Upgrading from FCS to FCS2

Hi Guys.
I'm really hoping someone here can help.
I design, build and sell broadcast equipment including lenses, lens adaptors, cameras, tripods etc.
As part of a larger order, I provided one of my customers (who is based in Africa) a mac pro (dual quad core, 2 Tb etc) and a copy of FCS1.
I'm not an apple reseller or anything, it's just easier for this guy to buy everything he needs through me.
This was at the time that FCS2 was not yet shipping but FCS1 was no longer available.
As my customer was in a hurry and had a project he needed to start editing right away, I had to go through a 3rd party who had a (new, unopened) copy of FCS1 on the shelf, so I managed to get that for him.
Now, some months later, my customer came to visit the uk and was hoping to take a copy of the upgrade home with him.
As he was here for just a couple of days, I didnt have time to wait to buy and take delivery from the online store, so I went and purchased a copy from one of the apple shops here in London.
In the store, a member of staff told me about the two versions of the upgrade but unfortunately the cheaper FCS1 to FCS2 was out of stock.
I asked if the more expensive FCP to FCS2 would still work, he said it would, so I purchased that as I had no choice and my customer was going back home the following day.
Saturday night, I get a call from my guy in Africa saying that the upgrade wont accept the FCS1 serial n° when prompted.
Have I been sold the wrong upgrade?
or is it an un-upgradable copy of FCS1
Technically, I know I should have got the cheaper version, but time constraints prevented me from doing that and in any case, shouldnt we expect the more expensive version to work?
I feel really bad and the guy is one of my best customers.
Is this my fault, apples fault or the idiot in the shop?
Any help greatly appreciated.

Since you get a copy of FCS2 you have a full version of the software but when you are prompted to insert the FCS2 serial FCP recognizes it is an upgrade from a past version...
So if you bought an FCS2 upgrade from Final Cut Pro FCS2 expects you insert a Final Cut Pro serial (or that you have Final Cut Pro installed on your mac)... If you insert another serial (like an FCS1 serial) it will not be recognized so the software will not install...
Sorry... I think you bought the wrong piece of software... try to get your money back if you can or try to sell the wrong upgrade and get the right one...

  • Upgrade from FCS to FCS2 academic possible?

I have the non-academic version of Final Cut Studio and I want to upgrade to Studio 2. I saw the academic version on Ebay, unregistered. If I bought this version, would Apple deny my current registration numbers?

Academic versions are all stand alone. They are not upgradable nor will they upgrade another version. Your FCS1 version is not affected by FCS2 academic other than they will not coexist peacefully on the same system drive. It's either one or the other.

fwiw - If you are not in academia, you are in violation of the licensing agreement to purchase and install the software.

  • FCP Upgrade from FCS to cater for QT7.6

I'm in the UK using PAL
I've dropped a clanger recently and uprated to QT7.6 from 7.2 and can no longer log and capture any stuff from video tapes (analogue) yet I have a local demand for quite a lot of transferring from tapes still to be done. QT7.6 is the culprit. I can't get rid of it to downgrade. If I can move up instead and once again log and capture analogue it's the way for me to go. If I upgrade my FCP 5.1.4, wiil l then be able to use my analogue log and capture for editing purposes again?
I was gong to trash everything and re-install but if I can gain everything back by upgrading, I'll do it that way. I'm already furious at being seemingly cheated by Apple in obeying its advising all QT7 users to uprate to 7.6 and don't wish to further aggravate my problem with yet more errors ....
Anyone using a higher grade of FCP and also doing log and capture of analogue stuff. All help needed here. Ta!

**** - **** - **** ... I erased everything and reinstalled OSX then tried to install my Final Cut Studio upgrade. It wouldn't accept it for installing without the serial numbers of the previous FCPs (1,2 and 3) that I USED to have but which disappeared in the direction of a grandson ... The grand idea was to in any case re-install the FCS from the Lacie but it won't go. Just flashes to indicate beginning to open up but that's all. I realise that I should perhaps have reinstalled the FCS without installing OSX first, it having OS 4.7 which installed earlier, albeit without wroking properly.
What a mess I'm having with Mail, too! I've gone onto Virgin.net and am using its mail facility in the absence of the Mac one which which incessantly asks for a proper pasword. At the moment, Apple is definitelyout of favour!
I can get FCP 5.1.4 to make a showing within the Lacie but it won't operate in the fresh set-up I've done on my startup drive - and of course, it is suffering from not being able to log and capture analogue stuff, the reason for all this mess in the first place.
Help if possible would be most appreciated.

  • Final Cut Studio 3 upgrade from FCS 2

What is the main difference between the Final Cut Studio 3 Upgrade version and the full retail version? I already have FCS 2 installed with all content but wonder if there's anything missing from the upgrade version compared to the full installation. Is it just the applications that are updated or is there any new content that I'll be missing with the upgrade?

And why would you trust us? We don't work for Apple and it is unlikely one of us will purchase both versions - so how would we know?
When in doubt, throw money in the general direction of uncertainty. It won't be a better solution but you'll feel that you've done everything possible to acquire the best solution. You'll also have the benefit if being able to sell your old FCS version on ebay because you won't need its serial number as a basis for the upgrade.
    ymmv of course.

  • Can I upgrade from FCS 2 (Educational) to FCS 3 (Commercial)?

Right now I own the educational license of Final Cut Studio 2. Now that I am going to start selling my work, I need the commercial license. Do I have to purchase Final Cut Studio 3 for the full price, or can I upgrade at the discount price like those who owned the commercial license for Final Cut Studio 2 can?

Got different info from the Apple Store
Well then, it must be true!
Head back to that store and drop your cash, take home the box, open it and try to install the software. Right about the time that you need to give a new Serial Number, you'll get a disappointing message to the effect that this version can't be upgraded (or it will simply refuse to take the number). In either case you'll have an opened box with software that will not install.
So, you put all the disks and paperwork back in the box and schlep back to the store. (Hopefully it's a short distance!) Given that they gave you bad advice, perhaps they'll take it back and credit you toward the purchase price of the full retail version. Of course, they could also refuse to take it back saying something like, "well, it CLEARLY states on the website that Academic versions are not upgradeable!" If this is the case, you're left holding the bag (box). I suppose you can always sell the upgrade on ebay for 50-75% of what you paid and use that money towards the purchase of the retail version.
Or, you could simply purchase the correct version from the beginning and be on your way.
    Have fun.

  • Final Cut Studio 2 Upgrade from FCS - How's It Going?

    Hello
I'm been using FCS 5.1 with great success. I have quite a bit of WWII footage stored and edited. The color correction program, 'Color' in FCS 2 is superior to FCS. I bought the upgrade but haven't put it in yet. Was wondering if you guys could give me your opinions about the Upgrade? Does it open older projects ok? Is it problematic in any areas? I do realize once you've opened a older project, it will forever be saved in the newer version.
    Thank You

We are busy WORKING. Two hours...a bit impatient aren't we?
    lol.
FCP 6...Studio 2...is a great improvement over FCP 5.1.4. Color makes it worth it, Motion 3 makes it worth it. Added support for other formats and better stability makes it worth it. Upgrade is solid....go for it.

  • Upgrading from FCS1 to FCS2

I have FCS1 Academic running on two machines at work. An Intel iMac and a Power Mac G5. Should I uninstall FCS1 before installing 2.
It seems people on this forum like to use an actual FCS_Remover that you download and run. Is that what I should do?
Archive or a clean erase and install are not options.
    Thanks!

Maybe I'm just giving him/her the benefit of the doubt, but all the poster said is that they have FCS 1 academic running on two machines at work. If the poster, let's say a teacher or student, has purchased two copies of FCS 1 and is running them on two separate machines, is this not legal. (Isn't this the way it should be done?) Or are you only allowed to purchase one copy?
Don't get me wrong, I think the information pointed out by you and Jim is very important, I just
don't think it's right to assume someone is doing something illegal without knowing all the information... ("What's wrong with this picture?")
I won't shoot the messenger, but will apologize if I'm mistaken.

  • Upgrade to FCS 3 - Un-install previous or not?

    Intel iMac 3.06GHz
    Hello everyone...
When upgrading from FCS 2 to FCS 3, is it ok to try upgrading from the current set-up, or is it advised to un-install the current version first?
A clone of the system already exists, so were safe. But I'm not sure which is the best way to do it.
Also, the current scratch disk is an external drive. If we upgrade, will Final Cut create new folders on there, or will it recognise the existing ones?
Lastly, if all the extra content from FCS 2 is already installed, will it recognise that and just update what is new?
    Thank you very much!

The normal method is to upgrade over the existing setup. This will preserve settings (including scratch disk locations), but even if the odd one isn't preserved, you can reset easily in FC preferences.
The upgrade will replace existing applications with the newer versions, except for LiveType which isn't in FCS3. Your existing LiveType will be left alone (whereas, of course, if you remove FCS2 first, it'll be gone). It's your call whether that's an issue. The functionality of Livetype has been moved into Motion, so it isn't lost, but if you use it a lot, you'll probably want to keep it.
The content should be replaced too, but I have seen one case where it wasn't. I have my content on an external drive (you can customize during the install, so the disk space isn't an issue for me.

  • Did you need to reinstall FCS after upgrading from Tiger to Leopard?

Need to upgrade from Tiger to Leopard mid FCP/Motion3 project and without FCS2 discs handy...I can't access them til after the project deadline.
I've read in a KB article that 'most' of the apps are ok after the upgrade-what's your experience?

Don't even think about it unless
#1 You MUST have a new OS to complete the project (i.e. new plug-in only works in 10.5)
    AND
#2 You'll have a lot of extra time on your hands to reinstall everything when FCS doesn't quite work the way you need it to.
Of course you're familiar with the recommendation to clone your system before ANY upgrade.

  • FCS 2 Upgrade from FCP 2?

I have a question about the upgrade to FCS 2. In the Apple store it says you can upgrade from an old version including FCP 2. I have a legit FCP 2 install disc so I assume this would work, but I'm not exactly sure how. FCP 2 is an OS 9 only app and the machine I want to upgrade does not have it on there--we are not running FCP 2 anywhere. Does the old version have to be installed for the upgrade? In the past updgrades for FCP / FCS have required the "original install disc" to be inserted. Is there anyone at the store.apple.com that I can contact about this? I thought there was a chat, but I can't find it now. (I'm in Micronesia and the closest Apple store is at least 1000 miles away.) Any suggestions appreciated.

The old version does not have to be installed. You merely have to enter the serial number for the older version when prompted.

  • Can you upgrade to FCS 2 from FCS 1 Academic?

I'm a poor student. Anybody know?

No, not for the retail discounted price.
    You have three choices.
    1. bit the bullet and purchase FC Studio 2 retail.
    2. use what you have and be happy.
    3. purchase FC Studio 2 Academic for ~$699.
Recognize that the academic price for FCS2 is only $200 more than the retail upgrade from FCS1>FCS2 - not a bad deal for a 'non-upgradable' bit of software.
    good luck.

  • FCP 5 Upgrade From FCE

I recently bought an FCP 5 upgrade (M9921Z/A) and the Apple website says that it can upgrade from FCE. I know it's old but couldn't afford to buy FC Studio 2 and couldn't find a full-up version of FCP5. I've tried it with both an FCE 2.0 and FCE 3.5 S/N and neither works. Has Apple caused me to waste money or is there some solution to this problem? Does anyone have an unused FCP S/N that I could use? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. . .

    Larry,
The only "upgrade" from FCE to Final Cut Studio 1 was a limited time offer that was known as the Crossgrade Program. The program lasted for a bit over a year and expired back in March prior to the release of Final Cut Studio 1. This program allowed Final Cut Express and Pro users to obtain the Universal version of Final Cut Studio 1. This was a paid upgrade and only worked if you filled out a form, and mailed in your original install discs. For users that were already using FCS 1 (PPC version), they were sent back a set of Universal Install discs, which utilized their original serial numbers. For any other upgrades, (i.e. from FCP 4, or FCE), a set of install discs were mailed back along with a retail serial number, not an upgrade serial.
Apple no longer sells Final Cut Pro 5 at any of their stores. The only version of FCP available at Apple is FCS2. It is not possible to use an Express serial number to "Upgrade" to Final Cut Pro.
Where did you purchase this "upgrade"?
The only help you are going to receive here is basically going to tell you to contact Apple directly, or get FCS2. Discussion on how to illegally obtain Serial numbers is strictly forbidden, and is against the forums terms of use, as well as against the EULA.

  • Upgrading from volume license?

I have a copy of FCS that is one of a volume license. The company will not be upgrading the volume license for at least a year, but would like to get one copy of fcs2 to play with. Can we purchase the regular fcs2 upgrade for 499 for one copy and use the volume serial to upgrade from?

No... at least that would be very unlikely. In the past, Apple did not offer any upgrade paths from volume licenses.
That said. Check with your Apple or your reseller with regards to your particular case.
    Good luck

  • Can't upgrade from Compressor 3.0/Final Cut 6.0

I've just installed FCS2 Retail upgrade from FCS1. FCS1 was never installed on this machine, but I did have a couple of botched installs of FCS2 here. Through extensive means, all traces of the previous installs were deleted.
Everything seems to work ok (including Compressor 3.0), but when I do a Software Update check, none of the Compressor updates (3.01, 3.02, 3.03) come up. When I go through the Apple Downloads site, no Compressor updates there either. In addition, Final Cut Pro updates also don't show (currently stuck at 6.0). Other apps in the suite updated to current versions according to Versiontracker lookups (though LiveType is at 2.1.3--LiveType doesn't show up on Versiontracker).
Pro Applications Update 2008-01 did show up in my Apple DL list (but not in Software Update), but it wouldn't install; it said something about an error (wasn't specific, naturally), and to try again (which I did not).
    So here's my questions:
    1) Why won't the Compressor & FCP updates show up?
    2) Were there enough improvements in any of those updates that I should care that they aren't showing up?
    3) Any other feedback about Pro Apps 2008-01 update?
    Thanks!

Thanks! I was beginning to suspect that. As such, I went to try the Pro Apps install again, and this time it worked! Go figure, I guess I should have heeded the installers advice when it told me to "Try Again".
