Upgrading graphics card & power supply in a new P6674y

I just purchased a new Hp 6674y computer and wanted to upgrade the video card.  Reading here on the forums I got some good ideas for video cards for comparable computers to mine and also found out the power supply is going to need to be upgraded also.  My question is, can anyone tell me if there is a specific size, type or model of power supply that my particular model MUST use?  Or can I get a "standard" ATX 12v 600w or so, and replace it.  Also will an EVGA Nvidia GTX 460 graphics card fit into this case?  Thanks in advance for the help!

Hi,
A standard size ATX will fit.  I am using the GTX 460 1 GB in one of my PCs (e9280t) which has nearly the same cabinet as your PC.  I bought a Corsair HX 650 but there are other choices.
How to replace a power supply.
How to replace a video card.
You should open up your PC and measure the physical dimensions of your power supply.  Here is a list of things to consider:
Specifications
Total wattage - important
12+ volt amperage rating - important
Modular - not mandatory but I like the flexibility
Warranty
i7 and SLI ready
Efficiency rating
Cost
Physical size -- standard ATX PSU is 5.5" by 5.9" by 3.4" give or take a few tenths
www.newegg.com has lots of PSUs choices.  Corsair, OCZ, Rosewill, Thermaltake.....

  • HP H8-1020 - Upgrading graphics card/power supply

    Hey,
Looking to give my almost 5 year old PC a much needed graphics card boost. As mentioned in the title, I have a HP h8-1020. After reading other posts from users on this forum, It seems that the power supply provided with this model (300W) is completely insufficient for any new, decent graphics card.
    I also use a 27 inch Samsung S27D360 Monitor.
I read that some people used the corsair CX500/600 with a Nvidia GT X series (2Gb) card as a suitable upgrade. However I don't know much about power supplies or performance graphics cards.  I'm not looking for an absolute top of the line card, just one that can run most modern high-intensity graphics games. I'm hoping for a price range of about $100 for the power supply, and no more than $200 for the graphics card.
Here are some of the games that I would like to run on high - max settings (preferably in 1920x1080):
    Diablo 3
    Skyrim
    Grand Theft Auto V
    The Elder Scrolls: Online
Any help with suggestions for a new power supply/graphics card would be appreciated. Thanks!

    Hi,
The Corsair CX600 would be a good choice for a power supply as would the Corsair CS650m.
You have an older PC which usually requires an older generation graphics cards.  The NVIDIA GTX 660 would be a good choice.
ZOTAC makes a number of graphics cards that are compatible back to PCI-E version 1.1.  Model  ZT-90101-10P is compatible back to PCI-E version 1.1 and is available at Best Buy.
Know what the return policy is before you buy.

  • HP 6654 upgrade video card/power supply

I am interested in upgrading my video card from a current ATI Radeon HD 4200 to a "EVGA GeForce GTX 960 SuperSC ACX 2.0+ 2GB GDDR5 128bit, PCI-E 3.0 Dual-Link DVI-I, 3 x DP, HDMI, SLI, HDCP, G-SYNC Ready Graphics Cards 02G-P4-2966-KR".  Will this graphics card fit for my cpu and work correctly with the motherboard?
I will be adding 4additional giggabites to increase the total instaled memory (RAM) to 8GB as well.
And in addition, i will purchase a 400 watt power supply.
Will this work for my current Pavilion 6654?

You are very welcome!  Thank you for the additional information.
As I suspected, your computer has a standard BIOS.  This means that you will have to buy an older video card.  I like EVGA products.  I suggest finding a card that you like and contacting the manufacturer's Tech Support (EVGA Tech Support 1-888-880-3842) to make certain that it will work in your computer.  This is the best way that I have found to not have to make a return.  The last card that EVGA made that used a standard BIOS was their GT 640.  Some of theirs do have an update for the VBIOS that allows them to run with a standard BIOS.
Now, for the power supply unit (PSU).  I like Corsair products.  I normally recommend at least 500W.  This allows for future upgrades.  A modular PSU is good for smaller cases.  You only have to use the cables that are necessary, allowing for better airflow.  You should measure the existing PSU and compare the measurements to the one that you choose.  All of the connectors should be compatible.

  • Upgrading graphic card on HP DC 8300 CMT

    Dear HP,
I try to upgrade graphic card, on HP DC 8300 CMT (Intel® Core™ i7-3770 Processor, Intel HD Graphics 4000 )
with Nvidia Asus GeForce GTX 650 Ti.
As stock power supply doesnt meet requirements, I installed an additional  FSP Group Booster X5 450W.
Once I turn PC on, it reboots 3 times, and eventually it continues to use onboard graphic and windows 7 loads as usual .
like if new graphic card is not present. (not detected by windows)
Bios version is latest and particular option  for disableing integrated graphic is grayed out- not accessible.
Is there any explanation why this happens ?
On DC 8100 sff It automaticaly disabled onboard graphic, altough it was low consumption Radeon HD 7750 Low Profile card, and there was no any problem.

  • Problem with upgrading Graphics Card from GTX 635 to GTX 960

    Greetings,
I'm new to upgrading hardware in computers but have decided that I wanted to upgrade my graphics card in my HP Envy 700 - 329 (Nvidia GTX 635) to an Nvidia GTX 635. The only problem is I have never opened a computer and have no idea what cable to put where or how to take my old Graphics Card out to put my new one in, and I'm very worried because I might mess up.  Is there any video tutorial/ guide out there that is convinient to my desktop for me to upgrade?
    Thanks,
    Marwan
P.S. Is the space in the Envy 700-329 large enough for the GTX 960?

    Hi there
Welcome to the HP Support Forums! It is a great place to find the help you need, both from other users, HP experts and other support personnel. I understand that you are looking at upgrading your internal video adapter from a Nvidia GTX 635 to a Nvidia GTX 690. I am happy to help with this. FIrst thing, you must be aware of before you buy any video adapter upgrade, is the power requirements of the card, the recommended minimum output for the computer's power supply,  the size of the card, the required expansion slot type, and the type of power connectors that must be available for the card from your system power supply. Starting with a comparison of the card you have with the one you are thinking to install:GeForce GT 635 (OEM) Specifications - www.geforce.comBus Support - PCI-E 3.0 Height 2.731 inchesLength 5.70 inchesslotWidth SingleMaximum Graphics Card Power (W)  35W GeForce GTX 690 Specifications - www.geforce.comBus Support - PCI Express 3.0Height 4.776 inchesLength 11.0 inchesslotWidth Dual-slotMaximum Graphics Card Power (W)               300WMinimum System Power Requirement (W) 650WSupplementary Power Connectors                Two 8-pin Your computer has the following:
Power Supply Internal Total wattage: 460W  - too lowDimensions: 150mm x 140mm x 86mm (5.9 x 5.5 x 3.4 inches) I have highlighted the items you will need to be aware of in red, before trying to install this card. Because the stock power supply is 460W, it will also need to be replaced, because the card requires that your power supply meet a minimum output of 650W, and that power supply needs to also have two 8-pin supplementary power connectors. I included the dimensions of your current power supply so you have a guide to the type of space you have and form of the power supply to help with finding something that will fit in that space. Also I highlighted the fact that the card you are looking at is significantly larger in all dimensions, so you can make sure it will fit inside the case or have an idea of what cabling may need to be moved, and because it is a dual-slot width, it may block another slot on your main board. Because of all of these issues you may want to consider talking to a local computer tech or a tech savvy friend to help you with this, and maybe save some money as well. I did not include the instructions on how to replace the card itself, because of the other issues, which you will need to check on first. I hope this helps, or does not confuse the matter more, but reading your post I realized you were probably not aware of these little roadblocks.

    Hi:
Graphics adapters cannot be upgraded simply.
You would need to replace the motherboard with one that would have better graphics (if one exists for your model).
This would cost as much as buying a new notebook, so it is probably not a good idea to undertake such an endeavor.

  • What upgrade graphic card do i need for a early 2008 mac pro

I have a early 2008 Mac Pro.  ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT 256 MB is what i have now.  What is a good upgrade graphic card to get.

The GTX 780 6GB runs fine on the dual PCIe internal power cables -- as does the GTX 680 and Radeon HD 7950. The same can't be said of the GTX TITAN or GTX 780 Ti or Radeon R9 280X -- all of which require an auxiliary power feed to avoid a nasty power down of your tower at the worst moment when too much wattage is demanded of the Mac Pro's factory power supply.
Did I mention that the GTX 780 with 6GB of GDDR5 matches the 6GB of GDDR5 in the TITAN?
The one fallacy to my 'sweet spot' award has to do with OpenCL. In case you hadn't noticed, the AMD Radeon GPUs smoked the NVIDIA GeForce GPUs running Photoshop's OpenCL accelerated Iris Blur filter and rendering LuxMark's OpenCL accelerated Room scene.
So depends on budget, whether you want a PC card for less but no "early EFI boot screen" prior to drivers loading, and what apps and needs you have.
The one thing for sure is that 2600XT should have been retired ages ago and even more so with 10.8.3 and above, it could be trouble or just... PITA/POS.

  • Full Screen slide show not functional since upgrading Graphics card??

Just upgraded to a geforce fx 5200 graphics card...now the individual full screen pic or the full screen slideshow will not function. Get Fatal Error C0000005 at Address: 6e310c01. Dumps me out of Photoshop album starter edition 3.0. I have about 1000 images in multiple groups, files, email shares, etc and need to be able to get back to functionality. This has occurred since installing the graphics card mentioned. Is the newer 3.2 version an "upgrade" to 3.0. If I download it will it overwrite the existing version and still have all of my photos in place? It's an option I am considering to try to get back to properly functioning. ANY I repeat ANY help would be appreciated...THANKS....

I have a Geforce FX5500 card & updated the driver for it, why I have no idea! Anyway the slideshow came up with some sort of major error & as I already knew using bang up to date graphics card driver stops certain old games working I rolled back the driver from the 23/4/08 (approx) version to driver version 6.14.10.9371 dated 22/10/06. Different card I know but an older driver may sort it.

  • Help! Card Power Supply wanted!

    Dear all,
My Power Book G3 (bought in 1999) has collapsed. In October 2006 (note, 2 1/2 months ago) I switched it on and felt a bad smell ... a strange noise and after it it was "dead". I took it to the seller (in the meantime they changed a lot their organization) and now they are telling me what follows:
"The code of the spare part broken is
    Card Power Supply - 661-2029
Unfortunately it's not possible to submit you an offer for repairing the machine since the part is no more in the Apple catalogue.
We don't guarantee anyway that even by substituting the part your machine can work again since Power Book G3 is out the Apple Support and therefore it's not possible to check it".
I've asked them to give me back my G3.
    My idea is
    - to find out if there is a way to find somewhere this Card Power Supply.
It's not necessary to tell you how much I am affectionate to my "baby".
    Can someone help me?
Since the machine is still at the Apple Shop I can't tell you for the time being what family it belongs to, anyway as soon as I have it back I'll post other technical info about the model.
    THANK YOU 2K!!!!!!!!

In the US, " No new parts are available any more" is exactly what Apple would tell you.
There are other vendors who repair MacBooks and PowerBooks. Used parts are plentiful, since some of these machines die and the remaining good parts are sold.
This vendor sells used and some new parts, and also has illustrated guides to how to repair.

Click on the "Begin Installation" button to see how these look.
I am sure there are vendors in Italy who offer repair services for older PowerBooks. Since the parts are not new, warranties may be only a month or two instead of a year.

    Hi:
Unfortunately in most of today's notebooks (including yours), the graphics cannot be upgraded.
I looked at the service manual for your notebook, and there aren't even any other motherboards with better graphics available.
You can try the latest drivers from AMD to see if that helps, any but you can't do anything with the hardware.

  • Can I use the old power supply with the new unit?

I have a second generation Apple TV. When I install the new unit next week can I use the old power supply with the new one and the new power supply with the old one? This would save some messing with cords behind the units.

    Hello:
I would definitely not try that.....  The power supplies may be compatible - or may not be compatible.  I think messing with cables is a small price to pay for not potentially frying a new device.

  • P7-1490 upgrade Graphics Card and Power Supply

I just got a GEFORCE GTX 650TI Boost graphics card.  The 300 watt Power Supply on my P7-1490 can't handle it because I need a 6 pin power connector.  The 1490 comes with a 300 Watt Power Supply.  I need something at least 450 watts.  Which upgrade will fit my box.  In addition, can the Jasmine Motherboard handle the new graphics card.  It does fit into the PCI Express slot.

Please consider the Corsair CX500, CX500M, CX600, or CX600M power supplies for your needs. Yes, the Jasmine motherboard in your p7-1490 should be capable of handling the GTX 650 Ti. Additionally, you will need to disable "Secure Boot" and possibly enable "Legacy Support" in the BIOS before installing the GTX 650 Ti.
