Upgrading from Core Duo - Core 2 Duo & activating 64 bit

I'm in the process of having my old Core Duo logic board replaced with a Core 2 Duo board in my 2006 iMac.
As it is my understanding that this type of chip enables Snow Leopard to run many of its applications and processes in 64-bit mode, I wonder if this will happen automatically next time I turn the machine on (is the code automatically in there and SL just looks at the processor to see what it can do?), or will I need to reinstall some/all of Snow Leopard -- on the hypothetical basis that when I installed it with the original Core Duo chip, the installer looked at my chip and went with a 32 bit install ... or something like that?

It should all be automatic. However, the replacement board may not boot into 64-bit kernel automatically. See the following:
OS X v10.6- Starting up with the 32-bit or 64-bit kernel

  • Upgrade from core to full ?

    Hello,
I have a core installation from Solaris 9 now i need for some reasons a full installation. Is there a way to upgrade a core to a full installation easily?
I want to avoid a complete new installation because there is some third party software (e.g. Veritas Volume Manager) on the box and i don't like the idea to install everything new.
    Thanks,
    Michael

    Hi,
the n1525 does not work even with latest kernel (4.0.5) and firmware from win8 drivers. Only way at this point of time is to build custom kernel and then use the firmware.
As for the X - this is usually started automatically - like if you use sddm login manager.
As for the nvidia+intel I personally do not recommend optimus due to its poor performance. I have nvidia gtx980m and the difference is beyond bearable. Try running separate X with nvidia (more info in my thread) - scripts are here
I didnt create a AUR package for it yet but if there would be someone wanting it i will.

  • Question on upgrading from win 7 home premium 32bit to 64 bit

So I have a Sattelite L455D.  I upgraded the ram to four gigs however I can't utilize one gig of it well because of the 32bit limitations.  The stock proccesor is capable of running 64bit.  So I want to upgrade to 64 bit.
Now based on my research the retail installation disc would've came with the option to install both versions.  However my specific laptop did not come with any back up dics or anything of that nature.  So If I was to do a factory out of the box reset would I get prompted on which version to install?  IF not is there ANY work around without having to go out and buy a retail win 7 disc?
    Thanks,
    Ed.

You would need to install a retail copy of 64-bit Windows 7 and then install all of the drivers and utilities that make it work properly on your model. It's not a minor undertaking. And there is always the chance that you won't be able for one reason or another to get things working right.
If you install 64-bit Windows Home Premium, you are entitled to activate it for free.
32-bit Windows supports 4 of your 8 GB. Our computers here with several Office 2010 applications running rarely require more than 2 GB and never approach 3 GB.
If you run heavy-duty applications like video editing or CAD, you'll want access to all 8 GB of course.
I can help a bit more if you decide to go ahead with this project.

  • I want to upgrade to Lightroom 5, but I'm concerned about compatibility with my 2008 intel Core 2 Duo iMac with only 4G of Ram.  Will I be able to run Lighroom 5 if I upgrade from Snow Leopard to Lion?

I want to upgrade to Lightroom 5, but I'm concerned about compatibility with my 2008 intel Core 2 Duo iMac with only 4G of Ram.  Will I be able to run Lightroom 5 okay if I upgrade from Snow Leopard to Lion?  What will happen to the applications that aren't 64-bit compatible?  Also the Eye-one Display 2 colorimeter to calibrate the monitor will not run on Lion, so that will be an expensive upgrade to an i1DisplayPro. Is the upgrade important enough to offset the expense?  I have an Epson R2000 printer.  Will there be problems with the drivers if I upgrade to Lion?  It would be great to hear from other mac users who are also photographers and who print their own photos.

Before upgrading to Lion be sure to read this link:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6271
    Adobe lists these requirements:
    http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop-lightroom/tech-specs.html
Looking at http://www.everymac.com/ even the earliest 2008 iMac was fully 64 bit, even though Boot Camp doesn't support 64 bit Windows on that machine.

Thanks for your reply--makes me not want to get involved with Mavericks, and I appreciate the heads-up.  What I hadn't thought about is that by upgrading my OS I would also have to upgrade from my Adobe CS1.  Since I'm retired from my art career, I'm reluctant to spend the dough on new CS; but I still like using PhotoShop and InDesign (and obviously don't care that they are outmoded).  But I'll bet any newer Mac OS won't run my old software.

    Hi,
the Intel Core Duo processor is a 32-bit only processor and not capable of 64-bit.
Only the Core 2 Duo and later processors are capable of 64-bit.
    Sorry

  • Upgrade from 10.6.7 to .8 will NOT complete on my Core Duo MBP?

is this because it is a 32bit CPU? I know I won't be runnin Lion...

    OK.
Here is the process I use and it hasn't failed me in 4 years.
    1. Download the Combo Update. (don't install until later)
    2. Disconnect all Peripherals
    3. Backup using Time Machine and a Bootable Clone
    3. Using either the Snow Leopard disc or a Bootable Clone Repair Disk Permissions, Verify Disk and Repair Disk.
    4. Restart the computer in Safe Mode and install the Combo Update following the on-screen instructions.
    5. After update has successfully installed restart normally and begin plugging in peripherals and test.
I've upgraded from Tiger to Leopard to Snow Leopard with many updates in-between and this process has proven very reliable.

  • HOw Do I upgrade from Tiger 4.11 to 5.6 on an I Mac 5.1 (Mid 2006) Intel core2 Duo?

How do  I upgrade from 4.11 (Tiger) on an I Mac 5.1 (mid2006)
to 4.6 (Snwoleopard)? I have an Intel core 2 duo  processor
with 2.16 GHz speed and 1GB RAM .
Can I just buy a disc and install- do I need to backup everything from my harddisk
    and reinstall the whole stuff?
Isw Lion (4.7) an option - or do I need more Ram?

You can but the Snow Leopard install disk from the Apple on-line storre for $29 (US) and install that on your machine.  You would be better off increasing the memory from 1 GB to 2 GB.  It is always advisable to backup your data to an external hard drive before updating an operating system just as a precaution.
For Lion you need at least 2 GB ram, 4 GB is better, and an Intel Core 2 Duo or better cpu, which you say you have.

  • Upgrade from tiger to leopard on an Imac with no intel duo???

Does anyone know if you can upgrade from Tiger to Leopard to an iMac with no Intel Core Duo?
It's the third generation of iMac's right before the duo came out? I want to upgrade but not sure if it will work/

Absolutely! The only OS that needs intel is Snow Leopard, 10.6.xx You can certainly upgrade to the last iteration of Leopard [10.5.8.combo update|http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/macosx1058com boupdate.html] without any problem. Just make sure you have maxed out your RAM.

  • Running OS 10.6.8 on a 3.06 GHz Intel Core i3 Mac can I upgrade from Indesign CS5 to CS6?

Running OS 10.6.8 on a 3.06 GHz Intel Core i3 Mac can I upgrade from Indesign CS5 to CS6?

They do, but what happens when the client(s) move to CC? Of course doing
so opens a new can of worms for you since 10.6.8 is unsupported for
    anything later than CS6.
You should start budgeting for some upgrades sooner rather than later.

  • Upgrading from an intel core 2 processor

I would like to upgrade from Intel core 2 due processor, my model identifier is Pro 7,1

    No, I'm afraid not.
I would suggest that you have 3 options:
Buy a used, but newer model, at places like eBay and Amazon.
Buy a new model from Apple.
Buy an Apple refurbished model - usually last year's and sometimes the year prior to that.
