Upgrading from  IMac OS X v.10.3.9

Hi,
I would really appreciate some help with the following:
I have a mac desktop (MAC OS x v 10.3.9) and suddenly I have not been able to update Itunes, safari... etc... it dawned on me that I was probably light years behind on upgrades, however, I seem to be stuck now and can't upgrade unless I install v7 or Os X Lion?? the thing is that even to install Lion on line I need the APP store and not having App store, I am unable to do this... can someone help me please??
Many thanks

If you're going that route, this info from TexasMacMan may be of use;

Leopard is no longer available at the Apple Store but may be available by calling Apple Phone Sales @ 1-800-MY-APPLE (1-800-692-7753).
If you can't obtain a retail install DVD from Apple, look on eBay or Google the installer part numbers to possibly find at an on-line store. Here's what to look for:
MB427Z/A  Leopard 10.5.1 install DVD
MB576Z/A  Leopard 10.5.4 install DVD
MB021Z/A  Leopard 10.5.6 install DVD (single user)
MB022Z/A  Leopard 10.5.6 install DVD (5-user family pack)

  • Upgraded from iMac to MBP - now USB & Firewire hubs don't work

    Hi there,
I've just upgraded from a 2008 C2D 20" iMac to a new 2011 13" MBP i5. I'm running Pro Tools 8LE via a Digi 003 rack & have a Command8 plus other USB/FW400 devices in my set up. I've always used both a USB hub & a FW400 hub to connect everything to the iMac (daisy chaining causes some instability issues / track restriction in Pro Tools).
Now however, the MBP doesn't see any devices connected via the hubs. If I connect directly & daisy chain the devices, they work. I have the USB hub connected to the MBP with a FW800-FW400 cable.
Any idea what's causing this? Here's links to both hubs... they have been working fine with this setup for 3 years:

    Thanks

I had the same problem with my desktop Mac, and resolved the hub situation by following two suggestions: (1) daisy-chaining the devices (which you're already doing) and (2) reset the hub. For the latter, pull out your devices/hubs, reboot your MBP, and put the devices/hub in. This resets the hubs so you can use them again.
It also might help if you make sure you've plugged in the wall outlet; this increases the power available to your devices.
I'd be very interested if these fixes work.

  • Upgrade from iMac to Mac Pro - RAID5 options?

I am currently using a 27" iMac 2.66 Ghz Core i5 for my main processing needs (RAW image file editing in Adobe Lightroom & Photoshop plus HDSLR footage editing in Final Cut) and am feeling constrained by my storage options (I don't like external enclosures but want a separate boot/apps drive from my media drive) so my only logical upgrade path is a Mac Pro.
My ideal solution would be to have a lightning fast boot/apps drive (SSD seems obvious choice) and then a RAID5 array of 3 large (2TB) drives to give me at least 4GB of media storage.
The problem is that when I go to spec a Mac Pro with a hardware RAID card (because I understand that software RAID under Disk Utility can only offer RAID0 or RAID1), I am told by the web configuration tool: "Solid-state drives are not compatible with the Mac Pro RAID Card in either RAID or Enhanced JBOD mode."
What I would like to know is whether this is an absolute technical limitation or is it just something that Apple does not officially support? This would be my main production machine so I don't want to implement any hacks.
P.S. reason for my current dislike of enclosures is the extra cables/space/noise/heat they generate and also the current debate over interfaces (would like to use eSATA or USB3 to get fastest transfer speeds).
Thanks in advance for any replies!

    3 drives to me = RAID3
Apple Pro RAID card: find a good external - threads discussing options - look at AMUG reviews and elsewhere. CalDigit or something. Maybe RAID6 capability.
I would use internal drives in software RAID0.
And the only interface for external, SATA only cases, none of these consumer cases for multi interface, though OWC has a popular RAID5 4 drive setup you might like.
Use OWC SSD or two for system, and 3 x 2TB WD Black RAID0. No trouble with that. Just lots and lots of clones and backups is all.

  • Finder crashes with OS 10.6.8. With or without any apps running finder will hang repeatedly causing the iMac to hang also. I upgraded from 10.5.8 to 10.6.8 recently and finder was OK for 1 week. How do I submit a crash log?

Folllowing an upgrade from 10.5.8 to 10.6.8  (Snow Leopard) Finder frequently hangs, causing any open apps and the iMac to hang. This will occur whether or not any 3rd party apps or Safari are open. About 50% of the time trying to empty the trash will cause a finder hang. There are no error messages to let me know what code such a hang may be. Repeated attempts to force quit the iMac always fail, so I have to hard crash using the power button. Multiple attempts are required to successfully restart via the login screen. I do not know whether any other apps, such as Safari or screen saver may be involved. I think a crash log would help, however I am not sure whether I should look in: useres/library/logs/DaiagnosticReports or : users/library/logs/CrashReporter, and whether I should attempt to open the latest in either in Console or Text edit and then post here. Also, is this the appropriate site to post a log in the hope that Apple may look at it? I have read through threads on Apple finder, and am stunned to find that after all these OS-X versions finder is still buggy and inferior to MS Explorer and Apple appears to be in denial. Maybe their efforts are in devices such as iPhones and iPads? Ths issue never occured in OS 10.5.8.

  • I would like to upgrade my Imac 8,1 from 1 Gb to 4Gb RAM. Apple does not have memory for this Imac but recommended Crucial, Kingston or Ramjet. I have noticed a difference in pricing and would like to know if there are differences in their chips?

I would like to upgrade my Imac 8,1 (20 inch early 2008) from 1Gb RAM to 4 Gb. Apple no longer provides 800Mhz2DDR2 SDRAM but recommended Crucial, Kingston or RAMjet.
Are there any difference in these vendors chips as the price range is from $51-$99?
    Thanks, Johng

I'm coming late to this string because I now have the same issue as gillnfly and you have all solved virtually all of my questions - thanks!  My only other question to add to what you've already said is - I currently have 1 G of memory installed.  Can I ADD a 2G card to get to 3G (probably more than I need), or should cards match if you have more than 1 - i.e., 2 1G cards or replace existing 1G with a 2G, or even 2 2G cards (way more than I need).
Thanks for your spot-on comments!  I already found the OWC website and you've confirmed that's the best place to go.

  • I want to upgrade to Lightroom 5, but I'm concerned about compatibility with my 2008 intel Core 2 Duo iMac with only 4G of Ram.  Will I be able to run Lighroom 5 if I upgrade from Snow Leopard to Lion?

I want to upgrade to Lightroom 5, but I'm concerned about compatibility with my 2008 intel Core 2 Duo iMac with only 4G of Ram.  Will I be able to run Lightroom 5 okay if I upgrade from Snow Leopard to Lion?  What will happen to the applications that aren't 64-bit compatible?  Also the Eye-one Display 2 colorimeter to calibrate the monitor will not run on Lion, so that will be an expensive upgrade to an i1DisplayPro. Is the upgrade important enough to offset the expense?  I have an Epson R2000 printer.  Will there be problems with the drivers if I upgrade to Lion?  It would be great to hear from other mac users who are also photographers and who print their own photos.

Before upgrading to Lion be sure to read this link:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6271
    Adobe lists these requirements:
    http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop-lightroom/tech-specs.html
Looking at http://www.everymac.com/ even the earliest 2008 iMac was fully 64 bit, even though Boot Camp doesn't support 64 bit Windows on that machine.

    Help

Audiobooks are currently a one-time only download (which I think is a requirement from audible.com who supply them). Have you not got them on a backup ? If not (and I don't know if this is what you've already tried) then you can try contacting iTunes support and see if they will grant you a re-download : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/ - click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page, then Purchases, Billing & Redemption

  • I recently purchased, from the APP store, Lion for use on my MacBook Pro.  I wish to upgrade my IMac to Lion also.  Do I need to make a 2nd purchase or will the single purchase suffice?  If the single purchase will suffice, how do I facilitate ?

I recently purchased, from the APP store, Lion for use on my MacBook Pro.  To upgrade my IMac to Lion, need I make an additional purchase?  If not, how do I facilitate the IMac upgrade?

No, you do not need to re purchase Lion. You can re download Lion on all your authorized Macs using the same Apple ID.
How to re download apps from the Mac App Store:
Open the App Store. From the menu bar click Store > Sign In
Click Purchases from the top of the App Store window.
Select which apps you want to re download. Then right or control click where you see Installed  then click Install.

  • How can i upgrade from iphoto 7.1.5 to 8.1.2 on an older iMac running OSX 10.6.8 ?

How can I upgrade from iphoto 7.1.5 to 8.1.2 on an older iMac running OSX 10.6.8 ?

With the above listed config that I have (iphoto 7.1.5 on an older iMac running OSX 10.6.8), how can I move my iPhoto library from this old iMac (2006) to my NEW iMac (2011) that is running iPhoto 9.5.1 ?
To open an iPhoto 7.1.x version in iPhoto '11 you need to run the iPhoto Library Upgrader. See this Support document:
iPhoto '11: About the Library Upgrade
Download and install the upgrader,  then run it on your iPhoto 7.1.5 library. After that, iPhoto will be able to open your library and upgrade it to version 9.5.1. And you will be able to merge the libraries with if Library Manager.

I have just purchased an iphone 4 and it needs me to have the latest itunes on my computer.  I have not upgraded by computer for some time and thought this is probably the time to do it. My computer is an imac intel with Tiger 10.4.11. I want to upgrade my Imac from tiger 10.4.11 to Mac OS 10.6 Snow Leopard or higher.  What is the best way to do this?  Appreciate any help as I am out of practice. I used to be an old hand at this, but things have moved on since I didn't upgrade or use my computer as much!

The best way, really the only way, is to purchase Snow Leopard.
    Online (UK): http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
Elsewhere: call the phone number in the Apple Online Store.
    Apple's price is $19.99, £14.00, €18.
Snow Leopard is not available to download from any legitimate source.
Once you install Snow Leopard, upgrade iTunes to version 10.7 or the latest, iTunes 11.
iTunes 10.6.3 is the last version of iTunes to support Mac computers with Mac OS X 10.5.8 with either Intel or PowerPC processors, but since you have an Intel iMac, the best solution is to purchase Snow Leopard. Leopard is no longer available from Apple and prices from aftermarket vendors can be unreasonably high.

I want to upgrade my Imac from 10.6.8 to 10.8.5. Will I lose all of my programs and need to reinstall them? ie Microsoft office and Adobe suite.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You won't lose any app by upgrading to OS X Mountain Lion, but you have to make a backup of your files with Time Machine before upgrading and check that your apps are compatible > http://www.roaringapps.com If your applications aren't supported in Mountain Lion, delete them or update them before upgrading to OS X Mountain Lion.
After checking it, upgrade to OS X Mountain Lion. OS X Mavericks will be launched in weeks and will include new features, so you may want to wait until the Mavericks release > http://www.apple.com/osx/preview

After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mavericks if your computer meets the requirements.

    Upgrading to Yosemite
You can upgrade to Yosemite from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Yosemite can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for FREE.
    Upgrading to Yosemite
To upgrade to Yosemite you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Download Yosemite from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Yosemite is free. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
