Upgrading from 120GB to 250GB Hard Drive. How do I backup / exchange?

I currently have a 120GB hard drive and just bought a 250GB drive to replace it as my needs grow. What is the best way to transfer data from the 120GB to 250GB? Should I backup with time machine fully as it is now, turn computer off, exchange the hard drive, then boot from leopard disk and press restore from time machine? Are there any other ways?

Sure, you can do that using Time Machine. However, be reminded Time Machine is a 'version 1' release - meaning it's rather new and not necessarily 100% solid. Some comments I've seen on these discussion forums suggests some people having issues with files not being copied over (and not only cache files - which would be benign).
An alternative would be a software which makes a 1-to-1, bootable clone of your current system drive. CarbonCopyCloner http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html or http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html (please note: SuperDuper is currently not supporting Leopard - they are working on it though).
These programs copy all and everything onto your new drive. And, you can boot from it too. After the copy process, reboot and hold down the Alt/Option key right after you hear the bong. This will show a menu with all the bootable volumes you can select from (or use Startup Disk in the System Preferences to select the new boot volume, and restart)
Hope this helps!

  • SHAREPOINT QUESTION: One way SYNC of files from SharePoint cloud to hard-drive

SHAREPOINT QUESTION: One way SYNC of files from SharePoint cloud to hard-drive
How does a person enable Sales reps to SYNC literature files from a cloud library down to their computer,.... but then not be able to have them accidentally delete the files by accident if they delete a file from their computer and then have it
    sync upwards again.
    Permission Level
"Read" allows to download individual files but not SYNC down and there are too many files for them to go and download each file every-time.
"View Only" is only visible on the browser and not useful when reps are in remote parts of the world.
"Contribute" allows the sales reps to SYNC but if they delete a file from their computer, then it deletes it for all which is to much.
There must surely be a way to allow a one way (cloud-to-hard-drive) SYNC to avoid folks from deleting files.
Does anybody know how to d this or if not, how do I have Microsoft consider such a perceived weakness compare to dropbox

You can achieve the functionality which you describe using the OneDrive (SkyDrive Pro) in Sharepoint 2013. You can setup read only folders to sync to achieve "one way" traffic. You will need Office 2013 locally to avail the full features of
the coauthoring environment if you are looking into that as well.

Some benefits of using OneDrive include the following:
Users can take their documents offline with them and have them synchronize when they are online again.
Users' documents can be synchronized across all client devices and servers where the files are stored and synchronized.
Multiple users (online or offline) can work on documents at the same time, and the OneDrive for Business Windows Sync client will synchronize the changes between the users. If there are conflicts, users are prompted to resolve the conflicts.
Users can share and collaborate on documents.
Users can work from many locations, either online or offline, and work from many devices.

There is another option if the Macbook will start up in Target Disk Mode.
Restart the computer while holding down the T key. If you see the firewire symbol moving around on the screen you can connect this one to another one in TDM. You will need a suitable cable to connect the two Macs.

How do I access my encrypted User Account files from my Back Up hard drive?  Time Machine  was used to create the back up disk; File Vault was used to encrypt the files.

Thanks.  I will try going through TM.  Since my Simpletech is on the way out, I'll be plugging in a new external hard drive (other than the back-up drive) and trying to restore the library to the new drive.  Any advice or warning if this is NOT the right thing to do?
Meanwhile, that is a great tip to do an alternate back-up using a different means.  It's been tough to figure out how to "preserve access" to digital images and files for posterity, knowing the hardware will always fail/obsolesce sooner or later, and that "clouds" are only as good as their consistent and reliable accessibility.  Upping the odds with redundancy will help dull the edge of my "access anxiety", though logically, it can never relieve it.  Will look into

  • How do I transfer all data from my old internal hard drive to a new internal hard drive

How do I transfer all data from my old internal hard drive to a new internal hard drive? I have an iMac with a 320gb internal HD that is full and I am replacing it with a 2tb internal drive. I have several external drives; 1 tb, 2tb and 3 tb. The 2 tb is being used for Time Machine. Do I have to buy an enclosure? If so, where would I get an inexpensive one?
I also want to partition the new internal drive for Windows, and I'm not sure how much space to use for that. I plan to use Windows to check my work in PowerPoint created on my Mac for clients on PCs.

Do you already have Time Machine making backups onto the 2TB drive? If so, after you get the internal drive replaced, boot up into the recovery partition (hold down ⌘R) and restore the latest Time Machine backup that you have onto the new internal drive.
I recommend always having two backups. I'd use SuperDuper to make a complete clone of your internal drive onto an external drive in addition to having the Time Machine backup.
Boot Camp is what is used to make partitions for Windows. How much space to allocate depends on how much space you expect Windows to use up based on how you plan to use it.

I've recently formatted my 10.7.4 mountain lion MacBook from 2007. The hard drive is wiped and I think it deleted to OS too. How do I put the OS back on it?

Wiping the drive does indeed delete the OS. Try this -
Boot to the Lion (10.7.4 is Lion not Mountain Lion) recovery partition by restarting the computer and holding down the command and R keys during startup.
If this works, reinstall from here. You must be connected to the Internet to do this.
If this does not work, possibly because you reformatted the recovery partition as well, you will need to reinstall from your original disks (assuming it came with 10.6 or earlier.) Boot to the disk by holding down the C key during startup and run the installer.
    Best of luck.

  • Backed up my songs from itunes onto a hard drive and now my playlists in itunes are gone! How do I retrieve them back to the way it was before?

Help! My husband backed up my songs from itunes onto a hard drive and now my playlists in itunes are gone from my library! How do I retrieve them back to the way it was before?

    Hello Nataroo007,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities!
There is a file in the iTunes library folder that contains your playlist information is the iTunes Library.xml file.
Try and find the file, usually located in one of these locations depending on your OS:
    Operating System
    Default location of iTunes Folder
    Mac OS X
    /Users/[your username]/Music
    Microsoft Windows XP
    \Documents and Settings\[your username]\My Documents\My Music\
    Microsoft Windows Vista
    \Users\[your username]\Music\
    Microsoft Windows 7
    \Users\[your username]\My Music\
Then you can import this file to your iTunes Library like this:
    1. Choose File > Library > Import Playlist.
    2. Navigate to the "iTunes Library.xml" file
    3. Windows users: Click Open.
If your Podcasts list in iTunes is empty after following these steps, learn how to add them back into iTunes.

Lost my hard drive and also an Ipad, but have 7 k photos on a Touch that I need to load on fixed IMAC with a new hard drive, how do I do it. (There were more photos than the 7k, but they were saved on other drives, thank goodness).  7K pohotos on the Touch are no where else, must be saved!  Just never went from a Touch to iMac.  I have the cable hooked up and then what, I don't want to mess up,my last chance to save 7k pics!  New Aperture and IPhoto on IMAC with no other photos loaded on the new hard drive yet.

I'd ask in the iTouch forum where there are more iTouch users there than here and they should know how to off load the photos.  It might take a 3rd party app.

You want system, data, backup etc. Make good use of the four internal drive bays.
You will have to use Disk Utility to ERASE or click on drive and use PARTITION to make it Mac writeable.

  • How to disable Time Machine from backing up to hard drive

Mountain Lion (OSX 10.8) will not install onto iMac (under OSX 10.7.4) because: "hard drive is Time Machime backup disk" error message.  However, TM Preferences does not show the iMac HD as a TM backup Location Option - it only shows the LaCie External Drive - which has been the storage drive receiving the Time Machine Backup.  How do I remove/prevent Time Machine from looking for and/or backing up to the iMac Hard Drive if the TM Pref does not list the iMac Hard Drive as an option? Note: The iMac HD icon on the desktop is a "Time Machine image" (blue Drive icon w/white white counter clockwise arrow).  Thanks.

Check to see if you have a file called backups.backupdb on the hard drive you are attempting to update.
If the install procedure see such a file, it might think that it is a TM backup drive.

Your profile says you have 10.6, so why bother with the original 10.5 OS?
But to your question, before you erase anything, make a backup of your data for safe keeping and restoration. Having an external hard drive for this purpose is most useful.
