Upgrading from 10.2.8 to 10.4.6. Need some advice before I begin.

I'm running a workgroup server, that handles an in-house web page, retrospect backup services, file sharing, and mail list handling through sendmail.
The Hardware: Dual 1.4 GhZ G4, Mirrored drive doors. 1.5 gigs of installed RAM. Presently running Mac OS X server, v10.2.8. I already have the latest version of Retrospect, v6.1.126. This has been running for several months now, with no problem.
I've been requested and required to upgrade this operating system to OS X server, version 10.4.6. I already have the duly licensed copy of the OS, and I've downloaded the OS X server combo updater for 10.4.6. (Yes, I know 10.4.7 is posted. )
My question: what "gotchas" should I be aware of before I begin? It looks as though user account info, file sharing, and the small web page will stay just fine, but I have concerns about sendmail. This needs to work with a minimal amount of grief. Sendmail on this system handles several mailing lists of considerable size, and it would rather painful to have to rebuild the entire thing. I don't think switching this duty to another application is an option.

I did that a few month's ago now, and for the most part it wasn't a problem. I lost a little of the stored e-mails because of not backing up the drives properly but that was okay, they were just archives anyway.
As far as using sendmail, I don't know, as I went from Apple's MTA to Postfix with Mailman, which works wonderfully. But I would think if you just make sure to backup your sendmail config files and then copied them into the appropriate places on the new server you should be set... But again, I don't know how sendmail works

It is just conceivable you burned a CD that exactly matched one already in the Gracenote database. Gracenote uses track count and duration to decide what CD it is you have in a computer. If you have one that matches that it will label it. You could conceivably even have one that matches it that is not the correct one.

Erase and install Lion from the USB Flash Drive version that's available on the online store.
Use the Migration Assistant to import the data, if you are certain everything is compatible with Lion. Read this user tip to determine if it might be incompatible:

If you have any PowerPC (Rosetta) Applications, you may have to manually import the data from the backup:

And then find the applications that are equivalent to them that are Lion compatible.

Upgrading from 10.4.11 to Snow Leopard - Questions needing answers..

I am currently running Tiger, 10.4.11 on my MacBook and want to get it up to current Snow Leopard. My laptop is about 4 years old now and need to know if I can upgrade it.
Secondly I tried to install it with the Leopard system software I received with with my Mac Pro and when I started the install it hang for about 30 seconds and then I got an error message to inform me I could not install that version of OSX on my computer. Did this happen because I was trying to install it with a disc that came with another mac or simply it isn't possible to upgrade anymore? I would be surprised if the laptop is no longer upgradable. Is the problem memory?
Do I need to buy the Leopard software and will it work.

Upgrading from HTC Incredible (3G version) to HTC Rezound, need to transfer ALL data

Well, what the title says. Can someone please tell me ( in clear, intelligent, unbroken ENGLISH!) how to transfer EVERYTHING from my old phone to the new?
Neither phone is <Deleted> or in any way modified, and I don't plan on changing that. So far, I have the Rezound fully charged, but I have not, and will not so much as turn it on until I know I can get everything transferred.
By everything, I mean pretty much everything. Not just contacts. I want all my app data. There is no way I'm losing 2+ years of progress in all 6 versions of Angry Birds! I need all my text messages (SMS/MMS) to "magically appear" on the new phone, just as if they had originally been received on it, with conversations and reply ability intact. I want my web browsing history transferred. I want all my photos,etc.. transferred. Essentially, I refuse to accept anything less then turning on my new phone and having it appear and function as though my "old" phone had simply magically grew a bigger screen, with no other changes. The bigger screen is the only reason I'm getting a new phone anyway, so I see no reason to give up anything I already have, or to be inconvenienced by lost data. I don't want to hear that this isn't possible. YES, it is, from a technological stand-point. With the high prices Verizon charges for service, along with this ridiculous $30 "upgrade" fee, I expect them to find a way to make it happen. I shouldn't have to jump through hoops, or pay for some 3rd party app, or be <Deleted per the ToS>. Ultimately, if this can't be done the way I want, I will drop kick the new phone across the parking lot a few times and send it back, along with a demand for a bill credit for the screen protector and case I already bought and installed and can't send back.
So, can anybody please help me, with clear, specific instructions and/or direct links to said info? I don't need "my cousin's brother's next door neighbor might have heard of some app that they think exists" or "Forget it, dude", or "Get over it" ,etc... type responses.

You cant, all you can do is transfer your, contacts, pics and music, and maybe bookmarks from your browser. If the app does not have its own backup feature, you wont be able transfer your data. Sorry. I feel your pain, I went from Incredible 2 to Rezound. Rezound to Razr M, even then, no backup feature in app, I still could not transfer app data.. Those app ******** (lol)

After upgrading from win 7 - win 8, do I really need the win 7 recovery partition?

I'm a happy camper after upgrading my HP Spectre XT from win 7 to win 8 (Win 8 upgrade offer). The 128GB SSD disks just makes everything so smooth and fast.
However I am abit annoyed with the Win 7 recovery partition that still uses 20 GB of my total 128GB space.
I have tried searching the forums, as well as the www for any good answers, but I end up more confused.
So I am asking the community some questions that interests me, and hopefully you can provide me with some meaningsful answers
1. Can I now delete my win 7 recovery partition, and if so what is the most effiecient and safe way to do it?
2. Is there a a good way to make sure that if (heaven forbid) something would happen, I still would be able to recover my notebook preferably to win 8, and not the preinstalled OEM win 7?
3. Of course the Spectre XT has no optical drive, so if its doable I might need to make an win 8 recovery partition in the end. Is it possible?

You can use Windows builtin Disk Management to delete the partition, or EaseUS software. Both procedures are outlined at EaseUS site:

As for a Recovery option after deleting, look at System Imaging which is builtin Windows 8 also.You need an external USB hdd for this.

I have a Macbook running OS X v. 10.5.8. Wanted to upgrade to 10.6 so that I could eventually upgrade to Maverick, however I get an error that says "MAX OS X 10.6 can't be installed on this computer".
The computer meets the minimum requirements as stated in the installation instructions.
1 gb ram
5 gb harddisc space
Intel processor
Not sure why this error appears. I purchased the disc from ebay and it is gray. I have noticed others have a similiar issue even with the ones they purchase directly from Apple.
Is there a solution to this issue?

I upgraded from iTunes 4 to Itunes 7, do I need to revert all the way back?

I upgraded to 7 because I was unable to use the Music Store. I had heard about people losing their music, so I did back up my library as data. At first everything worked perfectly and all my songs were there. My son just got an iPod, so we created a new user on my puter and started iTunes for him. I think that may be when my iTunes got messed up.
I'm having the issues listed already, horrible sound, song files can't be found, etc. So when I switched users to check my son's library, his was just GONE. Everytime we log on to his name, iTunes tries to reinstall.
So do I need to uninstall 7, and reinstall 4 before I upgrade to 6? Can you still use the Music Store with 6?

I hope to update to Mavericks from Snow Leopard 10.6.8. Somehow--I don't remember how--I received this update called Mac Installer version 1.0 2.9 mb. I have been suspicious, so it is in my trash. This was received about 3 months ago. The only thing similar I can find is an Apple Software Installer dated in March 2012, but it is only 1.3mb. Is anyone aware of this kind of update for Snow leopard in order to go to Mavericks?

If this person has the exact same MacBook as you, then yes, this drive will fit.
Starting up & shutting down times can fluctuate. It's when your computer starts taking 5 minutes (or more!) to be ready for use that you probably have some issues.
Get rid of Sophos. You don't need anti-virus software on your Mac, especially stuff that runs in the background. There are NO viruses that can attack your Mac, and the handful of trojans/malware/other nasty things tend to come bundled with "software" (ie: a pirated suite of iWork, or a download from a suspicious site). They also require your username & password in order to install themselves on your computer.
Also, what does PeerGuardian do? I don't have any experience with that piece of software, and it may also be unnecessary for you to have.
It's not uncommon for the spinning wheel to show up when opening Word or other Microsoft Office applications. The speed at which they open is largely dependent on how fast your hard drive is. Which version of Word do you have?

Selling original 15" mbp upgrading to new 13" unibody, need some advice

I just got the dead video card problem on my original 15" macbook pro that i purchased back in june of 2007. I've been thinking about upgrading to the new unibody for awhile and this video card problem seems to be the opportunity. Once I get my computer back from apple and all clened up I was thinking about selling and then taking the money and putting it towards the new 13" unibody macbook pro, then making up the difference out of my own pocket. my questions are...Where should I attempt to sell my 15" original, and how much am I looking at getting? IMovie 9.0.7 will not complete the update either with the download dmg file from the apple site or from the OS software update. I would appreciate some advice.

When installing the new update 9.0.7 to iMovie either via a dmg file or from the software updater the install will not complete the installation. The indicator bar just stays in the same place with the note install time remaining about a minute. I have let it set for hours and nothing happens. Does anybody have any advice?

After signing into the Mac App Store (MAS) with your iTunes Apple ID, look at the Purchased page. You should see the three bundled iLife apps listed with Accept buttons. After you have accepted them and Apple has verified that they came on a new Mac and assigned them to your Apple ID and iTunes/MAS account, you should be able to update them.

Things are getting to slow down alot with the latest version of Photoshop and Illustrator. For example, zooming in and out takes a while. Alternatively, boot with the Leopard disc, wipe the machine using Disk Utility's Erase function, zero out data to wipe any of your stuff using the Security Options, install Leopard, and on restart, hold down the CMD+S keys.
This puts the machine into single-user mode and gives you an Unix command line terminal screen. When the text stops scrolling, type in this command and click the return key:
shutdown -h now
This shuts down the computer; the next time it is turned on, the Setup Assistant will appear and the new user will get to personalize it, just like you did when you first started it up. Include the SL disc, and let the user experience upgrading the machine. Once, it gets to 10.6.6+, the new user can call Apple Store's telesales agents and order Lion. That results in an e-mail containing a redemptions code for use at the Mac Apple Store.
