Upgrading HD on G4 iBook

I have a G4 iBook, 1.42 GHz, the last one before the MacBook shipped. Will this Seagate HD...
http://tinyurl.com/2mmk46
fit and install easily? Uh, which leads to my second question: What's a good guide for replacing the HD?
I'll be getting an external enclosure, too. I intend to clone the 60 GB I have to the 120 in the enclosure, then swap 'em. Sound right?

Thank you. I'd been to ifixit.com, but hadn't found
that page. Perfect. Yes, I intend to get a FW case so
I can connect it to the eMac I'm using for added
storage, backups, and a print server. It's an older
model with USB 1.1 only.
Is there anything I should look for in the case, or
anything I should avoid?
Hi
I recently tried to upgrade my iBook G4 with an 80GB Samsung 5400RPM out of a Lacie external drive, firstly by copying the existing drive using the restore facility in Disk Utility, then later using a fresh OSX install from DVD. It worked, but was really slow to boot up and run programs. I don't know if I had a bad drive, but Hardware Test said it was OK. I'm sceptical that the motherboard can handle larger capacity drives.
Can you advise if your upgrade has been successful, if so I may use the same HDD as you. Does anyone else out there have information on my case, ie slow response after HDD upgrade.
Thanks.

What software should I upgrade to on an iBook G4 running OS 10.4.1 that is still capable with the computers hardware capabilities?

The reason I ask is that I have just gotten an iPhone 4S and with the 10.4.1 software I'm running now, it doesn't allow my iTunes to update to the newer version.  Therefore, being stuck with an older version of iTunes, it refuses to recognize the new iPhone and will only charge it rather then be able to add music to it.

  • Advice on upgrading 3 yr old iBook?

I now know I've waited too long to upgrade, (since I can no longer check my Yahoo mail or view certain websites) to upgrade my OS. My iBook is appx. 3 yrs old (Power PC G3-128MB w/OS 10.1.5). I keep getting message to drop Internet Explorer and use Safari. It appears Safari does not work w/my current OS? What is the feasability (logistically and monitarily) of upgrading?
Do I just need to get software, or should I/have to shop for newer hardware too?
ps: I'm already planning to replace my Windows based desktop PC, (very soon I hope) with a new Mac. I was hoping I could still use this laptop a little longer.

Hi macludwig! And Welcome To Discussions!
Here is some additional info, and some repeats of what has already been posted.
Mac OS X Versions 10.1, 10.2, 10.3, and 10.4, are complete system upgrades that must be purchased.
The point upgrades, such as 10.1.x to 10.1.5 (Final) 10.2.x to 10.2.8 (Final), 10.3.x to 10.3.9 (Final), and 10.4.x to 10.4.7 (Pending), can be downloaded for free.
Tiger is available for purchase at The Apple Store (U.S.).
Jaguar and Panther, are no longer available directly from the Apple Online Store, as Tiger 10.4.x is the most up to date OS.
Jaguar Full Retail Version CDs, a Full Retail Version, of the Panther Install CDs, or a Full Retail Version of the Tiger Install DVD, can be purchased rather inexpensively, at some online Apple retailers, Amazon, eBay, AppleRescue, etc.
Be sure not to purchase grey, upgrade or machine specific CDs or DVDs.
Jaguar and Panther are only on CDs, not DVDs.
More info here Tip: Using OS X Install CDs/DVDs On Multiple Macs
Once Jaguar 10.2.x is installed, you can use the 10.2.8 combo update,
or if Panther 10.3.x is installed, you can use the 10.3.9 Combo Update, to upgrade to the final edition of either OS.
If your Mac meets the System Requirements for Tiger, you could also consider installing that.
And then use the 10.4.7 Combo Update.
    Jaguar System Requirements
-Power Mac G3 or G4, iMac, eMac, PowerBook G3 or G4, or iBook computer
    -128MB of physical RAM
-Supports all video cards shipped by Apple on Mac OS X-compatible systems. Quartz Extreme functionality is supported by the following video cards: NVIDIA GeForce2 MX, GeForce3, GeForce4 MX, or GeForce4 Ti; Any AGP-based ATI RADEON card. A minimum of 16MB VRAM is required.
-QuickTime Pro functionality requires a QuickTime 6 Pro key. The QuickTime 5 Pro key will not work after this software is installed.
-DVD Player requires a DVD-ROM equipped Macintosh with built-in FireWire.
    Panther System Requirements
    Tiger System Requirements
    Additionally,
"Tiger ships on a DVD, but if your Mac doesn’t have a built-in DVD-ROM player, you’ll need CD media. When you buy Mac OS X Tiger, you qualify to purchase Tiger CDs for only $9.95."

  • Upgrade OS on my iBook G4

I want to upgrade the OS on my iBook G4 - I currently have OS X version 10.3.9 - I am currently not able to run the latest flash player and have other limited functionality. I know that Snow Leopard is not compatible with my hardware. What is the latest OS I can get?
    Thanks!

What is the latest OS I can get?
Mac OS X 10.5, but if your CPU is slower than 867MHz, it can't be installed in the normal way.

  • Upgrade from Tiger (g4 ibook) to leopard/ snow leopard? Please help!

I know a fairly knowledgeable when it comes to the lovely apple mac, but i am getting a little lost in a load of jargon on forums about whether you can update the software on a G4 ibook from Tiger (10.4.11) to something more recent (leopard/snow) which supports iLife '09.
The ibook G4 is an old laptop and I also have a Macbook which I leave at the office which runs off leopard. Can I t-boot and upgrade my software on my old G4?
If so, step by step dummy instructions would be soooo fantastic, if anyone would be kind enough to break it down for me
    hope someone can help

So when you say "verify" what are you referring to?
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
There's also a Verify button there, but may as well Repair, which verifies also.
Do you have a referral for obtaining new disc at reasonable price for this procedure or what I should expect to pay? Or just hunt?
If apple still has it, $129, if hunting, make sure it's not a Gray machine specific Disc, which are all Intel only also.
If Apple, you have to call Apple & likely ask for a Product Specialist to get it, if they still have it!

  • Upgrade OS Panther on iBook G4  to unavailable OS Tiger

I am repurposing and old iBook G4 to be the music server/centre in my house (1.2 GHz, 14-in, early 2004). Upgrading the iBook seemed to be a less expensive option than say, buying a MacMini which has no screen or keyboard/mouse. The iBook is in pretty good shape considering it was a student’s workhorse until recently. However, it is running on OS Panther and has only a 60 GB Hard drive. So:
    1. Where can I get a copy of OS Tiger (superceded by Leopard and no longer available) that can be installed on an iBook G4? I have the Tiger software that came with my Intel MacBookPro and an Intel iMac (since replaced with OS Leopard) but it will not fly on the iBook.
    2. Can I buy a bigger hard drive for the iBook? 100 or more GB? And if so, any particular HD?
Technically the iBook works perfectly well as is, but I would like to use some of the features of Tiger and could us more hard drive space. Also, I would like to be able control iTunes from my iPhone Remote.

    Welcome To  Discussions osymandias!
If your Mac meets the Leopard System Requirements, the Full Retail Version, of the Leopard Install DVD, can be purchased at The Apple Store (CA).
The posted RAM System Requirement, is the bare minimum.
For optimum performance, more is recommended.
If you know what to look for, a Full Retail Version, of the Leopard Install DVD, can be purchased, sometimes less expensively, at some online Apple retailers, Amazon, eBay, FastMac, HardCore Mac, AllMac, etc.
Be sure not to purchase grey, upgrade or machine specific CDs or DVDs.
    Leopard is on DVD.
The disc should look exactly like the images in the above links, and not say Upgrade, CPU Drop-in DVD, or "This software is part of a hardware bundle purchase - not to be sold seperately." on it.
    Caveat Emptor!
If any are presently available, examine these items very carefully, and if in doubt, ask questions of the seller before purchase!
    Leopard On eBay
Once Leopard 10.5.x is installed, you can use the If Leopard 10.5.x is installed, use the Mac OS X 10.5.5 Combo Update, to upgrade to the current version.

  • Upgrading hard drive to ibook G3 500 Mhz 12"

Hello, I am getting ready to upgrade the hard drive to my powerbook g4 1.5Mhz 12" aluminum. My husband has a ibook G3 500Mhz that currently has a 8MB hard drive (I know, it is ridiculously small). Anyways, can I take my old powerbook g4 hard drive and upgrade his ibook with it? I saw an older post that said this was cool with a 600 MHz ibook G3, but am not sure if this is different for our machine. Also, any recommendations for upgrading the RAM to his ibook? Thanks!

It should work, but it's ridiculously hard:
    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Repair/iBook-G3-12-Inch-Hard-Drive/130/1
How much RAM is installed? There is only one user-accessible RAM slot in the iBook, and the maximum RAM that is made for that slot is a 512 MB RAM module. It takes a 3.3 V, PC100 or PC133 compliant, 1.25 inch SDRAM SO-DIMM (144-pin).
    http://www.ramseeker.com/memory/iBook/
Instructions for replacing the RAM can be found in this Apple Knowledge Base article:

  • Upgrading Hard Drive on iBook

    Hi,
I was wondering if anyone has had there hard drive upgraded by the Apple Store. My friend got a 1.2 ghz iBook about 1 year ago, and needs a bigger hard drive. I could do ti for him, but would feel more comfortable having the Apple store do it. If anyone has done this before, please reply. My other quetion is how much this would cost, and if Apple would also re-install OS X onto the new drive. Thanks in advance. MRCUR

    Hi MRCUR,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
I don't usually suggest upgrading your hard drive for a couple of reasons. One being that it puts it elevates the risk of future problems with the iBook. If you (or your friend) would like to no more reasons why I don't suggest upgrading as well another option, let me know.
If your friend really would like to upgrade your hard drive, you may want to look into PowerBookResQ. They do both upgrades as well as troubleshooting. Look into it, their services come with a 90 day warranty as well as extended warranty options.

  • Upgrading to Macbook from Ibook - software conflict?

    Hi,
I'd like to mirror my current system and sofware across to the a new-to-me Macbook.
How can I do it - if indeed it's possible? Ideally, I'd like to burn a disc image of my entire machine and copy that across somehow.
    thanks

To build a little on what Michael just said. You simply can't do it. While the OS for your iBook looks pretty much the same as it does on the new MacBooks (or any new Intel based machine), it is very different under the hood. The version of OS X that you have on your iBook "speaks" PowerPC. It wouldn't have the slightest idea what to do with an Intel processor. You can move your personal documents and applications over, but you can't simply move over an entire image.

  • After upgrade to iOS 8.3 screen reader in iBooks crashes

It happened on my iPhone 4S and iPad Air today After an upgrade.
When in iBooks, screen reader reads the page on the screen, finishes reading the text, turns the page but gives up (crashes?) immediately after. the reader "toolbar" simply disappears.
Before the upgrade it would turn the page and continue reading. Not anymore.
google doesn't seem to know anything about this.
Can anyone else confirm the behaviour? I tried it on several PDFs - the same behaviour.

    at jpetr1
Your observation is right. I am facing the same issue after upgrading to iOS 8.3. The trial and error was common with Microsoft .. it seems Apple is catching up with MS .
I hope they address this issue quickly.

  • Interrupted upgrade on an iBook = kernel panic

I was trying to upgrade an old G3 iBook (10.2) to Tiger, and borrowed a firewire DVD drive from a friend. I won't bore you with why, but I had to interrupt the upgrade and start over. No matter what I do now, I get a kernel panic starting up. I've tried Disk Utility, both from an earlier install CD (I don't know how to start up from the firewire DVD drive) and from a G5 connected via firewire, starting the iBook while holding down "T" on the keyboard. Nothing helps.
I can read and save most of the data via the firewire connection to the G5, but my iPod is linked to this computer, I'm editing two mailing lists from it, and a lot of my data is embedded in programs on it. Is there anything I can do to recover this disk, say by removing recently written and updated system files and rebooting?

No, I can see the iBook drive from the G5 via "target disk mode". I just can't get it to boot by itself. Are you saying I can connect the unbootable iBook to the G5 by target disk mode and also connect the DVD drive by firewire and upgrade the iBook that way, by connecting the upgrade DVD to the iBook through a G5 intermediary?

  • How do you fix 'unable to upgrade from version 0'?

I have been working on 6 ibooks over the past year, documenting a lot of stuff for user manuals for our school. The ibooks were all created in iBA version 1.0, but are not published - we only use them internally so we just use the previews.
I gave up trying to upgrade my 1.0 iBooks, it takes too long to 'optimize' the files when I try to open them in 2.0. I have read all the issues with iBA 2.0, but decided to download 2.0 on another computer and wabt to try to re-write all my old 1.0 manuals (I have all the files that went into them).
However, when I double-click to open the 2.0, nothing happens. So I go to 'File' and select 'New from Template Chooser'. I then get the window with all the new templates, including the portrait ones. When I select any template, say the 5th one for example, I get the prompt "The document 'Textbook 05.ibatemplate' could not be upgraded. Unable to upgrade from version 0". This happens for every template. I don't understand. I downloaded the 2.0 from the app store onto a 'clean' computer. Yes, it has Lion on it and all the spec requirements to run iBA. Can anyone help me with what to do next?

Did you ask Apple for help yet?

  • How do I keep all my documents in iBooks that were purchased from on line store not at the iTunes Store. (Ver 7 has screwed up iBooks and it no longer works)

I have hundreds of 3rd party purchased lists and legal documents I keep in Ibooks. Since upgrading to version
7 iBooks only opens for a few seconds then closes any open document and kicks me all the way out of iBooks
How do I keep these and reload ibooks ? I am 500 miles from my main PC and need thee forms now.

The iPad is not new. It is almost 2 yrs old. Many of the documents are legal documents, legal journals text books etc that have a 30 day limit on downloads and that time period has expired. Your post suggested closing all applications and forcing a power down. That I have done several times. I have not restored the software as that would require deleting the contents. Not all the files are backed up and the ones that are, reside on my personal laptop that is states away and will be for at least a week and I need the data now.

  • IOS 7 Or Mavericks? Now cannot add .ibooks files to library

This is wierd, after either my IOS 7 upgrade or mavericks upgrade I did an .ibooks epub using IBooks Author and exported the file to my desktop. Then Opened Itunes and clicked add to library, the book does not appear in the library.
ZTried this with a regualr EPub and that does not work either.
But if I go inside Ibooks Author and choose preview entire book I will see it in Ibooks.
    Any help here?

Am I missing something here? Where are all my books that are in my Itunes library? In ibooks in Maverick I can only see a recent ibooks file I created using Ibooks Author while in Mavericks. I cannot see anything in Ibooks on my desktop which was in my itunes library before.
How do I view the lone book I have in mavericks on my IPad? It does not add the book to the Library that shows on my Ipad.
