Upgrading from 9.2 to OS 10.3. Does that skip a step?

In my studio, I've got a G4 running OS9.2. I'm wanting to upgrade the software to OSX. The latest supported version of Pro Tools is 6.4.1 and that runs on OSX up to 10.3. I'd like to just go straight to OS10.3, but will there be a problem skipping 10.1 or 10.2?
Kind of a rookie question, but every apple I've ever bought has been pre-installed OS's.
Thanks in advanced.

You can go straight to Panther 10.3 or Tiger 10.4 (probably best). You need to check that your Mac meets the requirements.
Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger system requirements
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301341
OS 10.3 Panther requirements
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106163
Tiger install DVDs are in short supply. Tiger is no longer available at the Apple Store but is still available for $129 by calling Apple Phone Sales @ 1-800-MY-APPLE (1-800-692-7753). For other sources, do a Google search for MA453Z/A and M9639Z/A . Also look on eBay. Be sure & buy a retail version (black with silver X) and not a model specific version (gray).
Also check this web store http://www.lacomputercompany.com/cgi-bin/rpcart/index.cgi?command=dispitem&type= sku&sku=19521
However, there is one intermediate step you need to check. You need to check if your Mac requires a firmware (Boot ROM version in System Profiler) update. Mac OS X: Available firmware updates
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117 If an update is required, the update must be installed (using OS 9) BEFORE you install OS X.
You can keep OS 9.2 on your hard drive along with OS X. That way you can still run OS 9 applications in classic mode.

If you purchased Lion for your iMac, just log into the Mac App Store from your MacBook using the Apple ID under which you purchased Lion and go to the Purchases page. You will be able to download and install Lion there.
searching the internet i found a link to upgrtade to 10.7
The only place you get get Lion is from the Mac App Store. If you found some other site, that was an illegal copy and almost certainly tied to someone else's Apple ID and hence unusable by you. If the link was just to the Mac App Store, see above.
As to the problem with synchronization to iCloud, that's not a 10.6 question, so I'd suggest you take up that specific issue in either the Lion or iCloud forums, providing full details, and someone there can probably help you sort things out.

  • I have upgraded from 10.5 to 10.6 and found that all folders/files/pics have pixelated (either white or black) patterns on them. But it turns out fine when i open up the affected files/folders/pics. And this phenomenon persists after updating software.

I have upgraded from 10.5 to 10.6 and found that all folders/files/pics in my disk drive have 'dotted' (either white or black) patterns on them. But it turns out fine when I open up the affected files/folders/pics. And this phenomenon persisted even after updating to the latest software. I proceeded to upgrade to 10.8 and updated the latest software thinking that this might resolve the problem but still stays the same way as it was. Could it be the Adobe flash player that is causing this problem? Please help.

    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion at the Online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
    Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase a redemption code at the Online Apple Store: OS X Mountain Lion. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. Use the code to redeem a download of Mountain Lion from the App Store. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.

  • Upgrading from 10.4.11 to 10.7. What are the steps and do I also need to pay for 10.5 and 10.6 along the way?

Hi. I wannt to upgrade from 10.4.11 to 10.7.
What are the steps and do I also need to pay for 10.5 and 10.6 along the way?
According to the 10.7 lion page on 'store' it says that you need 10.6 to use it does this mean I'm going to have to do 3 upgrades?
    Thanks

    Why do yoy want Lion/10.7???
Anyway, if your Mac meets the requirements you can skip 10.5.x, and even 10.6.x if you can afford to erase all your data.
    Snow Leopard/10.6.x Requirements...
    General requirements
       * Mac computer with an Intel processor
        * 1GB of memory (I say 4GB at least)
        * 5GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
        * DVD drive for installation
        * Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
        * Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and terms apply.
Which apps work with Mac OS X 10.6?...

It looks like they might still have it...

    If it's a core Duo & not a Core2Duo, then it'll only run in 32 bit mode.
    Lion/101.7 System requirements
        •    x86-64 processor (Macs with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Intel Core i3, Intel Core i5, Intel Core i7, or Xeon processor.)
        •    At least 2GB of memory[14]
        •    Latest version of Mac OS X Snow Leopard (10.6.8), with the Mac App Store installed
        •    At least 4GB of disk space for downloading[14]
Like Snow Leopard, Lion does not support PowerPC-based Macs (e.g., Power Macs, PowerBooks, iBooks, iMacs (G3-G5), eMacs).
Lion also does not support 32-bit Intel Core Duo or Core Solo based Macs. Rosetta is no longer available in Lion, which means Lion no longer supports PowerPC applications.

I upgraded from snow leopard to mavericks only to find that my backup files of all my CS3 indesign, illustrator, photoshop wo't run, how do I uninstall mavericks and get my old system back.  I retired from graphics a few years back but still have old clients I do work for and maintain files for.  Would not have upgraded if I had known of the incompatability.

If I have to load the same apple id on all devices to use home share, does that preclude each device from using a second apple id and does that constitute a separate Itunes db or something?

    Welcome to the Apple community.
Only one of your libraries needs to use your iTunes Store Apple ID for home sharing. Your other computers can use their own ID for iTunes, so long as they use the same ID as all of the devices on the network for home sharing.

  • I recently upgraded from Leopard to Snow Leopard and I noticed that I have more capacity available on the Macintosh HD. I checked my files and applications and they are still on my computer. Can capacity on the HD change after an OS upgrade?

I recently upgraded from Leopard to Snow Leopard on my MacBook and I noticed that I have more capacity on the Macintosh HD than before the upgrade. I checked my files and applications and they are still on my computer and nothing appears to be missing. Before the upgrade I had around 111 GB capacity with around 10.50 GB available on the Mac HD but now after the upgrade I have 119 GB capacity and 20.92 GB available. Can capacity on the HD change after an OS upgrade?

No, but the upgrade removed unneeded PowerPC code and changed the way free space is determined.

    lanceblack,
You know, I had seen your similar post in other forum with same issue. This itself is confusing for other participants including myself to keep track of forum discussion regarding same issue.
It would be nice if you keep your issue in proper forum in one place, less confusion for others.
Corky02 said better than I did yesterday. I am not quite sure why or what impresssion that you'd easily upgrade from try-out app into full-license. For many people are aware that what it means or what does this having to do with upgrading qualification with any applications. Why did you think you would get to upgrade that easily from trail try out app to licensed one?
I don't think the Apple's ads are misleading. I just think you got yourself confused. Sorry I can't help you. IF I am Apple employee, I would love to help you and get this resolved for you. I am just one of those participants helping others.
Once again, I am sorry that you get your view all wrong and lead into thinking that you are entitled to do so. But you need to understand that once if you had purchased a full license app from try-out app. Most people know what does that mean with try out app for the first time. And most people know that if they wish to purchase an application, this means purchasing a boxed (or electronic downloaded file) from Apple retail store (or online store). Plus, new venue at Apple offering Mac App store. I think that is a little confusion for some people who are not familiar with the difference.
I do believe that if you purchase from Mac App store, it doesn't require to put in license serial number. I think it is a different approach for some reason. I had bought some other Mac apps (not Aperture) from Mac App store few times. I haven't purchased Aperture updated version straight from Mac App store online. I bought mine from Apple retail store in Canada in person.
I still don't understand why you still think Apple is misleading you all the way. I don't think it is. In case if you haven't notice... there is way for you to get in touch with Apple called Apple Support Express Lane. Give it a try.

  • HT4759 so how do I upgrade from a Mac 10.6.8 to one that supports icloud?

    So how do I upgrade from a Mac 10.6.8 to  a OS X V 10.7.4?

If your Mac does not meet the requirements for Mountain Lion you may be able to upgrade to Lion. The requirements for Lion are:
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
    2GB of memory
    OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
    7GB of available space
To purchase it you will have to ring Apple at the number given at the bottom left of this page.
You should be aware that PPC programs (such as AppleWorks) will not run on Lion or above; and some other applications may not be compatible - there is a useful compatibility checklist at http://roaringapps.com/apps:table

  • Upgrade from 4 to 5 however experiencing technical faults that I've never seen? At only 1 1/2 month old will apple serve me right by exchanging the product?

Just upgraded to iPhone 5 love the product however not the quality of the handset I have. The iPhone 4 served me well with not one problem throughout. Got 5 and I'm a little disappointed. There is a rattle that sounds as though something in the phone is loose. However my friends do not do this??? The camera when active sometimes has purple lines across the screen as though it malfunctions then quits?? The phone sometimes turns itself off after charge then says its out of battery? When I lock the screen sometimes it will just take screen shots as though the buttons are sticking? I'm now having doubts about the product or is it simply because on demand they were expected faults in some and I've been unlucky? The question is will apple exchange my handset under warranty as its not personal damages and clearly manufactural problems? Ease restore my faith in a much loved brand and product! Karl

The iPhone includes a one year warranty.
Every warranty claim is on a case by case basis and Apple makes the determination if an iPhone is exchanged under warranty if it is determined there is a hardware problem.
Did you transfer the backup for your iPhone 4 to the 5? If so, have you tried restoring the iPhone with iTunes as a new iPhone or not from the backup?
If no change after doing so, call AppleCare or make an appointment at an Apple store if there is one nearby.

  • Upgrading from 2.0.1 to 2.1 (i.e. skipping 2.0.2)?

I've been monitoring the forums with the express intent to gather data in helping me to decide if/when I should upgrade my iPhone 3G. I am currently running iPhone vers 2.0.1 and using iTunes 7.7.1.11 on Windows XP. Plugging in my iPhone while running iTunes (again, 7.7.1.11), I am alerted of the availability of iPhone version 2.0.2. Should I attempt to upgrade to 2.0.2 BEFORE upgrading to iTunes 8 and then subsequently iPhone 2.1, OR should I just skip iPhone 2.0.2 and go straight to iTunes 8 and then iPhone 2.1? Anyone else confronted with that? Experiences? Suggestions?
    Thanks!

Thank you for the swift reply. I assumed firmware was in "totality" -- not incremental. I also expected that moving to iTunes 8 would likely only present iPhone 2.1 without any mention of 2.0.2. That said, I just was seeking assurance that the 2.1 upgrade process didn't depend on some data-formatting issues -- again, iphone DATA. I can envision that there may have been no data migration/change issues (e.g. contact or calendar databases) at all from 2.0.1 to 2.0.2, but that certainly doesn't rule out entirely that there may have been. I'm merely treading forward very carefully considering, as best I can, all potential areas of failure and attempting to minimize my risk exposure. From reading these forums, I've formulated the opinion that Apple's QA team has been far less than thorough with respect to their test-matrix. While I realize that most people post only when experiencing problems and many may have been fortunate to upgrade virtually, if not entirely, free of nightmares, I am doing my best to join the class of the latter.

  • Upgrade from Bootcamp 3.0 to 3.1 does not work - error 2229

    Hi,
I´m running Snow Leopard and Win7 on my MBP 2008, each at 250GB HDD space. I installed both together. Before, I had Win Vista and Mac OSX Tiger installed and hardware worked in both OS´s. But I had to exchange my HDD and install everything from scratch. Ever since, I can´t use right click on Trackpad or Bluetooth properly in Win 7. In Snow Leopard, everything works fine.
I found out a couple of different ways trying to fix this, but nothing worked. Now I found the hint to install this here http://trackpad.powerplan7.com/ but this requires the previous installation of Bootcamp 3.1. Problem is that I have Bootcamp 3.0 installed (with bugs, as said before - meaning trackpad etc. is not working properly).
Anything I try fails - I can´t install single drivers from Bootcamp CD (it says it worked, but nothing happens), I can´t upgrade to Bootcamp 3.1 (still the error "2229")...
So I´m lost at the moment and try to always have an external mouse with me, that´s USB connected.
Does anyone here know better ?
    Thx,
    Simon

I dontknow if this will help you or not, ut back when the BootCamp v3.1 update came out, there were a number of people who could not get it to install. For many of them it was that they had a third-party software installed which added a display-adapter to their system (LogMeIn, etc.) If you have anything like that installed, try un-installing it first, then reboot, and try the bootcamp install. If that works, then you can easily re-install the other software again (although you may need to uninstall it again fr the next bootcamp update).
