Upgrading from 3gs to iphone 4 activation

The 3gs is my first iPhone. I am upgrading to the iPhone 4 tomorrow. Do I just take the sim card out of the 3gs and put in the new one? Then go through itunes to activate? Any advise would be helpful.
Thanks!

Hey SJF.
Thanks for your response, when I got my 3GS, I did it through itunes, but since since I had MM (now icloud) I thought I'd try this way with my 4S. And I was surprised it was easier way to do it.
Now do I really need to connect my 4S to my computer for it to be sync with itunes or not?

Are the photos that you are referring to part of a camera roll, photo stream or are they simply photos that you have synced from your computer via iTunes.

  • Upgrading from 3GS to iphone 4S

    Hi all,
I just upgraded my phone from 3GS to 4S, and and I want to give my old 3GS to a family member of mine so they can use it with there number. I have already moved my number that I had over to the 4S and moved all my info over via iCloud it was pretty simple to do if you ask me. But I do have a couple of questions though.
    1) What is the best way to wipe the phone, either on the phone or via itunes on their computer?
    2) What's the best way to backup your phone, icloud or itunes?

  • Question about transferring data from 3GS to iPhone 5

I upgraded from 3GS to iPhone 5.  Before reading any articles on transferring data through iTunes, I configured my 3 email programs, contacts and calendar (Google).  The Apple instuctions state that I should backup 3GS FIRST, then restore to iPhone 5.  Question is, if I do the backup and restore AFTER having configured my mail programs, will that cause problems, such as creating duplicate accounts and contacts?  I am especially concerned about creating duplicates in my contact list, which would be a semi-horror if I had to delete every other one of over 1,700 names.  Perhaps I should delete my email accounts and contact list BEFORE restoring to my iPhone 5, basically start from scratch?

When restoring the device, whatever is currently setup on the device is irrelevant.  Everything currently setup on the device will be erased.

  • Somehow gained 6GB of storage in transfer from 3gs to iphone 4

I switched from 3Gs to Iphone 4. Both are 32gb. I downloaded new OS and am using current itunes. I updated all apps and then backed up 3gs. I then activated Iphone 4 and restored from backup. The number of apps, music, photos and videos are the same between 3Gs and 4 under usage. Somehow I now have 6 free GB in my iphone 4 where my 3Gs was almost full. Everything appears o be working fine but I feel like 6Gb is a pretty large discrepency between two phones with the same amount of data and I am worried about trouble down the road before i lose my 3Gs backup. Anyone run across this or have a good explanation? I appreciate the help.

Plug your 3GS in and see how much space each thing is taking, then plug your iP4 in and compare. Woulda' been easier than posting.

  • Upgrade from 3gs to 4s ? Sim card

Anyone know how Apple deals with upgrading from the mini SIM in the 3GS to the micro SIM in 4 and 4S?
If I have a 3GS with it's old mini-SIM in it and pre-order a 4S from Apple for home delivery, will the new phone have a new micro SIM in it when it comes?  Will I need to deal directly with AT&T to link the new SIM to my old account/line, or does the activation process automatically do that?  Or might the 4S come SIMless, leading me to take the old SIM and cut it down to Micro-SIM size?   Anyone with experience from the 3GS to 4 upgrade have any light on the subject?
    Thanks.

As always - you should read the boards before posting:
    From other threads:
"The ATT carrier locked iPhone ships with a SIM card pre-installed.
When activating the new iPhone with ATT, your existing iPhone and SIM card will be deactivated at that time."

  • Need help: Debeating updating from 3GS to iPhone 4

Hello, all. I'm sure I'm not the first to have asked for help on this but I am debating upgrading from my iPhone 3GS (1 yr old this month) to the iPhone 4. I checked and I am eligible for the early upgrade so the cost for the 16GB is not much of an issue.
Here is my main concern: the network signal. In my house and in many other indoor locations, I am lucky to get 2 bars of AT&T service and most of the time have "Searching . . ." or "No Service" in that upper left corner. From what I understand, I am not the only one with this issue and it appears to be an issue with all iPhones across the AT&T network. I see that the iPhone 4 has a new antenna design that supposedly resolves this issue. Of course, the phone isn't out yet *but has there been any word on whether the signal is vastly better on the iPhone 4?*
I don't want to sign up for a new 2-year contract on a phone and have the same issues when I could just tough it out with my 3GS for another year or less until Apple FINALLY brings the iPhone to Verizon.
On a related note, does the early upgrade promotion only apply to pre-orders and/or to a small window of time after June 24th? I'd like to wait and see what new users think of the signal strength and antenna on the iPhone 4 before making that leap.
Any help you can give would be appreciated. Thanks!

From what I understand, I am not the only one with this issue and it appears to be an issue with all iPhones across the AT&T network.
This is not an issue with ALL iPhones - with each and every single iPhone sold to date in the U.S. across the entire AT&T network.
There isn't a single carrier that guarantees reception when inside any building or structure. CDMA networks and phones are somewhat better in this regard, but can have the same problem depending on the building structure along with other factors. Up until a year ago or so, I had a business phone with Verizon which I carried with my iPhone. Had 1-2 bars of reception with Verizon at my house and I had to step outside in the back or front yard to ensure a call wasn't dropped. The same at my former office - had 4-5 bars of reception but there was something about the the building structure that was not good with Verizon's CDMA network and/or with my phone. Verizon's old "can you hear me now" commercials were most appropriate since I was saying that a lot with Verizon.
Didn't have the problem at both locations with my iPhone and AT&T, so I ended up having my Verizon number forwarded to my iPhone.
I don't believe there has been any word on if reception is vastly better or if any better with the iPhone 4 and the new antenna design, but I seriously doubt it is worse. More than likely this will be an improvement, which may be vastly better for some, or only a little or marginally better for others with a number of various and varying factors that affect this.
I don't want to sign up for a new 2-year contract on a phone and have the same issues when I could just tough it out with my 3GS for another year or less until Apple FINALLY brings the iPhone to Verizon.
You can return the iPhone 4 for payment credit less a 10% restocking fee if the packaging is opened within 30 days of the purchase data and cancel the new two year contract within the same 30 days with no penalty.
I'll bet you dollars to donuts the iPhone will not be with Verizon. Chances are slim to none that Apple would manufacture a CDMA phone for a single carrier only along with all the additional expenses associated with that vs manufacturing a phone for a single network that is the worldwide standard with the iPhone currently available in 88 countries for that reason alone.

  • Upgrading from 3GS to 4S - what's best procedure for transferring info?

i have an iphone 3gs and just got the 4s. What do I need to do to get the 3GS info onto my new phone? What's easiest? I haven't done anything with my new 4S and i have not upgraded the 3GS phone to the new software. Advice?

IF you've been syncing the 3Gs on a regular basis, including contacts to a supported application (address book on the Mac or Windows Address Book or Outlook on a PC) AND all of your media is in the iTunes library you normally sync to, AND all of your apps are in the iTunes library you normally sync to, then you should be able to plug the 3Gs in, back it up and sync it, Start up the 4S, go through the screens until you get the choice to Activate it and restore using iTunes, then plug it in. It should restore all of your apps, data and settings from the old phone to the new one.
BE CAREFUL. iOS 5 no longer displays the big swipe to cancel sync message when it's busy syncing with the computer. Touch the home button if the screen is dark and look at the top of the screen next to the signal strength meter. If you see 2 little rotating arrows, it's still busy.

  • Transferring data from 3GS to iPhone 5 without original laptop

My wife has a 3GS which was kept in sync with a laptop running xp. This laptop has died and she has just taken delivery of an iPhone 5. She can use my mac and would like to migrate from the 3GS to the iPhone 5. I have never done this before but my theory was to plug the 3GS into my iTunes and right click and complete backup. Once this is complete I was going to plug in the 5 and set it up as a new phone restoring the backup as I go. Is this the best plan or is that not possible ?
I presume she will need her own user profile setup on my mac so that she can have her own iTunes setup and not disrupt mine
    Any advice welcome
