Upgrading from 9.2.2 to either Panther or Tiger

I am needing to upgrade my iMac from OS 9.2.2 to either Panther or Tiger. I realize I need more memory, probably. I have 7GB available on my hard drive. Which would be best for me?

craftymac, with your 400 MHz G3 processor you are at the bare minimum for QuickTime 7 and below the minimum for iTunes 6 so you should probably not go beyond Panther 10.3.9 and if you don't have built-in FireWire that's another reason not to go to Tiger. It sounds like you have a slot-loader so you'll need to update the Firmware if you haven't already done so.

  • Upgrade from Mac OS X 10.1.6 to Tiger 10.4

I'm looking to upgrade my iMac's (G4 700Mhz with 1GB SDRAM) old OS X 10.1.6 (first OS X edition) to the Tiger 10.4. Now I've seen an upgrade disc for sale on eBay and wondered if this would do the trick? Or do I need to upgrade to Panther and then Tiger? Any help is much appreciated.
    TIA.

Gray color installers are machine specific & won't work on you iMac. They were provided by Apple during the tramnsition from Panther to Tiger.
You can upgrade directly to Tiger 10.4 if your iMac meets the Tiger requirements.
Tiger install DVDs are in short supply. Tiger is no longer available from Apple. For other sources, do a Google search for MA453Z/A (10.4.6), MA190Z/A (10.4.3) and M9639Z/A (10.4) . Also look on eBay. Be sure & buy a retail version (black with silver X) and not a model specific version (gray). Expect to pay (possibly a lot) more than the Apple list price of $129.
Also check this web store http://www.lacomputercompany.com/cgi-bin/rpcart/index.cgi?command=dispitem&type= sku&sku=19521
Possible Alternative if you are currently using Panther 10.3 – Do a Google search for Tiger 10.4 Upgrade DVD . It will upgrade your 10.3 to 10.4, but it doesn’t contain the full retail Tiger installer. Should be cheaper than the retail Tiger install DVD.
After you install the base 10.4.x, update to the final Tiger version 10.4.11. Here's the link for the 10.4.11 combo update http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24901?viewlocale=en_US

When you upgrade the OS, do it via Archive & Install. See About the Archive and Install feature http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1710
Be sure to select Preserve Users & Settings. Also, repair permissions before and after the install.

  • Please help, need to upgrade from 9.2.2 to osx 10.4 Tiger on imac g3 400 dv

Hello, I would greatly appreciate assistance to upgrade my operating system from 9.2.2 to osx 10.4.10. I have gotten the firmware upgrade installed to 4.1.9. Can anyone tell me what else I need to upgrade to have this computer able to install Tiger 10.4, on an imac g3 400 dv slot loading.....
Right now when I try to install the disc 10.4 using the option key at restart, it wont load the install disc. Any help would be appreciated , thank u in advance!!!!!!!

Hi, thank u for responding, my harddrive is 10 gigs, and my memory ram is only 64 megs, I ordered 2 512 mg from 18004memory.com and it didnt work , the computer said there was a memory issue. So I returned the memory back to 18004 memory.com...... I will neve ruse them again , because on their website they stated its guranteed to work and is compliant with imac 400 dv. They stated they will send me another set from another manufacturer, but to return the memory first.....
I know I meet all the requirements for tiger , except for the ram which apple says I need 256 mg,
But I was referring to any firmaware upgrades or bios upgrades or any of those type of programming upgrades to ready it for tiger, I know I installed the 4.19, and went from os 9.0 to its current 9.22, I think that alone was 5 upgrades. I think I might be missing an upgrade or maybe not. I will run the utility u posted and thank u for that.....
Apple told me that I can installl tiger 10.4.10 on this computer.
The install discs I bought on ebay state imac MAC osx install disc one and there is and install disc 2, it says AHT VERSION 3A127, and dated as produced in the year 2007. it colored grey , but doesnt have the black X like someone else posted it should have
Oh and it does open the files in 9.22, it does mount, and it does have folders,
Thank u for ur help as I progress to ultimately saving this imac....
    many thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Upgrade from 10.39 to 10.4 problem on a Power Mac G4

I'm trying to upgrade from 10.39 to 10.4 using the Tiger install DVD .
    - When I d insert the dvd, it immediatle pops it back out..
    - I tried transfering the dvd data on to a usb drive. When I did this, I cilicked on the "install icon" get the installation screen, click "restart" and the machine restarts in 10.39 with no installation screen.
    - With the USB drive, from system prefs > startup disk, I am given the option of 10.4, but when I select it and hit restart, nothing happens.
    Any help is appreciated!!

    Hi rickHutch80;
Your G4 is not capable of booting from a USB drive hence when the reboot starts it con only find the disk with Panther on it as the only bootable device. You need to use either an internal DVD drive or an external Firewire DVD drive so that the G4 can boot from it.

  • Can't upgrade from Lion 10.7.4 to 10.7.5.

I keep trying unsuccessfully to upgraded from Lion 10.7.4 to 10.7.5.  I keep getting an error that says to power down and restart after the upgrade.  Is there a work around for this?  I'm worried that my security updates aren't being done.  I also cannot upgrade from Lion to Mountain Lion either.  I have successfully restored everything from time machine backup several times.  Just can't update.  My MBP is a late 2008 5,1.  In an effort not to flood this forum, my specs are at http://pastebin.com/kCdgnG5T.
    Thanks,

I've tried the MacOSXCombo update with pressing the Option key upon restarting with no success before my first post here (then restored the whole system), but not the Shift key you're speaking of.  Do you feel this will make a big difference?

  • Intalling Panther or Tiger on an imac G3

    Hello,
I have a Blueberry color Imac G3 which was made in spring of 2000. I recently bought a new ibook and want to upgrade the older mac as my sister is now using it. I asked this ? a long time back but am requesting any further help you can give. The imac has 640 of ram and the Hardrive is 30 gig. There's almost nothing taking up any HD space and almost all is available. This mac is mostly used to surf the net. I do however want to install either Panther or Tiger on this unit. The person who responded before said to use a retail version for a full install. Also, would either Panther or Tiger work on this mac?
Lastly, what does the install involve??
    Thanks very much
    1bookG4   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

    omshanti:
I am not familiar with your computer, but it should easily support Panther, maybe even Tiger. Here are the basic requirements:
    -Macintosh with a PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor
    -Built-in USB
-At least 128MB of physical RAM
-Built-in display or a display connected to an Apple-supplied video card supported by your computer
In terms of installation, here are some suggestions to Archive and install. If you choose to do a clean install see note below:
    Panther: Archive and Install
If you do not have a Full Retail Version you can get one on eBay relatively inexpensively.
If you have the right disks here is what you do.
    1. Warning: Although we will use Archive and Install there is always a risk something can go wrong. As a precaution back up your User Folder and any apps you can't afford to lose.
    2. Check to see if you have the latest Firmware Update: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117
    3. Boot from the install disk holding down the C key.
    4. Once booted go to the Installer Menu and open Disk Utility.
    5. Run Repair Disk. If there are problems, run it until no problems are reported. If it reports that it can't repair the problems you might need TechTool Pro or Disk Warrior.
    6. While still in Disk Utility run Repair Permissions.
    7. Quit Disk Utility and open the Installer.
    8. Choose the option to Archive and Install. This saves your data in a Previous Systems folder, which you can retrieve after installation.
    9. You might want to Customize and deselect Foreign Language Translations and Additional Printer Drivers to save Hard Drive space.
    10. Proceed with installation.
    11. After installation is complete computer will restart. Open Disk Utility (Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility) and Repair Permissions.
    NOTE (below):
    To do a clean install:
Follow steps 1 through 4 above.
    a. In Disk Utility select your HD in left panel and Erase in main panel.
    b. Be sure Volume Format is Mac OS Extended and the checkbox Mac OS 9 Drivers Installed is checked.
    c. Select Options at bottom left in Erase panel. (Note: This procedure will erase the contents of your entire HDD. Be sure you have anything you want saved backed up.Select option to zero all data. Click OK. Click Erase. This process may take a while, so this is a good time to take a walk or call your mother
    d. After HDD is erased resume at No. 7 above.
Post back with any questions or comments.
    Good luck.

  • Upgrade from Panther to Leopard on PowerBook G4

    Hi-
I just bought Leopard (for $129 directly from apple) and am interested in knowing the steps I would need to take to upgrade from Panther (10.3.9) on a PowerBook G4 with the following specs:
    Machine Model: PowerBook G4 17"
    CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (1.1)
    Number Of CPUs: 1
    CPU Speed: 1.5 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
    Memory: 512 MB
    Bus Speed: 167 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: 4.8.4f1
I have 11 GB of disk space available.
Do I have the correct system requirements to make this transition seamlessly? Anything else I need to get?
    Thanks!

What's the difference between getting an external hard drive vs. the card? I'll definitely go with 160GB to be on the safe side.
See my reply in your other thread.
I keep reading that Archive&Install is giving people problems. Given my situation, would you recommend Upgrade or Archive&Install or Erase& Install?
I'm running Tiger and did not know that A&I was giving people problems on Leopard. If that's the case, I would definitely do the Upgrade (if that is an option like it has been on previous OSX installers).
My main thing is that I'm going to need to keep Office 2004 (which I learned should work on Leopard).
Given that, use the Upgrade method.
Unless... this may sound silly, but can I save it on disks or something? (I don't have the original install disks anymore).
That's not silly at all, and with some applications it will work. I do not know if that's the case with Office, but I would recommend against it. OSX often needs to "weave" parts of an app into itself via the installation, and copying the actual app will not do that. If you have a disk image of the installation disc, that's a different story, and it will copy/work fine.
Also, when I do the backup (via Super Duper?), where does all the stuff end up living? If it's on my hard drive, doesn't that get taken away when I replace it with the newer/bigger one?
I use SD and think it's the best cloning app out there. You need to save it on an external source, otherwise you're correct, it's still "living" on your PB's HD, and if you erase that HD or something happens to it, all that data is gone.
In your situation, I would consider either an external HD or an enclosure. With an external, you'll be able to use if for backups, which would be a very good idea if you value your data. 300GB and even larger can be found for under $100. I'd recommend a FireWire model, so you can then boot your PB from it if you want/need to.
If money is an issue and you choose not to backup (a bad idea, as all HDs eventually die), you may get an external enclosure. Install the new HD in it, SD/clone your PB's internal HD to it, install the new HD in your PB, and you're good to go. 2.5" enclosures can be purchased for under $10.

  • Upgrading from Panther to Leopard tips?

Hi, I'd like to upgrade from Panther 10.3.9 to Leopard, ideally the newest version.  I have an I-book G4, 1.33GHZ, currently 512 MB RAM and 30.98 GB available disk space.
First question, is 512 RAM enough, or would it be important to get additional RAM for best performance?  I think the most I could upgrade to with this computer would be 1.25 GB RAM.  Or would it be better to get Tiger instead?  What's the worst that could happen if I run Leopard with only 512 MB RAM?  Computer slowing down?  I would mostly use it for web surfing and writing with Word 2004, so nothing complicated.  Thing is, I wouldn't want to spend too much money on this old computer, and more RAM would be another 30$ at least.
Also, is there any upgrade version that might be cheaper to buy than the full retail version?  If so, what is it called?  If I get the full retail, are they all the same and should I basically be safe with any disk that has the large "X" on it (as opposed to the gray disks that might only work for specific computers)?  Not all sellers offer the whole box, which is fine, I really just need the disk, but I want to make sure I'm getting the right thing.
Do you know of a good place to get Leopard for a good price?  Is it generally safe to buy a used disk?  I would only need it for this one install, don't care if the disk is dirty, as long as it works.
I still have the Leopard disk from my I-mac, is there any way to install Leopard from that disk, or is full retail the only option?

Leo uses more resoueces, especially Video card relaed...
    Tiger Requirements...
To use Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger, your Macintosh needs:
        * A PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor
        * Built-in FireWire
        * At least 256 MB of RAM (I recommend 1GB minimum)
        * DVD drive (DVD-ROM), Combo (CD-RW/DVD-ROM) or SuperDrive (DVD-R) for installation
        * At least 3 GB of free disk space; 4 GB if you install the XCode 2 Developer Tools  (I recommend 20GB minimum)
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1514
I still have the Leopard disk from my I-mac, is there any way to install Leopard from that disk, or is full retail the only option?
Sorry, no, it's Intel & machine specific.
main thing for her would be access to internet (being able to watch basic videos online, mail, search, see all photos on a website.
In the end, not much differences as far as that, both are outdated... but I use both daily on the Internet.
Do you know if the old AOL software would work with either Tiger or Leopard?  My mother still uses that and is used to it, although I might be able to get her to just check her e-mail on Safari in exchange for better internet access.
No idea, but AOL became irrevelant decades ago, Apples Mail App can be setup in 10.4/110.5 to access most anything, & theres better/safer Browsers in eithere OSSX...
TenFourFox is the most up to date browser for our PPCs, they even have G4 & G5 optimized versions...
    http://www.floodgap.com/software/tenfourfox/
I'd avoid vesrion 24 though, as it no longer supports plug-ins like Flash.
SeaMonkey seems pretty fast also, with many options...

Might also look into iCab & OmniWeb versions.

  • I am trying to chose an upgrade from iPhoto to either lightroom or photoshop elements 10

I am trying to chose an upgrade from iphoto to either lightroom or photoshope elements 10, and would appreciate any comments/advice
    Thanks for your time
    Sandy

Elements and LIghtroom are different categories of app. Elements is a pretty straight up editor. Lightroom is database driven photo manager with lossless processing. Simply, Lightoom would be the upgrade to iPhoto.
That said, there is no upgrade path from iPhoto to these apps. You will need to export from iPhoto to the Finder - a process that means you will lose something of the work you have done in iPhoto already.
If your reason for upgrading is to add editing power then you can use Elements as an extenral editor to iPhoto:
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
If the Limitation you see in iPhoto is primarily photo managment then have a look at Aperture. Half the price of Lightroom, much better manager, complete with OS integration.
If you're shooting Raw then Lightroom or Aperture are the way to go.
You can set Elements as an external editor in either.

  • 3 issues after upgrading from Panther to Tiger

Hi, I finally installed Tiger on my Mac mini G4 and everything looked so fine... Until I find this issues:
#1: iTunes shows up a message saying that it needs 10.4.9
#2: QuickTime opens fine, but doesn't play video, only audio. Also some options of the menubar says something like "qtpSomething"
#3: Even that FTP works fine by "Go > Connect to server... > ftp://ftp.something.here", I can't connect to my PC by "Go > Connect to server... > smb://my.lame.pc.ip"
Actually, I think that installing the combo upgrade to 10.4.11 I could solve the #1 and #2, but #3 really worries me.
    This are my mini specs:
    • PowerPC G4 @ 1,42 Ghz
    • 1 GB RAM
    • 80 GB HDD
    • Mac OS X 10.4 (by now)
I moved from 10.3.9 to 10.4 via Tiger retail DVD and Upgrade Install. Any ideas?

Yeah... I've been through that once, a long time ago... My Panther stopped booting and I (in a moment "loco", apparently) reinstalled the Panther with the mini's disc with the Archive and Install option, messing out with my versions of iTunes, QuickTime, Macromedia Studio and Adobe CS. All solved just by reinstalling 10.3.9 and reinstalling Macromedia Studio (which has an annoying "invisible" that if is missing the hole studio won't work at all!).
Respecting to the main subject of the thread (?), I've downloaded the app you told me and worked perfectly. It extracted the Mac Help file and now the Help Viewer works better. Also, after I downloaded the QuickTime for Tiger the player repaired and now the menu says what it has to say.
I would say: "+Problema resuelto+". Gracias BD, you rock! =P

  • Upgrading from Panther 10.3.9 to Tiger 10.4.3

My brother has a 17" 1.8 IMac and wants to upgrade from Panther 10.3.9 to Tiger 10.4.3 so he can use Aperture, Apple's new software. Since I have always helped him in the past with his upadates, I prefer doing clean installs by reformatting the hard drive before doing a major upgrade like the aforementioned. Is this the preferred method or should I attempt to install over Panther without reformatting? I'm rather reluctant to go to 10.4.3 based upon the number of negative experiences reported by people who have done so, but if he wants to use Aperture, according to the system requirements needed to run it, he has to perform this update. What recommendations do any of you have for making a safe migration from 10.3.9 to 10.4.3? In other words, what is the best and safest method of updating?
    G5 2.3   Mac OS X (10.4.1)

    Tom,
Don't forget this forum is the hospital ward. Don't let the preponderance of bad reports make you think an update is bad. These are usually cases where people haven't taken the proper precautions while updating which should always be taken.
Mac OS X doesn't technically have a clean install option. For reasons why I say not, see this user tip:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=607614
The best method of upgrading depends on how well the machine is functioning in 10.3.9. If it has sufficient space, sufficient RAM, has not had any kernel panics, the following sequence of steps is recommended:
    1. Backup your data.
    2. Make sure all your hardware and software has compatible drivers for the operating system you are going to. Verify all the applications you are going to use are updated.
    3. Dismount and disconnect all third party peripherals.
    4. Upgrade and install to 10.4 with a retail 10.4 installer disk. Do not use a system specific disk on a different machine. Buy the box family or single user pack from an Apple software reseller.
    5. Repair permissions with Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility
    6. Run the 10.4.3 combo update:
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosxupdate1043combo.html
    7. repeat step 5.
Do steps 1 and 5 before and after any update as a general practice in anycase. Application installers often have a tendency to want to mess with permissions and sometimes don't put them back causing problems later on.
Now if you are having issues launching specific programs, or programs unexpectedly quitting now, or 4 language screens those need to be isolated before you update.

    1. Check to see whether you're fully patched (the latest release is 12.0.4 - you need to install the patches in order).
    2. Use the RGB option instead of the CMYK (unless you are creating output for press production).
