Upgrading from WLC-12 to WLC-50

Would anyone know if I would run across any issues when upgrading from a Cisco Wireless controller WLC-12 to a Cisco wireless controller WLC-50? Can anyone forsee any issues with me just copying the startup config from the WLC-12 to the WLC-50? Any and all comments are appreciated.
Thank You,
Travis

I don't think that is supported. You are better off configuring the new wlc. You don't want to risk having a corrupted configuration file on the wlc. Setup the new one side by side so you can compare the configuration.... doesn't take long.

    Dears ,
I have upgraded my WLC from version 5.1.151 to version 6.0.202 and then to 7.0.116 .
Since when , I see that all clients are disconnected every around 20 minutes and re-connected again .
Does anyone has any clues ?
    WLC is 4402
    AP are AIR-LAP1231G-E-K9 and AIR-LAP1242G-E-K9

when the issue happens.. what does the logs say?? in the mean time.. disable the session timout on all the WLAN on the WLC..

  • Upgrade from 7.0.235 to 7.0.240 5508 WLC

Does anyone see a reason to upgrade from 7.0.235 to 7.0.240? I can't go any higher right because we are still using WCS. I read the white papers but as far as I can tell there are no new features..

Leo is a risky Australian.... beware
You might be able to get it to work, just Cisco will not support it.  They need to keep the LifeCycle going $$$$$$$

  • Guest tunnel/auto-anchor from 2100 to 4400 WLC

We’d like to extend our current Guest LAN from a 4400 WLC in our data center to a 2100 WLC located at a remote facility. However, we cannot get the foreign controller to pass traffic to the anchor controller – or so it seems. The catch is that we’re not actually trying to extend the SSID itself to provide wireless access, but instead flub it so that we can provide local wired access tunneled to the Guest LAN on the anchor WLC. I’m not entirely sure if this is possible, because I’ve read that before the EoIP tunnel will come up a guest client must associate to the foreign WLC.
We’ve followed the instructions we could find that go over setting up this type of scenario, but unfortunately they only cover setting up back-to-back 4400 controllers and as such, some functions described (notably being able to create a Guest LAN) are not possible on the 2100. We haven’t been able to find a clear and concise guide on the scenario we want to set up.
    Here’s some detail:
Mobility group is up/up between both WLCs. Both WLCs are running 6.0.x code.
    Anchor WLC – 3750G-24WS-S25 (a 4400 WLC w/ integrated 3750G-24)
Guest LAN WLAN “wired-guest” created; Ingress is “none” and Egress is our existing “dirtnet” – i.e. outside access. The “dirtnet” interface is *not* a Guest LAN interface. Mobility anchor is set as local.
    Remote WLC – WLC2106
WLAN “wired-guest” created; Interface is “wired” w/ an IP address on the same subnet as the anchor “dirtnet” and associated with port 2. Mobility anchor is set to the anchor WLC and is up/up. I have a laptop connected to port 2 with a statically assigned IP address on the same subnet as “dirtnet.” I am able to ping the local port 2 address, but I can’t ping across the tunnel to the anchor WLC. I also cannot ping the anchor WLC "dirtnet" interface from the foreign WLC’s Ping tool.
    Are we missing something?

    Sean,
Wired guest access is not supported on WLC2106.

  • Migrate AP from WiSM to Virtual WLC

    Hello all,
We have WiSM installed in Core Switch 6500 having 300+ AP registered on it.
We want to migrate our AP's to new Virtual WLC. What is the best way to migrate AP to new vWLC with less down time.
Can we migrate AP's from WiSM to Virtual WLC in bulk ( all in one time)? I read some where in form that AP version 7.3 & above start supporting vWLC. I am not sure if this applies for WisM as well ( i am assuming WiSM & WLC are differnt) ?
My WiSM is running 7.0.240.0 & vWLC is 7.4. please check the WiSM attachments.
Also is there any way to take backup from WiSM and restore on vWLC ?
    Regards.

    Hi,
First of all, in order to reduce downtime, I would recommend that you upload the 7.4 code on the WiSM and predownload it to all the APs. (Wireless -> Global Configuration - AP Image Pre-download).
Another thing would be to configure the vWLCs as back-up Primary & Secondary Controllers (Wireless -> Global Configuration - High Availabiliy). Doing this your APs will already know about the new WLC when the first will go down and will not have to go through discovery process. (test from AP CLI with show capwap client config)
For the AP mode "mass-conversion" to flexconnect I don't know a better way than from WLC CLI, using:
config ap mode flexconnect submode none AP_NAME_1
config ap mode flexconnect submode none AP_NAME_300
You could use text file to edit the the command with the AP names and than paste it all at once in the WLC. It would be wise to test it first with a few lines.
If you did all this, when your old WLC goes down all your APs should associate to the new WLCs.
    Best regards,
    Sebastian

  • Moving Licences from WLC2504 to Virtual WLC

    I have a WLC2504 with 35 licences (two 5 packs and one 25 pack)
The fear is that if this older piece of hardware would die, then so would my 35 licences.
I recently installed a Virtual WLC with 5 licences.
What I would really love to able to do, is somehow migrate my 35 licences from 2504 to the Virtual controller.
Is there a backdoor method to get those licences out of my 2504
I do not have a Smartnet on any of these devices, so no worries of warranties, etc..
Comments, suggestions, opinions and flames are all welcome and appreciated

If I am not mistaken, you will not be able to move a license from a Gen 2 WLC (like the 2500) to the Gen 3 box (like the vWLC).

  • Question about tunnel two WLAN from the same foreign WLC to the same anchor

Hi all,I met following customer request:
one anchor WLC 4402-12 put in the DMZ of perimeter firewall, one WiSM in the internal network to controll all the AP1252. two WLAN created at the WiSM and anchor WLC: guest wlan(web-auth+lobby admin created guest accounts) and untrusted wlan(web-auth+ACS+AD user database). Both WLANs want to be tunneled from WiSM to Anchor WLC. Guest WLAN has not much users, untrusted WLAN has a lot of users which may be thousands. My question is if this design can work?(I know definately one WLAN can be tunneled, but not sure if there's any potential issues if tunnel two WLANs)
Is there any performance issue? What WLC version is suggested to use?
    Thanks for any help!

I haven't ever tried this but suspect that you can form only one tunnel outbound per WLC. The anchor supports multiple inbound tunnels but outbound is the question. When you find out for sure please post it here.

  • Layer2 security 802.1x radius traffic will be sent from foreign WLC or anchor WLC?

Wireless Design with foreign WLC or anchor WLC, understood that after WIFI client associated with WLC, all traffic should be tunneled to anchor WLC including DHCP request or any layer3 security such as web auth.
What if we are using layer2 security 802.1x using ACS for authentication, which WLC will be sending radius traffic to ACS, foreign WLC or anchor WLC? This impacts our firewall rules.

Authentication and all L2 encryptions will happen at the "foreign" WLC.

Can you upgrade from 1.3.0.20 small ovf to 2.1 without migrating to a new server? It sounds like you can just adjust the server settings now. I am currently running 1.3.0.20 and I have enough to do with also needing to upgrade my wlc to 7.4.121.0 and getting the MSE up to 7.4.121.0 without having to stand up a new server if I don't have to. Please share any information you have in regards to your experience with coming from a version 1.2-1.3 small ovf and going to 2.1.
    Thanks,
    Andrew

You are better off standing up a new server.  It's cleaner and safer..... you can always try to upgrade if you wish, but if things don't work out well, then you just wasted a lot of time.  Snapshot the VM and export the floor plans, just in case.  The ova is built around the DB size, so I don't know how well the DB will perform if you try to expand memory or drive space after an upgrade.

  • Upgrading from 7.0.98.0 to 7.0.220.0

We are looking to upgrade our 5508 wireless controller from 7.0.98.0 to 7.0.220.0. Reason being, we have experienced a lot of access points disassociating from the controller as well as client authentication issues. Has anyone upgraded from 7.0.98.0 to 7.0.220.0 and experienced any issues during the upgrade or after the upgrade?

    https://supportforums.cisco.com/message/3540673#3540673
This is the original thread discussing the predownload issue.  The code upgrade goes very smoothly... it's when you get to the AP's that the problems start.  If you do not have any maintenance window restrictions, then you have no problems ahead.
Please read the above thread, it will shed a lot of light on the subject.
Rule of thumb:  If you predownload the image to the AP's and "swap" the images, if the new image doesn't show as primary, you have a problem.  When you reload the wlc's and the AP's, the AP's will rejoin and "think" they have earlier code.  they will redownload, notice I say redownload the new code... even though it already exists in flash.  Then they will reboot again.  If you/your company has no problem with this method, you'll be fine.
    Thanks,
    Tony

  • POE Issues After Upgrade from 7.0.240 to 7.6.100

We have a 5508 that has just been upgraded from 7.0.240 to 7.6.100 with many 1142's, 3502's, etc. Our wired network is HP 5406zl's POE on every port and plenty of power available for POE.
As soon as we upgraded our 1142's to 7.6.100 we started getting poe faults on several switchports. The trap indicates an over-current error and the AP will not power up. I can move that same AP to another switch port and some times that will work. If I reboot the switch the faults may clear on those ports, but will reappear on other ports. It is not always the same APs, and not always the same switch ports.
I have tried downgrading back to 7.0 and the errors clear. Obviously I want to be running the newer code for the bug fixes and features. TAC has not given this case any time yet.
The switches report more than enough power being available still on the ports.  I can see the ports try to come up, and most of the times the AP will start to power up and come up at 8 watts as it boots, and as soon as the AP is ready to go and starts powering the radios it enters the fault state.
The APs all run in local mode, and I have tried enabling "Pre-standard 802.3af switches. "
Does anyone have any ideas? Something must have changed in the way power is drawn or negotiated.

    HI Glenn,
Go for 7.4.121.0 (7.4MR2) version & see if this issue is there ? If not then it may be a bug/issue specific to this latest code. Here is the release notes for this code
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/wireless/controller/release/notes/crn74mr02.html
Also makesure your WLC FUS also upgraded to 1.7.0.0. See below & keep note this will take 30-40min downtime to your wireless.
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/wireless/controller/release/notes/fus_rn_1_7_0_0.html
The version I have given is the one most people including TAC would recommend

  • Migrate WLC 4400 to WLC 5508

I'm looking for some suggestion. We have a WLC 4402 and will be upgrading to WLC5508. The WLC 4402 will be moved to a smaller office to provide wireless coverage there.
Would it be better to upgrade the 4402 with the 5508, then wipe it clean and configure it for the new office from scratch.
Or configure the 5508 from scratch then change the settings in 4402 to reflect the new office.
Is there a way to use WCS to move all of the configurations from 4402 to 5508

    Abhishek,
I strongly recommend you delete your post.  It's going nowhere.  You've posted a link which points to another link that no longer exist.  FAIL!
    Aqeel,
Delete your post.  You're not reading AND understanding the OP.  Your solution is irrelevant because it talks about how to upgrade the WLC firmware.
    Gents,
May I recommend you consider getting PROPER TRAINING?  Cisco has a wealth of Cisco Training for staff which could potentially benefit.  Get yourselves properly trained before making any posts.

how to reboot the AP from the controller. ( I see 'Reset AP' -  this option to reboot or something else)
how to disconnect all users connected to specific SSID from controller
Can AP model 3702 work with WLC  5508, do we need specific software version

  • Migrate WLC 4400 to WLC 5500

    Hi experts,
I want to Migrate WLC 4400 with WLC 5500, But i don't know how to do this.
Should i create new configuration or use my  WLC 4400 config ?
I want to know about IOS for WLC 5500, should I upgrade my Access Point to connect with new WLC ?
I need a good method to migrate this WLC. So my WLC 5500 can run properly.
    Thankyou for your help.

I have no idea how Ravi's answer is considered "correct" when he didn't address the most important aspect of your thread.
As far as I'm aware, you need to ensure both controllers are running the same firmware or 7.0.250.X.
Take a copy or export the config of the 4400 configuration to your TFTP server.  Edit the file and change the necessary settings.  Go to the 5500 and download this configuration file.  Upgrade the firmware and the bootstrap if necessary.
