  • Upgrade from iMac to Mac Pro - RAID5 options?

I am currently using a 27" iMac 2.66 Ghz Core i5 for my main processing needs (RAW image file editing in Adobe Lightroom & Photoshop plus HDSLR footage editing in Final Cut) and am feeling constrained by my storage options (I don't like external enclosures but want a separate boot/apps drive from my media drive) so my only logical upgrade path is a Mac Pro.
My ideal solution would be to have a lightning fast boot/apps drive (SSD seems obvious choice) and then a RAID5 array of 3 large (2TB) drives to give me at least 4GB of media storage.
The problem is that when I go to spec a Mac Pro with a hardware RAID card (because I understand that software RAID under Disk Utility can only offer RAID0 or RAID1), I am told by the web configuration tool: "Solid-state drives are not compatible with the Mac Pro RAID Card in either RAID or Enhanced JBOD mode."
What I would like to know is whether this is an absolute technical limitation or is it just something that Apple does not officially support? This would be my main production machine so I don't want to implement any hacks.
P.S. reason for my current dislike of enclosures is the extra cables/space/noise/heat they generate and also the current debate over interfaces (would like to use eSATA or USB3 to get fastest transfer speeds).
Thanks in advance for any replies!

    3 drives to me = RAID3
Apple Pro RAID card: find a good external - threads discussing options - look at AMUG reviews and elsewhere. CalDigit or something. Maybe RAID6 capability.
I would use internal drives in software RAID0.
And the only interface for external, SATA only cases, none of these consumer cases for multi interface, though OWC has a popular RAID5 4 drive setup you might like.
Use OWC SSD or two for system, and 3 x 2TB WD Black RAID0. No trouble with that. Just lots and lots of clones and backups is all.

  • Upgrading from Tiger Intel Mac XServe to Leopard

    Hi,
I would like to find out whether if i have existing shared folders and users, when upgrading from Tiger to Leopard Intel Mac XServe, will there be any problem? Do i need to backup any database or files? I would appreciate if anyone could help me.
    Thank you!

Would you ever upgrade or install patches even, and not first make a backup?
How do you plan to do the upgrade? over top of Tiger, without backup first?

  • Upgrading from Office for Mac 2011 Home & Student to Home & Business

I just switched from PC to Mac and bought my first Macbook Pro. I also bought, from Apple, Office for Mac 2011 Home & Student version without realizing that it didn't have outlook. I am going to upgrade to the Home & Business version to get outlook. Should I completely uninstall teh Home & Student version before upgrading?

    Contact Microsoft it's their product.

  • Upgrade from windows to mac

I have CS4, Design Standard. Can I upgrade it Mac version?

Furthermore, you can no longer buy new CS4 licenses. Only CS6 is available for perpetual licensing. Otherwise, you would need to subscribe to the Creative Cloud (no, it doesn't run “in the cloud” – it runs on your desktop machine, but all the software is installed and updated from “the cloud”), which by the way, allows simultaneous use on both platforms and/or switching back and forth without Adobe intervention or any license swaps.

  • LR3 to LR4 upgrade from PC to mac

i have LR3 installed in my windows based PC, i just got an imac and want to install LR4, can i just purchase an "upgrade" instead of buying the "full" version?

    HI,
Yes you can. Licenses are valid for Win and Mac. Update licenses are avaiable. But you may want a few mounth until lr5 is released and save some money for an other update license.

  • Upgrade from xp to mac

my itunes library is in xp and I wanted to copy it over to my new macbookpro but I'm being told that it's impossible to save my playlists and ratings. I spent three hours at the Apple store but they were clueless. I copied all the data (all my songs) and they are wroking fine on my new mac but the playlists and stars are also important. PLEASE help.
    thx

When either of you downloads music, it will be placed in the directory designated in iTunes preferences. So, the files are there. The problem is, it wasn't imported into the other users iTunes library, even though it was in the right directory.
One potential work around is to disable "Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to Library" and then just drag and drop the new files into the other users iTunes library. You would have to do it whenever either of you downloads new music, but it should be relatively easy.
Another work around comes from the ability to have multiple libraries for each iTunes program. Try copying all the files into one iTunes library, and then going to the other user and holding down the option/alt key while iTunes is opening. This will prompt iTunes to ask for a Library to use. Select the Library that you copied all of your music and movies into and that should take care of the problem. As one user updates the files iTunes needs to maintain it's database and such, the updated files should open in the other users iTunes as well. You just can't have iTunes open in both user's accounts at the same time (it would be like having two people working on the same Word document at the same time. Whoever saves any changes first has their changes over written by the person who save changes second. And the changes in this case are the updates to the iTunes Library file and the iTunes Music Library.xml file).
And the third and possibly simplest is just to use Shared libraries. It is definitely the easiest if not the most user friendly.

  • Upgrading: From PC to Mac

    Hey folks.
I am thinking of getting a Mac soon, and was curious about
the best way to carry Flash over. I currently have Flash 8 for
Windows, and was curious if there was any way to get it running for
a Mac, besides just outright buying a new copy of Flash.
If not, would the cheapest way be to upgrade to Flash CS3,
and buy the Mac version when I upgrade? Is that possible, even?
Thanks for any help you can give.

I was able to get a new key to use on a Mac. I had Studio MX
for PC and I called and told them that I got a Mac and that my key
would not work. They reset my registration to work on a Mac. It
might be worth the call to Adobe CS... however plan on waiting at
least 45 min on hold before talking to a real person.
However, I have to say that it was a student version so that
might have had something to do with it.

  • Upgrade from Tiger Intel Mac XServe to Leopard Intel Mac XServe

    Hi,
I would like to find out whether if i have created existing LDAP users, network shared drives hosted on XServe Raid, what are the measures to be taken before performing an upgrade? Would appreciate if anyone could help me.
    Thank you!
    Cheers,
    Stephanie

    Hi Stephanie
In 'theory' there should not be a problem.
However as already stated I've tried this at a number of sites and its been a problem every time. Others on the forum have found this too. I think its mainly because of issues with DNS and the config files used. Under Tiger these were /etc/named.conf and /var/named. Under Leopard its slightly different. See:
    http://www.afp548.com/article.php?story=20071031195155456&query=Leopard%2BDNS
I'v tried numerous things that ultimately only a clean install would solve. I hope ou have prepared your 'ground' well as you may end up doing this regardless of what you decide.
How do I backup all user's home directories?
There should be no need to do this if home directories are not stored on the system drive. Although its always a good idea to have backups of as much as possible - just in case.
How do I backup the entire LDAP database?
Server Admin > Open Directory > Settings > Archive
The LDAP database contains information regardiing all users, groups, machines, UIDs, GUIDs, MCX and passwords amongst other things. Home directories are not stored in the LDAP database.
Is there a possibility that all LDAP users and password might not be able to migrate over to the new leopard OS?
Provided you keep everything the same in terms of DNS, IP address, hostname etc then it should be OK. Although you never know? Its always a good idea to have a fallback position just in case. If you have the facility/luxury of using a test server first then use it. It could save you a lot of heartache/hassle/time later on.
Follow the advice I've given and you should be OK regarding home directories. Basically it boils down to this. Before upgrading or clean installing back up all home directories. Un-automount and un-share the folder used for home directory creation and automounting. Archive the LDAP database and on top of that export all Users and Groups as an extra safeguard.
If the folder used for home folders is on an external drive or another internal drive you should be OK in simply unsharing it.
Will there be any compatibility issues to access the shared folder from Tiger OS client computer?
In my experience I have not seen this. Ideally you should try and have everyone on the same OS.
What I have found is if your environment varies slightly from the 'Apple standard model' then you will in all likelihood have problems. Your mileage may. This is something I think some people who post on these forums fail to realize? It is understandable though as most most people's requirements or environments do not 'conform' to that standard - although it is hard to figure out what that standard is sometimes as the documentation is - shall we say - incomplete.
In which case you are (apart from online resources) generally on your own.

  • Upgrading from CS5 mac to CS6 pc

    Hi
I will upgrade from CS5 for mac to CS6 for PC. Will i be able to open the old project files on the PCwith CS6?

When you open a project made on one computer on a different computer it may report that the media is off-line. You then need to find the media in the dialogue box(es) which appear to re-link the files. Premiere will probably have to spend some time re-conforming the audio first. The only time this does not occur is when Premiere's preferences are identical on each computer and the media is located on the same drive path, E.G. E:\Projects\project1
If any media files use Mac specific codecs then you may have issues IE Pro-Res files.
This will not be the case as you are changing between Mac and windows and paths to folders etc cant be the same. But it will work.

  • Upgrade Photoshop Elements 12 (Mac) to Photoshop CC

I've decided I want to upgrade from Photoshop Elements (Mac) 12 to Photoshop CC, and am wondering if there are any "gotchas" I should be aware of prior to committing to this change?
I wouldn't have any need for Photoshop Elements after the upgrade, and I'm wondering, for example, if I should deinstall this application before upgrading to Photoshop CC?
    Any advice would be appreciated.

    Hi mhosborn,
It's always recommended to uninstall the older version of the software before installing the newer one if you don't intend to use it.
After uninstalling you can go ahead and install the newer version.

  • Hi i upgrade from lion to mountain lion to day on my mini mac,Since the upgrade i am getting no sound through my HDMI cable which was working fine on lion Checked the midi audio settings and system preferences to out on HDMi nothing no sound whats so ever

Hi i upgraded from lion to mountain lion to day on my mini mac,Since the upgrade i am no longer getting sound through my HDMI cable which was working fine on lion Checked the midi audio settings and system preferences to out on HDMi nothing no sound whats so ever.Any one any ideas?
I use a samsung TV for my monitor via HDMI.Tried all the system Audi setting nothing .Head phone and internal speakers are fine.

Similar issue; Audio was working fine on Lion, now not on Mountain Lion. Have a Macbook Pro early 2011 with AMD Radeon HD 6750M, connected by thunderbolt through a Lacie LBD to a mini-displayport to HDMI adapter (n.b. same problem when not going through the LBD) to a Pioneer VSX 521 AV receiver. For me when I go into audio Midi settings all the volume sliders for the displayport device are greyed out and at zero. But when I click 'configure speakers', it's able to send out the test signals to each speaker. Part of the problem could be that I'm not getting the option to put out 6channel sound, only 2 or 8 channel. Since my system is Dolby 5.1, and I only have 6 speakers, I would have expected the 6ch option to be available. But I imagine there's more to it than that. Elsewhere someone has suggested playing with Remote Interactive over HD on an Onkyo device; I'll see if there's something similar on the Pioneer that can be changed. Any other suggestions welcome.
