Upgrading g4 advice needed

Hello, I have a power pc g4/533 mhz, and since i know nothing about computers, i was wondering if someone could give me some advice as to how 2 make my machine run better; i heard there are cpu upgrades? i use a lot of flash, final cut, and other software like that, and lately the programs have been running slower and slower, if i upgrade my cpu will that help? or what would you recommend? These r my system specifications (its in a different language, so im gonna try 2 translate it... hope i do it correctly):
Computer model: Power Mac G4
Type of CPU: PowerPC G4 (11.3)
Number of CPU: 1
Speed of CPU: 533 MHz
Level 2 caché (CPU): 1 MB
Memory: 640 MB
Bus Speed: 133 MHz
Startup ROM version: 4.2.8f1
Also, i have a Nvidia GeForce 2 MX card
Hope you can help me....

O.k., dear Psycho Biotch,
As stated before (...and lately the programs have been running slower and slower...), it is very likely that your current internal Hard Disk (which, at the most, is an Ultra ATA, 60GB in capacity) has reached is near to full storage capacity.
Under OSX you should be aware that once the hard disk has reached 80-85% of its full capacity in data stored on it, it is time to either move some old files onto external media (such as CD-Rs) in order to free some additional space, or to increase your data storage capacity.
Since you ...use a lot of flash, final cut, and other software like that..., I will NOT reccomend you to just add another Ultra ATA hard disk on the same bus your current disk is connected to (which is usually the easiest thing to do). This because, although your internal Ultra ATA/IDE bus is capable of handling two hard drives connect to it (one set as "Master" and the other set as "Slave"), moving large files from one drive to another could prove to be painfully slow and experiencing a lot of "data chunkin'" from the drives.
The IDE bus, in fact, allows only small "data packages" to be exchanged on the same bus, forcing the disks' hardware to continuos data seeks and retrivals. See this Storage Acceleration Guide for more details about what I am trying to explain you.
If you use applications such Final Cut Pro and Flash, it is likely you are handling files which - on average - are of pretty large dimensions.
That's why I am suggesting you to add another hard disk, BUT make sure the new hard disk is on a different data bus from your present one.
How to do that? Well, there are two solutions which come to my mind. I'll explain both to you and then you choose the one which suits you best. One is "short term" but, perhaps, more economical. The other is more "long term" and more expandable.
Short term solution
My idea is to swap your internal Ultra ATA hard disk with a more modern one, 120GB in capacity (as it is the maximum capacity your internal IDE controller will allow you to format), and to place your current hard disk into an external FireWire case.
Pros:
* - You will have two hard disk drives on two separate data "buses" as desired, for best performance.
* - You will still be able to start-up your Mac from your old hard disk placed in the FireWire case and connected to one of your Mac's FireWire ports.
* - Once you'll have installed OSX in the new drive and moved all your applications and data to it, you will be able to use your older drive in the FireWire box as your main backup drive, where you can hold a copy of all your pretious projects, etc.
* - Whatever final set-up you will ahve in the future, you will always find a good use for your older hard disk placed in the FireWire external box and even when, or if, it will eventually die on you, you can still use the box to place another har disk in it. So, your money will be in any event wisely spent.
Cons:
* - Maybe, having to deal with an additional external case, it will be cause of excessive electrical wireing around your working desk, making it look more "un-tidy".
* - You will need to find an extra power plug on your strip.
* - If you use an UPS system (like any of these), you will need to figure out wheather it can protect your new external addition or not, without the need to get a more powerful one.
* - You will need to instal the old hard drive on your own, if you don't want to spend the extra cash for someone else to do it for you (however, the instructions are easy to follow).
Here are a couple of examples with indicative costs:
* Seagate Barracuda 120GB with 8MB cache memory, to be installed internally in place of your existing hard disk.
* FireWire (Combo) Case Kit where to install your present internal hard disk, once you've swapped it with the above new one; this particular example comes in a box including indipendent power supply, screws, FireWire cables and instructions.
Here are a couple of other useful instruction links:
* Apple's CIP ATA Hard Drive instructions - "How to" video guide (QT movie).
* Apple's CIP ATA Hard Drive instructions - Same as above but Adobe Reader printable download.
* OWC FireWire Assembly Manual - Maybe the model you might go for in the end, could differ from the one depicted in the above instructions, but the main activities are the same.
Let me know if you like the above solution.
In another post, I'll explain you the second solution I have in mind.
Later.

Looking at the specs you listed, the only difference I see is the CAS. CAS 2.5 memory usually has lower latency that CAS 3. There is a small percentage performance increase with the CAS-2.5 over the CAS-3 in some applications, mainly games. One other thing to consider is that the CAS-2.5 will run faster than the CAS-3 making it your best bet for speed and stability when overclocking. So if you want to wring the last bit of performance out of your system, get the CAS-2.5. Otherwise, CAS-3 memory should meet your requirements.

  • Upgrading MBP, Advice Needed

    Hello everyone,
I've been wanting to upgrade my 2010 13" MBP (baseline model) for a while now. It's not that it's bad or anything, it's just that I "settled" for the 13" and I'm sort of kicking myself for it now. I've been looking into the 15" variants and have waited for the update yesterday (because I don't need a new laptop, I would just like to upgrade). Now you're probably all thinking "this jerk is just some kid who wants to look cool with the latest gear, why buy a laptop when you don't NEED one" (or at least that's how I'd assume this post would be treated from reading Macrumors and the like lol). Well, my current problems with my 13" is that it's not quite powerful enough. I do heavy audio recording, mixing, and mastering--I should also add not professionally for any company, but rather under-the-counter for various clients--and I often find my CPU running high and RAM paging out all the time. This seriously limits the numbers of tracks I can mix (as well as effects playback whilst recording), and creates problematic latency. To remedy this, I absolutely NEED more RAM (and a better CPU wouldn't hurt). In addition, I do like to play video games. I am unable to run Skyrim on my 13", while Diablo 3 runs alright (not great, but I guess I'm just being greedy). Again, upgrading to a 15" with dedicated GPU will solve this problem.
Now that you have my backstory/needs, time for the million dollar question: which 15" should I upgrade to? I plan on milking as many years out of this next laptop that I possibly can. If I can get 5 years, then I'll get 5 years. If I can get 10, then I'll use up all 10. I plan on using this laptop until it's last dying breath and therefore would like to make it as "future-ready" as possible without breaking my bank. I'm debating between the baseline 15" model (upgraded to 8 GB RAM) vs. the next gen MBP (baseline model). This poses a $300 difference and I'm not sure how weigh what's important to me. I don't really care about the retina display (though that and the increased VRAM will help create a more "future-ready" computer). I also am fine with the removal of the ODD because I can get a portable blu-ray drive that will get the job done. I'm even fine with the non-user-upgradeable RAM, and SSD (though maybe I'll regret that as the years go on?). What I really like are the specs (ports, port-placement, SSD, etc.). I would like to upgrade to a 256 GB SSD anyways, and I feel like that alone can almost justify the $300 price difference (it definitely can according to what Apple's charging for the BTO options :S). Like I said, I can't immediately foresee me NEEDING the retina display or additional GPU RAM, but it might come in useful in 10 years times (provided it should last that long), and I would like the most future-ready computer. I'm having trouble justifying the next gen MBP (even though I would absolutely get it if money weren't an issue). I'm just wondering what your thoughts are on the matter (and no, I won't accept "get what you want" lol). I would also like to thank you in advance for your replies and taking the time to read my long-winded post.
    Cheers

+1 what Ralph said.  Get the baseline $1799 15", and upgrade it yourself.  If you're doing audio production, upgrade the display to 1680x1050 for $100.  Then, you can upgrade the RAM and SSD yourself down the road, for much cheaper than Apple's prices.  That 2.3GHz i7 will be plenty for audio production.
No audio production software, besides probably garageband, supports the retina display yet.  You'd be effectively using a 1440x900 display.  Better than your 13", but not by much.

  • IMac 233 RAM upgrade-wisdom & advice needed

    Hi-
I have an iMac 233 now running on OS9.2.2., it is a bondi, tray-load-CD-drive, Video memory is 6MB according to system profile. (I think it may be a Rev A but I'm still a little shaky on determining that one). I've been it's only owner since it was new (circa 1997-1998 who really remembers that far back??).
I have 32MB in the bottom memory slot, and 128MB in the top spot (I added it just after I got the computer). So it has 160 MB memory now.
I'm running into memory issues and I want to max out the memory that it can hold.
Some websites say it will take 512 MB. How so? Two 256MB chips? Other sources say I'm limited to 160 MB.
Some memory websites say you'll only know if the larger memory chip works if you try it, because of where your board was made.
Should I try putting a 256MB memory chip in the bottom slot? I understand it is under the top one, and I've been inside the guts before so I'm not intimidated by doing this myself.
Has anyone out there had any success doing something like this?
And are the top and bottom chips different sizes so that one may not fit into the other?
Also, is there anything I will need to reset or worry about when I change the internal 1/2 AA battery? My clock is losing a few minutes every week. I've got the new battery but want to know what to expect popping the old one out.
Any help would really be appreciated. Thanks!

I ran 512MB in my Bondi Blue for years. The lower slot is low profile (1.5" I believe), so you have to get a low profile DIMM for that slot. You can get a 512MB kit for it from www.datamem.com, which is 2X256MB DIMMs. Either one will be low profile, or both will be (since the top slot can fit either low profile or regular size). I've spoken to people who claim to have put 2X512 MB in their Bondis.
Replacing the battery is just a matter of taking the old one out and putting the new one in.

  • High noise and vibration levels after Hitachi 7k500 upgrade. Advice needed

A couple days ago I upgraded my mid 2010 MBP 13 stock hdd(Hitachi 5400rpm 250gb) to a new one (Hitachi 7200rpm 500gb 7k500). I am still amazed by how much faster and more responsive system has gone.
I was expected some increase in noise and vibration of the system, but it does I am starting to get a bit annoying. Vibration gets on my nerves- the levels are nowhere high, but there was no vibration in my stock HDD. In addition, the noise of the system on idle has roughly doubled- both fan and HDD are humming at the same level. The system is still very quite, but I could not help noticing it anyway.
I tried replacing the old HDD and found out that the problems were not present with it (=I am not likely to have made some awful mistakes putting the hard drive in). Then I tried tightening all the screws as hard as possible and putting some rubberized washers on the corners of the HDD to ensure snuggly fit. All efforts rendered no change. Are there any other methods to reduce noise and vibration?
Furthermore, I still have one day to return the 7k500 without any loss. Should I get WD Scorpio Blue 500gb instead? I have read user reports of similar problems with WD SB 640gb drives as well. Since these drives are essentially the same, I would expect similar problems with 500gb as well.

Did you return it? I have the same drive and agree it is a bit noisier than the original Hitachi 5400 drive it replaced. But it is also noticeably faster and also, the noise seems to vary probably depending on internal temperature. I'm not noticing vibration.
Also, I wonder if the increased noise is par for the course with these 7200 rpm drives? Is the Seagate 7200.4 drive quieter? The reason I went with the Hitachi though is the salesperson at OWC said the Hitachi's were definitely more reliable.

  • Video intensive work on Mac Pro? Advice Needed

    Hi everyone,
I've been originally saving up for a while now for an iMac 24" as it offers the best specification price wise. But now I leaning on the Mac Pro and therefore need some advice.
I know that there are alot of posts on advice - need to buy mac etc. so therfore I would really appreciate if I am afforded some help.
I am mostly going to do ALOT of video encoding (via handbrake) and I am looking for the best configuration available to achieve lowest waiting time.

I think you should go back and look at the other threads with advice, your budget. There is "ideal" and "affordable."
Will it pay for itself in 24 months so you can afford the next revision at that time?
    Start with an 8-Core 3GHz.
Add a Port Multiplier controller and two drive cases, 5 drives each, nearly 400MB/sec RAID.
    Throw in 8GB RAM.
Add in costs for software upgrades, two sets of backups, four internal 500GB drives.
Seagate has 750GB, as does WD. Hitachi has their $450 1000GB monster.
Give yourself time to build, test, and optimize your setup, and expect to change it over time as you learn more.
Can't afford that? then trim the 8-core. But Apple has shown how efficient next generation applications already are for video when it comes to 3GHz 8-core Mac Pro.

Your problem is that the program wants a good video card and a fast hard drive and lots of memory and you have none of the above. If you upgraded the RAM to 8 gigs and installed a solid state hard drive you might make the program useable but the real bottleneck  is going to be the Intel HD graphics, which cannot be upgraded.
You do have an open slot to add one 4 gig memory module. This is an easy relatively inexpensive upgrade. See here:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L7FvZ-JduRM
    http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/ct51264bf160b
I would try this a step at a time. Next would be the solid state drive. That would cost maybe $150. Post back if you need more help.

Photoshop was the last version compiled for the PPC cpu, not Intel. 10.6.8 kept it going with the Rosetta emulator, gone since 10.7.
    So, no CS2 won't work under 10.10
CS6 (permanent license) or Lightroom and Photoshop | Adobe Creative Cloud Photography plan is the way to go.

    Well that's not entirely true.
Apple Stores have been instructed not to sell you an iPhone if any of the following is true:
    • You state that you will not be signing up with AT&T.
    • You do not have an ID from a US state, also indicating you will not be activating with AT&T
    • You do not have a credit card
For example, I've seen US Apple Store managers refuse to sell iPhones to European residents because of the AT&T lock-in.
