Upgrading from 10.4.11 'Tiger' to Leopard

Hi, I have a mac running on 10.4.11 and someone bought my daughter 'iLife 09' as a Christmas Present but we cannot install it unless we have Leopard Software. Is there anyway to 'upgrade' to Leopard without having to go out and buy a whole new Snow Leopard Software package. I took the iLife 09 back to the apple store to get a refund - because I thought I might as well just buy the new Snow Leopard as it is included in this - but as it had been opened (my daughter tried to install it) they would not give a refund. So if I can upgrade at a relatively low cost to Leopard, then I can install iLife so it won't have gone to waste. Can anyone advise? Apple told me to ring one of the London stores and ask for the 'Archive' department, but I'm sure I read somewhere that it is possible to upgrade online. AFAICT, the boxed set doesn't contain a separate Leopard installer, only Snow Leopard, which may not work on the iMac in question. Apple's phone sales is the only Apple outlet for the retail Leopard installer—$129 USD.

If not, you are using the wrong disc.
Does it say Upgrade, DropIn, or OEM?
If it does, you are using the wrong disc.
Since your Mac is compatible with Snow Leopard, unless you have some pressing need to only be running Leopard, and not Snow Leopard, it is cheaper to upgrade to Snow Leopard with the regular retail box for Snow Leopard from the Apple Store. You do not need to buy the Box Set, nor do you need to buy Leopard to upgrade to Snow Leopard.
If you need Leopard for something not compatible in Snow Leopard, call Apple Support as they may still have the retail Leopard available. The online store does not, and only a few used and refurbished Mac shops still have the retail one available.

It sounds more like you are trying to use an updater rather than the Snow Leopard installer DVD. You might read over the following:
How to Install OS X Updates Successfully
A. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions:
Boot from your current OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.

Can I upgrade from Panther 10.3.9 to Leopard 10.5.2?

I have a Powerbook G4 running 10.3.9. Can I use the OSX 10.5.2 disks from a newer MacBook Pro to upgrade the G4? I tried but a message comes up saying 'you cannot install this software on this computer' but I'd like to know why.

Limnos is correct. Also, note, the Find File system of 10.5 is much weaker than 10.3.9 for locating files quickly by name. Though if you find files mainly by content, then it is better to have Spotlight. See this thread on how difficult it is to work with Spotlight based systems:

Maybe this is an opportunity to decide if you really want to upgrade that machine to Leopard or Tiger, or just stick with Panther. Unless you have some software that is Mac OS X 10.5 or 10.4 only compatible, I see no reason to upgrade your Panther machine to Tiger or Leopard. Furthermore, Upgrading to Leopard will disable the Classic environment, unless you add an Firewire external hard drive with 10.4.11 or earlier, or erase and partition your hard drive to have 10.4.11 or earlier on it.

Personally I never trust my data to everything working perfectly.
I always backup everything twice at least.

How do you apply a Blackberry Software Upgrade on Mac OS X Tiger or Leopard ??

Bell has issued a notice that all my blackberry users upgrade their software but they are all using Mac OS 10.4.11 Tiger or Leopard.
I understand that Blackberry Desktop Manager is windows-only software and Bell business support was unable to accomodate us. Anyone out there able to do this without windows-emulation software ? Is there Mac OS X compatible software coming in the future ? I need to advise users currently how to apply this and for the future can we stay tied to this as a mobile solution with no native software support ? Please advise any feasible workarounds ?

I really wish RIM would come out with a real BlackBerry Desktop equivalent for Mac, but right now I don't think there's any way you can do upgrades directly from your Mac without using Windows via emulation or BootCamp. Unfortunately, RIM's only official word about this that I can find is that upgrades are not supported on Mac (http://www.blackberry.com/btsc/search.do?cmd=displayKC&docType=kc&externalId=KB13963). I use VMware for this.
Not exactly convenient, but maybe your carrier would do the upgrade for you at one of their stores.

You have to purchase the Snow Leopard DVD ($29.00) and then upgrade your system. Or you can erase the drive and install from scratch. Your choice. If you choose to upgrade then do the following:

1. Disconnect all peripherals except the original mouse and keyboard.
2. Quit all applications if this is not an installation from an Installer DVD.
3. The installation process should not be interrupted. If a power outage or other interruption occurs during installation you may have to erase the hard drive and reinstall from scratch.
4. Once the installation begins do not use the computer in any way except to reply to dialog prompts or to restart when the installation is completed. This is especially critical during the installation stage known as "Optimizing the System."

B. Clone your existing system to an external Firewire drive.

3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
4. Drag the startup or source volume to the Source entry field.
5. Select the backup or destination volume from the leftside list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
6. Check the box to Erase Destination. Skip this step if you've already formatted the drive.
7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
C. Decide upon an installation option.
You have three upgrade options. If you use the Upgrade installation option be sure you have repaired the hard drive and permissions first and made your backup. If you choose the Archive and Install option then you only need to repair the hard drive. Note that Show Leopard does not have an Archive and Install option since that is done by default unless the drive is erased in advance.
Neither of the above options will erase the disk. Some of your software may not work with a new system. You will need to upgrade those programs. It would be best to do the upgrades to your software before upgrading to the new system version.

My apologies if this answer can be found elsewhere, but I don't know where else to turn. How can I upgrade from OS 10.5.8 to snow leopard so THEN I can update to Lion? Can't do anything unless I already have 10.6 or higher and I don't. Now what? Everything on the apple store keeps pointing me to LION. It's like they are forcing you to get Lion, however I can't do that if I don't have the previous upgrades. Am I missing something? As others have stated... you now have to Telephone Apple to get a copy of Snow Leopard...

Then... Before attempting any Major Upgrade... get yourself an External Hard Drive... and create a Bootable Clone Backup of your current Hard Drive...
By far the easiest way to make such a Backup, is to use something like

Before embarking on a major OS upgrade, it would be wise, advisable and very prudent if you backup your current system to an external connected and Mac formatted Flash drive OR externally connected USB, Thunderbolt or FireWire 800, Mac formatted hard drive. Then, use either OS X Time Machine app to backup your entire system to the external drive OR purchase, install and use a data cloning app, like CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper, to make an exact and bootable copy (clone) of your entire Mac's internal hard drive. This step is really needed in case something goes wrong with the install of the new OS or you simply do not like the new OS, you have a very easy way/procedure to return your Mac to its former working state.

You can purchase Snow Leopard from the Apple Store ( and numerous resellers). It costs about $30, plus state taxes.
10.6.6 up to 10.6.8 will install the "App Store" where you can purchase and download "Lion" (10.7).
Make sure your machine meets the Lion install requirements before you buy.

I'm trying to upgrade from OS X 10.4.11 to Snow Leopard. (At this point it's been such a headache that I don't even care about Lion.) If I've read correctly, I need to first upgrade to OS X 10.5 Leopard. The only problem is that I can't seem to find it anywhere on the Apple site. I even searched for the Mac Box Set that included Leopard, Snow Leopard, and iLife and can't find it either. I went to an Apple store today and they didn't even Snow Leopard on the shelf. Anyone know how I can get from 10.4.11 to Snow Leopard? Do I still need to go to Leopard first? I tried looking at the requirements/tech specs for the Snow Leopard install disc in the online store, but that link takes me straight to the tech specs for Lion. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

You read correctly, but that info isn't correct, if your Mac can hadle 10.6 then the $29 Disc will install on 10.4.x...
