Upgrading from an older program.

This may seem like a dumb question, but I don't know much about Classic, SheepShaver, or any of the ways to run older programs.
I bought an upgrade version for Adobe Illustrator CS3 and the seller tossed in a copy of Illustrator 8.0.1 in, but I can't install that because it requires Classic Environment, and I looked at the SheepShaver site and it was all Greek to me. I am not a programmer and don't know the first thing about assembling binaries or any of that stuff.
Any help with this delima of mine would be great.
Thank you.

If I understand what you have done, I think you should get your money back. So: you got an upgrade Illustrator CS3, you did not own a previous version of Illustrator to upgrade from, so the seller gave you Illustrator 8. You would install Illustrator 8, then run the Illustrator upgrade. Is that correct? If so, it won't work with an Intel machine.
Even if you had the skills necessary to get Sheepshaver going I doubt you could then install the upgrade. Maybe someone could, but they would have to be very very skillful indeed. The upgrade needs to check the previous version of Illustrator before it will install, and I'm not at all sure it would even be able to see the version in OS 9 inside of Sheepshaver.
If you can't get your money back, try to find a version of Illustrator 10. That was the first version to run in OS X, and you might find one cheap that you can register.

  • When upgrade from an older firefox version where an existing plugin was ready enabled, would this plugin become "ask to activate" after upgrade to v26?

What's the user experience if he/she upgrade from an older version of Firefox, where an existing plugin was ready enabled, would this plugin become "ask to activate" after the user upgrade to Firefox v26?

If plugins.click_to_play was set to true, it might. I am finding that click-to-play is not working very well with Firefox. Whether the plugins are set to Always Activate or Ask to Activate, it allows everything from a website to load once it is allowed from the icon in the address bar. I also have the extension Click to play per-element, and that seems to make no difference.

  • Retrieving Missing Sync Settings When Upgrading From an Older Version of Firefox to the latest version.

I initially set up my Sync account using an add-on for an older version of Firefox and have since upgraded to the latest version. But now my browser acts as if I don't have a sync account set up at all. When I attempt to create a new account, it says that my email address is already being used which tells me that my sync information is still on the the servers. So how do I retrieve my sync settings when settings are missing within my browser?

I resolved the problem in Snow Leopard by logging out of my (admin) account and logging into my daughter's account on the same machine. She doesn't have admin privileges, so when I tried to install Firefox 4 in her account, I had to authenticate with my admin identity and PW. Installation went smoothly after that. My guess is that you could also simply create a new account on the same machine and install Firefox 4 from that. I have no idea why this works.

  • Upgrading from an older version of Robohelp.

I have just sat on the telephone for over an hour with no response!  The company I work for own an older version of Robohelp Office - Versions 9.0/9.2 and 2002, we have all the serial numbers, licence numbers etc, and we would like to know whether we can just purchase the upgrade to the new robohelp or whether we have to purchase the full licence.  Any help would be great!

I'd be rather surprised if it was right. The product upgrade page says only version X5, 6 and 7 can be upgraded. Click here to see it.
    Read the RoboColum(n).

  • How can I upgrade from an older OSX to Lion, I do have the requisite processor.  I did not have Snow Leopard, so I do not have the App Store.

The people at the Apple Store told me to wait on an upgrade to Snow Leopard because Lion was coming out soon.   However, without Snow Leopard, I can not get the App Store.
I have OSX 10.58 and a processor big enough to support Lion.

So you need to upgrade to Snow Leoapard first so you can access the Mac App Store in order to download Lion.
Snow Leoapard is available from the online store >  http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A?mco=MTY3ODQ5OTY
Lion requires an Intel-based Mac with a Core 2 Duo, i3, i5, i7 or Xeon processor and 2GB of RAM.

  • Upgrading from an older version of Photoshop

I was once told by someone on the Internet who was selling Photoshop that the version he was selling could not be upgraded.  He said it was an OEM version.  Is there such a thing as an OEM version of Photoshop, or a version that is not upgradable?  I did not purchase his copy.

All legal versions of Photoshop can be upgraded.
    All Pirate versions can't.

  • Upgrade from Panther to Leopard

After buying an iPhone 3GS, I think it's time to finally perform a software upgrade. The newest versions of Firefox and Safari browsers don't run on Panther either. I want to hang on to my 5 year old G4 iMac for at least a couple more years and now have a Leopard pack ready to install (also iLife 09 and iWork 09).
I have a 1GB PC2700 SODIMM on the way, which would raise my total RAM to 1.25 GB. Should I wait until the new RAM is installed before starting the install of Leopard, or would that make little difference?
I have some older software that gets regular use and want to be sure it will still work after Leopard is installed:
    1. Quicken 2004 for basic checkbook balancing and account management (don't do any online stuff).
    2. Apple Works 6
    3. MS Office 2004 for Mac
Plenty of photos saved on iPhoto 4.0.3 and a full music library on iTunes 7.7.1.
Is it safe to go ahead and pop in the Leopard DVD and get this install going, or are there other steps I need to take to avoid losing data from the older programs above?
    Thanks for your help!!

If you currently only have 256mb of RAM, you will have to wait. Leopard's minimum is 512mb.
Going from Panther to Leopard is a big jump. Hopefully, you have an external FireWire drive that is at least the size of the iMac's internal drive. What I would do is clone the current internal drive startup volume to the external drive using Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper. Restart using the clone to make sure it works properly, as if you are starting up normally from the internal drive.
While started up from the external clone, run Disk Utility. Run +Repair Disk+ (on the +First Aid+ tab) on the internal drive.
Once you are satisfied that the clone is working properly, disconnect it. It will serve as your backup. You should always have a current backup (of at least your personal data) when doing a major system update. You can now install Leopard on your internal drive. If something goes wrong or if something critical does not work properly under Leopard, you can always restart from your external clone of the previous system, then clone it back to the internal drive. You'll be back to your pre-Leopard state, so you can try it again.
You can then trouble-shoot potential problems and try again. You can also use the +Archive and Install+ option to install Leopard, which retains your user settings and data but gives you a fresh system. The default installation method installs Leopard over the existing system, and that can somethings cause problems; for example, you may have third-party system extensions installed that are not compatible with Leopard.

  • Internal drives from my older Macpro keeping my new 8 core from booting

I am upgrading from an older dual core Macpro to a new 8 core and found that if I install any of the internal drives from my older Macpro in the new 8 core the computer won't boot. The drives just have data on them no applications of operating software. The older boot drive won't let the 8 core boot either if its installed.
Anyone know if this is to be expected and if so why? I will have to copy 3 - 1 TB drives if they can't be directly used in the new computer.
    Thanks

I've seen a severe corrupt directory cause Macs to refuse to boot from any drive, even from CD/DVDs making it hard to repair and requiring a USB/FW case to repair/format or recovery files.
During startup the system has to scan for valid boot drives even though startup disk tells it where to try to boot from.
Also yours by default boots in 64-bit mode.
Once you have the files you need copied over, why not just reformat and clone your current system.

  • Upgrading from a Blackberry to iPhone4

I see all the questions re upgrading from an older iPhone. Can anyone fill me in on what will be involved in upgrading from a Blackberry (I'm so excited & can't wait to upgrade)? Any additional steps? If the phone is sent to my home, can I get it going through iTunes? Thanks.

There is no upgrade option from a Blackberry or from any other phone besides an iPhone.
If you pre-order online with Apple, you can have the iPhone shipped to your home or office, or have it delivered to an Apple store if there is one nearby. If delivered to your home or office, someone must be available to accept and sign for the delivery.
Everything is done with iTunes - transferring your iTunes music, movies, TV shows, podcasts, and 3rd party apps. If you use iPhoto on your Mac for photo storage and management, you can transfer select iPhone albums, events, and faces to your iPhone, and iPhoto can be used to import photos and videos captured by your iPhone. Since you have a Mac, in regards to contacts and calendar events the iPhone can be synced with the Address Book and iCal via the iTunes sync process with iTunes serving as the sync conduit for this data.

  • Upgrading from Academic

First, I know you're not supposed to be able to upgrade from academic. However, I've looked at the FCS pages on the website and the Apple Store online and can't find any information that says you can't. Is it possible Apple is allowing upgrading from academic to retail with FCS3?
If no one is 100% sure and there isn't any information online about it, do you think I'd be able to return the upgrade if I wanted to try it and it didn't work? Especially since there's nothing anywhere that actually says you can't. That way I can purchase the full version.
If not, I have this situation, and this may be a dumb question....
A very long time ago, probably about 8 or 9 years, I purchased Final Cut Pro 1.something or 2. I believe this was purchased at an academic price, but I was given a full retail version. The problem is it's nowhere to be found. I probably tossed it when I moved a some years back figuring I'd never need it again (big mistake). Does Apple keep a record of these purchases/registrations? Is there a department I can contact at Apple to find out what my serial number was so I can upgrade from that older version I had?
    Thanks!

    Hi Mike
afraid you can't upgade and is is documented on the FCP update page at the apple store.
    +*About the Upgrade+
+The Final Cut Studio upgrade provides an upgrade path from Final Cut Studio 2, Final Cut Studio 1, Production Suite, or any prior version of Final Cut Pro. Academic and Not-For-Resale (NFR) versions are not eligible for upgrade.+

If you have an academic serial no. then the installer will know.
sorry not the news your after i guess

Hi I am just now downloading Creative Clouds :-) as an upgrade from an old Creative Suite 5.5. Before that I hade a Creative suite 3 etc. Is it necessary that I keep all these old programs etc on my computer to make Creative Clouds work or is it better that I uninstall them? Kind regards, AnnaReet

It is not necessary to retain the older installations.  YOu might want to consider if you will have any need for them in terms of working with older files, but other than that you can probably uninstall them without missing them.

  • Will an upgrade from Tiger 10.4.11 to Snow Leopard make me loose programs?

I have an old 2007 Macbook pro and I need to upgrade from Tiger OS 10.4.11 to either leopard of Snow leopard because my charger broke and the new charger does not work probably in the older laptops unless you firmare update (which I cannot do as my OS is less than 10.5)
My question is: Will upgrading wipe all the files and programs from my laptop? I have programs that I no longer have the discs, to install them with, for so if they get wiped I will be unable to get them back and they are programs I need on a daily basis. I was just wondering what upgrading from tiger to leopard will actually involve? Will I loose all files/programs so it would be like starting from scratch with a new computer? Or would it not change these things?

Buy an external drive (or two).
Clone your system before you begin.
Repair the drive while at it, Apple First Aid and another 3rd party program.
Make sure you can boot from your backup clone.
Apple Restore is part of Disk Utilty or there is SuperDuper, or Carbon Copy Cloner.
Me, I would take the above precautions. Then I would format your drive with SL DVD, and perform and clean install. Do all the updates. Then use Setup or Migration Assistant.
Look for threads, there seems to be 4-5 a week at least on Migrating, going from 10.4 or from PPC to 10.6.
That is the safest. In theory, and YMMV, you could try upgrade in place, but not without backups, and repairing your drive with SL DVD first.

  • I had to erase my data to upgrade my iPhone software from an older version. I backed up first, but seem to have lost all my notes.   Does anyone know how retrieve my old notes?

I had to erase my data to upgrade my iPhone software from an older version. I backed up first, but seem to have lost all my notes.   Does anyone know how retrieve my old notes?

Is this the note you are referring to:
Not sure if this can help you.
I checked my notes. They are stored here:
    MacintosHD/Users/MYHOME/Library/Containers/com.apple.notes/Data/Library/CoreData /ExternalRecords/
    xxxxxserie.of.numbers.probably.yours.are.different/IMAPNote/_records/0/
If I go tot this window on finder and enter Time Machine I can go back and find old notes...
If so, am I doing this on my new hard drive on on the time machine? When I do this on the time machine, what is "my home"? Also, I am unable to find "containers".
If I go to users/jeff/library, then I see components, compositions, contextual, etc, but not containers.
    Thanks

(Your photo library will not be readable by previous versions of iPhoto after the upgrade. The upgrade process for very large libraries may take an hour or more to complete.) Back up your iPhoto library, Depress and hold the option (alt) and command keys and launch iPhoto - from the resulting first aid window repair permissions and if necessary rebuild your database
