Upgrading from 5 to 7. An Idiot's Guide needed

When I first got my Mac, it was just on the cusp of OSX. So it came loaded with OSX and OS9. The shop I got all the kit from set everything up on OS9 with Logic 5 working via OMS.
Now, this has worked fine (apart from a few lack of memory problems) but it's time to move on.
So, I upgraded to Tiger and I've bought the upgrade from Logic 5 (Big Box version) to Logic 7 pro.
Obviously I need more memory, although I'm not sure how much, but what are the practicalities to make sure it works when I first fire it up?
What happens to my old favorite VST's?
Virtual Guitarist, Groove Agent, Stylus,
My battered old Edirol Orchestral?
I write for TV regularly so I can't afford to have much down-time.
Please someone tell me it'll be OK....
Cheers
Rod

OMS was very popular for Mac OS 9 because it managed your MIDI ports and abstracted the software/MIDI relationship to where all we needed to know were the names of the ports, rather than port numbers and stuff like that.
Apple's CoreMIDI structure in Mac OS X is based on OMS (Doug Wyatt, the developer of OMS, works for Apple and has been the primary developer behind CoreMIDI).
If you are still planning to dual boot from OS9, you will use OMS there. However, as far as OS X goes, everything you need is built in and accessed from the Audio MIDI Setup utility.

  • Problems when upgraded from 3.0 to 3.2. Need help please!!

    Hi everybody,
I recently upgraded from 3.0 to 3.2. My 3.0 version was working perfectly fine.
    MY OS is win 2000.
    Database oracle 10.2.0
Oracle HTTP server installed companion cd.
The steps I followed to upgrade:
I unzipped apex 3.2 in a new folder called apex_3.2 and ran apexins.sql as sysdba.
I copied new images folder from apex_3.2\apex to HTTP_Home\Apache\Apache
    I then ran apxldimg.sql C:\apex_3.2.
C:\apex_3.2 is the base directory where I unzipped apex_3.2.
Then I restarted HTTP server and tried logging in apex page.
But the images are not proper, and I am not able to login. The browser says the page has errors.
    It says *'object expected'*.
Please let me know what could be wrong. What step I have missed.....
    The upgrade is very important.
    Thanking in advance,
    Deepika.

    Hello,
    apxldimg.sql is for EPG.
Does your image alias in dad configuration file correct?
What parameters you pass to apexins.sql script?
    Best Regards, Kostya Proskudin

  • Upgrading from Panter 10.3.9  to Tiger - Need Help

I am trying to upgrade from panter to tiger without success. My 12" powerbook G4 meets exceeds the system requirements and I have plenty of HD space, however the installation fails when verifying the destination volume. My friend suggested that I may need a firmware update to update the Bios for successful installation. I am not mac savvy and do not know what needs to be done. Can someone please give me a helping hand. Thanks.....

Here's the only really useful information on this error and what you can do to solve the problem:
How to Deal with a -9972 Error
    Contributed by Fumiaki Kawashima
The error message, "Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit (-9972)" is a serious filesystem error in the Mac OS X Core Foundation. The problem can also lead to other critical errors such as "Keys Out of Order," "Invalid node structure" and/or "Invalid sibling link." The causes and scenarios vary. Troubleshooting a solution may depend upon computer configuration and whether the -9972 error is accompanied by other critical errors. This issue can also lead up to a kernel panic. If the error occurs when an external FireWire device is connected, disconnect it until you verify the device's compatibility.
    Symptoms:
In most cases, you are unable to restart from Mac OS X.
    * A volume is grayed out or not mounted with or without a kernel panic.
    * A folder with a flashing question mark may appear.
    * A bad partition map may be reported.
    * A target disk mode solution may not work.
    * Most likely, Disk Utility, Norton Utilities, TechTool and DiskWarrior cannot fix the issues.
    * The high level disk format (Standard format) may unable to perform.
    * You may unable to re-initialize the hard drive.
    * A disk physically malfunctions in the worst case.
Example of an accompanied error message:
DiskWarrior normally fixes 1 to 6, but cannot fix errors 7 to 10 if the symptoms are very bad. There is no definite case.
    01. Volume check failed
    02. Invalid B-tree Header
    03. Invalid map node
    04. Invalid extents entry
    05. Invalid clump size
    06. Incorrect block count file
    07. Invalid node structure
    08. Overlapped extent allocation
    09. Keys Out of Order
    10. Invalid sibling link
    Related documents:
What to Do When It Finds an Error
Technical overview of disk volume structures
    Possible causes:
    * Third-party FireWire device or enclosure, or other peripheral devices.
    * Third-party mass storage drives or PCI card issues.
    * Incompatible third-party kernel extensions.
    * Mac OS X installer disc is improperly treated.
    Solutions:
If possible and needed, back up data before troubleshooting. Methods (4) and (5) are for Power Mac desktop computers other than G5 models. The best bet is method (4) if you encounter multiple bad errors.
    1. Unplug the power cord. Disconnect all third-party hardware except Apple keyboard and mouse before you start.
    2. Do NOT re-install any third-party software/hardware until you completely solve the issue(s) and carefully investigate the compatibility with Mac OS X 10.3.x you install.
    3. If another critical error "Invalid sibling link" is detected at any phases, disconnect and reconnect all internal power cords and data cables for hard drives and any ATAPI device. To do so, you may need to read the computer's CIP Instructions in advance. Normally, you do not need to remove third-party RAMs.
    Method 1:
    (1) Start up from Mac OS X 10.3.x Panther Full Install CD or DVD.
    (2) Re-initialize and re-partition the hard drive. RECOMMENDATION: Select "Zero all data" option if "Invalid node structure" or "Keys Out of Order" error is detected.
If this method is of avail, go to Method 2 or greater.
    Method 2:
    (1) Start up in Mac OS 9.2.2 and shut down the computer.
    (2) Start up from a copy of a Disk Warrior bootable CD for Mac OS 9.2.2.
    (3) Run DW to fix the damage(s).
    Method 3:
    (1) Unplug the computer.
    (2) Find a second ATA drive and jumper it as MASTER. Jumper the hard drive in question as SLAVE. Verify the jumper pin settings.
    (3) Install Mac OS 9.2.x system on the MASTER drive, and update it to Mac OS 9.2.2.
    (4) Start up from Mac OS 9.2.2. Re-initialize and re-partition the damaged hard drive with Drive Setup using the "Zero all data" option. Unplug the computer and reconfigure the jumper pin setting on the repaired drive for MASTER and the second drive for SLAVE.
    (5) Restart from Mac OS X 10.3 Panther full install CD. Re-initialize and re-partition the repaired drive to install Mac OS X 10.3. Update to Mac OS X 10.3.7 via Software Update. Repair the disk permissions after each Mac OS X 10.3 installation and Mac OS X 10.3.7 update.
You may want to try starting up from Mac OS 9.2.x Full Install CD instead of from (2) to (4).
    Method 4:
    (1) Find a desktop computer that has an ATA controller PCI card (SCSI environment) and has two hard drive bays. This will make your damaged drive appear as a quasi-SCSI hard drive. Mac OS 9.2.2 must be pre-installed on the computer. I recommend a host computer that installs an Ultra DMA/xxx or xxx (ATA-x) interface equal to or better than the damaged drive with backwards compatible.
    (2) Set the host computer's primary drive as MASTER and your damaged hard drive as SLAVE and install the damaged drive in the second drive bay of the host computer. Verify properly configured jumper pin settings in advance.
    (3) Start up the host computer from Mac OS 9.2.2. Launch the "Drive Setup" utility. Re-initialize the damaged disk on the second drive using the "Low level format" option. It may take hours but less than "Zero all data" option. Note: Normally, a low level format with a quasi-SCSI drive takes much less (30 - 40%) time than an ATA configuration drive. Note that "Low level format" fixes all difficult logical damage.
    (4) Put the fixed disk back in your computer's drive bay. Re-configure the jumper pin setting to MASTER before you place it into the drive bay of your computer.
    (5) Restart from Mac OS X 10.3 Panther full install CD. Re-initialize and re-partition it to install Mac OS X 10.3. Update to Mac OS X 10.3.7 via Software Update. Repair the disk permissions after each Mac OS X 10.3 installation and Mac OS X 10.3.7 update.
Note that Panther's Disk Utility does not implement a "Low level format" option.
    Method 5:
If Method 4 does not work or fix the damaged drive, let me know. You may need an advanced technique to fix it if the drive is physically not a problem.
    OPTION:
Purchase a known good hard drive that conforms to your computer's ATA specification. Fix the damaged hard drive some other time. Nowadays, prices of hard drives are inexpensive.

  • I'm looking for Apple desktop P.C. as an upgrade from my Dell /windows XP. I need  guidance.

I currently use a 6 yr. old Dell Vostro 200 (Windows XP). I want to upgrade to an Apple desktop PC. I need guidance to a product. Are any peripherals compatible (ie. screen, printer, Maxtor hard drive)?

Almost all  peripherals are compatible. I'd recommend reading https://www.apple.com/support/macbasics/  and if you have an Apple Store in your general area stop buy and ask questions. You were not specific as to what screen, printer etc... that you want to use with the iMac and that is all important so you can verify they are compatible.

  • Idiot's guide needed...streanming music

Would like to stream music from my Mac to home theater, as well as internet radio.
If using an AXpress, how do you control the selection to be played ?
Does the computer need to be running? iTunes open?
    thanks, folks for any info.
(the Mac is connected to a router with wireless capabilities. And I use the wireless to connect my laptop to internet.)

Hello D Bruce. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Would like to stream music from my Mac to home theater, as well as internet radio.
You'll be able to stream audio files, but not movie audio, from iTunes to the AirPort Express Base Station (AX). To stream movie audio & other audio sources not available from iTunes, you will need a third-party solution, like Rogue Amoeba's Airfoil.
If using an AXpress, how do you control the selection to be played ?
Song selection would be controlled through iTunes.
Does the computer need to be running? iTunes open?
Yes, and yes. iTunes, uses AirTunes, to both connect and stream audio to the AX. iTunes would have to be running for this to work ... or if using Airfoil that would have to be running instead.

A good processor HSF is more important than fins on the memory sticks. I normally suggest Thermalright U-120. If it fits I don't know.
    NOCTUA NH-U12P is another idea.
    Xigmatek Dark Knight S1283V.
Its basically the same thing as those two but only costs around $50.   Got it on my Phenom II now!  Check my review thread with the pictures of it on my K9N2 SLI Plat.

  • Upgradeing from 8.1.6.0 to 10.2.0.3

    Hi,
I have a Database in oracle 8.1.6.0.0 and I want to upgrade it to Oracle 10.2.0.3. It seems like there is no straight path upgrade to 10.2.0.3,
How can I upgrade it to 10.2.0.3, Can someone tell me what are the steps involved, I know export and import and even upgrading from one version to another. I need to know only the steps involved.
    Thank you

How to upgrade should be in the 10g docs.
In short you will have to install the 10.2.0.1 software, patch it up to 10.2.0.3 then upgrade the database. And you're probably better off going to 10.2.0.4, but there could be reasons you want 10.2.0.3
    Hope that helps ;)

    Hi,
How can I upgrade to 07.15.11.12?
CAM shows me only 06.60.11.11 as last firmware for this storage.
Another StorageTek 6140 are running with 07.15.11.12 and is in Ok-state, so CAM is up-to-date.

Ok, let's try to clarify things. The FW 06.xx and 07.xx are incompatible. The configuration database (DB) which is on the drives is different between 06.xx and 07.xx, that is why an upgrade from 06.xx to 07.10.xx.xx requires a special utility, why it should be done by Sun support engineers and why it can be done only offline. Today we cannot upgrade from 06.xx to 07.15, we need to upgrade to 07.10 with the special utility then CAM can be used to upgrade to 07.15. Any further upgrades within 07.xx can be done online with CAM.
If you move a drive from an array with 06.xx into an array with 07.xx, there is a special procedure in CAM Service Advisor. However moving drives from 07.xx to 06.xx isn't supported and won't work, this can even lead to issues.
The FW 07.xx includes bug fixes as well as new features (ie: volumes >2TB, Raid 6, etc...) whereas the FW 06.xx remains now a sustaining FW which means that there is only bug fixes.
The latest FW for both streams are:
    06.60.11.10 (for the 6130), 06.60.11.11 (ie: 6140, 6540)
    07.15.11.12 (6140, 6540)
    07.30.xx.xx (6580/6780)
The latest version of CAM is now CAM 6.2.0_14 which brings 06.60.11.10/11 and 07.15.11.12 and 07.30.xx.xx (I don't remember now the exact numbers for xx.xx).
If you install CAM 6.2.0_14 and have a 6140 running 06.19.25.xx, CAM will suggest you to upgrade to 06.60.11.11, it won't suggest you to upgrade to 07.xx because it knows that this requires a special utility and procedure.
If you have this array running 07.10, CAM will suggest you to upgrade it to 07.15.11.12 and this can be done online with CAM.
    Hope this helps

  • Does the Mountain Lion upgrade include the upgrades from Lion?

I was wondering if I should update to Mountain Lion, and I was wondering if it includes the upgrades from Lion as well?

You only need one OS. I'd use Mountain Lion, but you should first figure out if you have any old programs that are not compatible with either Mountain Lion or Lion.
Old PowerPC programs will not work on Lion or Mountain Lion.
To view which programs you have that are PowerPC, hold down option key and select System Profiler from the Apple menu. Then, select Applications in the Software section. Click on the Kind column header to sort by kind. Look for programs that are PowerPC. Those won't work. If you need them, don't upgrade.
Additionally, Roaring Apps has compatibility information for other software: http://roaringapps.com/apps:table

  • Planning upgrading from t3i

Hey guys!So I've had my t3i for a while and I think I'm hitting the limitations in the t3i in terms of what I'm doing now. I've had the camera for about 1-2 years (was given to me as a xmas gift) and up until now, I've done automotive photography, nature photography, as well as portrait photography. I thought that the T3i was already a good enough camera for me to suit my needs but I realized I might need more now but I'm not sure. One night, I was doing rolling shots with a few buddies of mine and noticed in post processing, that there was a ton of grain in most of the pictures if I turned up the shadows (was shooting in betwen 1/10-1/20th of a second at F8.0 at 3200ISO. What are the benefits of upgrading from a T3i or do I just need a better lens? I was thinking of going to either a T4i or a T5i but at the same time, I want to go for a full frame sensored camera but I don't know if the types of photography I'm doing right now require such an advanced camera such as the 5D MkII  or if the t4i/t5i will be good enough. Also, do the lenses for the T3i work for the 5D MKII or do I have to purchase new lenses for it? I'm guessing the lenses for the T3i are compatible with the T4i and the T5i. Thanks!

If you "turned up the shadows" on these, they were heavily underexposed... which is pretty much guaranteed to make for a ton of noise as soon as you turn it up in post processing. SHOOT RAW AND AVOID UNDEREXPOSURE LIKE THE PLAGUE. To me your sample shots still look a bit underexposed (nore on that in a moment). In fact, it's often better to overexposure your images a little... I use +1/3 stop for 3200 and +2/3 stop for 6400... then pull the image brightness back down in post processing. This minimizes noise, rather than amplifying it. I hope you don't mind... I took one of your images into Photoshop, lightened it a lot and increased the contrast... then applied Noiseware noise reduction (same "formula" that I use with my 7Ds when shooting at ISO 3200)... then resharpened the image a bit. Normally sharpening will really increase the appearance of noise, which is why I didn't do any more until after applying NR. It improved quite a bit, I think. But would have been even better working from an original, full size RAW file that had not been so heavily underexposed. I also fooled around with the color balance a little.... But there are mixed types of light in the image so, I didn't go to far with this. If it were my image and I were spending more time optimizing it, I'd do a color balance on the main subject and foreground, then adjust the background separately. Anyway, here's the result...   Regarding underexposure... Do you have your computer monitor calibrated? The reason I ask is that most monitors are way too bright to work with photographs, leading you to make too dark images, to the point you don't realize how much you are underexposing them when shot. The first step in calibration is setting the monitor's brightness. When I first got my current monitor 3 or 4 years ago, I had to set it down to about 20% brightness for accurate prints.  Now, after several years use I still have to turn it down to about 50% or my prints and images posted online end up way too dark. I am afraid you might be disappointed with a new camera if you don't resolve some other things first. Don't blame the gear! As it is, you likely aren't getting anywhere close to the best possible high ISO shots out of the camera you've got now. ***********

  • Upgrade From Snow Leopard Desktop to Snow Leopard Server

I just installed Snow Leopard on my Mac Pro and it's running great! I upgraded it from 10.5 and it worked just fine for me. I was looking at the Snow Leopard Server and all the features it offers for the other Macs on my home network. My question is this: Can I install Snow Leopard Server on my Mac Pro without having to do a clean install? I have everything set up perfectly and I really don't want to have to reconfigure everything.
My other question is, besides the server software, is there any difference between the server and desktop versions? More specifically, am I still going to be able to use my audio creation/editing software and play the few games I have? Does the server strip out any functionality or is it exactly the same thing as the desktop version, but with added server tools?
Thanks in advance for your input!

    1. No, you cannot upgrade from Client to Server. You will need to erase and install.
    2. Generally, you can do the same things. It isn't exactly the same, even ignoring the server tools. Are there some things that won't work? Maybe. Namely because developers don't typically code with MOSXS in mind.
My question to you is this: What do you want from MOSXS that you cannot do with the Mac OS Client? And are you set on using it on your Mac Pro?
    I ask because:
    1. Client does most of the thing people want to do that are "server" like.
    2. It isn't a good idea to mix server and production environments. OS X Server is typically easy to setup for basic operation, however, there will be issues and you will have to dig a little to get things working. Which means you will stopping and starting services, issuing terminal commands, modifying plists and .confs and rebooting. Sometimes it goes so wrong that you have to reinstall.
This is why if you are serious about a server, you should really consider a separate machine. The Mac Mini is a great option for a light duty server.
Also, carefully consider your needs. Can the things you want to do be accomplished with OS X Client and maybe a few web services. Not trying to sway you either way, but it isn't always as simple as "Click the Start button and the service is working."
