Upgrading hard drive to ibook G3 500 Mhz 12"

Hello, I am getting ready to upgrade the hard drive to my powerbook g4 1.5Mhz 12" aluminum. My husband has a ibook G3 500Mhz that currently has a 8MB hard drive (I know, it is ridiculously small). Anyways, can I take my old powerbook g4 hard drive and upgrade his ibook with it? I saw an older post that said this was cool with a 600 MHz ibook G3, but am not sure if this is different for our machine. Also, any recommendations for upgrading the RAM to his ibook? Thanks!

It should work, but it's ridiculously hard:
http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Repair/iBook-G3-12-Inch-Hard-Drive/130/1
How much RAM is installed? There is only one user-accessible RAM slot in the iBook, and the maximum RAM that is made for that slot is a 512 MB RAM module. It takes a 3.3 V, PC100 or PC133 compliant, 1.25 inch SDRAM SO-DIMM (144-pin).

Instructions for replacing the RAM can be found in this Apple Knowledge Base article:

  • Upgrading Hard Drive on iBook

    Hi,
I was wondering if anyone has had there hard drive upgraded by the Apple Store. My friend got a 1.2 ghz iBook about 1 year ago, and needs a bigger hard drive. I could do ti for him, but would feel more comfortable having the Apple store do it. If anyone has done this before, please reply. My other quetion is how much this would cost, and if Apple would also re-install OS X onto the new drive. Thanks in advance. MRCUR

    Hi MRCUR,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
I don't usually suggest upgrading your hard drive for a couple of reasons. One being that it puts it elevates the risk of future problems with the iBook. If you (or your friend) would like to no more reasons why I don't suggest upgrading as well another option, let me know.
If your friend really would like to upgrade your hard drive, you may want to look into PowerBookResQ. They do both upgrades as well as troubleshooting. Look into it, their services come with a 90 day warranty as well as extended warranty options.

  • Upgrading hard drive... need help on how to prepare current CS6 for reinstall on new hard drive

I'm about to upgrade my hard drive to a larger one and will need to reinstall my CS6 Web/Design Suite... I've seen many people having issues with activation and licensing after they reformat their computers or buy a new one and try to install the programs on the new "system". How should I go about preparing my Adobe software on the current hard drive so I won't have any issues resintalling on the new hard drive? I will be installing CS6 Student/Teacher version on Windows 7 Pro 64-bit...
    Thanks for the help!

    Thanks!
I wondered if that was all I needed, but when I built my new system and installed PS CS4 I kept getting errors. So, I went back to the old system and deactivated it and still got errors. Uninstalled it deactivated and still got errors on the new system. When I talked to Adobe they just kept telling me the key was invalid (even though I had been running that same program and key for the last 4 years without problems lol) and it was not a burnt copy or pirated. I had the orginal box with the original DVD case and serial number on the case... A friend of mine had upgraded their rig and went to a Suite so he gave me his CS4. But, needless to say (as it is said all over these forums apparently) Adobe was of no help at all so I had to buy a new version. I'm not looking to go through all of that BS again, haha.
So as long as I deactivate the Suite (or do I need to deactivate each program separately?) I should be able to reformat (or upgrade hard drives) and reinstall CS6 as many times as I want? (I usually do a reformat like once a year to keep my computers clean and free of junk that may have been downloaded by other household members...)

    gj,
Unless it has worked since the upgrading, I believe you should uninstall, run the Cleaner Tool, and reinstall.
Use the CC Cleaner Tool to solve installation problems | CC, CS3-CS6

What is the best upgrade hard drive for an A1342 (white macbook)?

Absolutely. I put a Samsung 840 in my early 2009 white macbook and it is the best computer upgrade I've ever done. I've also put an OWC SSD in my late 2009 iMac and highly recommend their drives. http://eshop.macsales.com

  • I have a 2008 Mac Book Pro partitioned running windows and are running out of drive space. Can I upgrade hard drive for more capacity?

I have a 2008 Mac Book Pro partitioned running windows and are running out of drive space. Can I upgrade hard drive for more capacity? I purchased a faster drive initially, but has 200 GB capacity. I am running out of room and would like to upgrade for more space if possible.
    Can anyone suggest an alternative?

You don't need to partition your drive to run Fusion, only if you want to run Bootcamp.
If you have space on your Windows partition, I would suggest you backup your Windows partition, and then, delete the partition using Disk Utility.
You can now restore your virtual machine to a single volume or repartition if you prefer.
I would consider upgrading to a unibody MBP (used, refurbished will do) just to be able to access the HD. Opening the pre-unibody MBP is not something you would want to do.

  • New 60 gb hard drive installed, ibook will not reboot

This is my first time using this type of support. Please share your advice as I learn the appropriate "norms" of the discussion system.
    Computer:
    2001 apple g3 ibook
    dual usb ports
    500 mgh
    320 DRAM
10gb hard drive just swapped out for a 60 gb hard drive
    Operating System:
I started out with the OS9 and OSX system configuration... I have since changed over to OSX exclusively... My current system is OSX 3.9 .
I have the original install disks and all of the other OSX upgrade disks available...
    Problem:
My ibook kept saying that I did not have enough space on my start-up drive... I bought and installed a 60 gb hard drive after backing my hard drive up on an external hard drive.
I am unable to reboot my ibook after the install. I have tried holding the C button on start-up. I get a smiling face folder with a question mark flashing every few minutes. I have tried holding the X button on start-up. I get a "padlock_________arrow button". I have tried to put in my administrative password in the space between the padlock and the arrow button. When I do this, I see lots of dots flashing from left to right. I was hoping that the ibook was trying to boot from the external hard drive.
I have not tried to reboot with the original install disks that I received in 2001. I will try this today.
I am assuming that I put the install disk in and hold the C button as the chime sounds... If this gets me into the system, then what do I do...
    I thought I knew what I was doing...but...
Thank you for your help and advice.

First please confirm what sort of install disks you have. Your iBook originally shipped with 10.0.3. Do you have the 10.3.x Panther retail full install CDs?
    Hello:
Thank you for responding so quickly!
I do have the 10.0.3 install disks. I also have the full 10.2 install disk. I have the 10.3 update disk.
    Problem:
I have tried to boot up using the 10.0.3 and the 10.2 install disks. I held the C button down as the chime was ending. I released the C button when I saw the folder symbol appear on my desktop... The folder has the OSX image on it... I do not have a curser available...
    Any ideas?
I am trying to think back... I backed up my original hard drive to an external hard drive... I was under the impression that the external would act as a "bootable" disk...
I installed a new 60 gb hard drive.
I tried to reboot my computer with the C button pushed for the disk start up... folder appears with OSX logo on it.
and with the option down... also the X down... padlock appears with an arrow to its right.

    Stearns Sensei

This is from my invoice, is there a way to get system info off my notebook that I can copy/paste? (unlike Win system info)
My harddrive has been full for a while and I'm looking to get a 1 tb drive and possibly SSD  I'm also continually running out of memory as I have a gazillion browsers, tabs and apps open.
    Just looked on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/HGST-Travelstar-2-5-Inch-7200RPM-Mobile/dp/B0097LG9U8/
I read about adding SSD and should mention that my DVD player doesn't work anymore, so maybe I can put something else in it.   I also don't use wireless G3 etc, just regular wireless DSL.
    Greatly appreciate suggestions, thanks!

If you don't need a WWAN card I would put a mSata SSD and install the OS and programs there. Then replace your 500GB with a 1TB drive.
Another option would be to replace the HDD with a standard 2.5" SSD, remove the optical drive, replace it with a HDD caddy and put a 1TB HDD there
OR... You put the mSata SDD in the WWAN slot, replace your 500GB with a 1TB drive AND add another 1TB with the caddy instead of the optical drive
Plenty of options with a T520, it's a great ThinkPad

  • Upgrade Hard Drive

    Hello,
Imac5,1 Intel core 2 Duo, 2.1GHz 20inch display. I need to upgrade my hard drive (current 250 GB)
If I replaced it with Seagate 750 GB , or 500 GB
Is there an issue with over heating the computer?
    Thanks in advance

Yesterday I went to Genius Bar and asked them if they can upgrade my hard drive ...
The Genius told me that Apple does like to do that. They like to keep the systems the same way
that the warranty is under. Since I am under warranty (also bought a
Apple protection plan), they suggested me to go to an approved apple service and have the drive
upgrade. Then if I do that I'll be happy with my bigger drive and it will void the warranty.
After that everything went blank and last thing that I remember was the security guard guiding me out the door!

  • Upgrading Hard Drive from 200GB (7,200rpm) to 320GB (7,200rpm)

I very much would like to upgrade the hard drive in my MacBook Pro 17" from the supplied 200GB 7,200rpm to the newer larger capacity of the 320GB 7,200rpm being recently made available.
I purchased my MacBook Pro 17" as a custom spec in the second half of 2008. At the time it had to be ordered as a custom spec in order to have it supplied with the maximum 4GB RAM, only weeks before it became a standard spec on the current MacBook Pro 17" along with the new option of having the larger 320GB 7,200rpm fitted.
I need at least 250GB to 300GB available hard drive space on my portable MacBook Pro, without the need to have to plug in any from of external unit (MacBook Pro only). I have installed some very large applications such as Apple Logic Studio, Apple Shake 4.1, Apple Final Cut Studio and some other's to name but a few, which have left little to no realistic working space, nor any realistic space for many additional user files which I later would like to store and be readily available on the MacBook Pro and not some inconvenient external drive which I would only use for time machine and archiving. The extra 120GB available on the newer 320GB 7,200rpm that was introduced and made available weeks after I obtained my unit, would certainly give a much needed working/storage capacity and with the much needed rotational speed of 7,200rpm as currently with mine being necessary for music studio use and HD video editing.
Hard drive aside, I understand and am led to believe that the current MacBook Pro 17" currently and basically is the same unit as with my MacBook Pro 17" and Apple themselves pointed me in the direction of legitimate authorized Apple service and repair centers for arranging a hard drive upgrade. Using an authorized service/repair centre is necessary in order to keep the (extended 3 year) warranty intact. Trouble is on contacting the authorized service centre, they then allegedly checked this with Apple themselves before getting back to me and saying that it would not be possible due to the possibility of overheating from the newer drive, yet my MacBook Pro 17" runs quite cool with it's current 7,200rpm 200GB drive.
Is my MacBook Pro 17" doomed and I therefore can't upgrade to the larger 320GB drive at the same 7,200rpm spindle speed? Is my only choice to get-rid of the MacBook Pro I currently have? To be able to upgrade to the now fitted 320GB 7,200rpm drive in the current MacBook Pro's 17" would help me 'no end' and save me from having to ever consider selling all that I've invested with Apply recently, that would be a shame.

Thanks for both your suggestions.. I see that http://www.barefeats.com/ has some very useful info which I found on this page http://www.barefeats.com/mbpp08.html
Here they show both the WD Scorpio Black 7K 320G (320GB 7,200rpm) and the Hitachi 7K320 HDD (320GB 7,200rpm) drives to be both quite suitable, with the latter being the one installed on current MacBook Pro 17' notebooks as an option.. however I am now becoming excited at the option of possibly being able to upgrade to the new Seagate Momentus 7200.4 which will feature 500GB of storage, 7200rpm and 9.5mm thickness, this really would help me very much for my intended use and all self contained within my MacBook Pro 17".
However I am really left feeling a bit still unsure and weary as to the full and total compatibility for upgrading to one of these with my current MacBook Pro because of what the authorized Apple service/repair centre had told me. They seemed quit adamant at the time having took my MacBook Pro's serial number and then checking that with Apple technical as to it's compatibility to upgrade from it's current factory fitted 200GB 7,200rpm drive to the 320GB 7,200rpm HDD now on offer as an option to the current MacBook Pro 17" models.
Therefore just to re-confirm, I have a MacBook Pro 17" Intel Duo 2.6GHz 4GB RAM 1920x1200 display 200GB 7,200rpm drive, which I purchased around August/September 2008 only weeks before the 320GB 7,200rpm drive became an option on newly ordered MacBook Pro's (I missed this option by weeks). For absolute verification, my MacBook Pro 17" system information is as follows:-
    Hardware Overview:
    Model Name: MacBook Pro
    Model Identifier: MacBookPro4,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor Speed: 2.6 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1
    Total Number Of Cores: 2
    L2 Cache: 6 MB
    Memory: 4 GB
    Bus Speed: 800 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: MBP41.00C1.B03
    SMC Version: 1.28f1
As you can see my Model Identifier is: MacBookPro4,1
With these details, could it be verified that this/my MacBook Pro 17" would be fully compatible with any of these three aforementioned drives? i.e. the following three models (especially the 500GB seagate):-
    The WD Scorpio Black 7K 320G (320GB 7,200rpm)
    and/or
    The Hitachi 7K320 HDD (320GB 7,200rpm)
    and/or especially
The new Seagate Momentus 7200.4 with 500GB of storage, 7200rpm and 9.5mm thickness
or maybe any other very Large capacity and fast operational drive that may improve over the three drives mentioned above.
All help and confirmation is very appreciated, thanx..

  • Upgraded Hard Drive, now Combo drive wont recognize. HELP!!!!

I upgraded my hard drive, installed the os-X (10.3.9 i think) and the cd combo worked fine, removed the combo to do somthing for the laptop (installed it in the iBook), and now when I put another combo drive (same model different drive) into the mini, the mini doesn't even recognize that there is a drive at all,
it will take a disk, but wont eject or mount.
    what should I do?
should I put the original drive into the mini?
Also, i cant re-install OS-x because the optical drive wont mount in the mini, and the ibook says that It cannont use the software with the version that is installed on it (10.4.somthing)

There isn't a BIOS in G4 Mac systems - in essence, rather than having a pre-determined configuration, the system checks for existent components at startup such that if the drive in the system was recognised and had a viable driver, it would be functional.
First thing to do is check whether the system sees the drive at all. Go to the Apple menu and select 'About this Mac'. Then click the 'More info' button when the dialog box gives the MacOS version, processor and memory.
The click the 'ATA' tab on the left. You should see two entries - the first being the internal hard drive which will be shown in the lower portion of the right-hand pane by model and capacity. If the combo drive is not showing there with any entry (ie, there is only one ATA device, the internal HD) then more than likely the drive is not connected correctly as Boece has suggested. If it IS listed there and correct by model number, then it may be that the drive itself is faulty or the system's power management unit isn't controlling it correctly.
If the later is the case, a PMU reset may help. Try the following:
    - Unplug all cables from the computer, including the power cord.
    - Wait 10 seconds.
    - Plug in the power cord while simultaneously pressing and holding the power button on the back of the computer.
    - Let go of the power button.
    - Press the power button once more to start up your Mac mini.

  • Upgrade Hard Drives?

    Hi,
I have read quite a few posts and also talked to Apple Support - but I am still confused.
I have a MAC PRO purchased in October, 2007. It has a 500 GB hard drive in bay #1 for all my programs and a little data. I also have 3 hard drives in bays #2, #3 and #4. These three are 750GB each and are used only for data files. My operating system is MAC OS X version 10.4.11.
My question is, can I replace the 3 x 750GB drives used for data storage with either 1.5TB or 2.0 TB drives? (I understand that the WD 2.0TB drive is slower).
Or, is there some sort of max amount of internal storage allowed based on motherboard or something?
MAC Support said they could only say go to 3 x 1TB drives. But according to some posts, I think some people have tried larger drives OK.
Any help will be much appreciated.
    Thank you.

I too am looking to upgrade the hard drive in my Mac Pro. I currently have the original 250GB drive that came with my machine as my primary (for apps and user account stuff), a secondary 250GB drive (for my actual work), and a 500GB drive in bay 3 that I use as a Time Machine drive.
I was thinking about adding a 1TB drive as my primary and move the 250GB out as a work backup/catch all/scratch disk. I'm looking at the WD Black 1TB, but I'm concerned about reliability. Are 1TB drives a lot more reliable now than when they first came out? If reliability is more important to me, should I just stick with a smaller 500GB drive since I probably don't really need a terabyte for my primary?

  • Suggestions for Upgrading Hard Drive

I'm looking to upgrade my internal Hard Drive in my Macbook Pro. The current internal hard drive is the 250 GB hard drive that came with the computer. I want to upgrade to an internal hard drive of at least 320 GB or more. Does anyone have any suggestions as where to look for an upgrade? Or does anyone have any suggestions for a good, reliable internal hard drive that will work for me?
    Thanks!

The largest notebook drive currently available is 500 GBs. Drives may be purchased at:
    MacSales.com
    Buy.com
    NewEgg.com
And, many other online vendors. Any SATA notebook drive should work. If you don't have a Unibody MBP, then the drive height must not exceed 9.5 mm. Choose 5400 RPM drives for economy or 7200 RPM drives for higher speed and performance. Manufacturers include Samsung, Toshibs, Hitachi, Seagate, Western Digital, and Fujitsu. For performance comparisons and benchmarks visit Bare Feats, Storage Review, or Tom's Hardware Review.
