Upgrading from 10.3.9 to Tiger

I'm looking for some advice. I have an Imac G5 circa Feb 2005 running Panther 10.3.9. I purchased the Tiger 10.4.10 upgrade cd but now I'm getting nervous about doing the update after reading some posts. I wanted the higher OS since it is needed to run some new applications coming out. When I do the upgrade to Tiger what's the best way to do it? Will any of my applications be affected? I have apple works (although I use office) on the machine. Will that still work. What about the Itunes, garage band, etc. I read somewhere that these are not included in the OS-is that true? Would I have to buy the I-life software. Thanks

Millie, I have been trying to install Tiger from 10.3.9 for the past 2 weeks. I hope you have better luck than me. I also bought a install dvd of Tiger from ebay.. unfortunately, I have no been able to load. It keeps crashing... as soon as the spirally thing starts... Once it actually got to checking my installation disc and went to 70% and crashed.. other time it got to the choice of languages... but usually it just gets to the twirlly spiral mode and crashed with that wonderful black box that tells me to reboot. I'm totally disgusted. I need the Tiger to run my newly purchased CS3 I bought from the Education dept. website. so i've got $400.00 sitting here in a box doing nothing.
I paid 58.00 for my dvd. I'm not happy. the ebayer is trying to help me get going on this, but so far my computer G4 dual 450.. just has a problem with it. I wish someone could help me figure out why it keeps crashing? It says on the dvd Mac OS X Tiger Includes Xcode 2 Install DVD version 10.4 ZZ691-5305-A.. It looks authentic... I checked to see if the label looked fake, but it does not.

10.4 is Tiger, & 10.4.11 is as high as Tiger goes.
10.5.x is Leopard
10.6.x is Snow Leopard
10.7 is Lion
The highest OS your Core Duo can run is 10.6.x, you cannot install or run 10.7 on it...

If it's a core Duo & not a Core2Duo, then it'll only run in 32 bit mode.

Upgrading from a G5 iMac running Tiger to a new iMac.

I am upgrading from a G5 iMac running Tiger to a new iMac, can I use 32Gb SD Card to move iphotos, itunes, ivideos? If so, how do I do it and insure I keep slideshows, playlists etc. I have built in iphoto, itunes etc.

Your Tiger iPhoto library may need upgrading with a Apple Library updater tool before you can use it with iPhoto '11. Reference. More iPhoto help just in case.
Make sure that that SD card is an SDHC card, and not just an SD card, or it may not be readable in your new iMac.
Here is the layout of the iTunes 11.0.1 Music folder on OS X 10.8.2. It may vary from what you have on Tiger.

Error message when trying to upgrade from 10.3.9 to Tiger 10.4.5

Hope somebody can help. I'm fairly recent to macs as have always built and used pcs. Am having trouble upgrading from current pantherOS to Tiger. Bought emac with upgrade disc provided by seller. Disc was gray labelled emac. Installation went fine and everything was proceeding to point it finished writing files, configuring installation, and running installer scripts and then it quit with message: error installing software. Try reinstalling.
Tried reinstallation and same thing occurred. then Tried complete erase and new installation. Same error message.
Came to discussion group searching for something I might be doing wrong. Decided maybe disc was wrong even though it specified emac which is what I am using. Bought generic install disc that would install on any G3/4/5 with minimum specs per hardware which system met.Installation proceeded as it was going to install same as emac disc. This is normal full install disc for generic installation.
All installations screens came up and installation proceeded to same point as before and then quit with same message: error installing software/ Try reinstalling.
Have removed ram to original 256MB and tried. No luck. I am using external DVD for installation of DVD and wonder if this is problem but in the forums external DVD seems to work alright. Can reinstall old Panther OS without any problem
Ran hardware test and everything checked okay.
Should I just forget about upgrading and use 10.3.9 but would really like to know what is wrong. thanks. Rick

Upgrade From 10.1.2 to Tiger

I have a friend who was using her flat panel iMac mainly in OS9. She wanted to upgrade to Tiger and has been sold the OS but is now worrying that she will have to wipe her entire hard drive to install it. She doesn't want to do this. Will the discs perform an upgrade?

Hi Danktuft ,
First make sure you buy the retail full install version of Tiger (black DVD). You cannot use hardware specific disks that shipped with another computer (gray).
You cannot directly upgrade from 10.1.x to 10.4.x. You will have to either reformat the drive (recommended) or do an Erase&Install. In both cases all your data will be lost, so make sure you have a complete backup!!!
If your computer can boot into OS 9 natively:
I suggest to reformat the drive using the OS 9 install CDs. By reformatting the drive with the OS 9 disk you are safe that all required OS 9 hardware drivers will be installed properly.
0. BACKUP YOUR ENTIRE HARD DISK - it will be completely erased during the following procedure!
1. Boot up from the OS 9 install CD and reformat the drive as Apple Extended (HFS+).
2. Install OS 9 and update it to 9.2.2: Mac OS 9: Available Updates
3. Confirm you can boot into OS 9
4. Upgrade your firmware: Firmware Upgrades
5. Insert the Tiger install DVD and reboot while holding down th c-key.
6. Once the installer has started select "disk utility" from the menu.
7. Select "repair OS 9 privilegies" from the menu.
8. Repair the disk.
9. Quit disk utility and proceed with a normal install (do not select Erase&Install because this would erase your OS 9)
10. After the reboot Repair permissions!
11. Download and apply the Mac OS X Update 10.4.8 Combo PPC.
12. Repair permissions again and finally run Software Update from the Apple menu to install all remaining updates (yes, you should install all at once because only the software update app knows the exact order in which they have to be installed).

Upgrade from 10.1.5 before Tiger?

I have an eMac and don't know much about computers. I was told to get the MSOS X 10.4. Do I need to upgrade something before attempting to install? I can't event get the install information to come up on the desktop.

I agree with Templeton that more details on how you are going about trying to install Tiger would help us help you.
Meanwhile, here are some things to consider:
1. Does your eMac have a DVD-capable optical drive? Tiger ships on a DVD. If you do not have a DVD-capable optical drive, you can exchange the Tiger DVD for CDs. See the info concerning the "Media Exchange Program" in the box in the right border of this page.
2. Assuming your eMac has a DVD-capable drive, have you tried starting up your eMac using the Tiger DVD?
3. I believe you must have Mac OS X 10.2 Jaguar or later installed in order to install Tiger by the Upgrade Install method. Let me explain:
• The article "Mac OS X 10.4: About installation options" states "... "Upgrade to Mac OS X" appears (unless the installed version can't be upgraded, as described in this article)."• The reference to "this article" in the quote above is to the article "Mac OS X 10.2: Upgrade installation requires Mac OS X 10.1 or later," which states one cannot upgrade from 10.0.x to 10.2. I think this reference is incorrect w.r.t. TIger.
• I believe that reference is incorrect for the following reason: in the manual "Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger Installation and Setup Guide" that should be included in your Tiger retail package, it states on page 3:"If you already have Mac OS X v10.2 or later installed on your computer: All you need to do is Upgrade Tiger..."This implies to me one must be running 10.2 or later, not 10.1.5 as you are now, to use the Upgrade Install. You could use the Archive and Install option discussed on page 7, again presuming your eMac has a DVD capable drive and that some other problem is not prohibiting the disc from mounting.

What to be aware of upgrading from 10.2.8 to Tiger

I have an iMac superdrive G4 17" flatpanel. I am running on 10.2.8 currently but am considering upgrading to Tiger. What should I be aware of with regards to my software if I do upgrade - most importantly my Photoshop 7, Illustrator 10, InDesign 2 (am not wanting to invest in all the upgrades of that and Tiger at the same time) -or for my Epson printer drive? I'm just worried that I'll upgrade and find that much of what is on my computer will now have difficulties and require more $...
Any help or advice?

Welcome to Apple discussions.
I do not use those applications so I have no first hand knowledge. I would check with the manufacturer's web site to check on compatibility. You might also do a search of the OS X 10.4 forums to gain additional information. The printer "should" work - but, again, check to see if Epson has upgraded the driver to work with Tiger.
If you decide to upgrade, have a good backup (I just described my own approach to back up and upgrading here):

Is upgrade from French Panther to English Tiger recommended?

Hi all
I guess the title says it all...
I'm currently running the French version of OS 10.3.9 (even though I always use it in English) on an iBook G4 purchased in France, with a French keyboard.
I'm pretty sure I need to upgrade to 10.4 but I have a couple of questions:
1) Am I more likely to run into problems if I try to upgrade to the English version of Tiger?
2) I have Macromedia Studio MX 2004 and Adobe Creative Suite v1 installed and rely on them for my living. I've checked the Adobe Tech Notes and it appears that all the initial problems encountered when running these packages on Tiger have now been ironed out. Does anyone know if there are still any outstanding issues/problems that I should be aware of?

Hi Martin,
MAC OSX is multilingual. You don't have to be worried in between french and english.
I personally used os 10.4.8 and MacroMedia Studio MX 2004 and I have no problem with it (I had performed all MacroMedia updates). However, I have CS2; so I could not talk about CS1.

Upgrade from 10.3.9 to tiger and can no longer restart or shutdown

I upgraded my powerbook G4 with 1 gb of ram with tiger recently and ever since, I can not reboot or shutdown without holding down the powerbutton. The system shuts down all programs and then hangs on the desktop with no applications running... just a blank screen.
If I press the powerbutton, the window that prompts you what you want to do (shutdown, restart) comes up, but does not do anything.
I use file vault.
Any ideas? I can not find anything on this on any support site. I can not reinstall the OS again... as I can not restart into the CD or boot from a CD by holding down C.

Since you can't boot from the Tiger install disc to run Disk First Aid repair, you can run FSCK instead with instructions for doing so provided per this link.

Worried about upgrading from 10.2.8 to Tiger

I know, everyone tells me I should upgrad to Tiger. I've been using 10.2.8 for some time now on my iMac FP and I got a lot of applications on it. My thinking is "If it aint broke, don't fix it" but I am finding that new stuff like the newest Java and iLife, etc., don't run on 10.2.8.
So, can everyone put my worries to rest? I guess I want to do the "upgrade" so I don't lose my existing apps. I have two large firewire drives. If I back everything up to there, is that a good idea? Or, since I'm doing an update, I don't have to worry about that? When you upgrade, what happens to all the apps you've installed in the "Application" folder? Are they still there? I would think that things like "Terminal" and other OSX apps would be replaced.
My internal drive is 80G and I'm using about 33G of that. I have one FW external drive that has 140G available. Should I "clone" my 33G internal to it, then do a clean install. If I do that, how do I get my stuff back over from the clone to the newly formatted 80G internal with Tiger on it.
I'm sorry for all the questions, but its a big step for me to take. Is upgrading just as good as doing a clean install?
More questions, I know.

If we go right back to the original Question we can assume that you are concerned about loss of data and the possibilty that a new or upgraded os will not operate to your satisfaction.
Point 1. regardless of what you do relating to the os you must have a backup?
Point 2. If you do not have a backup then make one. This is without question the most important fact of all time regarding data on a computer regardless of what system amd which os you run.
Point 3. all advice given by others is good, the choice of which app to use regarding a backup is often personal as many apps do the job as required.
Point 4. If a backup exists then you already have your insurance. Making changes to your os can be done without worry as this is the primary reason that backup apps exist. If we ever take the time to read the "read me files"
All of them state that we should make a backup before installing new data!
Point 5. I wish you a happy Christmas and wish all a happy mac in the new year.

Upgrade from 10.1.2 to Tiger (can it be done)

I have a relative who is still using 10.1.2. He is using a flat panel G4 with 512k ram and 40GB HD. he would like to upgrade but he still has some old system 9 apps that he uses and does not want to lose them plus he still wants his iMac to work. Can this even be done.

Tom has given you information on the System Requirements for Tiger.
Your relatives flat panel will run the latest version of OS X, (read Tiger). This computer has Open Firmware, and does not need a Firmware update. Although 512 MB of RAM meets the minimum requirement I suggest upgrading to 1 GB of RAM.
Expanding on what Tom said, Tiger can be purchased from the Apple Store or, on CDs, from applerescue. See this article for options on Installing Tiger without a DVD drive.

Upgrade from OS 9.1 to Tiger...is it possible?

I have a Powermac G4 running OS 9.1. I have recently upgraded the processor from a 466 to a 1.2, and added the maximum amount of RAM (1.5gb). I have an available copy of Tiger that I would like to install. I am guessing that the best option would be a clean install, as opposed to an upgrade.
I have just updated the firmware...I would love any input about what I may be overlooking before going ahead with the install.

These are other questions you should be asking:
1. Is your data backed up?
2. How much free disk space do you have?
3. Is the majority of your software already available for Mac OS X, and are you going to buy, or install the necessary updates to run them natively in X?
4. Are the drivers available for Mac OS X to connect your peripherals?
Mac OS X doesn't have a "clean install" option. Rather as was already mentioned you don't have to erase your drive to install it. There are these options for installation:

Upgrading from 10.3.9 to Tiger 10.4.6

I would like to find out if there are any major issues in upgrading to the Tiger OS? What I'm concerned about is how the new OS will effect the functionality of my pre-intel software, as well as my pre-intel G5.

Obviously you may have some third-party applications that will require upgrading in order to be compatible with Tiger. This may also be required for some preference panes, contextual menu items, and some startup items. You should plan to upgrade the software before upgrading to Tiger or immediately after the upgrade. Incompatible preference panes, cmms, etc. should be upgraded or disabled before installing Tiger.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now shutdown the computer for a couple of minutes and then restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
How to Clone Using Restore Option of Disk Utility
1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
2. Select the backup or destination volume from the left side list.
3. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (journaled, if available) and click on the Erase button. This step can be skipped if the destination has already been freshly erased.
4. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
5. Select the backup or destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
6. Select the startup or source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
8. Select the destination drive on the Desktop and press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. At the bottom in the Ownership and Permissions section be sure the box labeled "Ignore Permissions on this Volume" is unchecked. Verify the settings for Ownership and Permissions as follows: Owner=system with read/write; Group=admin with read/write; Other with read-only. If they are not correct then reset them.
For added precaution you can boot into safe mode before doing the clone.

Can you upgrade from os x 10.4 tiger to os x10.6 snow leopard

I have just bought a 2nd had mac book pro 2006 model 2gb ram and 100gb hdd it is running tiger 10.4.11 I have realized that i need to upgrade this to be able to use the lastest i tunes etc and also to be able to sync my iphone 4. can you upgrade straight from tiger to snow leopard 10.6 or do you need to install leopard 10.5 first.

Backup first
It is always best to have a full bootable backup before you upgrade. If you fail to do this you will be unable to return to this OS if you decide you don't like the new OS. Also there is a slight chance that an install could lose everything on the Mac. The backup must be to an external hard disk. Preferably use Carbon Copy Cloner to make a bootable backup of the whole disk.
Erase before the install
Once you have a bootable backup on an external disk it is best to erase the internal disk with the new installer DVD before you install.
During the install
Preferably do not import any data or preferences from earlier OSs during the install process as this can reintroduce bugs.

OS X 10.4.x - Tiger
OS X 10.5.x - Leopard
OS X 10.6.x - Snow Leopard
OS X 10.7.x - Lion
OS X 10.8.x - Mountain Lion

Those wishing to upgrade to Leopard should be aware that install disks can be expensive unless you contact Apple. Upgrade beyond Leopard
OSs beyond OS X 10.5.8 require an Intel processor. If in doubt check this: Click the apple at the top left of your screen and select 'About this Mac'. This will give you your OS number. Then click 'More Info' to see which processor you have. If it says PowerPC you cannot upgrade to Snow Leopard and above. Help! Trying to upgrade from 10.2.6 to Tiger

I keep getting an error message saying I need to have 10.3 or higher already installed to upgrade to Tiger. And, I can't find an upgrade to that online. HELP!!!

Mac OS X Versions 10.1, 10.2, 10.3, and 10.4, are complete system upgrades that must be purchased.
The point upgrades, such as 10.1.x to 10.1.5 (Final) 10.2.x to 10.2.8 (Final), 10.3.x to 10.3.9 (Final), and 10.4.x to 10.4.6 (Pending), can be downloaded for free.
Tiger is available for purchase at The Apple Store (U.S.).
Panther, is no longer available directly from the Apple Online Store, as Tiger 10.4.x is the most up to date OS.
A Full Retail Version, of the Panther Install CDs, or a Full Retail Version of the Tiger Install DVD, can be purchased rather inexpensively, at some online Apple retailers, Amazon, eBay, AppleRescue, etc.
Be sure not to purchase grey, upgrade or machine specific CDs or DVDs.
Panther is only on CDs, not DVDs.

Once Panther 10.3.x is installed, you can use the 10.3.9 Combo Update, to upgrade to the final version.
If your Mac meets the System Requirements for Tiger, you could also consider installing that.
And then use the 10.4.7 Combo Update.
