Upgrading from one drive to two in RAID1 (ATA)

When I built this computer using a 915G Combo MB, it was the first time I'd ever attempted something like it.  I was just relieved that it worked!  Now, I'd really like to install a Mirror drive and upgrade my system to RAID1.  I am using a Maxtor ATA Hard Drive and want to install a second identical one.  Did I blow it? Do I have to reinstall my OS and all my programs all over again?
Any help someone can give me would be extremely appreciated.  I don't want to start and then run into a brick wall.  THANKS!

Thanks for your help.  This is my first time ever putting together a computer, and also my first time participating in a community forum, so even the term, "sticky" had me a little bit confused!  But, after fifteen minutes -- yes, it really did take me that long to figure out what a sticky is -- I read yours and all I can say is, thank you so much, for taking time to author such an informative posting.

  • Mac Pro Upgradable from one core to two cores?

If I were to buy a Mac Pro with One 3.33GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon “Westmere” would I be able to get a second One 3.33GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon “Westmere” and put it in later?

From what I could grasp at this forum and general googling, you can totally upgrade the Mac Pro with another processor later. People have done it to 2006, 2008 and 2009 models. Take a look at AnandTech and also www.o0o.it.
It doesn't seem to be an easy procedure, but if you had some experience with computer parts before it would not be a too much of a trouble.
There are two main issues you can face:
    1. You need to make sure that your Mac Pro will have two processor slots on the motherboard. I wasn't able to find an exact confirmation of that on the net.
    2. You will most definitely have only one heatsink installed, so you will need to buy a second one. Apparently, they are not identical, as in Apple's parts list they are listed as "A" and "B", but I'm not sure about that. Check the www.welovemacs.com they seem to have one on sale. Btw, it also looks like the 2010 model and 2009 models have the identical heatsinks, so you should be able to find it on eBay.
I'm looking at the Mac Pro myself at the moment, and it seems that there is literally no reason to buy more dual-CPU models. Xeons will not cost peanuts in the future, but they will definitely be cheaper than now.

Buy it for the other computer. Mountain Lion is preinstalled on the new Mac, but you can only use it in the new one

  • Moving files from one drive to another

How can I move a batch of files from one drive to another using Bridge CS4?

There are two methods.  One involves your operating system and the other uses Bridge.
Using Microsoft (sorry to you Mac users) have Windows Explorer open to the directory containing your files.  Click and drag the directory from one drive to another.  Conversely if you want to copy just a selection of the files follow this routine.
Create a duplicate named directory in the destination drive.  Select the file you wish to move and do so from directory to directory.
In Bridge it is even easier.  In Bridge ensure that the Folders sub pane is open and visibile.  Just click on the source directory and click and drag it to the destination drive.
Testing on my part (I routinely move up to 30 gigabytes at a time) has demonstrated that Bridge adds a little time to the process depending on the size of the source files.  I suspect that this has to do with additional overhead of the program.
To be safe I would recommend that you do use the copy method instead of moving the directory.  This is a failsae in case any problems crop up during the process.  It takes mere moments to delete the source directory after the copy routine has run.

  • 40+ mbps Transfer from one drive w/ FW800

I have a 2011 MBP, 2.3ghz i7.  I am attempting to back up a couple of drives and using the FW800 port to do so.
I am transfering from an external RAID 0, to another external drive via  FW800.
I have the RAID attached to the computer via the FW800 port.
I am only getting an average 40+ mbps transfer of data, despite being on FW800 which I thought was to be around 100mbps!!!!!?????
What gives?  Is there an inherant loss when daised from one drive to another?
Thanks, BTW APPLE, for removing the only real great expansion NEED on your PROFESSIONAL laptops: the pci-e slot.  That SD card slot is SSOOoooo useful and productive for me.

Like drsailer says use Target Mode. You might run into difficulty drag copying your failing drive. When I do this I use Carbon Copy Cloner:
    http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html
    or Super Duper.
CCC will make an exact bootable backup of your current hard drive in your "new" machine.
Use the new machine as the target. If the two are close in specs it should work if not it might require an archive and install to get it to work.

  • Copy File From One Drive to Another & Missing Keyword Tags

    Hi,
I use LR 2.7.  I want to copy one file from one drive to another drive with the same file name.  I thought you could drag the file, but it doesn't copy over the file in the other drive, can you explain what I have to do?
Also, I tried to import the folder into another drive, but it doesn't copy the keyword tags.  Is there a way to do this?
    Thanks
    Barb

    Hey Barb,
Well, if you use the Year/Month/Day/pictures_here  format, none of the folders contains a massive amount of folders.  It's not the number of folders that generates problems, it's having them all in _one_ folder that creates slow-down issues.  Imagine if you had a deck of cards; look for one card... you have to go through all 52 cards to find it.  But, if you broke it down into the 4 groups, you only have to go through 13, which is lots faster.  Now imagine going through 15000 instead of 52...
Look at the way lightroom can automatically import by date;  it has several preset formats.  If you pick one of those, then when you import new photos, it will automatically create any missing ones, and you have lots less to do.
Depending on how much work you have already done, you might consider making a new catalog and just importing all of your photos again, and let it create everything quickly for you.
You could save all of your "edit" changes by writing out all of the xmp files first.  But with 15000 files in one directory, this will double it to 30000 (one per image!), but will preserve all of your edits if you choose to make a new catalog approach.
As for combing catalogs, once you have one catalog the way you want it, you can select "import from catalog" and it will suck it into a new one, thus combining the catalogs.  The only problem I can see is that it will import it in the format you already have it, so you have to organize it manually before you import it.  Otherwise, you'll get your old format and your new format in the one catalog (but can then move pictures around if you need to).
Personally,  I'd go the 'write xmp files, create new catalog' approach.  Then just recreate my collections, etc.
But either way you do it, it will take some time processing, as that's a lot of files to start with!
    Ciao!

  • Can you move events from one drive to another easily?

I've just bought an external firewire drive to dedicate to my Sony HD camcorder material.
I've only imported 30 mins or so of stuff onto the Mac's internal drive with iMovie '08, and would like to know if anyone's managed to easily copy 'events' from one drive to another to merge/split content.
Is it just a case of copying event folders from the iMovie Events folder to the external drive, but if so do you have to specify a particular path?
Similarly, can you just move the individual 'Projects' or archive to DVD etc as they will invariably take up lots of space for longer footage? Does the projects file just hold references to the assembled clips, in which case moving events would scupper things as I seem to have several movie files in there already though these may just be things I uploaded to .Mac to test out.
This may all be a bit of trial and error. Hopefully clips are only references unlike the pretty huge but self-contained iMovie 6 HD project packages. This also raises issues about how to easily backup all your 'events'.

    Observation:
Just imported 15mins of video from the Sony.
When you click import you are asked which drive to save to.
As well as the Mac's internal drive, all my attached USB drives which are formatted as Mac OS Extended (journaled) appear as targets to save to as well as teh Firewire drive.
I selected the Firewire drive and don't recall an option to create a sub-folder. After import a new top level folder of iMovie Events was created, but no others.
Presumably iMovie Projects/Shared folders only exist on the boot drive.
I'm assuming that this structure will allow you to share movie Events between Macs using external drives.
Again, an assumption but I suspect iMovie scans all available suitable hard drives and checks what content is available in top level iMovie Events folders for non-boot drives as well as this folder in the user's Movies folder.
    Rambling observations over for now.

  • Transfer Upgrade from one line to another on the same plan.

Is it possible to transfer an upgrade from one line to a second line, and then have the phone that was used on the second line, be switched to the first line? If so, how would I go about doing this online?

Yes.  The account owner should be able to log in to MyVerizon and click on "Transfer this upgrade" when they view all of the upgrades available for their account.  If they don't have that option, another way is to just order the phone normally, then activate the new phone on the line it was ordered for briefly to accept the Terms & Conditions of the new contract.  Then you can activate the old phone from that line again, which will free the new phone up to be activated on the second line.
If you're getting a 4G phone, you'll want to call in to Customer Service before you start activating though, because the 4G SIM cards can complicate the activation process.

I have over 200 hours of HD video on 5 different TB Thunderbolt GRaid hard drives. I need to reorganize my projects, moving large files from one drive to another. Advice?

Do some testing to get your method working right with some less than important footage.
Copy/paste files where you want then.
Use the FCE Reconnect feature to tell FCE where the newly copied files reside.
Make sure the new location and files are working as expected with your Projects.
Delete the original files if no longer required.

  • Best way to copy large VM files from one drive to another?

Hi all, I am wondering what the best and fastest way there is to copy a large VM file from one drive to another (external drive to internal drive). Should the .pvm folder (in my case with Parallels) be zipped first? The files I need to copy range from 50 to 70gb. thx for any insight! ps. Even Bombich admits it's difficult for CCC to do...not clear why, but it does slow a full clone down to a crawl. I also have Chronosync at my disposal, but suspect the same is true there as well. Cheers!
    coocoo

I don't think it matters much which way you do the job. I use Parallels to compress by drives on a regular basis. If you want to copy a dynamic VM, which can grow to just about any size as required, to another drive you will use about the same amount of time zipping the VM - transfering the VM - unzipping the VM, as you would just moving the VM.
I've moved my VM files to a second partition that does not get cloned to my bootable backup that I create with SuperDuper. I've excluded my entire VM folder from Time Machine and just make zipped backups for each system after any large Service Pack Updates from Microsoft, or any intricate program installations. These get copied to a second partition on my Time Machine drive manually.
My VM's sizes are kept under control by using common Documents-Movies-Music folders for the Mac and the VM's. My VM's do not have the data files the programs use, they are on my Mac and get backed up every hour with Time Machine.
Reinstalling a VM just means deleting the broken copy, unzipping my latest backup, and putting into the same folder that Parallels knows to use. The data files are always accessible, even if they were created after my latest VM backup.

  • Plan to move photos from one drive to another - Need advice

My C: drive is almost out of space. I want to move my photos to a new internal hard drive.
In PSA SE 3, I've already tagged these photos. I want to know what's the easiest way to move my photos from one drive to another without losing my tags. Will "Reconnect Missing Files" find the moved files on a new drive if I keep my path the same (except for the drive letter)? Or will I have to reconnect the files manually one-at-a-time?
    Any advice is appreciated!

I might. I think I have MySQL installed at home. I have MS SQL Server at work. Is the application data file Access-compatible? I'd love to be able to just hack the underlying data store.

  • Bridge auto expands from one monitor to two when accessing folders

When I try to rename a folder Bridge auto expands from one monitor to two monitors and doesn't let me change the name. If I try to delete a photo it auto expands, lets me delete the photo but remains expanded across two monitors. This is a new experience I have had Bridge CC for about a year and this activity started on Friday. How do I prevent Bridge from automatically expanding across the two monitors?

A lot more information about your hardware and software is needed.
    BOILERPLATE TEXT:
If you give complete and detailed information about your setup and the issue at hand,
such as your platform (Mac or Win),
exact versions of your OS, of Photoshop (not just "CC", but something like CC2014.v.2.2) and of Bridge,
your settings in Photoshop > Preference > Performance
the type of file you were working on,
machine specs, such as total installed RAM, scratch file HDs, total available HD space, video card specs, including total VRAM installed,
what troubleshooting steps you have taken so far,
    what error message(s) you receive,

if you're having printing issues, indicate the exact make and model of your printer, paper size, image dimensions in pixels (so many pixels wide by so many pixels high). if going through a RIP, specify that too.
a screen shot of your settings or of the image could be very helpful too,

  • SATA Hardrive, Problems booting/formatting from one drive

I have the K8N Neo and can not format drive without it crashing (blue screen)
I think its probally just a config problem in the bios. What setting in the bios should the raid be set at and do I need the raid drivers provided with the board? The serial hard drive is booting from one drive only not mirroring etc. This is the second hard drive I have tried both doing the same things.
Please help this is driving me crazy.

It doesnt say anything about setting up the raid on these pages in the manual I have.
Ok the initial option enables the raid then there ate 2 more options to enable, SATA1&2 etc and ones relating to master/slave etc do any of these need to be changed on when using single hard drive. I have the MSI Nforce 2 board running a singe hard drive settings are alot different. Also does the dive have to be configured in any way using the raid bios ie setting it to stripe as in the Nforce 2 boards etc
