Upgrading from iBook

Hello,
This may sound like an absurd question, however...
I am a iBook G3 user (June 2003 model) with 640 mb of ram, 40 gb hard drive and the 900mhz chip. Although I have maxed out my performance by installing the latest OS X version, I am wondering how fast my system is compared to newer notebooks.
I am considering upgrading to either the MacBook pro 15 inch or the last manufactured Powerbook G4 15 in. model released earlier this year, which is still available in very limited supplies.
How does my iBook model compare to the newest available Apple notebooks in terms of performance and general ability? I run memory intensive programs like Photoshop CS, Microsoft Office 2004, and iMovie 4. Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks,
christian a.

Just to add to the others' comments....
My last notebook was a 12" PowerBook G4 (867MHz, 1.12GB RAM, but no L2 cache) and I'm still thrilled with the speed boost I'm seeing on my MacBook Pro. So I would expect that you'd see similar or even more improvement.
I also use Photoshop CS, and it's the same or very slightly faster on my MacBook Pro than on my 12" PowerBook. (Some of the slight improvement would likely be from more free hard drive space, more RAM, and L2 cache.) So again, I would expect your experience to be the same or, very likely, you'd see a more significant speed improvement. (Since Photoshop runs under Rosetta, you probably won't see the dramatic speed boosts that you'll see in Universal programs.)
To get as much out of it as you can, especially for work with Photoshop and other memory-intensive applications, consider getting 2GB of RAM right away if you can. You'll enjoy the elbow room - I know I do.
I also considered getting a refurbished PowerBook instead of the MacBook Pro, and the prices and deals being offered now are tempting. But I finally decided that I'd prefer getting the most current Mac that I can, to at least stay with current technology for a little while.

  • Upgrading from ibook g4 to Tiger

I recently decided to help my girlfriend upgrade her ibook g4's OS to Tiger, since she's running 10.3.9 and can't update to the newest version of iTunes. I made sure her computer met all the necessary technical requirements as per apple's website, then proceeded to buy the OS on ebay. When the disks came I noticed that they read "Macbook install disk", but since apple's website hadn't made any differentiation between a macbook and an ibook on its' requirements page I didn't think too much of it. I backed the computer up and then attempted to install the new OS. After shutting down and restarting, the normal grey apple screen came on, but after a couple seconds a large display appearead which read "Your computer needs to be restarted, etc.", and over this screen was all sorts of fragmented code, including a message saying a driver couldn't be found, blah blah blah. I figured this meant wrong type of install disk. Does anyone know if I can even find a version of this more recent OS which will work on an ibook?

Tiger install DVDs are in short supply. Tiger is no longer available at the Apple Store but may be available for $129 by calling Apple Phone Sales @ 1-800-MY-APPLE (1-800-692-7753). For other sources, do a Google search for MA453Z/A (10.4.6), MA190Z/A (10.4.3) and M9639Z/A (10.4) . Also look on eBay. Be sure & buy a retail version (black with silver X) and not a model specific version (gray) (See Can I use another Mac's system restore disc on my Mac? ). Expect to pay (possibly a lot) more than the Apple list price of $129.

Possible Alternative if you are currently using Panther 10.3 – Do a Google search for Tiger 10.4 Upgrade DVD . It will upgrade your 10.3 to 10.4, but it doesn’t contain the full retail Tiger installer. Should be cheaper than the retail Tiger install DVD.
After you install the base 10.4.x, update to the final Tiger version 10.4.11. Here's the link for the 10.4.11 combo update http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24901?viewlocale=en_US

I Am wondering is it easy to upgrade?
Is it free to upGrade or Cost?
And where Can i downlod the up grade?
And when you upgrade do you lose all the info and files on ya computer?

You can't download & it's not free. But Tiger install DVDs are in short supply. When you install Tiger, use the Archive & Install feature. You won't lose any of your settings (email, internet, etc). You may find that some of your applications will not run in Tiger, so you will need to get updates for them or download later versions.

  • Just Upgraded from iBook G4

My lovely boyfriend bought me a brand new MacBook Pro. It's really nice, but it's really different from my current computer, my iBook G4. I've had it only for a few days and worked out most of the kinks, but I still have a few things I haven't been able to figure out:
    - How do I get the "Look Up In Dictionary" on right click?
    - How do I get the spell check (red underline) back?
    - How do I turn off the auto suggest/correct?
    - How do I get to the information section on iTunes? With the iBook & iTunes 10.3.1, I can have my miniplayer and just got Applekey+I and get the information of the song pop up.
    - Can I get rid of the arrows after the song name on iTunes?
    - Is there a way to get the miniplayer more similar to the iTunes 10.3.1? I find the default information and having to scroll over to get additional stuff tedious.
    - Is there a way to get the search bar back, instead of the combined URL and search bar? Is there a way I can use DuckDuckGo as default instead of Google/Bing ... or... Yahoo! ?
Sorry for the barage of questions and thanks for your time!

Also, I see that the cache and cookies are  now in a single place. I only have select cookies on my computer from specific websites, so when I clear the cache it clears out these cookies too. Is there a way to have them separated? I want to be able to clear my cache but I want to keep the dozen cookies I have.

I upgraded my iBook G4 from 384MBytes to 640Mbytes and upgraded from Tiger to Leopard.
After a few weeks the HDD failed. I bought a new disk, installed it and trued to install Leopard, but the  install fails reporting "insufficient memory".
I assume the installation requires more memory than the OS actually needs to be able to run.
I need Tiger install CD/DVD so I can install Tiger first and then upgrade to Leopard.

Call Apple Customer Support 1-800-767-2775, provide the Serial Number and specifications of the Mac, and for a reasonable fee, they will supply a replacement set of system discs (if available).
The discs will be for the original version of the OS that was pre-installed when the Mac was manufactured.
You need much more RAM than that.

  • IBook upgrade from 10.3.5 to 10.4.3

My daughter, the other end of the country from me, has just upgraded her iBook from 10.3.5 to 10.4.3 with a clean install, having copied her hard disk to her iPod.
The Migration assistant utility is not interested in importing all the bits she needs back from her iPod [either as 'from another Mac' or 'from another volume on this Mac'], so I am not sure where to go from here.
Clearly she can copy all her documents back to her iBook [though I am not sure about putting her iPhoto pix in the right places]. However, when it comes to copying back all the apps for which she does not have newer versions how does she find all the support files/prefs and get them in the right place?
    Cheers, Colin
PS I think hers is a G4, not that it matters, I guess.
    iBook G3, 900Mhz, 640Mb RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.2)   Palm

    Hi Colin,
What kind of iPod does she use? The migration assistant only works with firewire devices, not with USB-devices.
How did she backup? Did she clone the hard disk to the iPod or did she copy by drag&drop? If she used e.g. Carbon Copy Cloner to make a clone there is a chance to recover, otherwise sshe will have to manually copy back her documents and reinstall some applications (many apps can be copied back by drag&drop as well).
    BTW:
Why did she Erase&Install in the first place? Apple recommends using the simple upgrade option, if there are problems an Archive&Install should also do. There is absolutely no reason for an Erase&Install unless she upgraded from 10.1.x or earlier. Here is a procedure for the simple upgrade: 10.4 Tiger Upgrade: Decision tree+Checklist

upgrading from snow leapord to mavericks, i couldn't opened app store, messenger, ibook,FaceTime, maps and other. please help

Try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

    Safe Mode - About
If that doesn't work, do a backup. Boot to the Recovery Volume (command - R on a restart or hold down the option key during a restart and select Recovery Volume). Run Disk Utility Verify/Repair and Repair Permissions until you get no errors. Then reinstall the OS.

  • I cannot recover my pdf files from ibooks after upgrading to os 6

Does anyone know how to recover pdf files from ibooks after os 6 upgrade?

In your next-to-last post, you said: "... when I recovered the iBooks app, it was empty due to having a different owner of the app."
I'm suggesting you change the owner of the app and maybe then it won't be empty.
You can delete/remove the app and get your own from the app store and install it.  Maybe then you'll see your PDFs.

Quite seriously, the servers themself are really the least likely
culprit here. Everything points to a much more wdespread problem
affecting pretty much everything on the network. That could be the
network itself, or some machine that has crapped out and overloads the
net, something like that. NW65SP8 / BM3.9 is extremely stable, including

  • Finder not operating after upgrade from 10.2.8 to 10.3.4

I tried to upgrade from 10.2.8 to 10.3.4. Everything worked properly except for the fact that the finder menu bar at the top of the screen kept flashing. I upgraded again to 10.3.9 and the finder completely stopped functioning. I could still access all the programs from my dock but could not access the hard drive directly or see files saved on the desktop.
To solve this problem I reinstalled 10.2 but am now having trouble with the system update for 10.2.8 (which I've noticed has been a problem for others).
    Any suggestions?

    Hi Again alamogirl!
You wrote "The install CDs that I used were grey instead of black.
That is the source of your problem!
USING OS X INSTALL CDS/DVDS ON MULTIPLE MACS
The question of using system/software install CDs/DVDs on more than one machine is frequently asked.
    So, FYI:
System software installation CDs/DVDs, that come with a particular Mac model, are hardware specific to that model, and not intended to be used on other Mac models. For instance, the CDs/DVDs that are shipped with an iMac are not to be used on an iBook or eMac.
And the "Tiger" DVDs that are shipped with any new Mac, also are not to be used on other Mac models.
If such an installation were possible, or somehow accomplished successfully, that action would constitute a violation of your license agreement, which limits installation to a single computer.
The "Single User Software License Agreement" can be found here Software License Agreement.
Similarly, any "Upgrade" CDs/DVDs for a particular Mac OS will ONLY work for that Mac & system. For example, if a new Mac that shipped with Jaguar/Panther, was purchased shortly before the release of Panther/Tiger, the user may have purchased "Upgrade" CDs/DVDs, for a lesser price than the full install set. These CDs/DVDs do not contain all of the necessary components for an independent installation of Panther or Tiger.
The license agreement applies to single user retail versions of system software. The "Panther" or "Tiger" boxed set, for example.
If you wish to upgrade to Panther or Tiger, you have to purchase a Full Retail Version, of either OS.
    Good Luck!

  • How do you fix 'unable to upgrade from version 0'?

I have been working on 6 ibooks over the past year, documenting a lot of stuff for user manuals for our school. The ibooks were all created in iBA version 1.0, but are not published - we only use them internally so we just use the previews.
I gave up trying to upgrade my 1.0 iBooks, it takes too long to 'optimize' the files when I try to open them in 2.0. I have read all the issues with iBA 2.0, but decided to download 2.0 on another computer and wabt to try to re-write all my old 1.0 manuals (I have all the files that went into them).
However, when I double-click to open the 2.0, nothing happens. So I go to 'File' and select 'New from Template Chooser'. I then get the window with all the new templates, including the portrait ones. When I select any template, say the 5th one for example, I get the prompt "The document 'Textbook 05.ibatemplate' could not be upgraded. Unable to upgrade from version 0". This happens for every template. I don't understand. I downloaded the 2.0 from the app store onto a 'clean' computer. Yes, it has Lion on it and all the spec requirements to run iBA. Can anyone help me with what to do next?

Did you ask Apple for help yet?

  • Is it possible to upgrade from Tiger (10.4) to Leopard (10.5)? Thanks

Wondering if I can upgrade from TIger to Leopard (and then to Lion) on my old Macbook. Don't really want to buy a new notebook when this one works fine. But would like to use some of the features available through Lion (notably iCloud). Thanks.

    Hello Judy,
You'd want to skip Leopard/10.5.x totally as it's not needed & expensive since Apple no longer sells it & it was $129.
You can get Snow Leopard/10.6 for $29, then once updated to 10.6.6 or greater buy Lion/10.7 from the App Store, as long as your MacBook meets the requiremenys...
    Snow Leopard/10.6.x Requirements...
    General requirements
       * Mac computer with an Intel processor
        * 1GB of memory (I say 2GB at least)
        * 5GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
        * DVD drive for installation
        * Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
        * Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and terms apply.
Which apps work with Mac OS X 10.6?...
    http://snowleopard.wikidot.com/
It looks like they might still have it...
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A?fnode=MTY1NDAzOA
    If it's a core Duo & not a Core2Duo, then it'll only run in 32 bit mode.
    Lion/101.7 System requirements
        •    x86-64 processor (Macs with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Intel Core i3, Intel Core i5, Intel Core i7, or Xeon processor.)
        •    At least 2GB of memory[14]
        •    Latest version of Mac OS X Snow Leopard (10.6.8), with the Mac App Store installed
        •    At least 4GB of disk space for downloading[14]
Like Snow Leopard, Lion does not support PowerPC-based Macs (e.g., Power Macs, PowerBooks, iBooks, iMacs (G3-G5), eMacs).
Lion also does not support 32-bit Intel Core Duo or Core Solo based Macs. Rosetta is no longer available in Lion, which means Lion no longer supports PowerPC applications.

  • Upgrading from IPhone 3 to IPhone 4

I am trying to upgrade from IPhone 3 to IPhone 4, by restoring from iTunes.  I've followed the steps on Apple site (check for upgrades, back-up old phone, go through steps on new iphone, select restore from back-up, choose back up to restore from).  It went through everything and then for no apparent message came up with an error message saying restore from back up had not completed.  Now when I try to start the process again, iTunes launches straight into backing up and syncing my NEW phone, even though the who process hasn't yet completed.  Am in a complete loop - it won't let me start the process again from scratch or allow me to restore again.  Help!

Thanks to everybody for the quick advice. I did manage to get iTunes to show the 4.1 update by selecting "Check for Updates" from the iTunes menu (it would be under the "Help" menu on Windows I believe), and I am in the process of downloading the update right now (download only). As per the advice offered by everybody else who replied to my post, I will be waiting for a while before actually running the update to see how this update fairs on other folks' 2nd generation iPod Touches. I'm happy enough with iPhone OS 3.1.3 for now. I'd really like to have iBooks and a few other apps that require iOS 4 as well as the unified inbox and home-screen folders, but I'm content enough to hold off a while longer just to ensure maximum stability.
    Thanks again everybody!
