Upgrading G4 dual 800MHz 10.3

fairly new to the Mac world, I have a system that I got for cheap it originally had a password set and it was lost. I called and got the original OS X 10.3 discs sent to me and reinstalled. It's a Power Mac G4 dual 800MHz PPC Quicksilver and I was wondering about upgrading it to 10.4 from 10.3. I found a retail set of 10.4 will I be able to upgrade from those discs keeping the applications already installed on the system or will I loose those and if the retail set is not the discs I need which ones do I need and what exactly do I need to look for?

aa-r0n:
if there is a link that will explain how to back the 10.3.9 up
To backup/clone the entire volume you will need an external firewire HDD and a backup utility like SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner, or Disk Utility.
Creating a bootable clone with OS X Disk Utility
Clone HDD to external HDD using SuperDuper
• Connect external HDD to computer
• Power up HDD
• Start up computer
• Download and launch SuperDuper
• In the Copy field select your internal HDD
• To is your external HDD which will hold the backup/cone
• Using backup all files
• Click Options button
• Check Repair Disk Permissions on Source
• During copy Erase Destination HDD then copy from Source
• On successful completion Quit SuperDuper
• Click Copy and confirm
SuperDuper will take care of the rest.

  • Leopard Server on Dual 800MHz G4?

Sorry if this is a repost, I tried searching around for a while and couldn't find an answer to this...
I'm looking to install OS X Server on an old dual 800MHz G4 tower. I was just wondering if the install would allow it, because the clock speeds are below the minimum requirement, even though it's got 2 of them.
    Thanks in advance,
    J

No, Leopard's CPU speed restriction applies to a single processor. Your computer does not meet the requirement. You could look for a CPU upgrade for your model (check sonnettech.com) but you should know that Apple does not support CPU upgrades. Now that doesn't mean Leopard won't run on an upgraded machine, it means that if you have any problems with Leopard on an upgraded machine, Apple provides no support and does not guarantee that Leopard will work on an upgraded machine. However, the vendors selling the upgrades can confirm compatibility (at least with Leopard Client. I don't know if they test the Server version.)
You will need to weigh the differences between the cost of upgrading the computer versus buying a new or newer model with a faster processor.

  • Dual 800MHz in 733MHz QuickSilver - heatsink

    Hello everyone!
I just had a PowerMac G4 QuickSilver 2001 (the original model) with a 733MHz single CPU from a good friend.
I want to upgrade the CPU and I already know that the CPU from the Dual 800MHz Quicksilver will fit and work in my computer, but my question is about the heatsink.
The Dual 800MHz CPU I saw on eBay doesn't come with an heatsink, so: can I use my heatsink from the single 733MHz with the Dual 800MHz or will it overheat? I could put a second 60mm fan attached to the heatsink to improve the airflow, will it be enough cooling?
    Thanks!

As BD says, the 344W should be sufficient. It was standard on the 2001 Quicksilver with the dual 800MHz CPU.
I would worry more about the heat created. When I fit a dual processor to a Quicksilver, I fit an Evercool EC6025H12CA fan in place of the standard CPU fan. Cools things down nicely. It's a three wire fan, so you fold the third (blue, I think) wire out of the way. As I recall, you pull the blue wire out of the little white plug (folding it back out of the way) and move the black wire from its initial position to the space left when you pulled the blue wire. This lets you slide the little three wire plug onto the two posts of the motherboard where the original low speed fan went. The new fan will run at full speed (like the original) instead of being a variable speed job, but I haven't had one fail yet. Stare at it for a few minutes to get it all properly arranged in your mind, and it should go smoothly.
If you can't find a proper heatsink, you can try looking for a dual 1GHz CPU (and heatsink) from the 2002 Quicksilver. Interchanges easily.
I sort of prefer a Radeon 9800 or a GeForce 6800GT to the 9600, but anything should be faster than the GeForce2.
    Best of luck! ... jws

MacBook Pro Retina 13" - Can i upgrade the dual-core i7 to quad-core i7 CPU?  (obviously not talking about BTO, but about "self-service" upgrade ...)

Yeah it is soldered. So no upgrade possible. Found here: http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/macbook_pro/macbook-pro-retina-display-faq /macbook-pro-retina-display-processor-ram-expansion-slots.html

Sorry if posted before, was unable to find anything. Is it possible to upgrade a Mac Pro 1,1 (2006) Upgrade from Dual-Core to Quad-Core (or more)? If it is, would you mind providing a bit of info on what I would need to do this.
    Many thanks.

  • Can i upgrade my dual 1.8 G5 processors?

was wondering if i can upgrade my dual 1.8 G5 processors to dual 2.5.
is it something i can do or am i stuck with my current set up? if so what can i do to speed it up? i have 2GB ram. new 500GB HD with the current 80GB hard drive.

Out of curiosity, what is the limitation for the upgrades? Does each logic board get "calibrated" for a specific processor type?
The bus speed on the motherboard is fixed, and the G5 processor runs at double the bus speed. Therefore, each motherboard can only be used with one specific CPU speed. So, you can only "upgrade" the processors by replacing the motherboard as well.

  • Enable L3 cache on Dual 800mhz G4 processor

    can anyone help?
i cannot enable the L3 cache on this processor.
im am not sure if it is even working or present
CPUD shows no option to enable it
it does not show in the system profile
Reggie SE show me an error (1018) when i try to enable the L3 cache.
i have tried to use the .kext written by Till Wimmer but i get an error on reboot saying the .kext file was not properly installed.
i am not so sure about using terminal
    any help much appreciated

    hi thanks for the replies,
As far as i am aware the specs show that the Dual 800mhz processor does have an L3 cache, and yes it is from a QS, modded into my DA.
the L3enabler is mounted when i am installing the .kext file.
i am a little unsure with Terminal, i am not sure that i am inputting the commands correctly, i am basically cut+paste the instructions with L3enabler
please correct me if i am doing the totally wrong thing!
step by step instructions would be great, spoon feeding if you like, whilst i cn get my head around the installation of hardware, my knowledge of programming code is VERY limited
(Cracking code for my ZX spectrum in the 80s was easy but i missed out on unix lessons!)

  • Upgrading From Dual Core to Quad Core on an MSI 7246 Power Up Edition

    Good day folks.
I'm upgrading a dual core Pentium Extreme Edition 955 (3.46 GHz) to a quad core Intel QX6800 Extreme Edition (2.93 GHz) which my MSI-7246 Power Up Edition is supposed to support.
I'm running Windows XP with all the latest patches installed.
Are there any special procedures I need to follow to accomplish this without a hitch? I.E., I certainly do no want to have to reinstall the OS.
I've read a couple of posts which talk about deleting the processor entries which are now correctly listed in Device Manager.
Thanks in advance for any help.

I forgot to add, clear CMOS wouldn't hurt before you start it up after the CPU change.
OK. Will do. Sounds like good advice.
    Appreciate the tip.
EDIT: As a follow-up the upgrade went smoothly except for loading the drivers for the 2nd, 3rd & 4th cores. It took me a couple of hours but I finally discovered a work around. Basically, I had to try and manually pick a driver. With Windows XP the list presented under Intel did not contain the one I wanted. However, by picking another one and then bailing at the confirmation window it would somehow put the right one in for a given core.
    Go figure ....

  • Upgrading G3 12" 800Mhz with Ram 640Mb from CD-Room Into DVD-room (CD-RW)

*Hello, Can Somebody Help me, my Ibook G3 12" Dual USB 800Mhz and ram 640Mb have only CD room, but i want to upgrade into a DVD room ( or CD-RW - DVD).*
*I found something Interesting on Ebay, and its cheaper too, but this kind of DVD it's took from Ibook G4.*
*So before i buy this DVD room, anybody can suggest me if this DVD will work with my Ibook G3..*

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
Not easily, no. The optical drive in an iBook G4 is a slot-loading drive, whereas the iBook G3 (Dual USB) has a tray-loading drive.
Some professionals are able to do the modification, but it's beyond the ability of almost anyone else.
If you want DVD capability, the easiest thing to do is to buy another iBook with a DVD drive already installed.
    Good luck.

  • I want to upgrade my ( iMAC 800Mhz Power PC G4 &  iBOOK 700Mhz PC G3)

    Hello!
I want to upgrade if possible over 1GB ? my now slow computer ( iMAC 800Mhz Power PC G4 ) and a ( iBOOK 700Mhz Power PC G3 ) which I don't think I'm confident enough to change the internal memory but the user memory I think I can attempt!
So I'd like to know what type of ram or "model numbers" I should be looking for if I what to upgrade my empty DIMMO /J22 slot to a 1GB ?
Keeping in mind I still have a 256GB factory standard ram in place (256 SDRAM PC133U-333)
i.e. how many pins "184 0r 200" do I need for for my model?
I seen lots off ram types like "Kingston PC2700, 333MHZ DDR 1GB memory "
PC2700 333MHZ is this the model number I should be looking for to upgrade to 1.256?
and for my ( iBOOK 700Mhz Power PC G3 ) is this also able to be upgraded to beyond the the original ibook specs just like it is suggested for the iMAC? which I also have only the original 256 SDRAM and a empty ram slot! again I not sure what model or type of ram I should be looking for here? or what is the max. it can be upgraded to with the new high density ram everyone is talking about!
I know you guy's must seem to answer these by now simple question for you! am sorry I don't have something more challenging for you but I do need your help with this one please!
since you've already done this and seem to know what your doing! I would like to ask for your help or anyone who know the answers to my questions ?
    Thank you in advance!
    Millenniumbug

Unfortunatley, only imac models above 1ghz can take module of 1GB. your model can accomadate 512mb bringing it up to 768Mb which will make a decent improvement.
go to crucial.com and input your imac model to get the right type for your system. it's also best to buy from mac friendly companies as some cheaper modules wont work
    best of luck

  • Mac Mini (late 2012) ram upgrade: 8gb dual channel vs 10gb? Flex Mode?

I attempted to upgrade my Mac Mini (late 2012) from the stock 4gb of ram to 8gb. However, I messed up and didn't pay attention when buying the ram online and ordered 1x8gb stick rather than 2x4. Will losing dual channel with a 2/8 combo (10gb) make a difference that I will notice? Will having the additional 2gb make up for any lost performance? And finally, is flex mode available with the Mac Mini so that I'd still be running 4gb at dual channel and 6gb single?
The 8gb stick arrived and I'd like to install it but Ill send it back and get the 2x4 depending on what I hear back.
    Thanks
    Ryan

to the best of my knowledge, when upgrading your Mac mini's RAM, you must upgrade it with 2 SODIMM's at a time. When I bought my Mac mini Late 2012 model it had all the base level specs. Pretty soon the stock 4GB (2x 2GB) just wasn't fast enough. I bought a Crucial 16GB upgrade from Amazon (2x 8GB) and now my Mini is much faster especially when I am using Photoshop.
Only thing I would do next is trying to swap the boot HD to a SSD, but am unsure as my Mac mini late 2012 is under AppleCare through December 2015 and I do not know if it would void the warranty.

  • Lenovo A916 Has Lost 'Auto-Rotate' Since Upgrade to Dual SIM/Dual Standby

When I first received this phone shortly before Christmas from a UK supplier, it did not operate with Dual Standby. Only rebooting allowed you to swap SIMs.
I have since been successful in updating the firmware build to A916_S1205_141013 which gives me Dual SIM/Dual Standby and is a lot less biased towards a Chinese user and is multi-lingual.
Google services are all there too.
My pleasure was somewhat dampened when I discovered that I can no longer 'auto-rotate' the likes of jpeg files in Gallery. I checked that the facility is turned on in Settings>Display. Apps which force a landscape format, e.g. Netflix work fine.
I loaded an app called Hardware Info which confirms that my phone has a 3-axis accelerometer, which I assume is how it knows which way up it is!
I have also used the ServiceIT app as mentioned in this forum. This confirms that my G-Sensors are working.
Does anyone have any ideas what else I could try to reinstate autorotate?
Incidentally, I got my stock firmware upgrade from www.needrom.com.

  • How to reset java upgrade in dual stack upgrade

    Hi,
We are working on dual stack upgrade. Now we are in downtime phase for both the stacks.I have situation to reset upgarde now.
I restored DB before downtime phase and jup  for java and upg for abap.I am able to reset abap stack.Could anyone please let me know the process to reset java stack.
    Thanks

    Hi,
In order to reset Java Part, you need to restore file system of the same time-stamp which you have restored for database. Since you have restored DB, so shadow repository of Java Part is already gone, so only you need to restore file system.
    Thanks

  • How much will GPU upgrade for Dual 1.25 G4 FW800 help HD rendering times

--"Oh great, not another 'I have an ancient Mac' thread, time to join the 21st century!"
Please hear me out. I don't have a lot of money. Any money I have needs to go to video/photography needs since that is my job. If I bought a proper editing station I couldn't afford to shoot. Currently I shoot HDV but will be shooting Canon 5D mark ii (h.264) soon. I use FCS2, but since I have a Dual 1.25 G4 FW800 I can't use Color or Motion. I would "like" to explore those programs.
Why don't I face reality and buy a new Mac? Because after reading threads like this I am afraid of missing the alleged 32nm Arrandale MBP coming out in a year. The past 7 years with the desktop I've needed to go portable at times so I'd like to get the MBP. I understand it will probably only last ~half as long as would a MacPro. Maybe I'll get rich and can buy a MacPro in a few years...
This Arrandale possibility has me shaken up. I've put off buying a new Mac for so long. I really haven't "needed" to edit intensively. A TV show I'm on is ending and I want to be doing more of my own stuff in the near future. How much, I don't know.
Would buying a new GPU such as the ATI 9800 Pro help me get back into the game? Could I use Color or Motion effectively and will render times in FCP6 be better? I've tried searching here and elsewhere and am certain this had to come up but can't find anything specific to my question. I run Leopard but could go back to Tiger if need be. I've read all the system requirements but want to know first hand knowledge, from those who've tried (FCS2 with a PPC G4). Is it worth an upgrade to hold out another year for a MBP?
    Anything else I should say?

I wouldn't wait another day. There will always be some incredible new upgrade around the corner. Using G5s with HD makes me go insane. I can't imagine a G4. A new graphics card will not help you. Shooting with the Canon 5D will require you to render your h.264 video to an editable format. That only uses the CPU. The GPU will only expend its energy drawing the slowly-updating progress bar on screen. Last week I was on location with a year-old MBP and the conversion times for Canon 5D footage were a bit too long for my tastes. Doing it with an 8-core Mac Pro is significantly better.

  • Upgrades For Dual 1.8GHz G5 Power Mac

    Hi
I have just bought a power mac g5 and i am confused with what some of the other posts are saying about ram. The spec is 1.8 GHz Dual Processor, 1GB Ram (8x128MB Chips), 64MB graphics card. I am looking to upgrade my ram to at least 2 GB. Is the spec i need ddr pc3200 400MHz 184 pin, as this seems to be expensive? i am also looking at upgrading the optical drive so it can read/write dual layer discs, i have found 1 on ebay with lightscribe aswell. should this be ok?
    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&item=35 0227215181
i am also after onboard bluetooth and wireless. i already have a d-link bluetooth usb but would prefer the bluetooth card and antenna. is it one combined card? is it possible to get a wireless n card with this model?

If you want you can get some upgrades from OWC In wookstock, Illinois in the usa . I see you are from the uk that maybe to far for you .What do you want yo upgrade first . I would do the graphics card, but I would get the nvidia 6800 gt or better . they go for about 200 dollars in the us , I dont no how much thats in pounds . But www.owc.com is a good place to look and ebay .
