Upgrading from OS8.5 to OS9.2

I'm a cheap bugger, and I was given a G3 system the other day. It only has OS 8.5 on it, but There are some well priced OS 9.2.1 upgrade CDs on eBay.
http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260040074727&fromMakeTrack=tru e
Will these CDs upgrade my version, or will I have to buy a full copy. If so, I've heard that some copies will only install on certain hardware.
Can anyone educate this cheap newbie?
I may buy OSX down the road, but at $149CA, it's a bit steep for a fixer-upper system.

I can barely make it out on the image, but it says Mac OS 9.2.1 UPDATE CD. That means it is for updating an existing installation of Mac OS 9. Since you have Mac OS 8.5, it will not work. This document explains where this eBay item probably came from.
http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/MACOS9.2.1_Updating.pdf
And the Mac OS 9.2.1 is a free downloadable updater anyways, as are the updaters for 9.0.4, 9.1, and 9.2.2. You just need to get any version of 9 installed first.
I don't know which G3 you have, but you can buy Mac OS 9 installation CDs from these vendors (and others). Their prices are reasonable.

However, these are typically OEM disk, disks that came with new Macs. Therefore, you may want to specifically ask for a disk for your Mac (or one that is known to work with your Mac).

  • Tiger Upgrade from Panther - iTunes, Classic OS9 Issues

I just upgraded, doing an erase + install, from Panther to Tiger. Before upgrading I made a successful bootable copy of my PowerBook on my Fire Wire external 160 gig drive using Carbon Copy Cloner. Also, on that drive, I have a full, probably not bootable, backup of my PB from a few days before using a “sudo ditto –X –RsrcFrk {source drive} {target drive}” command that I’ve been using for years after reading about it in a Mac magazine(that is not the actual command, btw – I just don’t have it in front of me at the moment).
After the upgrade, I used Migration Assistant to bring over applications and settings. It found the cloned copy of my hard drive as another macintosh computer. One category that Migration Assistant did not bring over were Other Files that were kept on my external drive. I figured that those were just the large document files I generally keep on that external drive so as not to clutter up my smaller PowerBook drive. I have two questions that I have not been able to find exact answers to online:
*-How can I get my OS9 Classic apps working?* Now Contact is the main application I still use along with an Appleworks file or two. I see kind of conflicting information on the web as to how to install/activate OS9. Can I use the upgrade DVD for Tiger? Do I need to use my original Panther disk?
*-Can I get my iTunes Library back the way it was?* I’m big on podcasts and podcast subscriptions, and while the podcasts came over, the subscriptions did not, and what did come over is not organized well. There is no “Podcast” playlist over on the left side of the iTunes window. Also, none of my radio stations came over. I don’t have a lot of music in general, The few songs I’ve purchased from iTunes did not make it over. Non DRM stuff did make it over. Overall, I have about 6.5 gigs worth of iTunes material. Now, I don’t think I had the latest iTunes version installed in Panther – I’m not sure but I could check, I assume, by going into one of the backups.
Any advice or links to articles/advice would be much appreciated. Please let me know if I should post this on a more direct iTunes and OS9 board.
    Thank you.

You will need to reinstall OS 9 to get Classic working. It isn't installed as part of OS X. If your PB cannot boot OS 9 then you will need to install the special OS 9 version that was included with the computer's original Software Restore discs. AppleWorks is a separate program from Apple and will need to be reinstalled. In order to use Classic you will need OS 9.1 or later.
You might consider re-copying all your file folders from your backups since it appears you did not do a complete migration. Here's what you need to transfer:
Folders You Can Move to Your new Mac
From the Home folder copy the contents of Documents, Movies, Music, Pictures, and Sites.
    In your /Home/Library/ folder:
/Home/Library/Application Support/AddressBook (copy the whole folder)
/Home/Library/Application Support/iCal (copy the whole folder)
Also in /Home/Library/Application Support (copy whatever else you need including folders for any third-party applications)
    /Home/Library/Keychains (copy the whole folder)
    /Home/Library/Mail (copy the whole folder)
    /Home/Library/Preferences/ (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/iTunes (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/Safari (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/Calendars (copy the whole folder)
    If you want cookies:
    /Home/Library/Cookies/Cookies.plist
    /Home/Library/Application Support/WebFoundation/HTTPCookies.plist
    For Entourage users:
Entourage is in /Home/Documents/Microsoft User Data
    Also in /Home/Library/Preferences/Microsoft
    For FireFox:

  • How do I transfer email files when upgrading from OS9 to OS X(10.2.8)?

I upgraded to OS X(10.2.8) and was able to locate and open all the "old" files except the email files (so I reversed the upgrade).
Using Outlook Express in OS 9. Is there a way to find the email files from the OS 10 configuration or somehow export or transfer the email files prior to making the upgrade from 9 to 10?
    Any help is greatly appreciated.
eMac Mac OS 9.2.x Upgrading to OS X (10.2.8)
eMac   Mac OS 9.2.x   Upgrading to OS X (10.2.8)

Apple Mail will import mail from MS Outlook Express. The current version has the import function under File>Import Mailboxes. I think that the version which shipped with 10.2.8 did, too.
MSOE keeps its mail in the Microsoft User Data folder, typically either in the Documents folder or at the root level of your hard drive. If you tell Mail to search for mail form MSOE, it will try to find it in a Microsoft User Data folder. If you've moved your mail, tell Mail where you moved it to.

  • Upgrading from 5 to 7. An Idiot's Guide needed

When I first got my Mac, it was just on the cusp of OSX. So it came loaded with OSX and OS9. The shop I got all the kit from set everything up on OS9 with Logic 5 working via OMS.
Now, this has worked fine (apart from a few lack of memory problems) but it's time to move on.
So, I upgraded to Tiger and I've bought the upgrade from Logic 5 (Big Box version) to Logic 7 pro.
Obviously I need more memory, although I'm not sure how much, but what are the practicalities to make sure it works when I first fire it up?
What happens to my old favorite VST's?
    Virtual Guitarist, Groove Agent, Stylus,
    My battered old Edirol Orchestral?
I write for TV regularly so I can't afford to have much down-time.
Please someone tell me it'll be OK....
    Cheers
    Rod

OMS was very popular for Mac OS 9 because it managed your MIDI ports and abstracted the software/MIDI relationship to where all we needed to know were the names of the ports, rather than port numbers and stuff like that.
Apple's CoreMIDI structure in Mac OS X is based on OMS (Doug Wyatt, the developer of OMS, works for Apple and has been the primary developer behind CoreMIDI).
If you are still planning to dual boot from OS9, you will use OMS there. However, as far as OS X goes, everything you need is built in and accessed from the Audio MIDI Setup utility.

  • Upgrade From 10.1.2 to Tiger

I have a friend who was using her flat panel iMac mainly in OS9. She wanted to upgrade to Tiger and has been sold the OS but is now worrying that she will have to wipe her entire hard drive to install it. She doesn't want to do this. Will the discs perform an upgrade?

    Hi Danktuft ,
First make sure you buy the retail full install version of Tiger (black DVD). You cannot use hardware specific disks that shipped with another computer (gray).
You cannot directly upgrade from 10.1.x to 10.4.x. You will have to either reformat the drive (recommended) or do an Erase&Install. In both cases all your data will be lost, so make sure you have a complete backup!!!
If your computer can boot into OS 9 natively:
I suggest to reformat the drive using the OS 9 install CDs. By reformatting the drive with the OS 9 disk you are safe that all required OS 9 hardware drivers will be installed properly.
    0. BACKUP YOUR ENTIRE HARD DISK - it will be completely erased during the following procedure!
    1. Boot up from the OS 9 install CD and reformat the drive as Apple Extended (HFS+).
    2. Install OS 9 and update it to 9.2.2: Mac OS 9: Available Updates
    3. Confirm you can boot into OS 9
    4. Upgrade your firmware: Firmware Upgrades
    5. Insert the Tiger install DVD and reboot while holding down th c-key.
    6. Once the installer has started select "disk utility" from the menu.
    7. Select "repair OS 9 privilegies" from the menu.
    8. Repair the disk.
    9. Quit disk utility and proceed with a normal install (do not select Erase&Install because this would erase your OS 9)
    10. After the reboot Repair permissions!
    11. Download and apply the Mac OS X Update 10.4.8 Combo PPC.
    12. Repair permissions again and finally run Software Update from the Apple menu to install all remaining updates (yes, you should install all at once because only the software update app knows the exact order in which they have to be installed).
    Good luck!

  • Upgrading from Mac OS Z1-9.1 to Mac OS X.3.2 using an old G4

    Hi all,
I'm trying to upgrade from Mac OS Z1-9.1 to Mac OS X.3.2 using my spare and old G4.
I have the Installation CD's but for some reason the G4 isn't reading them so i can't update. Do i have to connect to the internet (currently no connection) to upgrade as far as possible first or is this "giant leap" from OS9.1 to OSX.3.2 just not possible in one go..?
    All advice welcome..!

    You're Welcome Shane!
Tiger is available for purchase at The Apple Store (U.S.).
Panther, is no longer available directly from the Apple Online Store, as Tiger 10.4.x is the most up to date OS.
If you know what to look for, a Full Retail Version, of the Panther Install CDs, or a Full Retail Version, of the Tiger Install DVD, can also be purchased rather inexpensively, at some online Apple retailers, Amazon, eBay, FastMac, AppleRescue, etc.
Be sure not to again purchase grey, upgrade or machine specific CDs or DVDs.
Panther is only on CDs, not DVDs.
Unless purchased from AppleRescue, the discs should look exactly like the images in the above links, and not say Upgrade, or CPU Drop-in DVD, on them.
The discs should also not say "This software is part of a hardware bundle purchase - not to be sold seperately."
Once Panther 10.3.x is installed, you can use the 10.3.9 Combo Update, to upgrade to the final version.
If your Mac meets the Tiger System Requirements, you could also consider installing that, and then use the PPC 10.4.9 Combo Update, to upgrade to the current version.
    Panther System Requirements
    Additional Panther System Requirements
Additionally, "Tiger ships on a DVD, but if your Mac doesn’t have a built-in DVD-ROM player, you’ll need CD media."
AppleRescue, also sells a Tiger installation set on CD.
Shop Carefully, Examine All Documentation, And I Wish You Success!

  • How do I upgrade from Design Collection?

I've been using Mac OSX10.3.9 via Quicksilver 1.4 PowerPC with 2g's RAM/120g HD. My system ( knock on wood ) is running well with Font Agent Pro 3.x and an HP Designjet 10ps. This setup is a good three years old. No problems proofing, web authoring, page layouts, blah, blah, blah. I've been hesitant in upgrading to CS apps and ignored CS1, CS2, CS3. But, because I am a design studio, I receive CS3 files. I'd like to keep the operating system ( because of its ability to access OS9 apps ) for as long as I can. I'm on a very limited budget and have an existing Educator version of the Design Collection ( Illus. 10, PS7, ID2 ). Question: where can I buy an unopened box of the CS2 Design Premium? I'm not ready for CS3, I'm going to wait until I get new Apple hardware for that transition. Thanks for your help.

    > So, you suggest bypassing CS2 and upgrading to CS3?
It's not so much a suggestion but very strong advice based on many posts
from people who've been taken by software pirates.
You say you have academic versions now. But they're pretty old and I'm
going to guess that you don't have that kind of eligibility anymore so
you really need to buy an upsell version since you don't have a suite to
    upgrade from.
I've got a page on my website where I at least attempt to unravel a lot
of this stuff. You can read it here:
    http://www.theindesignguy.com/puchase-advice.html
BTW, I'll secong Mike's suggestion. You're going to get a good deal more
bang for the buck out of a mid range Windows box. I'm running CS3 on
Vista 64 here and everything runs great. A side benefit is that
Photoshop CS4 will be available in 64 bit for Windows Vista only. You'll
need a boatload of RAM to notice the difference but it will be great if
you're working on very large images.
Again, keep a very close eye on Adobe's September 23 announcement to see
what the upgrade policy will be. If the past is any indication (and it
may or may not be) if you buy CS3 after the announcement it might
include an upgrade to CS4 when it ships.
You can register for the webcast announcing CS4 here:

  • Will a FCP 3.0.4 upgrade from FCP 1 load onto a new Mac Pro

Will a FCP 3.0.4 upgrade from FCP 1 load onto a new Mac Pro. I have tried loading in onto a mac book with no luck. I think its because my original FCP 1 loades using OS9 and because the new Mac Pro does not have an old operating system on it I cant load my original FCP.

You should upgrade to FCP 5.1 or 6 as Jerry says.
However, if you are desperate you could try this :-
Install just your FCP 3 upgrade and also put in your FCP 1 serial number when asked.
Whenever you try to open FCP you will probably get an error message. Click the "esc" key and FCP should open.

You can't. Once you upgrade there is no facility for downgrading.

  • HT1338 How do I upgrade from osx 10.4.11 to 10.5?

Could someone tell me how to upgrade from Tiger to Leopard as I have recently bought the latest ipod touch which won't sync to my mac as I need the newest version of itunes which doesn't run on Tiger, frustratingly.

You can skip Leopard/10.5 & go directly to the cheaper Snow Leopard/10.6 as Niel says.
    Leopard requirements/10.5.x...
        *  Mac computer with an Intel, PowerPC G5, or PowerPC G4 (867MHz or faster) processor
    minimum system requirements
        * 512MB of memory (I say 1.5GB for PPC at least, 2-3GB minimum for IntelMacs)
        * DVD drive for installation
        * 9GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
    Classic/OS9 Apps no longer supported.
Trouble is Apple no longer sells it, check eBay & such for the Retail version, not the Gray Discs...
    http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=mac+os+x+leopard+retail+10.5
    Snow Leopard/10.6.x Requirements...
    General requirements
       * Mac computer with an Intel processor
        * 1GB of memory (I say 4GB at least, more if you can afford it)
        * 5GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
        * DVD drive for installation
        * Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
        * Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and terms apply.
Which apps work with Mac OS X 10.6?...
    http://snowleopard.wikidot.com/
It looks like they might still have it...
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A?fnode=MTY1NDAzOA
    If it's a core Duo & not a Core2Duo, then it'll only run in 32 bit mode.

I upgraded to OS8 for my Iphone 5 and now I have no access to e-mail and several apps. How can I address this problem? For those who have an iphone 5 I recommend not upgrading to the new OS until these bugs are resolved.

I foolishly downloaded OS8 on my iPhone 4S. It not only greyed out my wifi button making it impossiblr to use wifi, but bluetooth connection doesn't work either. I reset the phone to factory settings but that did nothing apart from loose all my photos and contacts. OS 8 was still on after too. Apple say it is a problem but the download only brought the fact the hardware was faulty to the fore, but not being under warranty , the repair would cost £166 that I would have to pay. Totally unacceptable. If the problem was known and they knew it would cause problems on older models, why have it bob up on iTUNES for download.
Don;t download it guys, APPLE aren't admitting culpability and it will cost you a fortune to put right!!

  • Upgrade from 9.2 - can i buy jaguar? i have panther discs

    hi
i've recently bought a second hand iBook G3 Dual USB (i.e. it has two usb ports which I think means it is Dual). it also came with panther discs, which i've tried to install (upgrade from 9.2), but installation is interrupted say ing that i need osX installed already.
Does that mean i need to upgrade to jaguar or a lower version first? I've read so much stuff in the discussions but can't quite find the answer to this one.
From the specifications documents linked in one post, it appears there is no firmware upgrade necessary or available for this model.
thanks a lot for any suggestions
    gs

OS X upgrade discs are relatively rare. Apple generally only does full versions at reasonable prices and as eww says having this disks don't help at all in your case - unless you have Jaguar on the 'iBook Install/Restore CD' but it is not yet installed (Perhaps the previous owner stuck with OS9). Not all iBook Dual USB would have been supplied with any version of OS X.
Froogle turns up several resellers who sell Panther but when you drill down you find most are out of stock (no surprises there). I did find one that was selling it for £95 but for £5 less you can get Tiger (10.4) from the Apple store (so if your iBook meets the Tiger specs you're probably best to go for the more modern OS). I find Panther a lot more stable, but Tiger is much nicer to use.

  • Is it really possible to upgrade from a Treo 650 to a Treo 750?

I am not a very happy customer at the moment, but any help would be greatly appreciated. I upgraded from my old Palm Tungsten to a Zire, then to a Cingular Treo 650, combining three devices into one. I have since discovered that the Treo 650 seems to have a faulty transmission mode, as I can rarely be clearly understood by whomever I call. Am on the second (or third, I have lost track) and continue to have the same problem. I get five bars of reception but can't be understood on the other end. A bit of a problem when one is trying to call 911. Am constantly told I am "breaking up". The repair shop says it "Can't duplicate the problem". OK, then I do not want to give up all the info I have stored in the fool thing, and the 750 seems to have a different system, so I thought I would try that. All the stuff I could find seemed to indicate it wouldn't be a problem to upgrade. When the 750 arrived, I tried to install the software from the CD on my Windows XP computer. No dice. Setup encounters an error and closes. Can't even look at the files, because setup tries to run any time I access the CD. From any drive.  Gave it to my girlfiend to check on her computer, and the CD seemed to run fine. Other CDs work just fine on my computer. Must be some kind of conflict, but what? Tried calling the AT&T number that suggested they could help with setup, and was first connected to the business center, they routed me to the laptop center, who routed me to the network center, who said they would have to bring in the Palm customer service and connected me to a Mac guy that dumped me back to a menu that took me to someone for whom English is a second language with whom I was trying to communicate over a very poor satellite connection. They made no sense anyway. telling me first that I couldn't have two desktops running (wrong, my girlfriend has my old Zire and the CD worked fine) and then insisting that the serial number on my device had to start with a P, when it clearly does not have any alpha characters in it. Gave up on that route of assistance. Managed to get the new ActiveSync installed from my girlfriends computer over the network. Great. Now let's get my 650 synced with Outlook (which I have not used at home) and see if we can move on. Nope. First I have to update Outlook 2000 from the old Win98 to my current XP. Find the old CD, and square that away. OK, now sync to Outlook. Nope. The sync program gives an error, saying it will only sync with Outlook 98, 2000, and XP(2002). Good grief. I have Outlook 2000, and the software apparently does not recognize it. If the Palm doesn't work, there is no reason for me to keep this phone, and I am very close to returning it and abandoning the Palm entirely when I upgrade to something that works, although I dread re-entering all that information.

    View Solution.

Thanks for the feedback. Today I installed an Enterprise version of Office 2007 I purchased a while back, but had not yet installed. Microsoft presented a few challenges, but they were quickly resolved. I then downloaded the appropriate conduit from Palm, and synced the 650 with the handheld overwriting the computer. Then used Active Destop to sync the 750. Satisfied I had moved as much info as possible, I called AT&T and had them move the phone number to the new Treo.
Bonus! When the guy at AT&T called me on the new phone to verify it, he said it sounded better than my landline.
Sorry for the streaming paragraph. When it is late I tend to write like I think.
