Upgrading Hardrive/ Re-installing Snow Leopard Macbook Air
I just bought a bigger hard drive for my macbook air. I already backed up with time machine. My plan was to install the new hard drive, install snow leopard, and then do a time machine restore. My problem is I own the snow leopard disk but the macbook air doesnt have a dvd drive. How do I re-install the OS without a DVD drive and does my plan make sense?

You need another computer with an optical drive, but it can even be Windows: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL112
After Snow Leopard is installed, it will present the option to migrate your account and settings from the TM backup.

Hi Donald,
No it doesn't erase anything by default, it does what we used to call an Archive and Install feature, which can give you a new OS, yet preserve your files and settings if you have enough room on your HD...

But it does it automatically unless you specifically erase the Disk, but will replace Tiger completely for the OS & several Apple Apps like Safari, Mail, etc, yet preserve your old settings for those!
If you think you may need Tiger to run any APPs that do not work in SL/10.6, then clone or backup first.
I would recomend 2 things before installing though...
Make sure you have enough RAM & HD space.
Snow Leopard/10.6.x Requirements...
General requirements
* Mac computer with an Intel processor
* 1GB of memory (I say 2GB at least)
* 5GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
If it's a core Duo & not a Core2Duo, then it'll only run in 32 bit mode.

1. Insert the new Mac OS X SL/10.6 Install Disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

Reinstalling Snow Leopard MacBook Air into Mavericks/Lion

I have a MacBook Air from 2011 with Snow Leopard on it. I want to wipe my hardrive clean and install either Lion or Mavericks on it. The problem with the 2011 model with Snow Leopard is that you cannot reboot and reinstall it without a USB key, right? So, if I install either Lion or Mavericks on the computer before I reinstall it, will that give me an option to reinstall without an USB key, or is it a permanent condition for the Macbook Air from 2011 to be without an Internet recovery mode?

While not exactly answering your specific questions, my advice: Partition your hard drive for a new 2nd partition of about 80% of the remaining capacity. Install Lion or Mavericks into the new partition.
That way you have a Snow Leopard partition to work with by "dual-booting" (Startup Disk in System Preferences). If you discover that some of your software will not work in Lion/Mavericks, you have the Snow Leopard option to work with them.
Reinstalling Snow Leopard after a complete wipe/install Lion or Mavericks will be very difficult and time consuming.

File sharing between MacBook OS X Snow Leopard, MacBook Air OS X Mountain Lion won't work?
I'm using two laptops - a MacBook with OS X Snow Leopard and a MacBook Air with OS X Mountain Lion. I have set File Sharing privileges on both machines. Neither is showing up as visible to the either through browsing network places or even by directly trying to connect to the computer name.local or the given IP address. We have a Belkin router but I've turned the Firewall off on it and that still didn't do the trick. Any ideas?

Need to upgrade mail after installing Snow Leopard
I've just upgraded to Snow Leopard, all ok, but when I try to load up mail I get the message that 'You can't use this version of the application Mail with this version of Mac OS X. You have Mail 3.6'
Any idea how I upgrade Mail to the correct version, can't see the application on the App Store.
S.I'm guessing you moved Mail outside your Applications folder. Check the Applications folder and try running it from there. That's likely where the new version is.

Before I install Snow Leopard...
Will my Photoshop (CS2), my Acrobat Standard 7.0 and my Microsoft Office v. X -- all need to be upgraded if I install Snow Leopard? Adobe told me "yes" for their software. I haven't even asked Microsoft. Seems like a huge expense to upgrade all of these. Will I need to upgrade all and is it really worth it? Thanks, all.
CS2 is optimized for PPC and would use Rosetta and more memory plus that is 3 versions behind.
If you are happy with your software and it can do what you need, because otherwise I would plan on all those upgrades, which may push your hardware and end up feeling like you need a new system in a year or less.
On the other hand, upgrades are almost inevitable unless you needs stay the same. -
Install Snow Leopard on MacBook Air
Does anyone know if there are any complications upgrading to Snow Leopard on a MacBook Air via the remote disk facility?
I am installing Snow Leopard on a colleague's MacBook Air via the DVD/CD sharing and the update seems to be taking forever. When I started, the duration of the install was estimated at 41 minutes....well, 3 hours later I am looking at 39 minutes remaining...
Has anyone seen this happen and if so - what did you do? How long did it take to install?
One detail - when I first started the installation, the installer said that the MacBook Air disk/volume needed to be repaired and that SL installation was going to do that. Perhaps that added to the length of the installation? -

Buy a Snow Leopard installer DVD at an Apple store or reseller and follow the instructions that will come with it.

Re-installing Snow Leopard onto an upgraded Lion Macbook Pro
I have made the decision to re-install Snow Leopard after upgrading Snow Leopard on my Macbook Pro to Lion the day it came out. I've just had too many issues with Lion since I upgraded and can't seem to get them fixed! Apps not working (i.e. Microsoft Oultook 2011 failing, Time Machine not working as per Snow Leopard, Circular timer on for up to 20 minutes before I can use the machine,etc)
Therefore I wondered if someone could give me the best way to re-install please? How do I format the hard drive completely and re-install? Also I have a Snow Leopard upgrade DVD and wanted to double check I could re-install the full OS with this? I think from looking at other forum entries that this disc does have the full install, but obviously don't want to blow everything away only to find that this DVD doesn't work!

I have a first generation MacBook Air that has been refurbished via the Apple store. I installed Snow Leopard about a year ago and now, my computer wont update! It will download the updates restart my computer, but then I get an error message and the computer wont restart!
What is a error message and what do you see when it appears?
Haven't much problem with Airs around here, since they have a SSD they tend to be more reliable.
Perhaps it was a bad update, have you ran through this list of possible fixes?
Do as many as possible, starting with #1. Until the problem is resolved.
Use the boot 10.6 USB instead of the disk of course.

I was wondering if it is possible to install Snow Leopard on my July 2011 MacBook Air that came with Snow Leopard (I know that Apple does not recommend installing earlier versions of OS X on your Mac but I simply have too until some of the bugs are ironed out of Xcode for Lion). I do not have any physical installation media - only the developer disk image that contains to OS and I was wondering if I was to simply partition a hard drive and 'mount' onto the partition and installing it via 'Option' at startup would work at all.

The July 2011 MBAs came with Lion not Snow Leopard.
Unless you bought a "closeout" earlier MBA in July 2011 which would of come with Snow Leopard.
Which is it?
If it's the new 2011 MBA, then Snow Leopard will not install on the MBA. For one it doesn't have all the right drivers. Apple doesn't support it, and I believe it will not actually install correctly.

Negative reviews are common place here as it is a trouble shooting forum. If you want to read the advantages, improvements and new features then go to the Apple site. If you are running Word 2004, Early Adobe suite, etc which are PPC programs, then don't update. Go to Apple logo in upper left menu bar, open About this mac > More Info > Software >Applications and sort by 'Kind' and look what PPC programs you have installed. If you are not prepared to upgrade these programs, then do not update to Lion.
There are plenty of threads to read up on about this here. But remember that 99.9% of comments will be negative, even though the forums represent only a tiny fraction of the Millions of Lion Downloads purchased and installed with no issues at all. So basically it's your call.

I'm quite interested in buying a 2013 MacBook Air.
as far as I'm aware, that Mac model will have OS X Mavericks unstalled, but, due to work related circunstances, I would like to create a partition, and to install Mac OS X Snow Leopard on that partition. Basically, i would liek to make a dual boot: Snow Leopard / Mavericks.
Question: Is it possible to install Snow Leopard on a 2013 MacBook Air?!
(And yes, I'm aware that Snow Leopard doesn't bring most of Mavericks functions!)
