Upgrading from iPhone 4s to 6 before iOS 8

My wife has an iPhone 4s running ios 7. Her new iPhone 6 just arrived. We are backing her phone up to iCloud. Question: do we need to upgrade this old phone to ios 8 before transferring everything to new phone or can we just restore from the cloud even though the last backup is iOS 7? I ask because I don't think she has enough space avail for the upgrade on old iPhone. Thanks.
No. You do not need to update the old phone to iOS 8 first. Personally though, I would recommend making the backup of the old phone on your computer. Much more will be backed up if you make an encrypted backup on your computer than the backup to iCloud.
Start iTunes 12 on your computer. If you don't have the latest version of iTunes on your computer download it or update the version you do have. Start iTunes on your computer, connect your iPhone, and then select the device icon in the top bar of iTunes. This will open a left sidebar where you should select General. The option to create the encrypted back will appear there. Do not forget the password you used to make the backup!

Forgive me if this has already been discussed; I didn't spot any topics for it right off hand.
I've held off on upgrading my second generation iPod Touch to iOS 4, specifically waiting for 4.1 to release. I know what features will and will not work on the 2G iPod Touch, but I'm definitely interested in those features that will work.
My question at present is, can I upgrade from iPhone OS 3.1.3 (my currently installed version) directly to iOS 4.1 without having to stop off at 4.0.2 first? iTunes currently shows only the 4.0.2 version as being available, although I know otherwise. It also doesn't give me the option to check for new versions.. only the option to upgrade to 4.0.2. If I have to upgrade to 4.0.2 first, then so-be-it, but if there is a way to go straight to 4.1, I think I'd like that much better.Thanks to everybody for the quick advice. Upgrading from IPhone 3 to IPhone 4
I am trying to upgrade from IPhone 3 to IPhone 4, by restoring from iTunes. I've followed the steps on Apple site (check for upgrades, back-up old phone, go through steps on new iphone, select restore from back-up, choose back up to restore from). It went through everything and then for no apparent message came up with an error message saying restore from back up had not completed. Now when I try to start the process again, iTunes launches straight into backing up and syncing my NEW phone, even though the who process hasn't yet completed. Am in a complete loop - it won't let me start the process again from scratch or allow me to restore again. Help!

i upgraded my iphone 4 OS yesterday to ios 5, today morning my phone is not working, i am not able to click any button and also its not allowing me to switch off the phone and restart. Anyone having similar issues?

Take the following steps:
1) while connected to wifi, toggle off then back on the Show All Music and iTunes Match options shown in my original post. Important: I did this step before, but wasn't connected to wifi, and my music disappeared. Subsequently, I connected to wifi and turned off and then back on those options and everything came back though it was grayed out and my only option was to download music.
2) To get streaming over cellular back, go into Settings>General>Cellular and scroll down to the "Use Cellular Data for:" options and make sure the iTunes option is set to 'On'
The above steps will bring back the streaming capability which seemed to go away when you update to 6.1. It didn't ACTUALLY go away, but something about the update toggled off the iTunes option in step 2 above.
I did a final test by turning off wifi, opening Music app and selecting a song. It played successfully without downloading! Crossing my fingers, but I think I'm good to go!

Does anyone know how to upgrade from 4.1 to 4.3 ios?
After being tricked by the fast talking smoothy helper at Apple store in London to buy a micky mouse ipodtouch (fourth generation) two years ago I am stuck at ios 4.1 and find that all the useful applications need 4.3 or more. So I went to the trouble of letting the macbook stay open all night to load yet another micky mouse version of itunes so that I can upload the more recent version of ios and now (since I don't want to continually have a lot of rubbish on the ipod I disabled the automatic sync "feature") I can only go round in circles whereby the only real possibility left is to turn on the autosync feature. I have had messages like "your ipod will be completely erased if you proceed" and "do you wish to fiddle another few days with this nasty system, then click on continue" and so on.
Does anyone know how to upgrade from 4.1 to 4.3 ios?
That would be great (maybe) because otherwise I will toss this children's waste product on the floor and set up my HD camera to show how easy it is to smash the brightly lit screen into pieces and relieve myself of trash which Apple sell to unsuspecting gullible humans who believe that they are not being tricked by such a nice company who produce shiny colourful gadgets which only work for a month or two before becoming 100% obsolete.
Great to hear from those who have wasted many months of their lives and discovered how to trick the system into doing a simple update operation!
I am insulted by the tricks that fool many and that apple pretend are "necessary".

1. There is nothing "mobile" under Application Support. For whatever reason.
2. Devious - that Apple has set up iPod to not show in Finder - a red herring and sign that corruption is visible.
I will try iFunBox next and it sounds like they provide this for the more serious users but use a trivial name to excuse further strangeness.

and so we are back to where we always land - the user is left in the Apple designed sabotage situation which annoyed me so much initially.
"Most users will give up at this point, loose all the data or buy yet another disposable from Apple. Less than 3% will work their way to this site and 90% of the 3% will leave the iPod to gather dust in the hope that someone will help later. In all, Apple gains, since people blame themselves for "mistakes" which Apple programmed to throw out users who do not take the 100% Apple path. But Illaass and myself still play the game of "trying to fix" something which Apple don't allow." was the comment which I was going to write but decided against it, adding no value to the conversation other than explaining one reality which we all hoped could be wrong but which I thought to have a very high chance of being closer to the truth.

Recheck: Under Application Support "mobilesync" folder has appeared (MobileMeSyncClient has also appeared [while again trying to update iPod] with zero size) - Good news, a Backup file is there, but it is only 3GB while my iPod has 32GB and is close to full (800MB free space).

So it looks like I may have lost all the important pictures documenting various items all around Europe for the last two years - luckily I moved a year ago from the iPod toy camera to a Panasonic real camera with SD card which can be read on any computer. Hence important items lost may only be older than one year rather than the most recent items.
Glad I have changed to Panasonic since they don't try to screw you when you don't use their system.
I will now check the "more information" rather than just click on "OK" since I am of the 3% who "don't accept cr*p".
For full information I quote that the iPod now shows a screen with a USB ikon, an upward arrow and an iTunes ikon (all micky mouse language which reduces transparant, clear and technical discussion and thus covers the trail of "where things went wrong").
The iPod is still attached to the computer but the above MMTALK may mean that the iPod should be attached via USB to the mac. I record much of this activity on Video to be able to later prove EXACTLY what occurred, rather than having to rely on screenshots and opinions. We are after all dealing with important items which may later be required to be shown in court, as evidence against fraudsters.

But since I have not removed the USB and keep returning to this message I am able to write for a few seconds (now 30 seconds or more) and the message remains on the screen but not blocking this conversation. It appears to be random but in fact as you can later see from the video, it is not reappearing each periodic number of seconds but as I reach a new comment.
I will try to close iTunes so that this can be stopped (I clicked on OK and it appeared another few times, each time I clicked on ok and now it has left me in peace to write here although iTunes is still not yet closed).
Difficult to log down all the strange behaviour but I think you can get the gist of what is going on.

Should I remove the iPod and stop iTunes? I have a nasty feeling turning to indifference since I have video footage which will verify all the above in a court of law if later required. The truth must always win over any devious attempts at forcing people to do things they don't want to ;-)

Upgrade from iPhone 4 to 4S and all photos in Camera Roll went missing
I upgraded from iPhone 4 to iPhone4S. I did a restored from my last backup before the upgrade and all my photos in my camera roll has disappeared!
What I discover is that it is still stored in the iPhone 4S as it took up 25GB of storage. However, it is not accessible inside the iPhone 4S. The photos are stuck in the iPhone 4S and taken up a lot of storage in the iPhone. Please help!What I meant was I bought a new iPhone 4S and restored my backup of my old iPhone 4 into iPhone 4S and the camera roll photos that were in the old iPhone 4 did not show up in my iPhone 4S despite occupying space in the iPhone 4S ...

I've upgraded from iPhone 4 to 5, and can't upload from iCloud
I've upgraded from iPhone 4 to 5, and I'm got as far as 'restore from iCloud'. And it says iOS 6.1.3. Required. So i went back to freshly backed up iPhone 4 and checked that it had iOS 6.1.3 all ready. There's no updates on settings icon
Personally, when upgrading to a new device and wanting to download from a backup of the older device to set up the new device, I ALWAYS do the backup and restore from my computer's itunes. It's much more reliable than icloud.

I upgraded from iPhone 3GS to iPhone 6. Everything converted fine. Yesterday I deleted an app in error. When I downloaded the software it from iTunes ( did this many times on the old 3GS), my account is no longer recognized by the app's host servers (Playtika), even though it did after the initial conversion. Can I go back and re-sync just one app from my old phone?
Try deleting what is called the iPod Photo Cache.

and now you can recuperate your deleted pictures from a folder or after 30 days they will be deleted. -
I upgraded from iPhone 4 to a 5 and my emails have duplicated. Those I received and read on my Mac this morning have come in again and show unread so I have 2 of all of them. Any idea what setting is causing this? Thanks.
You may have to try deleting all the music from your phone (by going to Settings>General>Usage>Music, swipping All Music and tapping Delete), then sync it all back on with iTunes in order to fix this.

I am trying to upgrade my iPhone 4 to the latest iOS via iTunes, but I keep getting a message saying that an error [-5000] occurred and continuing will delete all content on my iPhone. What's the solution?
okay I've done everything regarding the transfer process (via file>transfer purchases) and syncing, so everything on my iPhone device seems to have been transferred to my iMac... however, I still get that message ("There are purchased items on the iPhone..."), trying to upgrade the iOS Have tried several times the same process of hitting transfer purchases via file, but nothing seems to make that message go away! Would have been nice to know which files I actually do need to transfer, which I don't get any info on of course...

I upgraded from iPhone 3G to 4S a few days ago. When setting up the new 4S, I choose to restore my last 3G backup. It started by updating the OS to version 5.1 (9B179) then restored my apps and setting. Everything went well except that I realized I do not have the new apps which come with the 4S, like FaceTime, HD video and Siri.
What should I do to correct this?
Thank you in advance for any help on this.Ah, FaceTime is not an app, either. It's accessed by tapping the FaceTime button when you are in the contacts app and have selected a contact. This can also be done from the Phone app under the Contacts tab, or during a call, you can switch to FaceTime.

That does do that. However it is a temporary backup and not the most reliable. Make sure you also go into file > Transfer purchases from _______ to make sure you save your music and apps. though the article that wjosten posted is correct for the backup as well. But article HT1414 is better for info on backing up.

Problem upgrading an iPhone 4 CDMA (Verizon) to ios 5. Can anyone help?
Trying to upgrade an iPhone 4 CDMA (Verizon) to ios 5 and am getting and error saying - "The iPhone could not be restored. This device isn't eligible for the requested build." It is currently running ios 4.2.10.
It completes a backup, does the extract, then the error message above comes up when iTunes shows it as 'verifing iPhone restore with Apple'
Phone was just reset to factory settings when the device was transferred between phone numbers on my Verizon account last night.
