Upgrading from 10.4.11 to SL - reboot cycle

Hello ... I need some help ...
I currently have an iMac (Intel Core 2 Duo) running Tiger, OSX 10.4.11 and am trying to upgrade to Snow Leopard and am stuck in an endless reboot cycle before the install starts. I insert the disk, click on "Install Mac OS X" and I get a window that has one button, which says "reboot" The messsage says "reboot to start install". I reboot, then the disk pops out and when my computer starts again, I put it back in and it starts all over again. HELP!!! Thanks so much.

OK, so I should have put the disclaimer, I need step by step instructions ... I rebooted (from apple menu) and held down the "c" key when the chime hits, but it still pops out the SL install CD and takes me to my usual log in. Am I doing something wrong? Thanks!

  • My audio aggregate device is not stable in Mountain Lion, it was fine before I upgraded from Snow Leopard - every time I reboot the computer it loses the configuration and so it is not available in Logic Pro

My audio aggregate device is not stable in Mountain Lion - it was fine before I upgraded from Snow Leopard. Every time I reboot the audio aggregate device (MOTU TRAVELER, MOTU PRE8 1, MOTU PRE8) has to be reconfigured so that it is available within Logic Pro.

Most likely you have Office 2004 which are PPC-only applications and will not work in Lion. Upgrade to Office 2011. Other alternatives are:
Apple's iWork suite (Pages, Numbers, and Keynote.)
Open Office (Office 2007-like suite compatible with OS X.)
    NeoOffice (similar to Open Office.)
LibreOffice (a new direction for the Open Office suite.)

  • Upgrade from Tiger to Leopard keeps on rebooting

Two months ago I bought the new iMac 2.4 Ghz with Max OSX Tiger.
Today I wanted to upgrade to the new Leopard with the dvd I received yesterday.
Everything went ok (I've chosen the upgrade function). When the system rebooted I got a login screen from Leopard and then the OS started further. On my desktop I received a message that my OSX was rebooted because of a problem with the installation (it gave me the possibility to "report" or "cancel"). But even before I can make a choice, a grey curtain comes over the desktop and a popup appears to ask me to reboot my Mac with the power button.
When I do this, the same thing as above happens.
I tried to reinstall the system by pressing the C during startup. But after reinstall the same thing happpens.
I checked the forum but problems with the only threads I find are related with a blue screen. This doesn't happen with me. The system starts up, but I keep on getting the screen to reboot the system.
Anybody with the same problem ?

I just bought an iMac and got the upgrade to Leopard thru up-to-date. Using the standard upgrade, I couldn't log in, then was on the phone with apple for 7 1/2 hours, trying the archive and install (which crashed) and then I finally had to reinstall Tiger, then erase and reinstall Leopard. Now I'm having the same problem as you all, namely, Leopard will go black randomly and reboot. It's not like it's going to sleep or anything, it just dims to black and then starts up at the grey apple again. I didn't expect this from a brand new mac.

  • I've just upgraded from Snow Leopard to Lion. Installation seemed to go OK but on rebooting it is asking where the System Events app is.  What is it and where is it located?

    Thanks

If the dialogue appeared once, and you cancelled once, the dialogue may reappear when you next log in. For more certainty I suggest a restart of the operating system, then a log in.
If you like: immediately after the problem is worked around, open the Console utility to see whether — amongst its view of all messages — there is an obvious sign of what caused the dialogue to appear. (If you see nothing obvious, don't waste too much time looking.)

i downloaded an upgrade from itunes last night to os5.1 i think. it said there was a problem with the download. now my phone will not work at all. it just has a picture of the itunes logo ans a picture of a usb cable on it. my computer will not recognise phone either

Try rebooting it and connect. Make sure you're connected directly to a USB port using the Apple USB cable.

  • Idsm-2 problem: sensor upgrade from 4.1 to 5 or higher

    Hi all,
I have a problem with my IDSM-2 module. I'm trying to sensor upgrade from IDS to IPS software (from 4.1 version to 5.x or higher).
If I do this from sensor under "admin user" and use major patch - IPS-K9-maj-5.0-1e-S149.rpm.pkg then I receive error:
"Error: idsPackageMgr: digital signature of the update file was not valid, use CCO to replace corrupted file ".
But file "IPS-K9-maj-5.0-1e-S149.rpm.pkg" is NOT corrupted. I cheked it under "service user" with md5sum utility - checksum is correct.
If I try to upgrade from maintance mode (ie re-image with wipe all information in application partition) then I receive:
"Application image upgrade complete. You can boot the image now.
    Partition upgraded successfully"
Next, I'm reboot IDSM-2 module and receive:
"000133: Sep 7 15:10:18.622 MSK/MDD: %HA_EM-6-LOG: Mandatory.go_bootup.tcl: GOLD EEM TCL policy for boot up diagnostic

ie module go to the "PwrDown" state.
I try to upgrade for next firmware:

    and did not get success
    chassis - 6509-e, sup - VS-S720-10G + VS-F6K-PFC3C, ios - s72033-adventerprisek9_wan-mz.122-33.SXI6.bin
    maintance software for IDSM-2 module - 3.4(2)m
Could you please help me? Thanks in advance!

I have a problem with my IDSM-2 module. I'm trying to sensor upgrade from IDS to IPS software (from 4.1 version to 5.x or higher). It has been a long time since I've seen a sensor running 4.1 or an upgrade to 5.0(1e) . If I recall correctly, there were some issues with upgrading if you were running a release from the 4.1 train earlier than 4.1(4). Additionally, the upgrade from 4.1 -> 5.0 includes a configuration conversion (due to differences between the software trains), which was prone to failure depending on the presence of certain configuration options.
Unless you absolutely need to keep the existing configuration, you would save yourself time and effort by simply re-imaging the sensor directly to the desired release. Modern (supported) releases would be either 7.0(5a)E4 or 6.2(3)E4.
Next, I'm reboot IDSM-2 module and receive:"000133: Sep 7 15:10:18.622 MSK/MDD: %HA_EM-6-LOG: Mandatory.go_bootup.tcl: GOLD EEM TCL policy for boot up diagnostic000134: Sep 7 15:10:18.290 MSK/MDD: %DIAG-SP-3-MAJOR: Module 4: Online Diagnostics detected a Major Error. Please check sup-bootflash diaginfo file for previous detailed diagnostic result.000137: Sep 7 15:10:19.170 MSK/MDD: %OIR-SP-3-PWRCYCLE: Card in module 4, is being power-cycled 'off (Diagnostic Failure)'000138: Sep 7 15:10:19.170 MSK/MDD: %C6KPWR-SP-4-DISABLED: power to module in slot 4 set off (Diagnostic Failure)"
I would try re-imaging the sensor once more using the IPS-IDSM2-K9-sys-1.1-a-7.0-5a-E4.bin.gz System Recovery Image file found here, following the procedure described here. If the module still fails to boot after that (still citing a Diagnostic Failure), try moving it to another slot in the chassis (if possible).
What color is the IDSM-2 Status LED (on front of module) when it is in this state? An RMA may be necessary to resolve this.

  • Huge memory leaks after upgrading from kernel 2.6.38(?)

My system began leaking memory some months ago and I've little to no idea what is causing it. The closest hint I can give is that I think these problems started around upgrading from Linux 2.6.38 to 2.6.39 and have continued with 3.0 aswell. Sometimes my whole system freezes due to extensive swapping (HDD usage led stays lit), sometimes it stops after consuming almost all of my 4 GB RAM.
I think the leak has to come from inside the kernel because all sysmon apps claim no application is eating too much RAM yet the system memory consumption is at 100 % or even using swap. Even after I kill Xorg the memory usage will stay at least at 2.0 GB, when it should be less than half a gig.
I'd like to guess the blame is on Nouveau, because it was giving me a hell of a time back with Linux 2.6.39. It had a habit of freezing my system when re-enabling suspended compositing (both with Kwin and Mutter). Also video playback was corrupted sometimes. These probs have since been fixed with Linux 3.0.
I cannot name any spesific app that might trigger this memory leaking. I don't play any games and mainly use Firefox, Chromium and VLC day in, day out.
There seems to be absolutely no way of reclaiming the reserved memory than rebooting the whole system. I have even tried unloading Nouveau.
I am currently running the [testing] repo with ~daily upgrades.

OK, this kind of surprised me. No wonder I couldn't find any relevant stuff while googling for kernel issues. I have had Strigi disabled for some time now because it is miserably broken, but I now disabled the whole Nepomuk too. Let's see if my problem now goes away or what...
The release of KDE 4.7 Beta 1 actually lines up with the launch of Linux 2.6.39 so this really might be the case. I moved to KDE 4.7 already with the first beta.

  • Upgrading from Mountain lion

I am upgrading from Mountain Lion to Mavericks. I tried to install Mavericks from the AppStore, everything went OK (download, etc), until the system had to reboot and it was when everything failed. The system couldn't start, it stalled when the apple logo appeared, but the mouse was resposive (really weird). I tried several things cleaning the PRAM, etc, and there was no booting, or alternative to start the system. After trying all the different combinations to boot and see no change, I realised that the left option key somehow was unresposive at startup, and that was one of the identified problems. However, I manage to use the right option key and I was be able to boot from an external hardrive using a recovery partition from a clone of my system. I restored the system with my back-up from Time Machine of 10.8.5. I have a mid 2010 MacBook Pro, where I have a SSD drive. My drive is OK and It was checked prior to installation of the system etc. Any Ideas on how to able to install 10.9, or an expected release date of a new installer? It seems this has been happening to a lot of people.

    OK,
I did the following (I did not purchase DiskWarrior or any other 3rd Party software)
Backed up to an Time Machine Drive
Reset the EPROM (zapped it or whatever they kids these days are calling it)
Booted off a Mavericks USB stick.
Ran Repair Disk & Repair Permissions
    Installed Mavericks
Worked fine, took a while but up and running.
Not sure what the HD damage error was but it's working away on my old work horse (17" Late 2007 MacBook Pro).

  • System freezes when attempting to upgrade from Snow Leopard to Lion

I hope someone can help me out there.  I have downloaded the Lion upgrade install program and built an install disk on my jump drive using Lion Diskmaker 2.0.2, but when I tried to upgrade from Snow Leopard to Lion using the jump drive, the install freezes at 24% and I cannot reboot or anything.  It just keeps coming back to the install screen.  Any suggestions?

This could be due to a number of causes. If you have the Lion installer application, then I suggest you put it in your Downloads folder. Now do this:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
When you've done the above you should now double-click on the Lion installer application in your Applications folder. When prompted click on the Install button. Note that you will not use the flash drive you made as you shouldn't need it. And, this will avoid any issues with a bad flash drive installer.

  • ITunes Not Recognizing my iPod Touch after Upgrading from Tiger to Leopard

After upgrading from Tiger (10.4.x) to Leopard (10.5.0=>10.5.6), my iPod Touch is no longer recognized by iTunes 8.0.2. The iPod Touch no longer appears in iTunes' "source list" (left side pane in iTunes' GUI).
Immediately prior to that upgrade, my iPod Touch was working great with Tiger (10.4.x). iTunes 8.0.2 recognized it (listed it in sources) and always synchronized with it successfully.''
My iPod Touch is also not shown in the Finder. However, it does show up as recognized in iPhoto.
Any ideas on how to get the iPod recognized again in iTunes under Leopard?

Thanks to a posting by Jim in a different Apple Discussions (forum), my problem is now resolved. Read on for the details.
iPods & Finder. Some other postings incorrectly lead me to believe that the iPod would show up in the "Finder". Jim's posting set me straight on this.
iTunes Not Recognizing iPod Touch. Prior to Jim's posting, I had already read the article that Jim referenced (to remove and reinstall the Apple Mobile Device Service per article "http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1747").
Prior to Jim's posting, I had also read other articles in various "Apple Discussions" (forums) that suggested this recognition problem could be resolved by uninstalling/re-installing iTunes 8.0.2. Some implied that you could just re-install iTunes 8.0.2 right over the currently installed one without bothering to uninstall it.
Based on those postings, I "gambled" last night and simply downloaded and re-installed iTunes 8.0.2 (without uninstalling it first). I noticed during the installation that the Apple Mobile Device agent was also re-installed. Well, my gamble paid off! After the installation (and a reboot?), iTunes onces again RECOGNIZED my iPod Touch.

  • Mavericks upgrade from Mountain Lion deletes all user accounts

This is a lesson for upgrading too early (and too eagerly).
Today I tried the Mavericks upgrade from Mountain Lion on my 2007 Macbook Pro, after going through all the pre-installation/pre-upgrade checklists.
I don't think I have gone from a very high to a down low in such a short space of time.  I really wanted to move on from Mountain Lion and when the installer finished the upgrade to Mavericks and re-started my MBP, I was super excited.  When the restart completed and I was presented with the login prompt, I tried entering my user name and password.  First time, it shaked on the password... OK, you'd think that is a typo.  Re-entering the password... same thing.
You can imagine what ensued.  After entering my password v-e-r-y slowly many times, I started realising that something went very VERY wrong.
Just for information, I used two different user accounts on my MBP under Mountain Lion.  The one account had administrative priviledges and was only used for installing applications and a few other administrative tasks.  Then I have a second personal account, which does not have administrative priviledges and is the account I use daily for Mail, Safari, iTunes, programming etc.
None of those accounts worked under Mountain Lion.  Basically, there is no way in.
I then proceeded to boot with the startup option Cmd + S (command-line access).  Once that was completed, I was in as root and checked the /etc/passwd.  None of the user accounts were there.  I was only able to find two user accounts: root and nobody; and a long list of user account that started with an underscore (I think these are some sort of esoteric user accounts).  So, it appears that the Mavericks upgrade did not accurately bring over the user account information from my Mountail Lion installation.
Then, I went into the /Users directory and there I could see the home directories for all the users as they were defined under Mountain Lion.  The contents were intact too.
It seems to me that the Mavericks upgrade from my Mountain Lion forgot to bring over the user accounts but it did preserve the contents of all the users' home directories.
Unless anyone can spot some sort of user error here (please let me know), I am heading back to Mountain Lion pretty swiftly.  Otherwise, I suspect there is a bug in the Mavericks installer.
    Any assistance is appreciated.

The reason this occurred is a mystery and has not been commonly reported. Consider the following. It may or may not help. You should probably print these instructions before proceeding.
Boot Single User mode again and do the following:
(You can skip the first step. It will check your boot volume for errors and correct what it can. If there were errors the installer should not have proceeded, but the possibility exists that directory corruption may have occurred during installation. That seems unlikely to me but could explain what went wrong.)
    In Single User Mode:
At the :/ root# prompt, type fsck -fy and press Return or Enter. It will take a few moments to complete. If you are concerned that nothing is happening just press the Return key until you see the :/ root# prompt again.
Once the disk check is complete and the prompt returns, type mount -uw / and press Return / Enter.
Type launchctl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.opendirectoryd.plist and press Enter. If you get an error message you may ignore it.
Type ls /Users and press Enter. All of the usernames on the computer will be listed, which is helpful if you don’t know or remember what these are.
Type dscl . passwd /Users/username password while replacing username with one of the users displayed in the previous step and replacing password with the new password of your choice. Press Enter. You will likely get an error message about a file or directory not being found. You may ignore this.
    Type reboot and press Enter.

  • After upgrading from Win 8 to 8.1 my DVD RAM GT80N SATA Drive is no longer working

After upgrading from Win 8 to 8.1 my  DVD RAM GT80N SATA Drive is no longer recognizing discs. When I first put a disc in the drive runs for a bit and then stops. I've tried updating the driver but it says it has the most current driver. Under manage, it does not show any error codes and it says it is working correctly. I've looked at the regedit and it does not have any of upper and lower filters. I've tried disabling, rebooting, and reenabling. What am I missing? Another issue I've had since upgrading is that my network adapter needs reset several times a day in order to remain connected to wifi.

  • Officejet 8620, fail to print, windows 8.1 (upgraded from windows 8)

I have spent many hours trying to resolve an issue on a Dell Vostro laptop, that was upgraded from Windows 8 pro to Windows 8.1 pro and has the latest updates installed. When printing, the print is delivered to the print spooler, it is there momentarily, then disappears. Nothing is delivered to the printer, and no activity is observed at all on the printer. This is on 2 different 8620 printers. I am able to install and print to a laserjet M1217mfp from the laptop with no problems. A different machine that was loaded directly with windows 8.1 prints perfectly to the 8620 printers.
I have tried the following  with no success:
    1) Install from original HP 8620 installation CD
    2) HP Print and scan doctor - remove the print driver and download latest software . ( 3 times)
    3) Manually deleting all printers, Stop spooler service, delete print driver from Print Server Properties, uninstall all HP software, reboot and install from latest print driver OJ8620-198 downloaded from this link: http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software12/COL51217/bi-124140-4/OJ8620_198.exe
    4) Same procedure as step 3, including stop spooler, rename C:\Windows\System32\spool\drivers\x64\3 to C:\Windows\System32\spool\drivers\x64\3.old. Reboot and install from latest driver as above.
    5) Run level 4 on HP Officejet Software and Driver Removal Utility from the link below and reinstall : http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?cc=za&lc=en&softwareitem=mp-110134-1
    6) Same procedure as step 4, as well as removing printer registry keys in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Environments\Windows x64\Print Processors except "winprint" key. Delete all HP folders in C:\Program Files\HP. Reboot and reinstall latest driver.
    7) Follow the manual procedure described in Microsoft KB2987964 "Cannot print by using a Hewlett Packard XPS-based print driver after you install KB2769165" http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2987964 Version of hpbxpsrender.dll is 0.3.7600.16385 consistently through all of the steps listed.
    9) Create a new local administrator account on the laptop. Follow the procedure in Step 6.
The issue seems to be that the spooler discards the print immediately and it also seems to be related to the upgrade from windows 8 to Windows 8.1 but only for Officejet Printers. The only option I have not tried yet is to format and reload the machine with Windows 8.1 Pro, but this is a drastic step to resolve a problem that should be resolved by HP based on the many reports posted on the Internet by users experiencing this issue on OfficeJet printers.
What can be done to resolve this?

    Hi @Electronza ,
Thank you for providing all the detailed steps you have already tried to resolve this issue. I would like to help you out today.
I have provided a document with some steps for the Print Jobs Disappear from the Print Queue and Do Not Print (Windows 8). Go to Step 4: Rename the HPBXPSRENDER.DLL file, since you have already tried the other steps.
Please take a look at this document from my co-worker, if the issue persists. The driver installed might be the Class Driver and not the HP Full Feature drivers. Missing or partial print issues on Windows 8 / 8.1.
Please provide in detail the results if you are still having issues.
    Have a great weekend!
    Thank You.
