Upgrading from 7 to 8 on new machine

I currently have a G4 Powerbook (Panther 10.3.9) with Logic Pro 7, version 7.1.1.
I am going to buy a new Mac Pro; I would like to upgrade to Logic Pro 8.
Does Logic Pro 7 need to be previously installed on this system in order for me to
install the Logic Pro 8 upgrade?

I was puzzled too when I upgraded from LE7 to Logic Studio 8, since the installer didn't ask me for my LE7 serial. I just needed to type in the LS8 serial number. And I did buy the upgrade version, not the full package...
So I guess it MUST somehow verify if a previous version had been installed.
Has anyone tried to install the upgrade on a newly installed mac already?

My dad is upgrading from an old iBook to a nice new iMac. He has spent quite a few days tweaking his new iMac and importing old files and folders. The one thing we haven't yet done, though, is iTunes. He has an iBook G3 that he syncs his iPhone with, and he wants to be able to "move" his whole iTunes setup to the new iMac so that it picks up right where the iBook left off, without needing to reset the iPhone.
One thing to keep in mind is that the iBook had a tiny hard drive and thus the music files are actually on an external hard drive. I was wondering how to go about this feat. I read that using Migration Assistant deletes everything off the new Mac, so that's not an option at this point. Thanks for the help!

If you had use Migration Assistant to start with it would have been easier.

Procedure for installing CS6 upgrade from CS5.5 on new computer

Hello,
I am running Design Premium CS5.5 which was an upgrade from CS4. I am buying a new laptop. Can I install CS6 directly? Or do I have to install CS4 and then CS5.5 and then CS6?
Do I "deactivate" CS5.5 on the old computer first?

Hi Tony, you need not to install CS 4 and CS 5.5. You can directly install CS 6 on your new laptop.
It will ask your serial key for CS 6 and then it will ask the serial key for the qualifying product , in this case it will be the serial key for your CS 5.5.
And then it will start the installation.

Incase of upgrade there are two types of upgrade,
1. Unicode error upgrade.
2. Non-unicode upgrade.
What is the difference between SAP UNICODE and NON-UNICODE UPGRADE?
UNICODE: From Release 6.10, ABAP supports multi-byte coding for characters in Unicode. Prior to Release 6.10, ABAP used only character sets that were based on single-byte codes u2013 such as ASCII and EBCDIC u2013 or double-byte codes, such as SJIS and BIG5.
NON-UNICODE: This non-unicode error removal is just to replace any obsolete commands or function modules, tables such as, WS_UPLOAD, UPLOAD, etcu2026
I have not worked on UNICODE upgrade, so i could not be alble to tell you anything regarding that.

Upgrading from powerbook g4 to new mbp 15.4 i7 - ram & hardrive questions

Hi,
I am a graphic designer and I am currently using my powerbook g4 and it is running VERY slow, its time for an upgrade. I have decided that I would like the mbp 15in i7 with the anitglare display upgrade. The two other upgrades I have been trying to figure out if it is worth the money is the 4gs of ram to 8gs ram for $400 and the 500GB Serial ATA Drive @ 7200 rpm for $50.
I mostly use indesign, illustrator, photoshop and dreamweaver. I will also be updating my cs2 to the new cs5. I tend to run multi programs at once. I dont know how much a difference this $450 will make for what I do. Does anyone have any advice on whether it is worth it or not.

My recommendation would be to upgrade the internal HD but wait on the RAM upgrade. Here is my rationale, first try the new machine with 4GB and see if the performance is acceptable to you. If it is you are ahead if it isn't the RAM is user upgradable (and will NOT affect the warranty), the job takes 10 minutes at the most. Also RAM is currently expensive, however third party RAM is less than what Apple charges, not dramatically but about $40.
On the HD you are getting increased HD performance for a modest fee however the applications you will be using are not disk intensive so the performance increase will be very small. If you did decide to upgrade the internal HD at a later date (which also will not affect the warranty assuming you do it per the instructions) it would cost more than $50.

Time Machine Error when upgrading from old iMac to new iMac

Hi. I recently purchased the new 27" iMac and just completed migrating all data from an old PPC iMac. When I went to activate Time Machine and begin backing up on an existing 1TB Time Capsule, I received the following Time Machine error: "The backup disk image "xxxx" iMacG5 sparsebundle" is already in use."
Does this mean I need to go into Time Capsule first and delete the old iMac's sparsebundle before activating Time Machine on the new iMac? If so, is it safe to just drag the sparsebundle file to the trash?

No, you shouldn't have to do that, but you may want to if the TC's disk isn't well over twice the size of the data you're backing-up.
Most likely, all you have to do is eject the sparse bundle via the Finder.
A new feature in Snow Leopard will allow you to continue backing-up to the same sparse bundle. See #B5 in the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip,* also at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum.

Yes, but if there's nothing else on the Time Capsule, this will be much faster:
Use the +*Airport Utility+* app, in your Applications/Utilities folder.
Select +*Base Station > Manual Set-Up+* from the Menubar, then Disks in the tool Bar, then Erase.

Software licence issues when upgrading to Leopard with a new machine

Hi,
This is a question about my licence for Logic, but also on a broader scale, all my plugins and AU instruments etc. of which I have bought many.
I want to upgrade to Leopard (currently on Tiger 10.4.11), and realise that it's going to be a long and painful process to re-install each program/plugin etc. as I want to start from a clean Leopard install.
I also want to do this on a new MacBook Pro, but am wondering what kind of complications I'm going to run into when doing so. I can't just close one machine down while I transfer across the programs as I need it to work with, so I was going to prepare an external FW (or USB?) hard drive with Leopard, configure it and install all I need, and then clone that to my new MBP once I've got the money together to buy it.
Will this void the licence for Logic (and all my other programs) considering I'll essentially have two different machines with the same software? Is there an easier way to do this (particularly without installing each program again)?

You can run Logic on two different machines; just not at the same time. So there are no logistical (ha ha) problems from that point of view.
As regards the more general issue of copying over data…
There are applications such as Carbon Copy Cloner (shareware) which can make exact copies of your volumes, & there is Migration Assistant (part of OS X) that will allow you to move over the bits you need.
But if you are going for a clean install, you might prefer to do everything the hard way & re-install everything.
Personally, what I usually do is first a clean install, & then use my carefully-prepared back-ups to put everything from their previous locations directly into the corresponding locations in the new system. But this isn't recommended unless you really know what you're doing!
However, it does work perfectly for most things, as long as you take a few precautions & do everything in exactly the right order.
You can search in other Forums for lots of good advice on this type of move-over.

I lost my calendar data when upgrading from OS 8 to new OS 10

The OS upgrade worked fine. Upon opening iCal in new Mountain Lion, I don't find any of my calendar entries from before the OS upgrade.

I have the same problem migrating from a G4 iMac running 10.4 to an intel iMac running 10.6. Cannot even import calendar files exported from the old machine. Help!

Restore Iphoto library from Old HDD to new Machine (How 2?)

I crashed my MacBook Pro and have the HDD in ICYbox IB223 module.
With my new MacBook Air I wish to extract the old Library to th enew machine.
How do I do that?

Are you using the same user name for your account as you used to use on the old machine? Then you can simply copy your iPhoto Library using the Finder.
Connect the box to your new mac as an external disk.
Select the disk in the Finder and navigate to the folder where you stored your iPhoto library. Assuming you used to have it in the "Pictures" folder, open the folder "Users" on the drive, then "Your Home Folder", then "Pictures" and drag the iPhoto library to the folder where you want to store it. If you already created anew Library with a different name, rename the old library before you drag it to your Mac.
Then select the library in the new location and double click it to open iPhoto and point it to the library.
If you are using a different user name now than previously, you will need to set the "Ignore ownership on this volume" flag on the drive you copy from. This can be set in the info panal for the drive (File > Get Info").

Cannot install CS5.5 (upgrade from CS3) on my new laptop

I need to install CS5.5 on my new laptop. I downloaded the installation files, but i cannot install.
My CS5.5 Design Standard is an update from an CS3 Desing Premium which i purchased some years ago.
I do have the serial of my old CS3, but unfortunaltely i lost the installation dvd
Do i first need to install CS3? Or can i just put the serial somewhere?

First question: is your CS5.5 for Windows or Mac? Is your new laptop a Windows or a Mac? You cannot use a Windows serial number to license a CS5.5 on a Mac and vice versa.
Assuming you're installing on the same platform, there's no need to re-install CS3 first.
All you need to do is install CS5.5 (the code for an upgrade version is the same as for a full version), enter your CS5.5 upgrade serial number then enter your CS3 serial number when prompted.

If you drill down in that HT4972 article you provided, you will eventually wind up on the http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4946 article which says in part (under iTunes will back up the following information):
App Store Application data including in-app purchases (except the Application itself, its tmp and Caches folder).
You should be fine.

We have essbase license for 7.x Version, I want to know do we need to pay anything if we want to upgrade to new versions like 9.3.1 or 11.

The upgrade to 9 or 11 is not free. There are enablement fees going to 9 or higher. I suggest you talk to your sales rep to get the costs

Upgrading from Acrobat 5 to newer acrobat

I am a graphic designer and use acrobat all the time. I have just purchased a new computer with Windows 7 and have installed Acrobat 5 from the disc I had, it seems to be working but I'm sure a later version would be an improvement. Could you tell me how to update and the cost please.

You can get a 10% discount on the purchase of any newer iPod as long as you turn yours in at time of purchase... OTHERWISE, a better course would be to buy a refurbished nano from the online Apple Store.

Trying to upgrade from old mac to new. old mac can't find new mac in the migration program any suggestions

I purchased a new mac and am trying to migrate my hard drive from the old to the new. I follow the instructions, but my source computer can not find my target computer. The target has no problem finding the source. Any suggestions as to how I can get this done?
