Upgrading from 1GB ram to 1.5GB ram in iBook 14" G4

I have heard many stories about problems with putting the maximum of 1.5 GB ram in the 1.42Ghz 14" iBook.
My ibook is brand new, i got it early January.
I was wondering if the more experience Mac users (preferably ones who own 14inch G4s) would recommend doing this. Or if i should just stick to my 1 GB ram for safe measures.
thank you

You can check to see if you need more RAM. Restart your computer then open the Activity Monitor in your /Applications/Utilities folder. Click on the "System Memory" tab and check your page outs. After a restart, they should be set to zero. Check a couple of times a day during regular use of your computer. When your iBook starts to use your hard drive as "virtual memory", because you've run out of physical memory (RAM), you will see a page out. If you do not begin to accumulate page outs over time, then you don't need any more RAM. If you only accumulate ten or so, adding more RAM won't really make any noticeable difference. If, however, over time you're accumulating thousands of page outs, then you might consider adding more RAM. You may notice that only one application causes your iBook to page out. You could then make an informed decision about whether or not it's worth it for you to spend the money to add RAM to improve your experience with that one program.

  • Can I upgrade from 1 gb to 2 gb RAM ?

    Hi All:
I have a client with 2 17in PBs, one 1ghz and the other 1.33ghz, and both have 1 GB RAM installed, Can she upgrade from 1 gb to 2 gb RAM ? ( via 2 X 1GB modules ). Even though the manual says the maximum RAM is 1 GB. Also what type of memory is it and what is a ballpark cost?
    Thanks
PS if possible i would like to hear from people that have done this.

I upgraded my 1.67 PB when I bought in January from 512MB to 2 GB. I purchased Mac RAM at DMS (http://www.datamem.com/AMM12.asp). I bought 2 1GB modules for 100.00 each which was less than half of what Apple wants for memory.
Haven't had any issues whatsoever and I run some fairly intensive apps (Apeture, FC Studio). The only app that has been a bit flaky is Lotus Notes (6.5.4) which seems to fail on startup every once and a while...

  • Upgrading from 512 to 1.5 GB RAM?

Currently I have a Macbook Pro with just 512 MB of RAM. I was planning on buying this RAM from newegg:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/CustratingReview.asp?Item=N82E16820231066
Is it ok to have both a 1 GB and a 512 MB RAM stick in the computer at once, or should I have two of the same size RAM?

For best RAM performance (Dual channel mode) it's ideal to have two sticks of the same size; 2x512MB or 2x1GB and then you get about 6% benefit.
However, the performance gain is small compared to having more RAM available so, 1.5GB is better than 1GB for things like Aperture or if using Rosetta.

  • N100 SODIMM upgrade from 1GB to 2GB ... not working as expected, help please

I have recently bought some RAM modules for my N100 3000 series laptop which was originally bought around 1.5 years ago. The original modules that came with the laptop were 512MB x2. I am upgrading to 1GB x2 modules.
I ordered them from Ebuyer.com and they were Kingston modules, who declare on their website and on the packaging that the modules are compatible with the laptop. After installation and attempting various configurations, the overall outcome is that slot A accepts new RAM (both modules work in this slot), slot B doesn't accept new RAM (but does accept the original RAM), and all RAM modules work without errors.
Would you know what either I am doing wrong when installing the new RAM, or if there is a configuration setup I need to do to be able to install the new RAM in the BIOS?
Thank you in advance for any advice given.

Now you're talking about the internal bits that make Excel
behave the way it does. There is an entire section in MSDN (

  • Upgrade from 4x2 GB to 2x8 GB Ram results in strange Windows 7 64bit behavior

I wanted to upgrade my System, swapped the 4x2 GB (Adata 1600G) to 2x8 GB (G.Skill F3-2133C9D 16GXH) Ram to the Dual Channel Slots (2 x Blue)
The System asks me to enter Setup with F1 recognizing the mem change.
I have OC Genie active and tried it later without.
When I boot to Windows with the new RAM my NVIDIA Card has a yellow exclamation mark in my device list. Also NVIDIA Software can`t access the card telling me I would have not such an device active. I tried to reinstall the drivers without success.
I tried a couple of changes in bios and rebootet, but gave up after 40 Minutes of experimenting.
After I went back to my old RAM the system runs smooth like always.
Now I hope someone here can give me the right advice what to do, or ì`ll sent them back to the shop.
    System:
    MSI Z68A-GD80 (B3) (MS-7672) (Bios V20.1 01/09/2013)
    Intel Core I5-2500k @ 4200
    NVIDIA N560GTX-Ti
    New Ram: G.Skill RipjawsX F3-2133C9D 16GXH
    Old Ram: A-data 1600G @ 667 MHZ
    What I did:
1 G.Skill Ram in DIMM1 works good, also with OC
changed the other one G.Skill module workd ok (to be sure both are ok)
as soon as I add the second RAM NVIDIA Card doesnt work correctly, some programs give me strange warnings, blue screens, random crashes.
I choosed DIMM1 + 3 (Blue) or DIMM2 +4 and all other positions with no good result.
Even with default settings no luck.
i get the following error on my nvidia card in the device manager
"Windows cannot verify the digital signature for the drivers required for this device. A recent hardware or software change might have installed a file that is signed incorrectly or damaged, or that might be malicious software from an unknown source. (Code 52)"
Is it an error on the motherboard ?
How can I proof that? Any tools ? I`m really out of ideas ...
    Thank you

thank you. that`s what I had in my back mind
I didn`t thought that the performance increase is that less. any reviews you can recommend ?
Here is the memory scaling on a Core i7 2600K:
As you can see, in both cases (non-3D and 3D apps) the performances boost is close to zero.
So again: for all the current Core i5 / Core i7 processors, DDR3-1600 is the best match.
    Above that, nothing but troubles.

  • Will Upgrading from 4 GB to 8 GB RAM Improve Performance

I have a 2009 2.0GHz Mac Mini with 4GB RAM. I use Photoshop CS4 and Lightroom 3 to process digital images. Lately, I'm processing higher megapixel files. I've gone from 10MP to 15MP and 18MP and would like processes to go faster.
Do you think that I'll see a significant gain in performance going from 4 to 8 GB RAM?

You may see some performance increase, but Photoshop CS4 can't address more than 4GB of RAM (it actually won't use that much, but I don't remember the exact figure), so expanding to 8GB won't be of as much benefit as it would if you upgraded to CS5 which is a 64-bit application and so is capable of addressing more RAM.
    Regards.

  • Upgrading from 1GB to 1.5 GB

I have a powerbook 1.67Ghz G4 with 2-512MB Ram chips, I was wondering if there would be a noticable increase in speed if I upgrade to 1.5GB of ram, 1-1GB and 1-512MB chips.
Running photoshop and aperature have been a bit slow lately.
    thanks

You may want to check your system to see if more memory will help. Pull up the activity monitor (in applications/utilities on your hard drive). Look at the system memory tab, and specifically at page ins and outs. If outs are 10% or more of page ins, you can use more memory. If it's 50% to 100% of page ins, you can use alot more. A page out is when the system has to write current memory to disk, to make room for something else, and really impacts performance. The page ins/outs reset when you reboot, so don't worry about the magnitude of the numbers, just the relationship.

  • Portege M200 Upgraded from 1GB to 3GB memory - pc won't start

    Hi,
I bought a Toshiba M200 with 1GB memory. I had a problem with slow and freezing applications so I decided to add 2GB more of RAM.
The vendor where I bought my laptop told me that it's max capacity is upto 4GB. I just would like to ask if that's true?
Another is, what could be the reason why it won't start up if it can be upgraded to upto 4GB? Would I need a BIOS update or is it the RAM I bought which has compatibility issue.
Another point though, the 2GB that I bought works perfect when inserted but when it is inserted together with the 1GB RAM, that's the time when my laptop won't start up.
Both are KVR667D2S5 Kingston. Don't know if that would help.
    Thanks in advance!

Thanks. I can't find the specs for PSMC0L-02100C in google so I can't determine the Max RAM capacity.
You should try contacting Toshiba Singapore for the max amount of RAM that model can handle - it may only be 2GB max.
Sometimes 3GB can work in a 2GB-max laptop (when the 2GB module is in slot 1), but it may be unstable or cause problems.

  • Upgrading from 10.3 to 10.4 on a iBook G3

My friend has an iBook G3 and needs to upgrade for the iPhone. I was going over some of the tech specs and became concerned whether the iBook G3 could handle the upgrade-- I mean whether it would meet all the requirements or whether it is even worth it. Also the computer is saying that it only has a couple hundrede megabites of space left. Is that enough? Any help or advice would be reallly helpful!
    Thanks
15 inch MacBookPro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   help for an iBook G3

    According to http://www.apple.com/macosx/upgrade/requirements.html
Mac OS X Version 10.4 requires a Macintosh with:
    PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor
    Built-in FireWire
At least 256MB of physical RAM
A built-in display or a display connected to an Apple-supplied video card supported by your computer
At least 3.0 GB of available space on your hard drive; 4GB of disk space if you install XCode 2 developer tools
If that iBook G3 meets those, then it'll work. BTW, it doesn't meet the space rqmts.

  • Using IMovie, will it matter if I upgrade from 512 megs of Ram to 1 gig?

I've upgraded one G3, and am thinking of increasing the Ram on this second computer. Will that significantly increase performance? It'd cost about $60 for the upgrade from 512 to 1 gig of RAM. Thanks. David

    David,
Generally speaking, more memory is helpful with OSX, especially if using heavy duty apps. If you would like to check how your 512MB is doing, restart your Pismo to clear out the swap files and memory. Now open Activity Monitor in Utilities, select System Memory at the bottom, then start using your 'book. If free memory is used up pretty quickly plus you start seeing 'Page outs' (hits to virtual memory) start climbing into the thousands, more memory is warranted.
I have 2GB in my MBP and just using Safari, Mail, and a few games, I can watch my free memory slowly decline over several days, mostly due to Safari I believe. At the moment, I have 500MB free using just the aforementioned apps.

  • Upgrading from Serial ATA to SSD

Seemingly, upgrading laptop components through Apple is very expensive. RAM and hard drives to name a few. For instance, Apple quoted me on an upgrade from 1GB of DDR2 SDRAM to 2GB at $400. I just went and bought/installed 2 new sticks myself for $25.
I had the same idea for upgrading from a Serial ATA drive to a Solid State Drive. I was wondering how compatible is the existing slot inside the Macbook Pro?
When I upgraded my RAM, all I had to do was find the right specifications and voila, just remove the old sticks and insert the new ones. Is the process the same for converting from Serial ATA to SSD?
    Thanks, Alex

Serial ATA is the interface used to connect the hard drive to your computer. SSDs use serial ATA connection, so there's no problem.

  • Upgrading Mac Mini 2.1 (2007/08) from 1GB to 4GB RAM

Just joined, this is my first question.
Done plenty of reading on macupgrades; everymac; eshop.macsales; and macminiramupgrade..............so I know what I want to do and just want someone to confirm the right spec RAM if I give you a couple of part numbers of what I plan to purchase. Firstly:-
I have done the checks and my Mac Mini is a 2.1, 2007/08, annoyingly bought just before the next generation came out in the spring of 2009. The model ref is A1176. It only has 1gb (2 x 512mbs) of RAM. The main objective is to take advantage of icloud now we have two other apple devices (iphone4s and Ipad2). So to get there I have to upgrade the operating system from Leopard to Snow Leopard (which needs 1gb of RAM) and then upgrade again to Lion (which critically needs 2gb of RAM). Fundamentally it is imperative I upgrade the RAM and if I am going to have a go at that I might as well go to the limit of what my Mac Mini can take and I believe it can take just over 3gbs according to what I have read. That means using a 4gb kit (2 x 2gbs).
I have scrutinised the spec of the recommended RAM on macupgrades but that is with a view to only upgrading to 2gbs (2 x 1gb). They quote a Kingston 1GB DDR2 PC5300 SODIMM 200 PIN, unbuffered, non EEC etc. I cannot find any detail on the help websites that quote a 2x2gb upgrade (on my Mac Mini) although as I said I know it can be done even though you won't be able to use the whole 4gb.
I have found 2GB RAM from safe manufacturers such as Crucial and Kingston which are exactly the same spec. Please can someone have a look at and say that will do it?
Quick find code on Ebuyer.com for Kingston RAM is 121416..................just done it and it goes straight to the relevant page.
Went to the Crucial.com website for their product, put in the code CT2KIT25664AC667 in the search field and went straight to the product.
Always appreciate help from those in the know.
    Gary

OWC is a US site which does ship overseas.  You could look at the Samsung 2GB memory they carry and see if you can get it locally. It's Samsung part number M470T2953CZ3-CE6. I've had good luck with Samsung memory in various mac systems.
While you didn't ask this, you probably know that the benefit to using two 2GB memory (versus 2+1) is that the Intel architecture will run a little faster, around 3% to 5%+, since matched memory enables dual channel memory access.
See this article about installing Lion over Leopard. Snow Leopard is no longer available from Apple stores or Apple online. In the US, and I would assume other countries that have an Apple online store, you can call and order Snow Leopard off the legacy products list. Likewise, Lion is no longer available for download. However, you can contact the Apple online store and they can either sell you the USB stick with Lion on it, or, in the US I'm told they can sell you a code to download Lion online. That may require Snow Leopard if done through the App store.
I'm bouncing around a little here, so bear with me. On your question of Lion running in 3GB, not knowing exactly what you're running, I really can't answer that. I can point out that some people have been OK with Lion in 2GB, however, as you've read, many others have required a memory upgrade to, typically, 4GB. Right now, the Lion system I'm on is an iMac that is only using 2.98GB in wired+active memory. Applications running are mail, Chrome browser, and activity monitor.
You may want to post a discussion question in the Lion discussion area here on others 3GB (2x2GB memory cards) Lion experience on your 2007/2008 mini 2,1.   Or of course on the mini discussion here.
If I've confused more than helped, I plead that it's been a long day! Any other questions, please let me know.

  • Upgrade to 1gb ram from 512 mb

Hey folks, long time since i asked a question, I've been really glad with my MB for a while now had it since june of 2006, however it was until recently that I realized my problem was the low amount of ram,I believe OSX needs as much ram as one can afford, I read before a post which said upgrade to 1gb but don't buy it from apple, so I have 2 questions.
    1) what brand should I buy can I buy it from amazon.com or something, if you have a 1gb and 2gb option great, to see what can accommodate to my finances right now. I'm using Adobe cs3 a lot these days due to my studies in graphic design, so the faster the better.
    2) is it easy to install, I mean can I install it myself or do I have to an authorized reseller (no official apple stores in my country)
I thank you in advance for your replies!

After upgrading from Win 8 to 8.1 my  DVD RAM GT80N SATA Drive is no longer recognizing discs. When I first put a disc in the drive runs for a bit and then stops. I've tried updating the driver but it says it has the most current driver. Under manage, it does not show any error codes and it says it is working correctly. I've looked at the regedit and it does not have any of upper and lower filters. I've tried disabling, rebooting, and reenabling. What am I missing? Another issue I've had since upgrading is that my network adapter needs reset several times a day in order to remain connected to wifi.
