would be TWO ipads and like 4 iphones.. plenty sad that the airplay may not work like I'd anticipated.. It won't prevent me from getting the update,  but if not for the reviewers at the app store showing plenty of disappointment.. (anger even).. I'd have missed this little on info too. :-(

  • How do I skip upgrading itunes? I used to have an option, now I can't get past the upgrade for free screen!

I have been trying to access the itunes store for a week now but can not get past the screen to upgrade for free.  I do not want to upgrade, I tried but can not install the free upgrade because I am using 10.2.2.  I do not want to upgrade I just want to get to the itunes store... how do I get past this screen?  There used to be an option to skip the upgrade.

I have an iMac G5 with a pre-Intel processor.  My current OS is 10.4.1.  When I open my iTunes store function, I get an upgrade to iTunes 10.5 page that does not allow me the opportunity to refuse the recommended upgrade and I don't want it because my processor is not the Intel processor.  I can't get past this page to access the iTunes store.  I can't find iTunes 9.2.1 online to download, if that is the only solution.  I can't believe Apple is forcing me to purchase a new iMac in order to continue using iTunes on my current iMac.  I'd like a good answer and solution to this problem.

  • If I buy LR5 and LR6 comes out, can I upgrade for free?

I need to upgrade from LR4 to accommodate my new camera. I hear LR6 is coming. If I buy LR5 and LR6 comes out within x amount of time, can I upgrade for free from LR5 to LR6 for free? I heard this somewhere and want to be sure.

The answer is that Adobe normally gives free upgrades if you buy the earlier version within 30 days of the release of the new version. But since no one knows when the new version will be released, you basically have to guess.

  • How to UPGRADE for FREE from Snow Leopard yo Lion

Bought a new iMac on 18/11/2011.
    Came with Operating System 10.6.8
Have now found out that I should have had the Lion OS installed by updating for free.
Have tried for days now but no luck, I still have to pay for upgrading.
Does anybody out there have the same problem and could tell me where to go ??
    Thanks a lot.

    EDIT:
rkaufmann87 has the up-to-date info. My posting below is how it USED to work.
Only AppleCare (Call the 800 number) can fix this for you.
Any Mac sold by Apple (after about July I think) should have come with an Option for Lion, but they have to set it up for you.

  • Can I upgrade for free, as i bought my macbook 10days ago?

  • Logic Pro 7 Upgrade for Free

How do I qualify to get the upgrade for Logic Studio?
I heard from someone that worked at Guitar Center that I can get it for free if I bought it within a month of Logic Studio coming out.
Where would I get the rebate from Apple?

Are you saying that you bought a full new version of Logic 7 less than a month before Logic 8 came out? In that case, Apple was allowing people to return their opened copies of Logic 7 in order to purchase Logic 8. Under normal circumstances you are not allowed to return software when it's been opened but they were making an exception for people who bought 7 right before 8 came out.
However, it's been several months now and I doubt they're going to honor that. You need to call Applecare and ask them that question, or call an Apple Store. But more than likely they're going to tell you you waited too long and have to buy the upgrade package to go from 7 to 8.

  • Have iWork 09 DVD. Cannot upgrade for free to new versions

App Store does not acknowledge that I have the DVD version of iWork. It doesn't even have any serial numbers printed on the DVD or in the sleeve. Is there a way to "tell" the app store app that I have this Apple software? I thought that iWork '09 customers get iWork '13 for free? Apple support wants $19 to answer this question :-( The system recognized other software that were also originally in DVD form (Aperture, iLife '11). Whats with iWork?

I'm using Mac OSX Mavericks in German language - in one of the forums there was a quick solution to my problem: if you change language setting in Mac OSX to English (primary language), then reboot, and then running software update will show you all the updates to your iLife and iWork apps - for free. Nice workaround for those who can't wait.

  • Kin being able to be upgraded for free?

I recently received a letter from Verizon stating that Kin users are able to trade in their Kin for any 3g smart phone for FREE.  I have the letter as proof but when I call Verizon stores asking them about this kin ordeal, that have no idea what I am talking.  Does anyone here know any other information about this?  Or is Verizon just making Kin users feel more pathetic  by playing a joke.

Yes, I got the same letter yesterday. Let me tell you MY story.
So in the letter it states that the offer is only redeemable at an actual STORE. So today I went to my local store and was told that THEY could not honor the offer because they are an "independant" store, and that I had to go to an actual "corporate" store. My nearest corporate store is TWO HOURS drive away from where I live. Oh, joy!!
So the poor sales guy there said to call customer service to see what might be done, but that there really wasn't any way that his store could help me because they would not get refunded by corporate for the cost of the "free" new phone, that it would be a loss of money for them, and I completely understand that.
So I called customer service who had no idea what was going on, and they put me on hold for at least 20 minutes. I imagined the customer service gal running around the office looking for some memo or frantically searching inter-company emails. By the time she got back on she said that she was going to have to forward me on to online sales to see what they could do. On hold for another 10 minutes. The woman at online sales said that they ALSO had no idea what was going on and that she was sending her manager (who was not in the office "yet") an email and that they would call me back. Well, that was around 1pm Central Time. I've not heard back from them.
Tomorrow I'm going to contact the corporate store and see what they can do so I don't have to drive 2 hours and waste a half a tank of gas. Basically, they've offered us appropriate customer service, but I'm getting the feeling that the letter was sent out by whatever department the KIN was handled by without actually notifying ANY other department, or without ANY memos being sent out to the stores (or customer service, for crying out loud!).
I'm also very concerned about my data plan. I pay $100 a month and cannot afford to have my data plan tampered with. I had the plan set up specially for almost no talk & text because I have a cell phone through my company that eliminates the need for that stuff on a personal phone, which I basically use as a mini-computer. I'm really put out by the fact that I most likely WILL have to make the two hour drive to ensure that they don't eff up my data plan, as it was like pulling teeth to get it set up in the first place.
Gee, it sure would be nice if a Verizon employee could throw in a littler bit more information for us here on this thread!!
