Upgrading from 32GB 3GS to 16GB iPhone 4

I'm upgrading from a 32GB 3GS to 16GB iPhone 4. After backing up the 3GS how can I restore to the 4 as I have more than 16GB of memory already used up on my current phone? I accept that I'll have to put only selected music on the new phone as this accounts for the majority of the memory (20GB) but is there a straightforward way of making this transition? Unfortunately in 2012 when I (903.647.0073) upgraded from the iPhone4s to the iPhone 5 I started having reception problems. I started having dropped calls in my home. I had to go outside to get reception without dropped calls. I was told that because of metal in my home I would have to purchase a Network Extender for $250. And we HAVE not metal in our home. AND our other lines all work fine. I felt this was ridiculous. We already pay $350+/month for service and I should NOT have to purchase additional equipment for a service that I already pay for. The manager of our local store at the time gave us at no cost a Samsung Network Extender. It worked beautifully until about a month ago. I went to our local Verizon store and was told that I would have to purchase an extender. THIS is RIDICULOUS. We have been loyal customers for over 7 years and have been very satisfied with our service. Unless this issue can be resolved without purchasing an extender we will be switching our service as our lines come up for renewal. I regret this as we have been very happy with our service. But we should NOT have to purchase anything extra for one line that will not get good reception. Again, we pay $350+/ month for a service that does not work properly, simply RIDICULOUS! Currently the "sys" light flashes red (slow) and the GPS light remains red. Please help this very frustrated customer.

Regardless with what carrier your with you might have the same issue, My recommendation would be to get a router that will help you with viewing live traffic and keep a tally of your usage and any device connected to your internet connection. You can go with the peplink balance 20 and be able to look at your traffic by the hour, daily, weekly, monthly or yearly. Look for trends, see what computers or devices are doing what I attached a screen shot so you can see an example of mine. You can purchase the router at 3gstore

If your backup is encrypted and you don't know the password anymore, you'll have to start from the beginning and set up the phone without the backup. An encrypted backup can't be used anymore without the correct password.

The messages should transfer, and the emails are attached to the email server so your inboxes will come back as well.

I want to transfer playlists from my iPhone 3GS that ARE NOT in iTunes to my iTunes 4. If I try turning on music sync in the music tab of my iPhone, a warning screen comes up saying all music will be replaced on my iPhone. I don't want to replace everything - I just want to sync the playlists that are on my 3GS to my iPhone 4.

At this point it would be best to restore both phones. Do backups of both old phones, and restore new phones from those backups. (make you choose the correct backup for each phone or you'll back were you started).
You can use multiple devices with the same computer, and even the same itunes library. Howevever, it may be easier just to set up seperate user accounts on the computer for the future.

I just upgraded from a 3Gs to the new 4s and I noticed that my Bluetooth in my car no longer works well with Siri. Everytime I use a voice command to dial a number it starts the search, finds the number and then says call ended!

Is anyone else having this problem? I never had a problem with the 3Gs!!

I'm replying to myself, as I have found the answer.
1. Started iTunes, connected iPhone 4S, turned on Airplane mode.
2. In iTunes, hovered mouse over my iPhone 4S name in left column, in popup box clicked on "Restore from Backup..."
3. From menu clicked on name of my old iPhone 3GS backup.
4. Backup appeared to be finished in about 8 minutes, but I new that could not be correct...iPhone had rebooted, so I entered password. I could see that most apps were "waiting" and grayed out, also in iTunes top status box indicated that apps were being sync'd. Also noted that my iPhone 4S now had the same name as my "old" iPhone 3GS.
5. After some time (a couple of hours, perhaps, not sure because I went to sleep), everything appeared sync'd on new iPhone, and iTunes stated that sync was OK.
6. Manually renamed my new iPhone 4S to its correct name, then backed up to computer.
I decided to hold off on iCloud for now - two majore issues: 1) have heard some reports of data dissappearing, and 2) I will have to talk to Apple about MobileMe instructions for moving to iCloud, which state that move will not transfer my mobileme email, and also that I cannot install iCloud management software (nor sync to Outlook) on my Windows XP computer - I intend to upgrade to a new Win7 in January 2010, and I have heard it is not so simple to change iTunes/device syncing to another computer. Sounds like a good project for the Christmas-NewYear holidays...

My question is...I have an unlimited family data plan, if I switch to an iphone will I be forced to change data plans? I work in litigation and I use a lot of data. My bill is already outrageous and I don't want to have to pay their ridiculous data charges on top of the $30 "smartphone data plan" charges for both phones.

If you have an old calling plan, you may not have much of a choice but to change plans. If your plan is relatively new, as mentioned above, you can keep your unlimited data by paying full retail price for your phone, getting the phone from somewhere like ebay (Best Buy and the like will also result in the loss of your unlimited data), or try swapping/adding lines. Also, if you aren't aware, as of this spring there is a $30 upgrade fee.

Upgraded from 1st gen Touch to iPhone 4S, now I get the beachball every time I connect the old iPod Touch

I recently upgraded my verizon cell phone to an iPhone 4S, and had been using a first gen iPod Touch, which is still quite functional and I'd lik eto give it to someone else in the family to use. The problem is that after the first time I connected the 4S, now iTunes will hang (spinning beachball) everytime I try to connect the old Touch. Auto sync is turned off. I've even tried to create a separate account to no avail. As soon as I disconnect the touch, iTunes resumes normally.

Plan B -- if i want to start over, do i reinstall iTunes? do i reset my iPhone? do i switch the SIM card from the old iPhone to the new 3G? my 3G currently just gets stuck syncing contacts. if i turn contacts syncing off then it'll get stuck syncing calendars. if that get unchecked then it'll get stuck syncing mail stuff . . .and then bookmarks, etc. if i turn off contacts, calendars, mail, and bookmarks then the sync happens just fine with music and ringtones and other stuff.

Upgraded from 1st gen to 3G iPhone

i went to the apple store and bought a 3G iPhone last week. it took the place of my 1st generation iPhone. it works just swell.
but my first generation iPhone still connects to my iTunes and i can add movies i've rented from the iTMS. i can do everything with the old iPhone except make calls (no service). but it does connect to the home wireless network and it continues to get email and stuff like that. i don't believe it should still be synching with my iTunes account since i've replaced it. but never-the-less it's sort of like having an extra iTouch for my kids to play with and they can watch movies on it and not borrow my 3G. but i digress.
my 3G syncs with the same account and it receives phone calls and all of that just fine. but every time i plug it into my computer it acts as though i don't have MobileMe set up. i click on the Info tab of my iPhone in iTunes and it has a button to set up MobileMe. i don't understand why. my MobileMe is turned on . . . and i get new email pushed to my new 3G iPhone. it's clearly working and clearly connected to my account. yet, every time i plug it in it wants me to set it all up again. i've set it up twice and i just checked all settings and everything is just as the directions indicate, yet i can't get the "Set Up Now" button to go away -- and the button just takes me to Apple's website to a tutorial anyway.
does this have something to do with my old iPhone still working? was the Apple Store supposed to take my SIM card from my old iPhone and put it into my new one? they didn't, fwiw.

I've just upgraded from a 3GS to an iPhone 4. I succesfully transfered everything. A few apps needed updates, no problem I thought.
How wrong was I??! Its says I need to authorise my account as its been accesed from a different device, fair enough, I entered my details & it says my payment method has been declined. So I tried another account, different card etc same problem! I have money in both accounts, & Im not trying to purchase anything!!
This is doing my head in, apps need updates & I was fancying a few new ones but I cant get any. Can anyone help?

Are the photos that you are referring to part of a camera roll, photo stream or are they simply photos that you have synced from your computer via iTunes.

Upgrading from iPhone 3Gs to iPhone 4 problems! Help!!

My uncle sent me his old iPhone 4 since he got the 4S. I currently have an iPhone 3Gs. However, when I restore the iPhone 4 from the backup of my 3Gs, my number won't transfer from the 3Gs to the iPhone 4! What do I do?

No I didn't. I figured since my uncle upgraded to his iPhone 4S, his number would be gone from this sim card he sent with the phone. His phone service is gone, but the sim card still identifies with his number, and when I try to restore the phone from my backup, EVERYTHING transfers over, except the number. Is there a way to wipe the sim card clean, maybe?

Basic troulbeshooting is reset, restart, restore.
Has any of this been tried?
What about Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings?
Has the 4S actually been activated?
