Upgrading G4 Powerbook from 10.3.9 to Tiger.

Hi,
I haven't posted for a while, but I'm looking to upgrade my Powerbook for the last time, from 10.3.9 to Tiger.
I can't afford a new machine at the moment, so I upgraded my HD and Superdrive, to the best spec I could get at the time.
I don't want to go straight to Leopard, as I don't think it would run very well on my old Powerbook (plus I don't want to have to update all my software!), so I was wondering if anyone could give me any advice on upgrading to the last version of Tiger (10.4.11)?
The main thing that worries me is the old "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" thing.
I remember the logic board/lower RAM slot problem that seemed to raise it's ugly head some where around the 10.4.4 update. Although there was no particular evidence that it was this particular update that caused the problem on the G4 Power PC Powerbooks,I'm still a bit worried as I'd rather not lose the lower RAM slot, if there is any chance that Tiger might have caused it!
My machine was made in Jan 2004, and aside from a few minor problems, it's been fine. I was wondering if anyone out there with the 1.25Ghz model could give me some idea of their experiences, using Tiger on this particular model?
I like to try and keep up with the technology, and I've heard that upgrading the OS can make the computer seem "snappier" (not so much of the "spinning beachball of death"). Plus, I know I can't use a new ipod with anything less than 10.4.
Any help, gratefully appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks eww,
I have Kingston RAM in both slots, 2 512MB chips. I tried cheaper RAM, but the 1.25 machine is extremely "picky" about RAM since my model supports "bus slewing" (which I believe means it cycles between full, and half power when in the "automatic" mode).
I had problems with other RAM, and my machine didn't like having one of the original Hynix 256MB chips, and one of the Kingston ones in the machine at the same time. Since I upgraded to the Kingston PBG433 type of RAM (which I believe Apple often use), I've had no problems.
I assume that Tiger would have no issues with this type of RAM, so I should be OK. Thanks for your advice.

  • Upgrading to Leopard from Tiger on a G4 PowerBook

I tried to upgrade my PowerBook G4 from Tiger to Leopard, but the install disk said that installation wasn't possible. Apparently, however, it managed to install at least part of the OS on my hard drive, because it lists 10.5 as an option when I go to the Startup Disk option.
I'm also unable to reinstall Tiger on my hard drive, so I'm completely stuck. No OS will work for me.
    Any suggestions?

What did the error message say, and when did it appear?

  • How Do I Upgrade My PowerBook G3 Pismo?

(First off, let me just say that this forum has been extremely helpful throughout the years. Thanks to everyone! And, I hope this post (and responses) continues to help those like me in the future!)
I want to upgrade my PowerBook G3 Pismo.
I already have a G4 PowerBook, yet can't tear myself away from my G3 just yet. However, my Pismo needs a huge overhaul. Right now it's running on 192MB of memory, a 6G hard drive, and a 400MHz processor. (I'm running OS 10.3.9, since I don't have enough hard drive space to install 10.4.) (Even most websites have gotten too advanced for my little G3 to view at a reasonable speed.)
Let me also say, I am not a do-it-yourself kinda guy really, so I'm hoping the answers I receive here are easy to follow for the average Joe.
From reading the other posts, I understand the three biggest upgrades to a G3, in order of impact and ease, are:
    1) Memory
    2) Hard Drive
    3) Processor
I would also like to include another relevant element:
    4) Battery Replacement (my battery is completely dead, as you can imagine)
(Another aim for this post is to have one place where people can easily see how to upgrade these things, rather than dig around for each topic.)
Rather than deal with the multitudes of justifications (whether or not I should, etc.), my questions for each of the four items above are simple:
    A) How can I maximize each option? (i.e. - What is the maximum amount of memory I can buy for it? How big of a hard drive can my G3 accommodate and utilize? What is the fastest processor I can use?)
    B) Where is the easiest/best place to purchase each item? (I know that's a bit subjective, but I'm sure there's a general consensus as to where the best, tried-and-true replacement batteries are sold, etc. (At least, I hope so.))
    C) How do I do-it-myself? (i.e. - Is there a specific URL or post that tells me how to physically replace the memory and hard drive, etc.?)
Again, thanks very much to all of you who help out in the posting of answers to all of us who are less technically advanced!

    Hollywood Guy:
You have hit upon a favorite topic around here, as you have already noticed.
The place to begin your upgrade is with RAM. The Pismo will support a total of 1 GB of RAM. 2 - PC 100 3.3v 144-pin SO-DIMM. You will find comparative prices of popular brands at ramseeker. You will also get good prices at Kahlon. The Pismo is not very picky about RAM and most manufacturers warranty their RAM for life.
The next upgrade that will give the biggest bang for the buck is the Hard Disk Drive. As noted previously, your computer will support up to a 120 GB HDD natively. (The BootROM will actually see 128 GB, but most manufactuers standardize the size to 120 GB). It is possible to install a larger HDD with the help of SpeedTools. However, I have not used the product, so I cannot vouch for it. Here is a list of available HDDs available for your Pismo at OWC
In terms of a processor upgrade, this is the most expensive upgrade and unless one really loves the Pismo, it may not be cost effective in the long run. I have done it myself, but then Pismo is my primary computer and I use it constantly and extensively for all my computing needs. Although we Pismo aficionados love our machines, we are also aware of it's limitations. If one would like to run any OS beyond Tiger, for example, you will need a minimum of a G with 867 MB processor, and even with a processor upgrade the Pismo will not make the cut.
So while I recommend the first two upgrades without qualification or reservation, the processor upgrade is different. If you decide that you really want to do it after careful consideration, I suggest that you peruse this thread for a full exploration of the subject. Several vendors are mentioned in the thread. My G4/550 processor upgrade is a Wegenermedia, but I hesistate to recommend them, as, since my installation I have learned of several users who have had difficulty with their service and products.
Please do post back with specific questions on any of the topics mentioned.
    Cheers

  • Upgrade from 10.3.9 to tiger and can no longer restart or shutdown

I upgraded my powerbook G4 with 1 gb of ram with tiger recently and ever since, I can not reboot or shutdown without holding down the powerbutton. The system shuts down all programs and then hangs on the desktop with no applications running... just a blank screen.
If I press the powerbutton, the window that prompts you what you want to do (shutdown, restart) comes up, but does not do anything.
    I use file vault.
Any ideas? I can not find anything on this on any support site. I can not reinstall the OS again... as I can not restart into the CD or boot from a CD by holding down C.

I'm about to trash this mac and by a PC!

Since you can't boot from the Tiger install disc to run Disk First Aid repair, you can run FSCK instead with instructions for doing so provided per this link.

  • Can't upgrade my PowerBook G4, now at 10.4.11 to 10.5. It meets all system requirements!

I need to upgrade my PowerBook G4 to 10.5 so that I can use the current version of iTunes. When I talked to the Apple tech guy he said my PowerBook specs indicate that it can run OS 10.5. Specs are: PowerBook G4 15" 1.5Ghz 1 GB memory plenty of disc space, Firewire and attached screen. All listed on the install disc for 10.5. When I start up the install, I select English and two seconds later a window pops up saying it can't install on this computer. Doesn't state why or what is missing! ARGGHH!! I double checked everything, ran disk utility, opened the battery compartment to verify (1.5GHz/1GB/80G/SuperDrive/BT/APX/Backlit KB). So all hardware requirements are met.
The disc says Mac OS version 10.5, AHT version 3A137, Disc version 1.0, 2Z691-6150-A.
    Can anyone help?

  • Upgrading 12" Powerbook G4 hard drive & OS X 10.5--please help?

So, I’ve decided I want to venture into upgrading my Powerbook G4 hard drive, RAM, and OS. Currently I have:
    512 RAM
    1.5 Ghz
    80 GB 5400 HD
    Mac OS X 10.4.11
What I would like to upgrade to:
    1.25GB RAM (max)
    1.5 Ghz
    160-320GB 5400 (7200 if possible) HD
    Mac OS X 10.5
Now here comes my questions. The RAM upgrade is straightforward. The HD upgrade seems simple enough when using tutorials on ifixit.com. I am wondering though, does the HD need to be ATA-100 or could it be ATA-133? Are DMA, Ultra DMA, UDMA, DMA-100, ATA, ATA-100, IDE, and EIDE all the same thing and all compatible with the 12" powerbook G4?
Assuming the hard drive speed is 5400 and I have RAM maxed out, are there performance differences between say a 160GB 5400 HD and a 320GB 5400 HD? Would it be better just to get the biggest HD that is compatible with my PB?
Also, FRYS.COM has "retail hard drive kits" and "bare HDs" What’s the difference between the two?
    Finally:
Once I figure out which HD I want, I will have new: Hard Drive, RAM, and a Mac OS X 10.5 DVD Purchased from an Apple Store. I will install the RAM. Now I will be left with a HD and OSX 10.5 DVD...how do I get the new OS on the new HD?

The hard drive needs to be a parallel ATA 2.5" notebook hard drive. ATA-100 or ATA-133 or the others you listed don't matter. You cannot use a serial ATA or SATA hard drive, that's important. Here are two online stores and their parallel ATA drives available: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010150380%201035907 889&name=ATA-6 and http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-drives/2.5-Notebook/ (Click on 2.5" ATA laptop drives).
You'll note there aren't any 7200rpm drives listed, as they aren't made anymore for the parallel ATA interface. Choose whatever size works for you, and if increasing the size, make sure you have capacity to backup the new, larger hard drive, as you fill it up.
You only need the bare hard drive. There can be a difference between a retail boxed version versus OEM, as the warranty can be different, but that's about it.
After you install the hard drive, you insert the first OS X disk in the system, boot holding the C key down (so the system boots from the disk), choose Disk Utility from the menu bar, and partition the drive. Once done, you can do the OS X installation. If you don't hold the C key down and the system wants to install OS X, after you tell it what language you want, as soon as a menu bar appears, then you can run Disk Utility.

  • TS1363 I was upgrading iPhone OS from 5.1 to 5.1.1 on Win 7 using iTunes 10.6.1.7.  The iPhone hung.  It is no longer visible by iTunes on Win 7

While upgrading iPhone OS from 5.1 to 5.1.1 on Win 7 using iTunes 10.6.1.7, the iPhone hung.  I could not get iTunes to find it and Win 7 does not see it.
When I connect the iPhone to the USB, Win 7 issues the welcome sound, but that is it.  The same happens when I disconnect iPhone.
The Devise Manager has the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver correct without any problem.  I updated this driver called usbaapl64.
    The iPhone is still hung.
    I restarted the iPod service
I restarted the Apple Mobile Device Service
I tried to empty and delete the temp directory in C:\users\myname\AppData\Local\ but could not
The iTunes I am using is the latest version
I updated the Apple Mobile Device Driver as stated above correctly
The iPhone is still hung and is not recognized by Win 7 or iTunes, so I cannot restore the OS to the previous working version
What else can I do to restore the previous working OS on my iPhone 4

I was connecting the iPhone 4 to a USB 3.0 port.  I was told by Apple Express Support (at US$29.99) not to use USB 3.0 and to use USB 2.1 instead.
If you are connecting your iPhone to the computer using a USB 3.0 port, disconnect it immediately.  iPhones will lock up if you try to update while  using a connection through a USB 3.0 port.
Disconnect the iPhone from the computer
Go to Device Manager and find the connected USB port.  Click the mouse right button and update the driver
Shut the iPhone by pressing the sleep button and the home button concurrently for some time
Move the USB cable to a USB 2.1 port or older without the iPhone.
    Restart iTunes.
    Connect the iPhone
Your computer should recognize the phone and reloads the correct USB 2.1 driver (Apple Mobile Device)
Then iTunes should recognize the iPhone and starts reloading the firmware.
When that is complete it may ask if you wish to restore, naturally you say YES
    iTunes will restore the iOS
Using iTunes, restore the latest backup to get your data back.
When all of the above is completed.  Start enjoying your iPhone.
If the above does not work.  Throw your iPhone out of the window and get a replacement Android phone.

I upgraded MacbookPro 2009 from 10.6.8 to Yosemite 2 weeks ago. My iphoto is now a nightmare. i went to our local apple retailer but they could not help either. Perhaps someone can help. Beforehand the OS upgrade I made a backup copy of my Iphoto library onto an external hard drive. Lets call it BU with 50GB. I also deleted half of my photos from the default library on my laptop, lets call it DE, now with about 20GB, to gain space. I then upgraded to Yosemite.
I have also installed since a long time Iphoto Library Manager 3.8.6. (this may be the cause of the problem as it was not upgraded and perhaps thus not compatible with iphoto 9.6 which I have now after the upgrade to Yosemite) It all worked fine before the upgrade, switching in iphoto between the two libraries DE and BU.
It also worked fine after the upgrade for a few days. At one stage Iphoto asked me to upgrade the iphoto version as it otherwise could not read the photos when I tried to load the BU library into iphoto. I did click yes to upgrade iphoto. As a result I became a brand new but totally empty library, no photos.
BU was still on the external disc, however the "Master" file was empty. We fortunately discovered all photos were in another file called Old Master, also under BU. We made another copy of the Old Master file onto the external disc. Lucky we did, because shortly afterwards we could not open anymore the BU file thus had no access to anything in there. Now I have 17000 photos in a file called Old Master on my external disc and another smaller library  DE on my laptop. When I tried to import the photos from Old Master into a new iphoto library it was very messy. All events dates were mixed up, many photos were imported twice. I have no idea whether all my 17000 photos have been imported.
Can anyone suggest what is the most time efficient way? How do I best import my 17000 into a new library ensuring I don't loose any in the process. I do not wish sorting through 17000 photos for a week or so. Shall i also get a new iphoto library version now? Thank you for anything that may work.

Yes, the Old Master file has a folder for each year where I find all photos from that specific year. I am attaching a screen shot of the file.
In the meantime i have managed to download all photos (it did not download any video files though in mpg, avi, 3gp, m4v,mp4 and mov format) to a new iphoto library. Unfortunately the photos are quite mixed and often doubled up. I ma considering to purchase iphoto library which checks all duplicates in iphoto. this will save me a lot of time. What do you think?

  • Upgrade ONS15454 MSTP from 7.0 to 9.8

    Hi all
I would like to some help that customer need to upgrade ONS15454 MSTP from version 7.0 to 9.8. So, I may need some help
    1. how to upgrade it ?a
    2. Is it possible to direct upgrade to 9.8?
    3. I saw many file information in cisco web site, and which one i must to download it ? ( ONS 15454 R9.8.0 System Software for MultiService Transport Platform, ONS 15454 R9.8.0 System Software for Multiservice Transport Platform - Lite Version for TCC2P/TCC3 -WSON) I do not know which one is to using
    4. what should i know that my card support version 9.8? In my idea, i think it should be support but i may need confirm or information from this before. (my card have OSC-CSM, OPT-PRE, AD-2C, MXP-10DME and TCCP2)
    5. Have any interrupt between upgrade ? and Is it upgrade in each TCCP2? because that may help when card reset or reboot. And the traffic still flow to another TCC2P.
    Thanks
    V

    1. I try to using your upgrade tool, my ONS15454 is SDH version 7.0  so, I can choose only 9.3 for destination version. It means that i must  to upgrade to 9.3 first and then go to 9.6 and 9.8, Correct?
yes it is true you go directly to 9.3.0, it is not a multi-shelf node.
please be sure that your software version is 7.0.0.
So upgrade path is 7.0.0 to 9.3.0
    2. Is  it possible to upgrade without downtime ? as my understand that  ONS15454 have 2 site (east and west), Can i do upgrade east site before  west site? and when finish upgrade east site and go to upgrade west site  after that, can i ?
becase as i understand when finish upgrade  per site all card in that site will reboot, so, i think that another  site will take the traffic without downtime. I don't sure that i am  correct or not if you have any mention please let's me know
    no not possible without downtime,
there will be a traffic hit or 10seconds or less than that, it you are using MXP_MR_2.5G cards without Y-cable protection. same for GE_XP cards there will be a traffic loss for few seconds.
yes you can upgrade east node and after that upgrdae west node, but not like doing upgrade to 9.8 for one node and another still on 7.0
    3. I don't have multishelf, i just have one shelf per site
    4.  I have plan to upgrade to customer soon, but i may need to give a plan  for them. But right now, i may confuse about the way and solution to  upgrade that include how and impact to upgrade.
    1. There will be a traffic impact on MXP and GE_XP card for less than 10 seconds.
    2. If MXP client ports are y-cable provisioned, than upgrade will be error less, in case of Y-cable protection just lock protection before proceeding to upgrade.
    3. traffic will impact as MXP cards have to do FPGA upgrade also and for this they will take a reboot, but in case of y-cable other card is taking over.
    4. As you have TCC2P card, so always select lite versions, if its SDH than SDH-DWDM.
    5. also if possible, arrange spare TCC2P card, atleast one at each site, just to be on safe side.
    6. here is the path which you have to follow:
    7.0.0 to 9.3.0
    9.3.0 to 9.6.0
    9.6.0 to 9.8.0
also please feel free to reach for any queries.

I have upgraded Apple Aperture from version 2 to version 3 and I'm having a problem with the "Highlights and Shadows" adjustment. According to the user's manual, I should have access to an advanced disclosure triangle which would allow me to adjust mid contrast, colour, radius, high tonal width and low tonal width.
If anyone has any suggestions as to how to access this advanced section, I'd be most grateful.

    Hi David-
The advanced adjustments in the Highlights & Shadows tool were combined into the "Mid Contrast" slider in Aperture 3.3 and later. If you have any images in your library that were processed in a version of Aperture before 3.3, there will be an Upgrade button in the Highlights & Shadows tool in the upper right, and the controls you asked about under the Advanced section. Clicking the Upgrade button will re-render the photo using the new version of Highlights & Shadows, and the Advanced section will be replaced with the new Mid Contrast slider. With the new version from 3.3 you probably don't need the Advanced slider, but if you want to use the older version you can download it from this page:

    Backup iPad
Connect to iTunes and downlaod newest version of iTunes and then newest iOS

    upgrade to newest iOS
I knew somethign was wrong when it took about 6 hours to upgrade the iPad
at the end it errored with this message error (-50), but the upgrade worked
I was expecting to see all my photos but didn't see them

    Your help is much appreciated

    Hi Eric Ferguson,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
For troubleshooting on this, take a look at this article:
iTunes: Specific update-and-restore error messages and advanced troubleshooting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3694
    Error 13, 14, 35 and 50 (or -50)
These errors are typically resolved by performing one or more of the steps listed below:
Perform USB isolation troubleshooting, including trying a different USB port directly on the computer. See the advanced steps below for USB troubleshooting.
Put a USB 2.0 hub between the device and the computer.
    Try a different USB 30-pin dock-connector cable.
    Eliminate third-party security software conflicts.
There may be third-party software installed that modifies your default packet size in Windows by inserting one or more TcpWindowSize entries into your registry. Your default packet size being set incorrectly can cause this error. Contact the manufacturer of the software that installed the packet-size modification for assistance. Or, follow this article by Microsoft: How to reset Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) to reset the packet size back to the default for Windows.
Connect your computer directly to your Internet source, bypassing any routers, hubs, or switches. You may need to restart your computer and modem to get online.
Try to restore from another known-good computer and network.

  • Missing all photos and events after upgrading to Photos from iPhoto

I just upgraded to photos from iPhoto.
When I opened Photos for the first time it asked if I wanted to move / import from iPhoto to the new photos app I said yes.
A message came up that said that I needed to repair the permissions on my iPhoto library I said ok.
When the library opened in Photos there was nothing there. It was as if the library was brand new with instructions on how to add images and events.  I went to iPhoto to open the library. Same thing iPhoto now looks like new with information on how to import photos and create events!
Where are all of my images?
How do I get them back?
    Thanks!

HA! User Error. Supper embarrassing. So... Is there a way to delete this request?
