Upgrading from 12GB to 24 GB ram

I currently have 12 gigs of ram and I want to upgrade to 24 gb.
My system is working great and fast with Premiere CS5 with the Mercury Playback Engine, but I want improvement in AE CS5
I have a similar question in the Adobe Hardware forum but I figured since it is Aftereffects I want to see my performance improvement I should ask it here too.
Here are my current specs:
Intel Core i7 CPU   X 908@ 3.33GHz
ASUS P6X58D  Premium - LGA 1366  motherboard
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002WSHXQ2/ref=oss_product
My current memory is  12 gig of Corsair CMD12GX3M6A1600C8 Dominator 12 GB PC3-12800
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002QSHG7O/ref=oss_product
There are no more slots to add memory (of course!).
So I would need a complete 24 memory kit and will need to ebay I guess the 12 gig kit.
On the aftereffects forum someone mentioned they are buying/considering 24GB Kingston HyperX DDR3 1600
http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Delectronics&  field-keywords=24GB+Kingston+HyperX+DDR3+1600+&x=0&y=0
I would appreciate any suggestions for brand and "model" of memory to buy.
Thanks
Rowby

Fair enough. I would rather attribute that to some exotic branding in the BIOS or possibly Dell using a custom built mobo sub-series that only supports this and that, though. I've never had any of those problems, but of course, given that my life might depend on a working production machine, I wouldn't be miserly about spending 20 Euros on a tested brand product over a no name product.

  • Upgraded from 2gb to 4gb of RAM and now my Imac freezes up all the time.

I have a 2009 model Imac and I upgraded from 2gb to 4gb but now after about 20 minutes of the computer being on it will freeze up randomly. It could be 20 mins - 3 hours of use before it freezes up. I did my research and I'm didn't get any RAM my Imac couldn't handle...so I have NO idea what's wrong. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

As old as it is have you cleaned out the dust? Dust buildup can lead to over heating issues. Remove any and all things plugged into it including the power cord, Remove the RAM access grille. Vacuum all openings starting with the RAM access area (air intake). Vacuum all ports and plugs, DVD slot and the opening across the top of the rear of the body. Blow compressed air through all your openings and vacuum again to remove any dust you loosend. Reinstall the RAM grille. Plug in the keyboard and mouse if not blue tooth. Insert power cord...

  • Upgrading from 12gb to 24gb ram. Is it worth it?

    Hey all,
I've got After Effects CS5 (The whole Production Premium actually) along with a i7 930, 12gb ram, GTS 250 1gb, 3 WD Black HDs, and things just seem bogged down in AE as well as switching to Premiere then obviously using Dynamic link. I've got 3 processors at work with 2gb each in the MP settings and the rest of the ram / processors for other applications. I'm trying not to starve the system or used cores of ram as suggested. I've also setup my HDs the way Adobe has suggested with program on 1 HD, cache/scratch on another, and output on another.
Of course each person uses AE differently. But my work is 720p max or less usually working with 3D space, particle effects, and so on. Clips are 30 seconds or so max.
With all that background out of the way, would I see a nice performance boost by doubling my ram to 24gb? I would want to leave say 8gb ram for other apps, and then have 2-3gb per core for After Effects (whereever that leaves me). Would this be worth it? Again, things seem very slow. I feel like my ram preview should be faster and switching from AE to Premiere just lags big time. And yes, I've decreased ram previews res, size, framerate, but I hopefully don't have to have as much sacrifice in these areas if I have more ram.
This is the ram BTW I was thinking of getting:

Any thoughts or experiences after upgrading to 24gb would be greatly appreciated.

    > Is there any noticable difference with memory that has a faster clock
speeds or less latency values, or is it all pretty much the same for
    After Effects?
I haven't done a lot of comparative tests.
There is no one generalization that applies to speed with After Effects. There are too many variables to give simple answers.
At the risk of stating the obvious, faster things are better; slower things are worse.
If the speed of getting data to and from RAM is the bottleneck, then faster RAM will be better.

    Hey Rowby,
I saw the document Kopriva posted in the AfterEffects forum. Quite a large document; very informative. I am going to work with it. I figure I will always be learning new stuff for Ae. I primarily work in Premiere and my largest client is pushing me into Motion…
I keep it simple: RAM – of my 12GB available I assign nine to Ae leaving three for OS and possibly Pr idling in the background or for bailing to Digital Juice etc (now Ae idling and possibly do an [Edit/ Purge/ All]). If I do anything demanding in Ae I tend to do it when everything else is shut down. Of my eight cores available I reserve two for other apps. I have the Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously turned on.
In my earlier post I mentioned settings because it sounded like you were really dogged down; IMO more RAM is certainly a good idea if you can afford it. I want more myself for longer previews etc…
    Happy Computing,
    Richard

  • After upgrading from Win 8 to 8.1 my DVD RAM GT80N SATA Drive is no longer working

After upgrading from Win 8 to 8.1 my  DVD RAM GT80N SATA Drive is no longer recognizing discs. When I first put a disc in the drive runs for a bit and then stops. I've tried updating the driver but it says it has the most current driver. Under manage, it does not show any error codes and it says it is working correctly. I've looked at the regedit and it does not have any of upper and lower filters. I've tried disabling, rebooting, and reenabling. What am I missing? Another issue I've had since upgrading is that my network adapter needs reset several times a day in order to remain connected to wifi.

  • I want to upgrade to Lightroom 5, but I'm concerned about compatibility with my 2008 intel Core 2 Duo iMac with only 4G of Ram.  Will I be able to run Lighroom 5 if I upgrade from Snow Leopard to Lion?

I want to upgrade to Lightroom 5, but I'm concerned about compatibility with my 2008 intel Core 2 Duo iMac with only 4G of Ram.  Will I be able to run Lightroom 5 okay if I upgrade from Snow Leopard to Lion?  What will happen to the applications that aren't 64-bit compatible?  Also the Eye-one Display 2 colorimeter to calibrate the monitor will not run on Lion, so that will be an expensive upgrade to an i1DisplayPro. Is the upgrade important enough to offset the expense?  I have an Epson R2000 printer.  Will there be problems with the drivers if I upgrade to Lion?  It would be great to hear from other mac users who are also photographers and who print their own photos.

Before upgrading to Lion be sure to read this link:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6271
    Adobe lists these requirements:
    http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop-lightroom/tech-specs.html
Looking at http://www.everymac.com/ even the earliest 2008 iMac was fully 64 bit, even though Boot Camp doesn't support 64 bit Windows on that machine.

  • Will Upgrading from 4 GB to 8 GB RAM Improve Performance

I have a 2009 2.0GHz Mac Mini with 4GB RAM. I use Photoshop CS4 and Lightroom 3 to process digital images. Lately, I'm processing higher megapixel files. I've gone from 10MP to 15MP and 18MP and would like processes to go faster.
Do you think that I'll see a significant gain in performance going from 4 to 8 GB RAM?

You may see some performance increase, but Photoshop CS4 can't address more than 4GB of RAM (it actually won't use that much, but I don't remember the exact figure), so expanding to 8GB won't be of as much benefit as it would if you upgraded to CS5 which is a 64-bit application and so is capable of addressing more RAM.
    Regards.

I am upgrading from Tiger to SL in a MCBPro with 2 gb ram and an intel chip and I get the following notice:  Installation failed.... THE INSTALLER COULD NOT COPY THE NCESSARY SUPPORT FILES. Any help is appreciated...

Yes.   I've found that works best.  Especially if the drive is external, since external connections are typically slower, and Spotlight loves to eat up space going back and forth.   Time Machine will eat up as much space as it can, and typically needs drives at least twice the size of the original hard drive that is being backed up, if being backed up in full.   So unfortunately there is a lot of empty space that is needed for smooth operation.

  • Using IMovie, will it matter if I upgrade from 512 megs of Ram to 1 gig?

I've upgraded one G3, and am thinking of increasing the Ram on this second computer. Will that significantly increase performance? It'd cost about $60 for the upgrade from 512 to 1 gig of RAM. Thanks. David

    David,
Generally speaking, more memory is helpful with OSX, especially if using heavy duty apps. If you would like to check how your 512MB is doing, restart your Pismo to clear out the swap files and memory. Now open Activity Monitor in Utilities, select System Memory at the bottom, then start using your 'book. If free memory is used up pretty quickly plus you start seeing 'Page outs' (hits to virtual memory) start climbing into the thousands, more memory is warranted.
I have 2GB in my MBP and just using Safari, Mail, and a few games, I can watch my free memory slowly decline over several days, mostly due to Safari I believe. At the moment, I have 500MB free using just the aforementioned apps.

  • HT1342 so how do i know if i need more ram? (upgrade from snow- mt. lion)

Here is the mac that i have. I want to upgrade from snow l. to mt, lion when it comes out. articles are saying that i will need 4gb even though the updae page says 2gb. how do i read the activity monitor to see if i need more ram for the update? or do i just need to wait, install teh update, and then check? I want to get this all done in the next month so help would be great!

2 GBs is the minimum required. 4 GBs or more would be better. Your model supports up to 8 GBs.
About OS X Memory Management and Usage
Reading system memory usage in Activity Monitor
Memory Management in Mac OS X
Performance Guidelines- Memory Management in Mac OS X
A detailed look at memory usage in OS X
Understanding top output in the Terminal
The amount of available RAM for applications is the sum of Free RAM and Inactive RAM. This will change as applications are opened and closed or change from active to inactive status. The Swap figure represents an estimate of the total amount of swap space required for VM if used, but does not necessarily indicate the actual size of the existing swap file. If you are really in need of more RAM that would be indicated by how frequently the system uses VM. If you open the Terminal and run the top command at the prompt you will find information reported on Pageins () and Pageouts (). Pageouts () is the important figure. If the value in the parentheses is 0 (zero) then OS X is not making instantaneous use of VM which means you have adequate physical RAM for the system with the applications you have loaded. If the figure in parentheses is running positive and your hard drive is constantly being used (thrashing) then you need more physical RAM.
Adding RAM only makes it possible to run more programs concurrently.  It doesn't speed up the computer nor make games run faster.  What it can do is prevent the system from having to use disk-based VM when it runs out of RAM because you are trying to run too many applications concurrently or using applications that are extremely RAM dependent.  It will improve the performance of applications that run mostly in RAM or when loading programs.

  • Can I upgrade from 1 gb to 2 gb RAM ?

    Hi All:
I have a client with 2 17in PBs, one 1ghz and the other 1.33ghz, and both have 1 GB RAM installed, Can she upgrade from 1 gb to 2 gb RAM ? ( via 2 X 1GB modules ). Even though the manual says the maximum RAM is 1 GB. Also what type of memory is it and what is a ballpark cost?
    Thanks
PS if possible i would like to hear from people that have done this.

I upgraded my 1.67 PB when I bought in January from 512MB to 2 GB. I purchased Mac RAM at DMS (http://www.datamem.com/AMM12.asp). I bought 2 1GB modules for 100.00 each which was less than half of what Apple wants for memory.
Haven't had any issues whatsoever and I run some fairly intensive apps (Apeture, FC Studio). The only app that has been a bit flaky is Lotus Notes (6.5.4) which seems to fail on startup every once and a while...

  • Im planning to upgrade my MBP late 2011's ram from 4gb to 8gb. Is there any specific brand of ram that i should buy or i can buy any brand that suits my MBP.

im planning to upgrade my MBP late 2011's ram from 4gb to 8gb. Is there any specific brand of ram that i should buy or i can buy any brand that suits my MBP? im aware of all the details that i need to consider pc3 - 10600 1333MHz 4gb. i just want to know is there any specific brand or i can use any brand,
    Thank you.

The most reliable sources for Mac compatible RAM are OWC and Crucial.  Macs seem to be selective with RAM so some brands will not work. Make certain that you get RAM with the exact specifications that apply to your MBP.
    Ciao.
If you have a need, be advised that you MBP can actually support 16 GB RAM.

  • Upgrade from 867 Mhz to 1.33 Ghz?

Hi, is it possible to upgrade from 867 Mhz to 1.33 (or better) Ghz?
I have a Powerbook G4 I bought in June 2003. I am still running on 256MB RAM and 40G. The battery doesn't really work anymore. I'm guessing I need a new battery, more memory, etc.
I realized I need to upgrade to 1.33 Ghz because iTunes 7.0.2 will no longer play video, and apparently I need at least 1 Ghz to play video.
Should I attempt these upgrades, or should I try to trade in my Powerbook and get a newer model?
    Thanks so much,
    Lisa.

I wonder whether it would really be worth the effort. As someone else has said, the logic boards from the later versions are not the same and it is unlikely you would be able to successfully upgrade.
Having said that you might want to consider upgrading the memory and the hard drive. I have the same model as you and have 1.12GB of RAM. I don't have any problems playing video from iTunes (although the odd video will sometimes stutter). In addition there isn't really anything that important (to me) I can't run. Programs like Garageband can put a bit of a strain on the system and iDVD encoding/burning is an overnight job for a full DVD but overall this is still one very useable system. Increasing you hard disk space can only be a good thing for your system too! One benefit of hanging on is that you will save a bit of money which you can put towards a new one!
The processor upgrade mentioned here sounds interesting but I have never heard of it before so am not in the position to offer any advice on it. I am a little surprised about the battery. I use my Powerbook everyday, often using the battery and have done since I got it in Feb 2003. I still get a couple of hours out of it...

  • Very slow encoding after upgrade from 5.03 to 5.5 with MXO2 mini

    Hi all.
After upgrading from CS5.03 to 5.5 my encoding now takes 5 times as long. A 2 minute HD Video file would take 2 minutes, and still does on the PC I haven't upgraded (identical almost) but now with CS5.5 it takes almost 11 minutes.
    Some explanation....
I create HD MJPEG files on a PC with Blackmagic Decklink.
I transfer these files to an HPz800 which used to run CS5.03 with Matrox Utils 5.1.1.37 and an MXO2 Mini with Max. (Nvidia Quadro fx4800 and 12GB of RAM)
On a Blackmagic timeline HD 1080i MJPEG with filters of Auto Color, Fast Color Corrector and Gamma correction a 2 minute timeline would encode in 2 minutes give or take a couple of seconds.
Now with CS5.5 and Mtx 5.5 an identical file takes 11 minutes to encode to Microsoft avi - Matrox 1920 x 1080i - 25fps.
If I remove the filters (which I need to be able to use) it will come down to 2 minutes as it used to be.....so it seems to be the filters are now slowing things down when they never used to. I have never rendered before exporting. Ever. So this time I tried rendering first and it brought the 11 minutes down to 7 minutes but when taking into account the 4 minutes rendering time I am no better off.
I have updated CS5.5 to CS 5.5.1 and MTX Utils to 5.5 and then 5.5.1 and it makes no difference. Still 11 minutes to decode 2 minutes with three filters, which is exactly what I have always been doing but now it doesn't work....
Can anybody help? or make a suggestion as to why using filters in 5.5 now multiplies the encode time by 5 when it never used to. Everything else bar Matrox Utils on this machine is as it was before the upgrade to 5.5 and as I say my older machine is still 5.03 it can do it all in 2 minutes even with the filters intact.
So have I really spent a small fortune upgrading to make my output 5 times slower. Not happy......

To go further, every single encode that I have done is slower than it was before with CS5.01 or 5.03.
This is odd because going from Blackmagic to any other codec doesn't necessarily need the Matrox box or Matrox utils
    Blackmagic HD or SD to
    Matrox HD
    QT HD MP4
    QT SD DV25
    DV AVI SD
    Mpeg2 - DVD
Every single encode is slow by 2x to 6x.
Why should Blackmagic HD to QT MOV MP4 take twice as long as it used to...... having said that The speeds I am seeing now are what it was like before I attached the box in the first place, whether a Matrox codec was involved or not.... It is acting like a blocked funnel. when it used to be a lovely wide and clear funnel.
Anyway Matrox have reproduced the problem and are investigating, so hopefully there will be an answer soon....

  • Upgraded from 10.6.8 to Yosemite and now safari crashes and everything is extrememly slow

How do I fix my computer after upgrading from 10.6.8 to 10.10.1? Safari quits responding constantly, my computer runs so slow it is virtually useless. I have an early 2008 iMac, 2.66gHz Intel 2 Duo Core, 2 G Mem. I got this report from EtreCheck

Slow performance after installing Yosemite on an older Mac is often caused by inadequate memory. Although you can install the upgrade on a Mac with 2 GB of memory, experience has shown that at least 4 GB is needed for full performance.
Select About This Mac from the Apple menu. If you have less than 4 GB of memory, and your model has upgradable memory, install as much as it can take, or at least that much. Any reputable RAM vendor will have a web form in which you can select the Mac model and be directed to compatible parts.
