Upgrading from a HDD to a SSD for the HP 15-g010dx

I was wondeing if I could upgrade and replace my HP 15-g010dx Notbook HDD to either a 128gb SSD or 256gb SSD to increase performance and battery life? Which SSD would be best compatiable with the HP 15-g010dx Notebook? What size SSD would I need? I was looking at either the 128Gb or 256Gb Crucial MX100 SATA 2.5 7mm with 2.5 adapteron amazon. Also would upgrade to a SSD for the HP 15-g010dx be worth the upgrade?

Yes an upgrade to an SSD is technically possible and would significantly improve performace, BUT. The laptop is essentially a "closed" system. There is no customer-accessible access door for the memory or the hard drive. It is necessary to remove the whole top cover in order to access the hard drive, remove it and replace it with a solid state drive. Doing so jeopardizes the warranty.

There have actually been a couple reported issues with recent HP laptops and the Crucial MX100 series which have not adequately been explained. My own suggestion is a Samsung Evo 840, but there are many good SSDs on the market.

Upgrading from 320gb hdd to 128gb ssd on Mac Pro dual boot.

I have a Mac Pro 2008 with a 320gb hdd and I want to convert it to a 128gb ssd. I have it dual boot from one drive partitioned 50/50. I was wondering how I should transition from hdd to ssd. The drive has less than 120 gb on it and the Mac Pro runs Mavericks and Windows 7.

Pop SSD into drive bay with adapter in FW800 drive adapter, use CCC to clone system and recovery partition.
As for Windows, it needs about 80GB at least esp. on an SSD. Use WinClone to make a restore image.
Samsung 840 EVO 250GB is $144 on Amazon and the 128GB is $80. I look at the 500GB $299 and think, "why not."
you could leave for now the slow old 320GB hdd for Windows and hold a backup for OS X.
Your system,either one actually, should only have OS and apps on boot drive, very little if any data, just 3-4GB for AppData or ~/LIbrary to hold preferences, mail and minimal data.

OCZ newer SDD's seem to be highly spoken of. Kingston just came out with new...and fast. Decent prices. The biggest you can afford that advertises around 500mb/s and you should be happy with any brand. You might search your cpu on Wikipedia. They have a good chart. Stick with same style and current. i7 run hot, maybe too hot.

From the response to this, and from reading several other threads regarding SSDs, I found that several Mac Pro owners are using OCZ SSDs as boot drives, and in some cases employing up to 3 of them.
I received my Agility EX from Aria on 16th. December, and yesterday afternoon I decided to set up my boot drive and 4 drive RAID 0, as described in: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2263023&tstart=0
First of all I used SuperDuper to clone from my VelociRaptor 300GB drive in Bay 1, to my original Apple (WD) 640GB drive in Bay 2.
Then I removed the original Apple drive, and installed it in an ONNTO dataTale TQ-M12H external single enclosure, using a Firewire 800 interface connection. Next I selected this as my boot drive to check it would boot OK, restarted my system, and there was no problem.
So my next step was to install the Agility EX, and another 3 VelociRaptor 300GB drives, in the Mac pro workstation.
First, I reselected VelociRaptor 1 as my boot drive, so that I could use SuperDuper to clone to the Agility EX.
The Agility EX was installed in the lower of the 2 optical bays, and was connected to the pre-wired SATA and power cable, and the VelociRaptors were placed in hard drive bays 2, 3, and 4.
I then started up the Mac Pro, and there were 4 message boxes on the desktop, requesting that the drives should be initialised. So then I used Disk Utility to initialise the 4 drives. The SSD was named "Agility EX Boot", and the others "VelociRaptor 2", VelociRaptor 3, and VelociRaptor 4". The Mac system accepted all 4, and mounted desk top icons for each drive. I cannot remember the exact figure, but the Agility EX was listed as approx. 64GB in Disk Utility after its initialisation. All 4 VelociRaptors are shown as 300.07GB. All drives were formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
The next stage was to use SuperDuper to clone from VelociRaptor 1 to the Agility EX Boot drive.
Everything was fine until 28.00GB had been copied, and then nothing more would copy. The total to be cloned was just under 30GB, which should not have been a problem with a SSD disk capacity of approx. 64GB, but everything was frozen at that point - exactly 28.00GB!
Eventually, my only option was to stop the process, and quit Super Duper.
Then I restarted the system to try again, but this is where there is a real problem now!
My system does not recognise the Agility EX at all now! Also, it is no longer listed in Disk Utility!
The system does not even acknowledge its existence! It is not even shown on the desktop at start-up, whereas I thought that perhaps there might have been another message box requesting that it should be reinitialised.
I tried disconnecting and reconnecting everything - all drives, interface connections, power cables etc., but to no avail!
This morning I tried this again, but still I cannot get my system to even acknowledge the Agility EX, let alone list it!
So at the moment I am still using VelociRaptor 1 as my boot drive, and, in fact, as my main drive, because I am reluctant to use it with the 3 other VelociRaptors as a 4 drive RAID 0 set up until I get this problem with the Agility EX resolved.

Cloning from a HDD to an SSD is very problematic. I strongly recommend against doing this. Instead you will want to just install normally onto the SSD. You can clone from SSD to SSD, or from HDD to HDD, but going from one to the other can cause issues.
Try disconnecting the drive from the computer for an hour or so. This will allow all power in the drive to fully discharge. This is a way of resetting the drive that can usually recover the drive. Then plug the drive back in. Does the drive show up again?
If so, delete the partition on the drive, then create a new partition and then install the OS onto it clean rather than clone the OS onto the drive. That should resolve the issues you are having.

I have now disconnected the Agility EX SSD, and removed it from my Mac Pro's lower optical bay.
As Christmas is imminent, and I will not be using my system very much over the next few days, I will leave the drive for 4 to 5 days to allow ample time for all the power to discharge.
Then I will reconnect it, and I will let you know whether or not the drive is recognised by my system.
I was not aware that cloning from a HDD to an SSD could be problematic. Several threads on the Apple Support Discussion Forum have recommended using SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner for this purpose. SuperDuper is the preferred option of most Forum members, whereas Lloyd Chambers (diglloyd.com), author of "macperformanceguide.com", uses Carbon Copy Cloner to clone his HDD boot drives to his Intel and Crucial SSDs.
After the Agility EX had been set up as my system boot drive, my intention was to use SuperDuper to clone from it to my original Apple (WD) HDD, now in an external enclosure with Firewire 800 interface, and then use SuperDuper's Smart Update for regular backups, so that I always had an up to date spare boot drive for the OS and applications.
The current VelociRaptor 1 boot drive would then be erased, and I would then use the Mac OS Disk Utility to create a 4 drive software RAID ) with the other 3 VelociRaptors, and this would be backed up using Time Machine to my existing WD My Book Studio Edition II 2TB External Hard Drive.
Please correct me if I have misunderstood your advice, but are you saying that I should only use another SSD, and not my original Apple (WD) HDD, as my back-up external boot drive? I don't know of any other Mac users who are using SSDs for that purpose, possibly because of the prohibitive cost of doing so.
I am more than happy to follow your advice to reinstall the Mac OS and my applications cleanly onto the Agility EX, and, in fact, I did exactly that with my first VelociRaptor HDD, before I had SuperDuper. However, that would still leave me with the problem of how to set up and maintain an external back-up system boot drive, without incurring the expense of another SSD. Any suggestions please?
Anyway the most important matter is the existing problem, and I am hoping that following your advice will resolve this.

If the image is of an HDD and that image is then cloned onto an SSD that does tend to be problematic. I do not recommend doing this, as an image of the HDD somewhat regularly does fail to copy onto an SSD and still remain functional or fast.
You can store the image file on any sort of drive. Storing the image file is fine, as that is just a digital file, so the storage medium doesn't matter. Its actually applying that image to a drive is where the problems often occur.
You can image from a HDD to a HDD just fine, or an SSD to an SSD just fine, but going from one to the other is problematic enough that I recommend not doing this. Sometimes it works just fine, but other times it can fail catastrophically to the point of even bricking the drive. To error on the side of caution I recommend just going a clean install on the new SSD.
Once you have that clean install done you can then take an image of that SSD and image on to other SSD's, or store the image on a HDD for backup purposes.

Further to your previous email, and my reply of 23/12/2009. this morning I reconnected the Agility EX SSD.
However, unfortunately, the drive has not showed up again on my system. There is no icon for it on the desktop, nor is it listed in Disk utility.
When I checked Serial-ATAS in my Mac Pro's System Profiler, all 6 Intel ICH10 AHCI are listed in the Serial-ATA Device Tree, but, whereas all my other drives are sub-listed, there is nothing underneath the ICH10 AHCI for the lower optical bay.
As the drive has had 6 days to discharge and reset, it would appear that it has not recovered.
Where do I go from here?
I am still awaiting a reply from OCZ, but that is not surprising, because of the different time zones and the Christmas?New Year holiday period.
In the meantime does anybody else have any ideas, please?

This is a copy of the log, but it only refers to the original Mac (WD) drive as the Target Volume and it only lists the last Smart Update. There is no record of the original cloning to the same drive on 21st. December, nor of the interim Smart Updates. There is no record logged at all for the OCZ Agility EX SSD, despite the unsuccessful cloning attempt on 21st. December:-

I have tried this several times without any success.

SuperDuper was the only program running when I cloned firstly to the Mac (WD) HDD, and secondly to the Agility EX on 21st. December.
Also everything was disconnected before I removed and transferred the Mac HDD to an external enclosure.

If neither iPhoto not IC can seethe card it might suggest an issue with the card or the ports on the camera/mac.
Try reformat the card, change the ports and/or use a USB Card Reader.

- Use the splice tool in PS6.
- Export the slices with "Save for web", as gif-files.
Then the dpi value is removed, the gif files has no dpi value (it's empty).

I implemented the backup plan I outlined above but have experienced an issue I can't resolve. For some reason, the OWC Elite AL Pro 1T will not boot with the FW400 connection even though it appears in the Startup options. I does not appear as an option when I hold the Option key on startup. If I connect via USB, it works fine and boots as expected.
So, I called OWC Support and they did not have a solution. I decided to return the OWC 1T and bought another 2.0TB (2000GB) OWC Mercury Elite Pro 'Quad Interface' 5900RPM 64MB Cache Solution with eSATA/FW800/FW400/USB2. The other one I bought cloned and booted just fine.
So now I am experiencing the same issues with the new 2T drive that I experienced with the 1T. Connecting via USB works fine, but connecting via FW400 will not boot. The drive is recognized in Finder and otherwise works as expected when connected via FW.
Anyone have any ideas as to solution?

Does upgrading from Premiere Elements 12 to 13 solve the Organizer thumbnail problem?

Thumbnails do not show up after importing clips into Premiere Elements 12 Organizer. I've tried right clicking on a clip and telling it to recreate the thumbnail but it doesn't work. I've tried refreshing and repairing the catalog. I've even started a new catalog and reimported the files. The system says it's creating thumbnails but they still do not show up. Does upgrading from Premiere Elements 12 to 13 solve the Organizer thumbnail problem?

That is one of those questions best answered by evaluating Elements Organizer13 with your specific files in your specific computer environment.
Each of the Elements Organizer versions often appears to carry along its own baggage.
One of the things that came up about Elements Organizer 13 thumbnails recently was a problem with files with MPEG2
video compression. The Adobe word on this was that this is only an Elements Organizer 13 tryout issue...supposed not to exist
in the purchased version.

[Lenovo Edge 11] Trouble migrating from a HDD to a SSD

Good evening everyone,
I'm currently owning a Lenovo Edge 11" Intel, which I wanted to upgrade by swapping the stock-slow-HDD by a brand new SSD and I'm stuck when I try to restore the factory image from a USB stick.
This stick contains the recovery image made with the ThinkVantage Recovery Media in the ThinkVantage toolbox.
First point : I didn't ditched the stock drive data, it is still able to boot the system.
Second point : I installed the SSD drive, plugged my USB stick with the recovery image, hit F12 and selected it... and nothing, just a message "error loading system".
I thought that my recovery image may contain something wrong (although I followed the assistant and left checked both checkboxes to create a bootable drive and copy the Q: partition), I fitted back the hard drive and tried to redo a system image. But the utility kicks me out as it tells me that I already made my recovery image.
What I am supposed to do now ? Thank you for your advices.

I'm not sure if your restore is working or not at this point...
In addition to setting the partition active, there seem to be some other requirements when preparing a USB flash drive to be recovery media. New or used USB memory keys or USB flash drives require an active partition created from within Wind...
I've seen cases where just setting the partition active after the fact was sufficient. Other cases where preparing a 2nd flash drive per the above link and copying the contents of the non-booting drive did the job. Other times when going through the whole process again was necessary.
If you still aren't able to run recovery from that flash drive, but can do the done.ini trick, go through that flash drive prep above, then make your recovery media.

Should I upgrade from Mavericks to Yosemite or go for a new install of Yosemite?

I just asked this, got an answer, but it shows as restricted. I can't access my question, so I'll repost. Dammit!
Macbook Pro 15.4” Retina, October 2012, 500g, 8g RAM.  In anticipation of the release of Yosemite, I have been ready to back everything up, screenshot all of my apps, print them so I can pick and choose after the install from where I have acquired everything. I am on a business scenario, not a typical home user. I use five external hard drives, so I can get it sussed.
  I am a Windows convert, I still Bootcamp Win 7 because of some Sony video software I need to use for business. Upper end Photoshop user. I will be installing Final Cut Pro X as a replacement for the video apps when everything settles. I have researched and see that my BluRay production will take a hit because I will have a learning curve and there seems to be a bug with Final Cut Pro X and BluRay production. I'm sure it will be resolved by the time I am ready to switch. No biggy. I will be cutting the Microsoft cord when that takes place. I'm just giddy over it. Seriously.  
What I want to know, and this is a very noob question, is, I want to erase and format my hard drive to accept Yosemite when it hits the release date. I want to go with a clean install rather than an update.
 To all of you seasoned and dyed in the wool Apple people, if you were two years into Apple as I am, would you install Yosemite, when it is released, as a stand-alone, fresh install instead an update install? I know it will wipe everything, but I want to build from the ground up as an OS install. Start over, as it sounds.
 Do you people think it an imprudent act to wipe everything and start over or a better idea to update with the Yosemite release over/on top of Mavericks?  I know there will be bugs. I dealt with the Mail bug in Mavericks, then they fixed it. I know there will be issues, there always are.  
Does it even matter?

There is no good answer anymore. All of the responses you have had in this thread are excellent. But Apple keeps changing the plan. I say wait until the 2nd minor release of Yosemite. The first 10.10.1 will be a bug fix release, probably within 3 weeks. The second will be a security update two weeks later. That is the point where it will probably be safe to install. You'll have a good 8 months of usage before having to worry about upgrading again. Also, this strategy applies to all releases, not just major ones. Apple doesn't do "bug fixes" like you may have been used to in the past. Builds 10.10.1, 10.10.2, etc. will be designed not to break any public interfaces, but that is as far as it goes. Otherwise, Apple is liable to change anything. The old adage "if it ain't broke don't fix it" simply doesn't apply anymore. Wait a week or two after each incremental update to see if there are big changes. Since you are a heavy Photoshop user, always check the Adobe forums before updating the OS.
