Upgrading from kernel 2.4.32 using pacman

i had to install arch with kernel version 2.4 because of the NIC driver that would not compile under 2.6. now i want to update the system but when i tried pacman -Syu i got a whole lot of ERROR: kernel too old messages. after that kernel would panic no matter what i tried passing during boot. i gave up and re-installed the system with kernel 2.4. what is the best way to upgrade the system and is there a way to avoid all of the previous problems? is it better to first upgrade kernel by itself and than all other packages or the other way around? thanks...
p.s. if i compiled the NIC driver using kernel 2.4 will it still work after upgrading to 2.6?

Pierre wrote:Imho the current Arch version does not run with kernels lower than 2.6.16 (or was it 2.6.9, I am not sure). Anyway: If you want to use kernel24 you have to downgrade glibc and compile (everything) yourself.
i am not sure i understand... is there no way to upgrade from 2.4 to 2.6 using pacman?

For now i ignore kernel upgrades.

Does your keyboard not work at all or only in X? If your keyboard doesn't work at all, boot into a live CD (so that your keyboard works) and post your /var/log/everything.log. If your keyboard works everywhere but in X, post your /var/log/Xorg.0.log.
-- edit: If you are positive that you ONLY upgraded your kernel, just boot a live CD and post your everything.log.

The first step in Upgrading... is to Snow Leopard = OS X 10.6.x
It is Not available as a download... It is a Paid Upgrade.
    Do this first...
Check that your Mac meets the System Requirements for Snow Leopard...
    Snow Leopard Tech Specs
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
If so... Purchase a Snow Leopard Install Disc...
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
    Other countries...

After the Successful Install, run Software Update to get the latest updates for Snow Leopard.
Be sure to make a Backup of your Current System Before Upgrading...
    Next...
    Upgrade to Mountain Lion
With Regard to ML...  Check here for compatibility of 3rd party Software you may be using... Also note that Rosetta is no longer supported in Lion and Mountain Lion...

You should also consider more RAM... Get the Maximum you can for your Mac...
It is important to get the Correct and Matching RAM

  • Huge memory leaks after upgrading from kernel 2.6.38(?)

My system began leaking memory some months ago and I've little to no idea what is causing it. The closest hint I can give is that I think these problems started around upgrading from Linux 2.6.38 to 2.6.39 and have continued with 3.0 aswell. Sometimes my whole system freezes due to extensive swapping (HDD usage led stays lit), sometimes it stops after consuming almost all of my 4 GB RAM.
I think the leak has to come from inside the kernel because all sysmon apps claim no application is eating too much RAM yet the system memory consumption is at 100 % or even using swap. Even after I kill Xorg the memory usage will stay at least at 2.0 GB, when it should be less than half a gig.
I'd like to guess the blame is on Nouveau, because it was giving me a hell of a time back with Linux 2.6.39. It had a habit of freezing my system when re-enabling suspended compositing (both with Kwin and Mutter). Also video playback was corrupted sometimes. These probs have since been fixed with Linux 3.0.
I cannot name any spesific app that might trigger this memory leaking. I don't play any games and mainly use Firefox, Chromium and VLC day in, day out.
There seems to be absolutely no way of reclaiming the reserved memory than rebooting the whole system. I have even tried unloading Nouveau.
I am currently running the [testing] repo with ~daily upgrades.

OK, this kind of surprised me. No wonder I couldn't find any relevant stuff while googling for kernel issues. I have had Strigi disabled for some time now because it is miserably broken, but I now disabled the whole Nepomuk too. Let's see if my problem now goes away or what...
The release of KDE 4.7 Beta 1 actually lines up with the launch of Linux 2.6.39 so this really might be the case. I moved to KDE 4.7 already with the first beta.

  • Can I upgrade from Tiger to snow leopard using an external DVD drive

I've been trying to upgrade to Snow Leopard from Tiger but keep nothing happens. I keep getting a grey folder with a question mark on it. Can anyone tell me what this means?

If you have another Mac with Firewire, you can use it's Optical Drive as a big Firewire Optical, put the Install disc in the other Mac, boot the other Mac in to
    Target mode...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661
Connect a fw cable, use the Otion key on this one to choose the Install Disc in the other Mac.
Can I install if I make a bootable copy to my firewire external?
Yes, especially if you have a small 5 to 9GB Partition, you can use DU to Restore the Install Disc to that.

  • How to upgrade from PowerPC G4 w/1GB using CS2 to Mac Pro w/2GB running CS3

    Hello. I have a Mac PowerPC G4 with 1GB of RAM and I'm running OS X 10.4.11. I'm using CS2 ver 9.0.2.
I have a new Mac Pro with 2GB of RAM and I'm running OS X v10.5.2.
I would like to run CS3 on my new Mac Pro.
Could anyone guide me in accomplishing this? I'd like to buy the upgrade to CS3 of course.
I can't figure out how to do this because of course I want to just load CS3 on the new computer but I want to pay for just the upgrade. And, if I buy the upgrade, I'm not sure my old computer will run CS3.
    Thanks,
    Deena

    Deena,
In addition to the previous comments, before you do this though, I recommend that you put more RAM in your computers (particularly the G4) so they don't choke trying to run CS3, your operating system, and whatever else you have running. Also check your hard drive free space, particularly on your older Mac, so that you have scratch disk space and place to store at least some of your images.
And in preparation for the CS3 installation (which is really quite easy), be sure you boot off the System Disk and use Disk Utility to repair permissions and the disk and boot off the DiskWarrior disk and run repairs as well. Repeat repair permissions after the installation. These maintenance routines will help insure that your new CS3 runs well.
You will find that you have both CS2 and CS3 on your drive. You can safely uninstall CS2 if you wish.
If you have questions about any of this, please get back to us.

  • Upgrading from P3e to P6 enterprise using existing licences.

HELP !Please provide assistance especially from Primavera oracle agent to upgrade ourusing existing licences from P3e to P6 enterprise.

I can't say for certain. I can only tell you what I did.
Based on my understanding of how iMovie works, the Project file contains paths to the Event video clips in your iMovie Events, paths to the video clips in iPhoto (or Aperture), paths to music, paths to photos in iPhoto or Aperture.
One of these that can be automatically updated is to move Events to another drive within iMovie.
Another "automatic" update is to move the default iPhoto library to a different disk, but with the same name. That should still work.
However, iMovie will not make the leap from iPhoto to Aperture for either stills or videos, as far as I know.
When I switched to Aperture recently, I brought in my iPhoto photos as referenced, and left the videos in place.
Alternatively, you could bring in your iPhoto photos to Aperture Library (not referenced) but leave the iPhoto Library intact somewhere. You could delete images or clips if you were absolutely sure they were not referenced in iMovie.
I am enjoying Aperture, but it is difficult to make a clean break.

  • Upgrading from iPhone 3 to a used iPhone 3GS

    Hi,
I just got the iPhone 4, and would like to give my old iPhone 3GS to my father, who uses an iPhone 3.
    Is this as simple as:
    -wiping all my data off
    -switching the SIM card
    -sync with my father's itunes
I know that the complete phone wipe puts the phone into the state it was in when first purchased, so I'm leery of doing that before double-checking.
Or, am I destined to have to go to an Apple or ATT store?
    thanks!

Any help fixing this would be greatly appreciated.

I have been trying to isolate the problem a little further. I re-installed (with just the base and sudo) and after upgrading pacman rebooted and it worked without fail. Then I installed libusb and libusb-compat which where required when I tried to upgrade just the kernel using
    pacman -S kernel26
which initially failed because of the missing dependencies libusb and libusb-compat. I then re-booted and that worked without a problem.
I then upgraded to Kernel 2.6.39 using the above command and then it hung on rebooting. I saved the logs at each stage.

  • Be carefull when upgrading from Panther to Tiger

If you choose to upgrade from Panther to Tiger by using the Erase and install option on the Tiger DVD install disk, your XServe RAID won't mount. The problem seems to be that the driver for the RAID won't be updated in the process.
The solution for me was (by advice of Apple Support) to reinstall Panther. My RAID came up fine and I then did a upgrade to Tiger using the update and install.

Mattur:When I restart to install the OS, it goes into a Kernel Panic and tells me to restart.I take it to mean that you mean you put the install disk and open it and at the prompt you restart, and it goes into the kernel panic. I notice too that you sayI can reinstall Panther with the disk the computer came with , but I can't install Tiger..In other words there is a problem is with the Tiger disk.
Are you using a Full Retail Version of Tiger? Computer specific versions or update versions will not work.
If you are planning to install Tiger check out System Requirements to be sure your computer complies.

  • Upgrade from 2.6.15 to 2.6.16

    Blah --
I just did a pacman -Syu to get the lastest everything, and my system seems  hosed. The relevant change (I think) was the upgrade from kernel 2.6.15 to 2.6.16.  I get something like this on boot:
    mounting /dev/root on /new_root failed
pivot_root: no such file or directory
and then a BusyBox prompt.  I can't mount anything at all, which is weird: Not my SATA harddrive on /dev/sda1 nor my IDE harddrive on /dev/hdc1.
I know there are a lot of posts on this topic, but most of them seem to be from the /dev/discs/ vs. /dev/sda1 thing, which I have right.
As luck would have it, my laptop ate my last CD which I was trying to burn Knoppix on, so that's pretty much all the information I can give until tomorrow

    Hi all,
I'm experiencing the same problem after upgrading from 2.6.15 to 2.6.16. I get the following upon booting:
mount: Mounting /dev/root on /new_root failed: No such device or address
pivot_root: pivot_root: No such file or directory
umount: /initrd: No such file or directory
umount: /initrd: No such file or directory
    /linuxrc: 382: /sbin/busybox: not found
Freeing unused kernel memory: 244k freed
    BusyBox v1.01 (2006.03.10-22:56+0000) Built-in shell (ash)
Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands.
/bin/sh: can't access tty; job control turned off
So I went to a backup kernel and tried to rebuild the initrd:
    # mkinitrd auto
    Checking Input...
ERROR: Your ramdisk size (4096 KB) is too low! It must be at least 16384 KB.
Note also that I'm getting a lot of these messages during the boot process, no matter what kernel I choose:
FATAL: Could not load /lib/modules/2.6.15.4-ARCH/modules.dep: No such file or directory
Any ideas on this one? I'm stuck! Thank you!

  • System freezes when attempting to upgrade from Snow Leopard to Lion

I hope someone can help me out there.  I have downloaded the Lion upgrade install program and built an install disk on my jump drive using Lion Diskmaker 2.0.2, but when I tried to upgrade from Snow Leopard to Lion using the jump drive, the install freezes at 24% and I cannot reboot or anything.  It just keeps coming back to the install screen.  Any suggestions?

This could be due to a number of causes. If you have the Lion installer application, then I suggest you put it in your Downloads folder. Now do this:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
When you've done the above you should now double-click on the Lion installer application in your Applications folder. When prompted click on the Install button. Note that you will not use the flash drive you made as you shouldn't need it. And, this will avoid any issues with a bad flash drive installer.

  • Do I need to backup my files when upgrading from tiger to leopard?

Not sure if I need to backup all my files before upgrading from Tiger to Leopard (to use a Mac Box Set), have bought a Seagate 1TB FreeAgent GoFlex Home hard drive to back up on. Was told I wouldn't need a WiFi router but have now discovered I would need a dual Ethernet port to be connected to the internet and the hard drive which my Mac mini only has access for one, either the internet or the hard drive. So I ask do I really need to back up before upgrading? or can you get dual Ethernet ports?

Only if your data has any value to you.
If everything works perfectly, you should lose nothing.
If anything goes wrong, it is possible to lose data.
Personally I don't want to trust my data to everything working perfectly so I back it up.
As to the question of dual ethernet ports, you don't need them actually. If you create a LAN with a router then the multiple ports on your router will allow you to connect to both the internet and disk at once.
