Upgrading from a MacBook Pro (2009) to MacBook Pro Retina - Which method is best?

I have just gotten my Retina MacBook and am about to migrate/tranfer files. I have not yet started up the new machine, so haven't engaged the intial sequence of questions asking for transfer.
Here are the three options I have been told...
1) Use the initial startup and transfer files from old machine - both have to be on the network (I have the ethernet/thunderbolt atachment) - but cannot be directly connected. However I have over 400 GBs on my present disk - and this could take a long time - some discussions have said this could be a 24-36 hour process.
2) Use Migration assistant - connect both directly through an ethernet cable. (might take less time)
3) Connect a (SuperDuper) clone copy - on initial boot - hold down option key to come up off the clone drive - clone over the disk to the new drive. (My concern here is that it is an older build of Lion 10.7.4 which will generate problems). (Take much less time)
Any thoughts would be most welcome!
Thanks

Use can use a clone with Setup Assistant also. As long as you have a connection the the drive when you start up (Firewire cables, usb cables, network connection, direct ethernet connection computer to computer).
The problem with migration assistant is that you can't migrate data to the same user. If you use it, create a different user when you set up the machine. Then, you can migrate your user account, and delete the original one later.
Easiest way is to just make your connection and use Setup Assistant when you first log in. Then you won't have to deal with the other problems which could result from improper copying.
You could also manually set up the new computer and create your settings as Shootist suggested. Manually add your outside applications back. You can copy your files and documents back manually from the external drive.
This might be the best method because you will not bring any orphaned settings or corrupt settings from the old system. But, it will just take you a little longer.

By memory, do you mean space on your hard disk?
If so, here is one resource:
Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk
Or do you really mean memory - i.e,, RAM?
In any case, what occurs that makes you think your "memory" is gone?

It will make it easier to help you w/ your problem to know the  size and RAM installed.
"Yesterday I couldn't update the maps on my Garmin because it said the OS I had wouldn't work"
What OS will your Garmin work with? Funny there was someone else that did that and upgraded to Yosemite and regretted it.
I'd say Lion if your Garmin is compatible.
Both Lion and Mountain Lion are downloadable from the Apple Store:

did the upgrade from win 8 to win 8.1 pro 64bit.
Printers were working fine but now are not recongnised and the spooler is not starting.
I reset the spooler on numerous occasions to no avail and ive downloade the latest drivers for the printer but no luck.
    Please assist asap.
    I have a canon lbp 2900  and a hp officejet 6500

I cant access any printers, not even the virtual printers.
What I would do is use ProcMon to find out why that Event entry was written.  Then I imagine I would get a clue about a .dll which might be involved, which hopefully might be registerable.  Since IE9 there have been new .dll  involving printing
which have not been reflected in any of our repair tools.  However, instead of modifying our old scripts to reflect this fact, I have been advocating, so far unsuccessfully, that Microsoft create a proper IE Repair tool, one which does not rely on such
unreliable techniques.   E.g. a better method of repairing would be to have it done by a proper troubleshooter (an .msdt file) but so far it seems nothing has been done in that way for these symptoms (again, assuming the cause is registry corruption
and not simple interference from now incompatible third-party programming--the fix for that would be to identify and remove the incompatibilities.)   For example.

  • Can't upgrade from Acrobat X Std to Acrobat X pro

    Hello,
I have Acrobat X std I purchased and d/l without problem months ago.  Today tried to upgrade from Acrobat X standard to Acrobat X Pro.  All seemed well until I ran the installation after downloading the files using the download assistant.  The installer window shows Acrobat X Standard in the top bar.  It will only accept my old Acrobat X Standard serial number.  It will not accept the new activation key or serial number.  I have completely uninstalled Acrobat X, gone back to the download area under my orders, and re-downloaded the file.  Same thing happens all over again.  Of course no support or help on weekend and I leave on a trip tomorrow.  Anyone have any ideas?  Thanks in advance.

OK, I got it loaded.  Not sure exactly, but I believe the tricks were to not use their automatic downloarder, delete it from my computer, to select the "overwrite" option when the manually downloaded installer found the previous files (which I had uninstalled, so not sure what the uninstaller left behind....) then of course once it ran, it prompted me for the Standard serial number, since that had been uninstalled.  Once I put that in, it all seems to work.  Sheesh.

  • How do I upgrade from Adobe XI Standard to Adobe XI Pro?

I'm trying to upgrade my Standard addition of Acrobat 9 to the Pro version.  can someone tell me how to do this?
    Thanks!

    Hey rachelb79735362,
Could you please clarify whether you wish to upgrade from Acrobat 9 or from Acrobat XI Std. to Pro version.
Adobe does not offer upgrade options from Acrobat 9 Std. to Acrobat 9 Pro version.
Also, with the launch of Acrobat DC version, you can simply upgrade from Acrobat XI Std. to Acrobat DC Pro version.
Please refer the link mentioned below and upgrade to this new Acrobat DC version:

  • Installing upgrade from Acrobat XI Standard to Acrobat Xi Pro

I am trying to install an upgrade from Acrobat 11 Standard to Acrobat 11 Pro.  I have purchased and upgrade license.  When I try to install the Pro upgrade, I get a message that a product with higher functions is already installed and it terminates the install.  Does anyone have any suggestions?

I would recommend you uninstall Std, run http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/acrobatcleaner.html, remove any left over Acrobat folder parts (in Program Files>Adobe), reboot, and install. You will likely have to give the S/N for Std as the qualifying product for XI Pro.

  • Stuck upon upgrading from Leopard to Snow Leopard on MacBook pro

    Hey Guys,
I'm experiencing some software issues upon upgrading, anyways I bought a Mac OSX snow leopard disk from the apple store today and wanted to upgrade from leopard, so i made a purchase. I read all of the instructions and inserted the disk, after a few minutes into the installation process, it prompted to restart and continue installation after restart. Once the macbook restarted, it booted up showing only the apple logo. I gave it a couple of minutes (20-30 minutes), yet same thing. Nothing appeared other than the gray apple logo and white background, no spiral w.e thats usually under the logo when installing or something. I've attempted it twice already but still no sign, i get the same results. Restarted my computer, took out the disk and booted back up, then retried the process once again, do any of you guys know a solution? Anyways i'm running on a MacBook pro i5, last years model.

Upgrading will not solve software issues.  Fix the software issues first by isolating their cause.  Is your data backed up?

  • How do I transfer data( photos, music, docs) from MacBook Pro 2009 to MacBook Pro 2015 Retina?

Recently purchased a MB pro retina and I want to transfer my photos, docs and music from my MB Pro 2009. Can someone please help me. I greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

You have a few options available. You can connect the two using Firewire and transferring via Target Disk Mode. If this isn't feasible, then you can connect each to your local network and transfer your files over the network. Be sure to enable File Sharing on each via the Sharing preferences panel.
If you cannot use Target Disk Mode, then you can transfer your data from the old computer to an external USB drive. When finished connect the drive to the new computer and restore the data to the appropriate, respective locations. This is more reliable and faster than using your network.
TDM will require you to purchase a Firewire adaptor for the new computer's Thunderbolt port.

  • MacBook late 2009 vs MacBook Pro Mid 2012 (Ram)

Hi, I recently upgraded the Ram in my MacBook Pro (Mid 2012) to 16gb 1600 MHz DDR3 and my wife's MacBook (late 2009) has 2gb 1067 MHz DDR3 currently in it, but I tried using my old Ram (2gb slots) from the Mid 2012 MacBook Pro, and her MacBook wouldn't boot up at all, I just got a black screen.
So I see the difference is the 1600 MHz vs the 1067 MHz, so does that mean that my old Ram won't work because of this?
    Thanks in advance,
    DJ Meezy

  • Photoshop 5.1 does not open up after upgrading to Yosemite on a 2009 mac book pro

Adobe Photoshop 5.1 does not work after installing upgrade Yosemite.  I have a mac book Pro - 2009

Have seen CS3 (I have) mentioned as working with Maverick/Yosemite
Current Photoshop is creative cloud - you do not have to purchase all elements - instead of lump sum, Adobe charges a monthly license fee - the software resides on your mac - and the mac has to check in once a month to keep the license going - updates are part of the deal.
CS6 apparently is still available if you want to pay the lump sum for an upgrade.

  • HT1444 Upgrading from 10.5.8 to 10.6 (or later) which later version makes the most sense?

For work-related remote-access using Citrix, I will need to upgrade from V10.5.8 to V10.6 (or a later version).  Which new version would make the most sense?

Since it's a 10.5 era issued machine and rather dated, the best OS X version is 10.6.3 via the white retail disks, call Apple Sales by phone and order it for $29.
10.6 will run your presently installed 10.5 software as 10.7 or 10.8 will not. Also 10.7 or 10.8 will slow your machine down to a crawl, so it doesn't make much sense to go there.
Since your machine is getting long in the tooth, it's got not that much longer to go, I would be considering a newer 10.8 or 10.9 machine (next summer) and ease yourself into in.
So 10.6 now, 10.8 or 10.9 on a new machine later.
Don't upgrade to 10.8 and don't worry about it, over 50% of OS X users are on 10.6 currently, (30% on 10.7) and about 5% on 10.8 just released.
Things to consider before upgrading OS X
Back up only your personal info off the machine to a external storage drive (not TimeMachine!), disconnet it. Stick the 10.6.3 disk in and run the updater.
    Most commonly used backup methods
If you need to wipe and install, (like if you have problems because your 10.5 is funkyed up)
How to erase and install Snow Leopard 10.6
Install your programs from fresh original sources and last hook up your storage drive and return files into same named accounts.
