Upgrading from Wi to an iMac, how do I transfer my iTunes music (~40gB)?

I currently have a machine running Windows XP and will be getting an iMac soon. I don't want to have to rip all of my CD's again, but am not sure if it is possible to transfer my music between these systems? Is there a way?
Thanks!

  • How do I transfer my itunes music library to my new computer

How do I transfer my itunes music library to my new computer (not a mac owner)?

These are two possible approaches that will normally work to move an existing library to a new computer.
    Method 1
Backup the library with this User Tip.
Deauthorize the old computer if you no longer want to access protected content on it.
Restore the backup to your new computer using the same tool used to back it up.
Keep your backup up-to-date in future.
    Method 2
Connect the two computers to the same network. Share your <User's Music> folder from the old computer and copy the entire iTunes library folder into the <User's Music> folder on the new one. Again, deauthorize the old computer if no longer required.
Both methods should give the new computer a working clone of the library that was on the old one. As far as iTunes is concerned this is still the "home" library for your devices so you shouldn't have any issues with iTunes wanting to erase and reload.
I'd recommend method 1 since it establishes an ongoing backup for your library.
If you have an iOS device that syncs with contact & calendar data on your computer you should migrate this information too. If that isn't possible create a dummy entry of each type in your new profile and iTunes should offer to merge the existing data from the device into the computer, otherwise the danger is that it will wipe the information from the device.
If your media folder has been split out from the main iTunes folder you may need to do some preparatory work to make it easier to move. See make a split library portable.
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library, or a backup of it, then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device for advice on how to set up your devices with a new library with the maximum preservation of data.

How do I transfer my iTunes music  library to a flash drive

Drag and Drop the iTunes Folder to the Flash drive.
Locate and organize your iTunes files - Apple Support
Since this really has nothing to do with Appleworks (a long dead Officie suite of Apps), I'll request it be moved to the iTunes forum.

  • New Imac, how dod I transfer my Itunes Library

Bought a new Imac yesterday and I was wondering what is the best way to transfer my Itunes library from my Macbook or Time Machine?

do you want to transfer the iTunes library inly or do you want to migrate everything from the old to the new Mac ?
if the former, the simplest way, assuming all your media files are in the default location, would be to connect the two Macs with a firewire cable, boot the source Mac in Target Disk Mode, and copy the entire iTunes folder (not just the iTunes music folder) from <MacintoshHD>/users/yourname/music on the source to <MacintoshHD>/users/yourname/music on the target (overwriting the iTunes folder in place there).
if the latter, see this user tip.

  • How do I transfer non-iTunes music files from my iPad to my MacBook using home sharing?

My MacBook Pro hard drive recently had to be replaced by Apple, because it quit for some reason they couldn't identify. However, now my ipad2 doesn't recognize my macbook pro and I have at least 200 music files in my library on my iPad that I did not get from iTunes. I need to upgrade my iPad to iOS 5 but I also don't want to lose all those music files. I was hopeful I could use home sharing to sync my iTunes libraries, but I can't figure out how to export files from my iPad. Please help, anyone?

I was hopeful I could use home sharing to sync my iTunes libraries,
Unfortunately, you can only stream content to your iOS devices via home sharing (not sync it).

Tell me how to in easy steps with a pen drive

    Hi Chris
well, i copied everything from itunes onto my ipod. I made playlists on my itunes and had an option to sync playlists which was easily done.
When i take my ipod onto another computer, i dont know how to transfer the music. All my playlists appear from the administrators but i cant copy and paste them in the music library, and even the click transfer purchases does not work. ( all these songs in playlists are not purchased. My friend had a dvd of mp3 which i took from him - is that why it does not work ? )

  • How do I transfer my iTunes music from PC to Mac?

My friend has just bought a Mac and wishes to transfer all of his iTunes library from his laptop to his new Mac. His laptop has no cd/dvd burner, so we are stumped on how to do it! Any and all suggestions gratefully received!

Does this mean that he can connect his Windows powered laptop directly to his Mac and transfer his library?
    Yes,
If this is so, how does he connect?
File sharing is the usual way. See:
Mac OS X: Setting up Windows File Sharing
Mac OS X 10.1 or later: How to Connect to Windows File Sharing
You can also use an external hard drive if you have one.
    Regards.

You might want to consider using Migration Assistant to move other files, too. MA comes pre-loaded on your Mac.
